Zest is located in upscale neighbourhood of Vancouver
West-side. Atmosphere is elegant and serene such as Japanese simplicity combined with sensuality and elements drawn straight from West Coast landscape. The menu items are mix of traditional Japanese and adventurous with European flare. Presentation is decidedly modern. Chef's Omakase Course (up to the chef menu - requires min 24 hour prior reservation) containing 7 to 8 courses of chef's special creations using seasonal local ingredients is a must have item here. Or you may choose number of small plates accompanying with your wine and sake from the award winning wine/sake list.

Diner Reviews
  • "From traditional dishes to modern fusion offerings, Zest provides an ultimate culinary experience for those who like to venture into new things. The wine pairing and sake suggestions is a big attraction for this restaurant. Wine Wednesday and Sake Sunday provide extra discounts to customers on those days."

  • "Zest's excellent food continues but its surge in popularity since it won Best Japanese in the Vancouver Magazine awards has caused the level of service to suffer a bit. The level of individual attention has dropped on weekends due to the increase in diners. The experience is not quite the same."

  • "We sat down to one or two flies buzzing around the window. Then saw foreign objects in my water glass. With that aside, the sushi was good and fresh. Tasty dishes. The service for us was quite slow and the young servers confidence was yet to hit speed. Service can be hit and miss but the food was quite good. and please deal with the fly issue."

  • "My friend and I enjoyed the dinner menu. The portions were reasonable and the courses were interesting - if a bit heavy on sashimi. Would definitely eat here again."

  • "After reading the vanmag reviews I was really excited going here. We went as a group of five and ordered a variety of food. The crispy salmon roll on their specials was a stand out the duck cappachio was also lovely. The rest was nice but no more exciting than restaurants around."

  • "Waitress struggled describing our dishes in English, very difficult to understand bc of strong accent. Food was very good, but a lacked that little extra to push it into real foodie territory"

  • "The four of us had a fantastic time starting with trying to chose from all the great menu items so we could still sample everything. The Gomae was the best I've ever had, as was the Calamari salad beautifully cooked and presented. The sushi was fresh and perfectly presented. The pork loin roll special was excellent and beautiful, and the beef tenderloin with apple salad was an interesting and very delicious entrée. Ginger creme brûlée was subtle but excellent and the ice cream dessert with sesame/green tea was something new and delicious. Being a birthday dinner two of the waitresses even sang Happy Birthday. All in all, a great find. Very highly recommend and will return."

  • "This is an excellent restaurant featuring interesting and flavourful dishes. There is a daily list of specials, accompanied by a substantial list of everyday offerings. All the usual dishes are there, but there is also a range of more interesting variations. There is also a good range of sakis, and the distinctions between the different types are explained well."

  • "The entire first experience at Zest was wonderful. Everything about the evening was perfect, from the decor, the service and most importantly the food. My friend and I will return many more times! "

  • "Small restaurant with a downtown feel. Very good service and food."

  • "As usual, the food and service at Zest were very good. I was, however, somewhat taken aback when we arrived for our reservation at 7.00 p.m,to be told that we must be out by 9.00 p.m. For a restaurant such as this - as expensive as this - this is not what I'd call good customer relations."

  • "As the title says: food is too much over priced!!! I can order similar quality dishes at other places. Also I was sooooo angry to find out that because i was a bit late. So they disallowed the 1000 points reward. I wanna say that I went to that restaurant mainly because of the promotion of extra points but it turns out that I didn't get the points nor satisfied with the food. "

  • "We returned to Zest for the first time in a few years after they won the recent Van Mag Award for Best Upscale Japanese in the city. Obviously, we shouldn't have waited so long to return! The menu has a wonderful daily fresh sheet that emphasizes what's available in season. Our fresh sheet was filled with tempting halibut, fiddlehead, white asparagus, and spot prawn dishes. We enjoyed a variety of small plates that redefine whatever thoughts you might have on traditional Japanese flavours. It's a wonderful fusion. We started with a fiddle head and white asparagus gomae, followed by crispy calamari salad, Nagasaki Hamachi Sashimi, Spot Prawn Ngiri Sushi, and a seared halibut filled with local, fresh ingredients. We can't wait to return. "

