A word from ZINC- Philadelphia
This second restaurant of Olivier Desaintmartin, ZINC is no less than a replica of a “le Marais” style bar restaurant, artists most preferred section of Paris. Le Marais is also the oldest part of the French capital.

Desaintmartin bought a 1919 zinc bar from a Parisian bar, refinished it, and shipped it to this quaint 40 seats bar/restaurant.

Acclaimed for its food, romance and its specialty drinks, Zinc becomes a hang out for locals, a meeting place. You can share a charcuterie or a fromage plate with a glass of Chinon, or sit at the bar sipping a French aperitif waiting for your party, or enjoy some oysters with a Muscadet.

The bistro menu is the same for brunch and dinner so at any time of the day you may choose to order eggs Benedict or steak frites or even just an apple tart with a “coupe “ of Blanquette de Limoux (sparkling wine).

  • "I wound up eating at Zinc twice in a week and I enjoyed each visit. Their Cosmopolitan cocktail is one of the best in the city. I had the calves liver on one occasion and the duck special on another. Each was done to perfection. My companion had the St. Jacques and she raved about it. The chocolate desert was fantastic. We are looking forward to going again."

  • "It was like stepping into a bistro in Paris. The surroundings, food selections, wine, atmosphere and cooking were no different than we experience there. The space is 20 tables, and spacing slightly less tight than in Paris. Service is friendly (and in English) and this meant a relaxed evening, it was not crowded or loud (weekday evening). This made for the ideal romantic birthday dinner for my wife and me. We recommend the mushroom in puff pastry with sherry sauce appetizer and for entrees, the chicken with gratin, and the coquilles. Not so much the pig's feet appetizer. We did love the chocolate mousse cake dessert & enjoyed the Chablis premier cru as well. Not inexpensive, especially the wines, but we found it worth the price."

Sadly only three other tables were occupied in this little gem - too bad - folks are missing out on cozy French spot with outstanding food - our drink service was a bit slow for so few people being in the restaurant, but food service much better - only hope it remains that way when and if they get a crowd. More people should definitely try this wonderful spot."

  • "There aren't many places where you can find skate wing on the menu. It's done perfectly here with brown butter and served on a bed of sweet and sour red cabbage and mashed potatoes. All the usual bistro fare is offered including a braised chicken forestiere, steak frites and cassoulet. They offer an aperitifs such as Rin Quin Quin which I've never seen on a menu outside of Provence. A lovely chrming and quiet bistro."

  • "We had a lovely dinner here for 6- after the pre theatre rush. The service was great and the room reasonably quiet. We all loved our food from the mushroom appetizer to the crabmeat special appetizer topped with caviar. The steak frites was perfect, the tuna amazing, and the roasted cauliflower was a surprise. We tried the pots de creme and maquise au chocolat- both rich and sinful. The wine list is good and we all enjoyed this place. We will come back."

  • "I was looking to have an authentic cassoulet and perhaps it was there but my order had been re-heated far too long in a VERY hot oven and the result was a completely dried out and burned around the edges presentation. As we were there early prior to the orchestra mine was the first cassoulet order of the evening. For once I would say that a microwave re-heat followed by a minute or two under the broiler to crisp the bread crumbs would have been preferable! But on the bright side, the pate first course was outstanding -- worth the trip! Another positive was the wines-by-the-glass that were generous, almost twice the volume of some restaurants."

We were a party of six who all had different entrees, which we quickly were exchanging samples because we all thought we chose the best meal..... Never felt rushed, nor slighted.. The only disappointment was the pressed duck is served only during the week and not on the weekends.."

  • "A terrific first experience. The place was nearly empty, so the service was highly attentive. Well-made cocktails, fresh beer and tasty food in extraordinarily generous portions. The cheese plate was enormous and accompanied by excellent jellies in several unusual flavors; the skate was hot and crisp, and the chicken special a hearty rustic joy. The only disappointment was the dessert, a pear tart, which I assume was made off-premises -- cold, gummy, and heavy. But that one sour note will not alter our plans to return to Zinc, and soon."

