A word from ZINC- Philadelphia
This second restaurant of Olivier Desaintmartin, ZINC is no less than a replica of a “le Marais” style bar restaurant, artists most preferred section of Paris. Le Marais is also the oldest part of the French capital.

Desaintmartin bought a 1919 zinc bar from a Parisian bar, refinished it, and shipped it to this quaint 40 seats bar/restaurant.

Acclaimed for its food, romance and its specialty drinks, Zinc becomes a hang out for locals, a meeting place. You can share a charcuterie or a fromage plate with a glass of Chinon, or sit at the bar sipping a French aperitif waiting for your party, or enjoy some oysters with a Muscadet.

The bistro menu is the same for brunch and dinner so at any time of the day you may choose to order eggs Benedict or steak frites or even just an apple tart with a “coupe “ of Blanquette de Limoux (sparkling wine).

Diner Reviews
  • "Beautiful little place, lovely and cosy which added to the French cafe style atmosphere. Food was delish - really superb. Service a tad slow and disorganised when we arrived around 7.30 pm. Took us about 30 mins to get menus and water - let alone get a drink. Once a few tables left, things really improved and service became as you would expect and very attentive."

  • "A lovely bit of France in center city. Classic aperitifs, interesting menu, and friendly service. A small neighborhood bistro serving fresh well prepared food."

  • "This restaurant makes you feel like you are in Paris. Quaint, romantic, charming. Food was superb. Waitress was very attentive. Ambience fantastic. I always go to this restaurant before theatre."

  • "This was the 4th or 5th time I have been there. The food, while OK, was not of the quality that I experienced before. For example, the greens in the salad were not fresh and were. Gritty. The sauce on the scallops was congealed purple something and the mushrooms were overcooked. Service was good. "

  • "Cozy and quiet, an authentic bistro . I live nearby and enjoy the "neighborhood" feel of this place. The food is consistently good and though the wine list is short, our waiter chose a wonderful Cotes du Rhone for our meal. It is nice to be able to hear your dinner guests as well!"

  • "Very nice, had a table of 5, and they included tip in bill, Seemed odd. Service was slow and adequate"

  • "Great to live nearby a smaller restaurant. Very busy Sat night, every table taken and the food and service were great. If you live in the neighborhood will see people you know. We did."

  • "Food was good but expensive. The food is tasty but a little bit heavy."

  • "Zinc reminds me of a wonder place very near the Eiffel Tower. Same great atmosphere and the same great food!,"

  • "The menu was ok-not outstanding selection and not as French as we anticipated. The food we ate was good but no need to go back."

  • "This was our 3 or 4 time at Zinc. Food was okay. Service was slow - not their fault, there were only two servers and a bus boy for the entire restaurant. Tables are very close - be prepared to enjoy the conversations around you. With all the choices in Philadelphia, we may not return. "

  • "Perfect little French Restaurant in the heart of Philadelphia. Glad we had reservations, because the place was packed. Small dining area, with a single restroom. But made you feel like you were in a French Bistro, thousands of miles way. Fairly tradtional French fair, we ordered the special of the day- Rack of Lamb, with the gratin potatos, and Vegetable of the day- asparagus. All Excellent. Wife ordered med-rare, mine medium. both cooked properly. For appetizer we ordered the mushroom puff pastry- it was the highlight of the night, fantastic flavor. Overall great experience, and would easily return!"

  • "I was a little disappointed by our dinner here, as I was expecting a more authentic French bistro dining experience. The food, while tasty, was unremarkable. My octopus salad was very good (a special that night), but my sea scallops were ordinary, and my partner's Lancaster chicken (the restaurant's version of "coq au vin" was overcooked. I think there is promise here, but it's currently unrealized."

  • "I want to like Zinc, in that I love bistro food, a good selection of wines by the glass, and the option for small portions of the entree. However, I'm always disappointed. The quality of the food isn't up to the level of the prices, and there are just so many better places to go for that price."

  • "All four of us enjoyed our dinners . The mushrooms were amazing and the scallops were perfect."

  • "This is a wonderful find we made when we started to go to Philadelphia for a Walnut St. Theater subscription. This was our first Friday dinner (usually mid-week) at about 6:00 PM. It is a tiny bistro - probably 15 -18 seats - but delicious food. My wife had the $30 prix fix dinner featuring skate - beautifully prepared. I had rack of lamb. And you can walk to either the Walnut or Kimmel Center. Look forward to trying their pressed duck special for 2 served only Tuesday - Thursday. "

  • "An outstanding little French Bistro. Zinc never disappoints. Great foo, great service, a nice wine list, everything you could ask for in an enjoyable dinner experience."

  • "Zinc is a very lovely little spot with excellent food and service! I had scallops and my husband had tuna. Both dishes were prepared to perfection."

  • "with attentive staff. Never had escargot prepared as at zinc. Diver scallops were done perfectly, country pate with nuts and the salmon special all were delicious. wait staff was at our elbow when ever needed, had command of menu and wine list and very personable. Small but quality wine list. reasonably priced for center city. Opera cake was perfect ending to dinner."

  • "It was like stepping into a bistro in Paris. The surroundings, food selections, wine, atmosphere and cooking were no different than we experience there. The space is 20 tables, and spacing slightly less tight than in Paris. Service is friendly (and in English) and this meant a relaxed evening, it was not crowded or loud (weekday evening). This made for the ideal romantic birthday dinner for my wife and me. We recommend the mushroom in puff pastry with sherry sauce appetizer and for entrees, the chicken with gratin, and the coquilles. Not so much the pig's feet appetizer. We did love the chocolate mousse cake dessert & enjoyed the Chablis premier cru as well. Not inexpensive, especially the wines, but we found it worth the price."