  • "Zest was wonderful. We had the tasting menu, a great way to sample are variety of both raw and cooked dishes. Seafood was awesome, but the best dish might have been the chicken with mushrooms and asparagus. Awesome, attentive service. Great experience. "

  • "White linen is used on the tables which is nice to see since the trend of fine dining seems to be in the days of the past and many other restaurants have taken linen off their tables throughout the city. The sake, plum wine and winelist offering are quite extensive, I love the plum wine that came in the short chubby bottle. Unlike my go to unfiltered plum wine I love this one had the same plum flavor not too sweet I can sip throughout my meal. The food offerings are also great not typical. You can see and taste the creativity of the chef using local ingredients with classic preparation and a bit of wow factor. Its nice to treat yourself once in a while with great sushi or to celebrate a special occasion."

  • "The food at Zest is excellent. Everything is fresh and comes in a decent presentation. Wine list is comprehensive and is very good for a Japanese restaurant. Overall service is very good. The only thing I don't understand is that the sever was a bit strange. I talked to her and asked her questions about the menu. She replied to my friend instead. It looks like she does not want to talk to a guy. Perhaps I am not that good looking! "

  • "It was so nice to dine at Zest the other night. The service, décor and food were beyond what I thought could be found in my neighbourhood. I will definitely be returning for another evening soon. "

  • "The view of the gas station is deceiving - this is one of the best restaurants that Vancouver has ever seen. Top-notch Japanese!"

  • "Zest is surely the best Japanese restaurant on the west side. It is in an improbable location on a small plaza near the corner of 16th/Macdonald. The decor is simple, the ambience pleasant and quiet. The menu is interesting and changes with the seasons. This is not just a sushi restaurant-- it has a full array of options, using fresh local ingredients where possible. The waiters explain everything patiently. All the food is beautiful to look at and delicious to eat. Zest is a real treat for all the senses!"

  • "My wife and I had been to Zest before however the others in our party had not. All 3 other guests (2 local and 1 out of towner) all raved about the food (quality, taste, presentation). We had great service as well. Sat at the bar right in front of the chefs (Awesome)!"

  • "This is our second time. First time was maybe 2 years ago. A friend recommended it again. Clean, quiet, white table cloth. Service was very good; not rushed. Dishes came one at a time. Not pricey but not great value for money. Tasty, fusion Japanese. Small selection of sakes."
    Dined on 4/5/2014
  • "Dined here twice, enjoyed both times. Good place. Perhaps best in the neighbourhood. Not world class but excellent. The tea and Sake list are good (the unfiltered sake is awesome). Go for the Zest dinner prix fix option, at 60$ its good value and lots of food, a good sampling of the kitchen."

  • "This is one of Vancouver's best Japanese restaurants, with an innovative menu selection (though still serving the best "traditional" items). Try some cold saki with your meal."

  • "Best sashimi ever but prepare for pay for the quality."
    Dined on 2/16/2014
  • "Dishes such as the duck carpaccio and four of a kind sashimi were impressive in terms of innovative fusion flavours and ingredients. Although the price point is high, it is comparable to other restaurants of the same calibre. I would recommend the restaurant's 'specials' and cooked rolls/dishes as they are what sets this restaurant apart in the flavours department. Cold rolls such as the zest roll was 'uneventful' compared to other dishes. Overall vibe is wonderful and service was mostly attentive though waned towards the end of the night. Highly recommended to at least try once during your time in Vancouver; approach with an open mind and palate."

