Diner Reviews
  • "I took my husband out for his birthday after several friends recommended this hidden gem. We were not disappointed. The goldeneye roll was a favorite, as were the crispy brussels sprouts, tempura rock shrimp and the dino kale salad. The food is small plates, modern pan-Asian (mostly Japanese, with a few touches of other East Asian cuisine). YUM, a definite favorite for an occasional splurge."

  • "very good food. especially slowly cooked porkbelly and shrimp tempura was great!!"

  • "I was looking for sushi - this place hit the spot! Definately get a reservation, we saw a small party turned away for lunch on a Thursday. Ordered 4/6 of the rolls, loved them all!"

  • "We had an amazing dinner. The food was great, service and congeniality of the staff was tops ... We had a very nice time at Zentan. We recommend it for dinner. They serve a conventional breakfast there too ... It is NOT recommended by us. We had the buffet. The eggs were so runny, that I think for the first time in my life, I left most of my meal on my plate as we left."

  • "My daughter and I had a great first experience at Zentan Restaurant. Our waitress was very nice and knowledgeable about the items on the menu, and was able make really good food recommendations. The food was delicious, down to the desserts, and they delivery of the food was paced out just right."

  • "Very mean personell, from valet to front desk and waiters. Ok food. If you are hoping for fine dining, Zantan is definitely not the place. If you like listening to radio-style music and self serve then go there! Not a fine dining croud at all. Not a fine dining place! Not recommended!"

  • "I went to Zentan with some friends, and we were seated in a side room off of the main dining room. Until near the end of our meal, everything was great. The food was very good (the rock shrimp tempura was our favorite), our waitress was very pleasant and accommodating, and the restaurant was relatively quiet. But then one of the neighboring tables ordered a dish where you cook the beef yourself at your table. Things went downhill after that, mostly because smoke from the dish filled the small room we were sitting in, and the manager didn't seem like he was going to do anything about it. Needless to say, I got out of there as soon as I could. A disappointing ending to an otherwise great dinner."

  • "The service was really good and the waitress was knowledgable of the menu and the speciality cocktail/wine/sake list"

  • "The food at Zentan was wonderful and would have been even more so had there been a bit more of it. Except for the lamb curry, the other portions were small to microscopic. The gyu beef on a stick was more like a dab of meat -- or a dot on top of an "i". The lamb was fabulous as was the escolar, although the latter suffered from a similar deficiency as the beef though not as bad. I'm guessing that since the restaurant is attached to a higher brand hotel (Kimpton) that the prices automatically are higher than a standalone. Nevertheless, the overpricing and under-portioniong are a deterrent. The service was very good and our waitress was personable, knowledgeable and attentive without being overbearing. Just the right touch."

  • "We had marvelous dinner, which one portion was recommended by our waitress, Kitty. Everything was great!!"

  • "Went with my office to celebrate a coworkers upcoming wedding. The $19 lunch deal is outstanding. There is plenty of choice, the portions are substantial, and the food is good. I was even impressed with the level of creativity that went into the mocktails."

  • "We had a great meal at Zentan - will be back when back to DC"

  • "We were in town for meetings and I was asked to find a restaurant for the first night. Zentan was the choice and they delivered. The staff was very helpful and the food was amazing. I have already recommended the restaurant to a few of my peers looking to have dinner parties during the week."

  • "What is it with DC and a complete lack of understanding about sushi? The basic concept is nigiri or fish atop sushi rice. I rarely see anyone order anything but these fake rolls lathered in cream cheese and other incompatible sauces and topped with cornucopia. The food quality here is very high but it doesn't matter because everyone one is focused on pumping out these ridiculous rolls. Price is another issue and prevents this from becoming a regular spot. Much was made in the Post review of the new chef's addition of Pho to the menu but it wasn't even listed. [Typical Post omission.] The robata offerings are top notch but good luck getting out of here for less than $140 for two with a bottle of wine. Is $140 now hipster chump change?"

  • "Had a fun evening with girlfriends and a delicious dinner here. Interesting combinations in the menu offerings. Good service, fun ambience. Great spot for dinner before enjoying the views from the rooftop hotspot."

  • "Took my bf there for a birthday dinner and we both enjoyed it! Def would recommend it if you want to try something a little different."

