Diner Reviews
  • "We went to Zinc with two friends for a double date and it was a fantastic restaurant. Food was great and atmosphere perfect."

  • "This was our first time in New Haven - a brief visit to the Yale campus. A friend recommended Zinc for dinner, and it did not disappoint. It was restaurant week, so I went with one of the specials - the bratwurst was perhaps the best I have had anywhere. The appetizer and sides were all delicious as well. My co-worker's meal was excellent as well. They appeared to have a good wine list, but we stuck with some of their craft beer selections, which were also good. If you're looking for a local place with a good vibe and bit of an eclectic menu, give Zinc a try."

  • "We had lunch last week during restaurant week....boy was the place ever hopping!! In spite of being so busy we received great service and were greeted cheerfully by Donna and Elizabeth. We also had a great meal....the duck confit was the absolute best we have ever had....our compliments to Denise and her staff!! We'll be back again soon...."

  • "The food was good, no complaints there. Really nice cocktails. And the decor is quite nice, definitely well-suited for the romantic dinner or festive night out. My only peeve is that while I know Saturday night is busy, I definitely felt that once we were done, there was no lingering. I don't blame the service at all, but I would say that if you like to hang around after eating a full meal, digest a little, you might not feel super comfortable doing so there."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner at Zinc. Unhurried, casual service, interesting and tasty food. A bit pricey, but would return if in New Haven."

  • "The food is always superb here - very innovative and amazing tastes! Even the bread and topping were something special! We were there for a New Haven Restaurant Week lunch - what a bargain for $18! Did not have the feeling that they skimped at all on the three course meal."

  • "I went during restaurant week and could not be happier with my experience. The service was quick despite the full house, and the complementary appetizer (fennel flatbread with a SE Asian-tasting chutney) was innovative and delicious. The lunch deal was a steal. I've been several times before and each time, I leave a happy customer."

  • "Went here for restaurant week zinc had a good selection of plates to choose from, but the serving size was very small, not worth the 32 dollars, in my opinion. The chocolate mousse cake was very very delicious, though; too good to share. The ambience was nice, and the servers were very prompt with refilling our water glasses. They did forget to give us utensils, though."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed Zinc on Friday night of restaurant week. Both had the suggested cocktail. We don't usually have cocktails but this one was amazinging-great smoky flavor. We both had the grilled shrimp appetizer -wonderful taste with red beets. Y wife had the brisket, I had the bratwurst. Both were prepared perfectly and quite delicious. We both had the apple cherry cobbler -again fantastic. Michael was a wonderful waiter -knew all the drinks and food well, answered our questions, and made good recommendations. We'll definitely be back!"

  • "Great date night place. Server was very friendly and attentive. Food portions were good for restaurant week."

  • "The Restaurant Week menu was outstanding - just as fine as the regular menu. We enjoyed a shrimp and beet appetizer, a lovely salmon main course and a good salty caramel desert."

  • "Food was imaginative and delicious. Service was spotty and the hostess was less than welcoming. The servers were professional and helpful as we chose items for lunch. We had a wonderful meal but because of the service, may find another to meet."

  • "Hostess was super friendly. Waiter was great as was the food. The only complaints are the wine was $12 a glass and it wasn't special and the portions were TINY. I think this was because we were there during Restaurant Week. You already are limited to only three choices but we didn't know the portion size was different. The people next to us had healthy portions compared to ours. They get you with the drink prices, that's for sure. It really wasn't a bargain."

  • "Zinc boasts an excellent pastry chef who is a wizard with chocolate. The barman mixes a fine martini. Main courses are somewhat conservative: well made, with good ingredients, but inclined towards bland despite exciting descriptions. Not likely to give offense, but our selections at least did not particularly impress. Nevertheless, it seemed like a reliable restaurant and we would return in order to try more of the desserts."

  • "I just didn't care for the table we were seated at. But the food perfect and the atmosphere great. Really friendly staff and fast service. We were out if there writhing an hour even though the place seemed pretty full. Will def be going back."

  • "We love the creative menus at Zinc. They always make us happy. The creative cocktails however, usually are trying a bit too hard. When I describe what kind of drink I'd like, rather than choosing from the menu, I get a smashing result, like creative champagne cocktails with ginger or biters. I've learned over the years, that I don't appreciate the special cocktails from the menu. The ambience is always loud, but I'm afraid my energetic table of 4 this last time contributed to that. I recommend Zinc and love going there for a fun and delicious experience with another couple."