  • "We tried the Valentine's Day set menu and were not disappointed. The trio of cold appetizers was absolutely delicious. Who knew that cold spinach salad could taste this good. The duck carpaccio was also delicious. The staff were very friendly and the food was served in a timely manner. This restaurant specializes in Japanese fusion food and makes you want to return to taste many of the other mouth watering dishes."

  • "It is a fushion Japanese restaurant. If you are interested in the new style, but not traditional Japanese restaurant, this is the one. It is a little pricey."

  • "I can't wait til my next visit. Quiet enough for a great conversation, service is friendly and polite, food is clean and modern and please do order Matcha tiramisu! I would have wanted to order 3 of it if I hadn't been so full. (It was a special occasion and the dessert was complimentary. I was so happy and feeling special!)"

  • "Excellent pan-Japanese restaurant. Very friendly service. Great value and easily the best sushi in town amongst their many other takes on Japanese fare. I've eaten quite a lot of Japanese, in Japan, at revered places, and can attest to this being truly excellent. Enjoy!"

  • "We had the set menu for $60 per person. Food came in at an appropriate time. Ordered extra abalone cooked with sake. Delicious! Service was impeccable. I would definitely go again!"

  • "Our evening at Zest with a friend could not have been better -- starting with free parking right outside the door and a lovely understated but warm ambiance, to an invigorating menu and exquisite food. All the "standard" Japanese fare is available, but with an extra flair, beautifully prepared and imaginatively presented. I loved my agedashi tofu presented in an olive tray, and my husband was very pleased with the "fluffy chili prawns", which he ordered because he was so intrigued with the description! Our friend ordered from the extensive sashimi and sushi options and was delighted with both. The small room provides wonderful spaces for quiet conversation, which we appreciated. Zest is truly a hidden gem and we will be back!"

  • "The kinpira appetizer was interesting, though not what I expected from the menu description, and the organic green salad okay if not memorable. My husband really enjoyed his beef tenderloin but my grilled spring salmon was rather dry and not nearly as good as the sable fish I had on a previous visit. Our shared panna cotta was nicely presented, and service was very good."

  • "Yes, prices are quite a bit more than the average neighbourhood fare but what a gem. Two dishes were outstanding!! Agedashi Tofu was amazing. We had the BC wild ling cod agedashi from the set menu and the broth was so delicious we decided to order the agedashi tofu off the regular menu...Presentation & taste were unbelievable. Another fab dish was the roasted duck carpaccio...WOW. The 'Tuna in Three Ways' was another big hit for my friend. I was rather disappointed in the rolls we had order but definitely be back just for the other items on their menu. If you are a Sake fan or just interested in trying different types of Sake, menu also offers a trio of three sake tastings. Comes in beautiful glasses and an explaination of each."

  • "A wonderful menu selection. We particularly enjoyed the tuna in 3 ways and duck breast carpaccio. For dessert, we fell in love with the black sesame ice cream. Service we perfect. We particularly enjoyed the timing of how each dish was presented - so we could savour each one as it arrived and didn't have to eat everything all at once. One other nice thing about the restaurant is the wheelchair parking space right in front, which is very convenient for wheelchairs because there is no curb to worry about."

  • "Very good quality Japanese food ... the way Japanese food should be served and enjoyed. Not your average Japanese restaurant that serve farmed salmon. Zest uses high quality ingredients and they serve organic dishes, ocean-wise and wild salmon. The decor and the ceramic dishes at Zest are unique and a cut above. Prices are reasonable for this quality and for the art of dining. Good neighbourhood gem and just appropriate for a special occasion, a romantic dinner or to impress that someone on a first date. First time to discover Zest ... will return to try more items on their menu. Service is exceptional and jazz music playing in the background. Very hip! Don't change a thing - you've got the formula for success which is needed in Vancouver!"

  • "One of the things I love about Zest is its consistency in food quality. Can always expect the food to be exquisitely made - makes the whole dining experience that much more refined. We each ordered the Dinner Course and it was just the right amount of food for one person."