  • "The appetizers were outstanding. The Pâté du Chef was elegantly presented, plentiful, and delicious. I had the wild mushrooms râgout served in puff pastry with a sherry sauce, and could have been content with that for the main meal. The hanger steak with frites was a huge disappointment: overdone meat, and food merely room temp by the time iut reached the table. Others in our party enjoyed the cassoulet."

The waiter was a patient, outgoing, excellent! young fellow He suggested ways to change various dishes, checked w/the chef each time, and was certain we would be satisfied , & we were. Scallops were sensational! Sauce was different not certain I would order it again. Veggies were cooked when ordinarily they would be on the hard side."

  • "Knew of Olivier DeSaintmartin for a long time and wanted to try Zinc. It was restaurant week and we typically will try 2 or 3 restaurants during this time. the place was not crowded, but it took a while before our 2 glasses of wine and 1 martini were eventually picked up off the bar - I was tempted to get them myself. The mussels were ok - maybe a day beyond their prime. the salad and salmon terrine were good. Hangar steak had good flavor, tuna was good and the pork was good. Desserts were the highlight a pear tart, pot de crème, and chocolate cake were very good. I had high expectations for this place and they were not met."

  • "Expectations are always less for Restaurant week.. The tables so close together and there were only two casualties our night. One couple left before ordering and knocked a water glass on the ground. When we politely told our waitress that she gave us the wrong bill, she knocked a salad off a holding area & it crashed to the floor. The starter Duck pate was quite good as were desserts. The steak/frites were solid but there was no beef taste suggesting a very poor cut of meat. Mussels were fishy & salty. Salmon terraine decent. My tuna was rare as ordered with no seasoning to the tuna but nice accompanyments Would have preferred simple French like onioin soup, Escargot or duck. Very generous wine pour. I'd call it a solid meal..Prefer Parc."

All our dishes were very good, but the escargot cassolette in a hearty tomato sauce with some garlic, anchovies and bacon was wonderful. Our only quibble is cramped seating and small tables. Truly a touch of Paris in Philadelphia! We certainly will be back."

  • "Recently dined at Zinc during restaurant week (RW). Ordered from the RW menu. Entree and dessert was good; the rest OK. However we did take note of the diners who ordered from the regular menu. They had apparently been here before and were the wiser. We'd try Zinc again during a regular night out and order the bowl of mussels with deliciously fragrant broth or a few of the other dishes that came from the kitchen and made us envious of what our fellow diners were eating. One warning: this place is very small and tables are packed in tightly. One highlight: Like a true French bistro we weren't rushed through our dinner and encouraged to leave quickly. Very relaxing!"

  • "I wasn't expecting the place to be so small - my bad for not doing the research. It was pretty crowded, so the service was a little bit slow. It wasn't an issue, though. The chicken and duck liver mousse wasn't "as gross as we thought" it would be, but after a taste we didn't eat it. The roasted root vegetable and goat cheese salad was very well put together. The steak (steak frites) was a little bland. Desserts were wonderful. Well worth the trip. If you sit in the front, keep your coat with you. Its drafty."

  • "Zinc's really cool. 1st things 1st: the food is excellent! A smooth, tasty pâté for 2, then perfectly done mussels (broiled!) with a finely diced piperade that added nice extra spice. My roasted veg salad w/ chèvre was truly great. My wife's bouillabaisse was a work of art, with the seafood arranged so perfectly in the huge bowl that it looked like one large mutant sea creature. It was delicious & she loved it. My yellowfin tuna came perfectly rare on a bed of crimson couscous (from beet juice, I assume) - it was simply one of the best fish dishes I've ever eaten. The dessert tarts were also excellent, along with fine espresso. The staff are young attentive foodies, wines are well chosen & priced, & the room could be anywhere in France."