  • "We met friends for dinner and each dish, starting with the appetizers, was delicious. The lettuce wrapped beef appetizer, a favorite of ours, was particularly delicious."

  • "Zinc has been my Go-To restaurant for years. The food is always unique and the preparation is creative as well as delicious. We loved our martinis but would prefer a traditional martini glass (with stem) to the short version they now use. It seems that the drink is much smaller. Our waiter was fabulous. Very accommodating without being pesty."

  • "We visited Zinc this weekend and had a great time. Both the food and service were great, as usual. This is one of our favorite restaurants and we look forward to returning!"

  • "I made a reservation for our 1 year anniversary for me and my girlfriend and made a request for a more intimate table setting. They not only made sure we had a good close seating but the hostess and waiter said happy anniversary and provided us with complimentary truffles! The service was outstanding and we were well cared for. The entire staff makes you feel at home and welcome. If you want to go to a place that knows what they're doing and you can rely on to make a special occasion even better, come to Zinc."

  • "I decided to take my parents from out of town to Zinc. We had a delicious meal from the cheese plates, to our main courses (gnocchi, salmon, steak), to the chocolate mousse we shared for dessert. The portions were a good size, but not too large and everything was rich in flavor. We tried two of their cocktails which were strange concoctions that we didn't entirely love, but they were still potable. If you have the money to spend on a nice dinner or you are a foodie, Zinc is definitely one of the best spots in New Haven."

  • "Zinc is a terrific restaurant. The food is among the best in the city. Sometimes I think they try too hard to come up with food combinations or drink ideas that are unique to the point of having to ask about many things on the menu. I think it comes across as pretentious, but others I have dined with view it as intriguing. In any event, I have never had a bad meal at Zinc at would highly recommend it."

  • "On a Saturday night, it was noisy -- long and narrow, tables close together, so noise was inevitable. On a quieter night, I would rate the ambiance as very good, I suspect. But the food made us forget the chatter. The complementary flatbread was the best of its kind we've had; the dumpling appetizer (filled with ginger and pork, in a wonderful broth) was excellent and plentiful; the duck (excellent -- cooked perfectly and with a great sauce) and scallops (very good) entrees were of the same quality as the app; and the apple-brioche crisp with salted caramel ice cream was wonderful. Will try to find an excuse to drive the nearly two hours from the Boston area to go to Zinc again soon."

  • "Dined at Zinc on Saturday evening and had an enjoyable evening. The restaurant was buzzing with activity and spirits were high. The food was good - but nor memorable. Service was very good but our wait staff had many tables. Would think twice before recommending as a fine dining experience"

  • "Had a great night for my anniversary with my girlfriend. Service was amazing, very friendly and knowledgable. Good food, very elegant plates, complex flavors, overall an amazing experience. I would recommend for a romantic night out, great for 21st birthdays. Great atmosphere for a girls night too."

  • "This was the first time my wife and I dined at Zinc and the occasion was for her birthday. We could not have been more pleased with every aspect of the dining experience. The food was outstanding and the service by all staff was superb. We will return again."

  • "Zinc has great food and is in a perfect location if you're in New Haven to go to the Shubert theater. The menu has an Asian influence so there are some interesting choices. We started with duck nachos and fried brussel sprouts -delicious! Well worth a visit."

  • "New Haven has some very good restaurants, but Zinc is a cut above. While their oeuvre may not be what most would consider adventurous, they are creative within it, without getting silly, and maintain a quality and consistency that is rare."
    Dined on 3/1/2014
  • "Would definitely recommend this place for any foodie I know, but just be aware that it is a bustling restaurant with music played rather loud in the background for "fine dining". The food and service were both very good, but we were left with the impression that they didn't want us to linger too long after we were done eating the final item served."

  • "We were celebrating my sisters engagement and they were nothing short of amazing. All of the food was impeccable."

  • "Among the upscale/pricy restaurants in town, this is really good. It's comparable in price to nearby Union League, but the food is better. Highly recommend."

  • "I was under the impression Zinc was a good representation of fine dining in New Haven. Our party was fairly disappointed. The starters were solid, nothing particularly inventive but flavorful and did leave us excited for the rest of the meal. The entrees (Scallops & Duck) were very disappointing. Unexciting, under seasoned and fairly boring mains. The scallops had to be sent back because each one crunched with sand. The waitress and manger were both very apologetic and sent a small plate of vegetable paella and neither charged for the paella or scallops. Their conduct was the bright spot of Zinc. Desert was also just fair though the espresso was extremely disappointing, watery and weak. Would not recommend to a friend or stranger."