  • "I wound up eating at Zinc twice in a week and I enjoyed each visit. Their Cosmopolitan cocktail is one of the best in the city. I had the calves liver on one occasion and the duck special on another. Each was done to perfection. My companion had the St. Jacques and she raved about it. The chocolate desert was fantastic. We are looking forward to going again."

  • "There aren't many places where you can find skate wing on the menu. It's done perfectly here with brown butter and served on a bed of sweet and sour red cabbage and mashed potatoes. All the usual bistro fare is offered including a braised chicken forestiere, steak frites and cassoulet. They offer an aperitifs such as Rin Quin Quin which I've never seen on a menu outside of Provence. A lovely chrming and quiet bistro."

  • "Three of us had an excellent meal in this charming spot on a week night. Sadly only three other tables were occupied in this little gem - too bad - folks are missing out on cozy French spot with outstanding food - our drink service was a bit slow for so few people being in the restaurant, but food service much better - only hope it remains that way when and if they get a crowd. More people should definitely try this wonderful spot."

  • "Our party of four had a wonderful dinner at Zinc. The small restaurant is a charming French bistro. The food and sauces are beautifully prepared. Service was excellent. Our delightful server was able to recommend gluten-free options. The restaurant's wine list is very small, however."

  • "The food and service as usual was good. It is one of our favorite restaurants in the city and is very close to the Walnut Theatre."

  • "We had a lovely dinner here for 6- after the pre theatre rush. The service was great and the room reasonably quiet. We all loved our food from the mushroom appetizer to the crabmeat special appetizer topped with caviar. The steak frites was perfect, the tuna amazing, and the roasted cauliflower was a surprise. We tried the pots de creme and maquise au chocolat- both rich and sinful. The wine list is good and we all enjoyed this place. We will come back."

  • "We have been to Zinc a few times, and the food only gets better and better! Everything was perfect! We loved the fact that there was the ability to get a smaller dinner portion - the small steak was just the right size!"

  • "I was looking to have an authentic cassoulet and perhaps it was there but my order had been re-heated far too long in a VERY hot oven and the result was a completely dried out and burned around the edges presentation. As we were there early prior to the orchestra mine was the first cassoulet order of the evening. For once I would say that a microwave re-heat followed by a minute or two under the broiler to crisp the bread crumbs would have been preferable! But on the bright side, the pate first course was outstanding -- worth the trip! Another positive was the wines-by-the-glass that were generous, almost twice the volume of some restaurants."

  • "The space is small but comfortable and captures the feel of a Parisian bistro. Menu offers traditional French dishes. Cassolet was perfect dish for a cold winter evening and desserts are wonderful, especially the flourless chocolate cake."

  • "I felt like I was in France for the night ! We truly enjoyed our evening dining at zinc. We will definitely return. The mushroom ragout appetizer is delicious as we're the mussels and frites"

  • "Very good food in a neighborhood location. I have been coming here for years and the food and service have been remarkably consistently very good. The only criticism I have is that there was no crème caramel for dessert."

  • "We were a party of four at ZINC, and all were extremely satisfied with the friendly, helpful service and the excellent preparation of the food. The calves liver with cipollini was superb, as was the endive salad. We will go back to ZINC on future trips to Philadelphia. It was a perfect ending of our afternoon to visit the Barnes."

  • "incredible service, a wonderful selection of food and wines. Also, for my date, a great 2 german pilsners to choose from (a rarity in Philly)! I LOVE Zinc Bistro. It feels like a slice of france right in the heart of our neighborhood. How lucky we are."

  • "Zinc is a small restaurant which creates a cozy feeling while dining. The food is well prepared. Mussels were sweet and plentiful--and no grit. Homemade desserts are a plus. The menu is not extensive, but all items are delicious. Especially enjoyed the fried goat cheese appetizer."
    Dined on 3/6/2014
  • "A terrific first experience. The place was nearly empty, so the service was highly attentive. Well-made cocktails, fresh beer and tasty food in extraordinarily generous portions. The cheese plate was enormous and accompanied by excellent jellies in several unusual flavors; the skate was hot and crisp, and the chicken special a hearty rustic joy. The only disappointment was the dessert, a pear tart, which I assume was made off-premises -- cold, gummy, and heavy. But that one sour note will not alter our plans to return to Zinc, and soon."

  • "The food wasvery good, . We tasted several things, from the cassoulet to the escargot, the cslf liver and the stuffed pigs feet. All delicios. No room for dessert. And what was great, it was quiet and we could really vhat with our friemdd, we will definitely go back. I HATE noisy spots where i cant hear what is said at mytable."

  • "My husband loves calves liver and since it was on the menu he cheered. The food was very good. The escargots were served in a new way for me and were delicious. There is a prix fixe every night which is a good option although we did not have the set menu during our visit. We will definitely visit again."

  • "Our party of 4 enjoyed every minute at Zinc. Intimate. Not too crowded. Friendly and timely service. The martini s and manhattan s were perfect as was our bottle of wine. Excellent meals from the romaine salad with a fried egg (hadn't seen that before!) to steak to the pasta. Good coffee. Highly recommend it."