  • "We were disappointed in general: shabby atmosphere and clientele, waitress who was well-meaning but presumptive, kitchen ignored my serious allergy tho they were notified on my initial reservation and I told the waitress when we ordered our food. Service was slow. There was an interminable wait each time we ordered a bottle of wine. We were in the back where the waitresses never looked. Some of the food was very good with interesting flavors but sushi and rolls were mediocre quality. Supermarket sushi is better. We were told to share dishes but portions were so small there was not enough of any dish for 4 people to share properly. They should have told us to order more or made the dish for the size of our party."

  • "The food was ok. Small plates the are shareable. We specifically made dinner reservations so we would be done to see the fireworks & head to the rooftop bar. The waiter disappeared when we wanted to pay & leave & no one was able to find him. By the time he finally showed up we missed the fireworks. Very disappointing!"

  • "Zentan is a different experience and we needed some help in ordering. You order many small dishes rather than whole entries. The service was great and we enjoyed the selections we made. Lots of flavor and different foods. We brought along our two year old and they were also very accommodating for her. We did not try the sushi this time, but based on our experience I would say it would be good. The quality, preparation, and presentation were all very good. A good time was had by all."

  • "Can't pinpoint exactly why, but I was underwhelmed. We liked it, didn't love it. There are so many other restaurants to go to in DC when we visit several times a year that we probably won't go back."
    Dined on 6/28/2014
  • "Our waiter said that Zentan has the best sushi in DC - not only do they have the best sushi but they have some other great finds as well. This is a great spot for foodies - very interesting menu options and a great lunch deal with a starter, noodle bowl and entree options as well as really great mocktails... We will definitely be back."

  • "We wanted to find a place to have dinner on a rooftop, being tourists, and heard that this was the place. The food was great, but we were a bit misled about eating dinner on the roof. You can have drinks and bar food on the roof, but dinner in the restaurant on the bottom floor. The restaurant was great, and the food was dlicious. Will deffinitely be back, but will just add some time to have a drink on the roof first next time."

  • "I was so stoked to go eat at zentan and get out of getting the same ok same ol. Me and my girlfriend really enjoyed the atmosphere and Adrian our server was very knowledgeable. I left it up to him to decide our evening and wow did he do an amazing job. The host were very just as friendly. Katie the manager came and welcomed us which made us feel special. Thank you zentan crew for an amazing night. And ask for Adrain when you go he is the man."

  • "I was skeptical about dining in this restaurant in the Kimpton, as I tend to be with most hotel restaurants. That said, we had a great dinner at Zentan. All four of us were pleased with our selections. The dishes were outstanding. The sushi very fresh. The menu interesting. Our server was outstanding - attentive with hovering, knowledgable and pleasant. I ordered the escolar crudo and sky fall maki at his suggestion. They were delicious! The beef eaters enjoyed their plates as well."

  • "From the initial greeting to the departure, the service was beyond compare. The greeter remembered our names; two managers came to our table. The several fantastic courses arrived very promptly. And the server was very knowledgeable and made our choices easy - both for the food courses and for the many gourmet sake choices. We will be going back. The only concern is the parking. It advertises valet, but when we arrived at 7pm the parking lot was full. They eventually took care of us, but this raises a concern for next time, as otherwise the parking in the area is not easy."

  • "One of the best Modern Asian Restaurant. Great place to go as a group as you can try a wide variety of dishes. The service was prompt and friendly. Definitely worth a try for the visitors as well as locals."

  • "This place has always served quality great tasting Sushi. This was my first time bak in 2 years so it was good to see that the quality was still up to par. I've had issues with the service in the past but that was not the case this time. Additionally, they added gluten free soy sauce for those of us with Celiacs. Thank you. Check this place out."

    Dined on 6/17/2014
  • "We have been twice in the past few weeks. Both times the food was very good; however, the service left a great deal to be desired. The first time, the waitress went way overboard in telling us what she liked (we really were not interested in her personal tastes and did not ask). The second time, the waitress had to be told more than once to give us more time to decide on drinks and meals (no sense of timing) and then had to be asked to refresh water. If you can overlook such service, the food is worth the visit."

  • "Surprised by wonderfulness of everything we tried. Small menu but wide-ranging one. Tried plates from every part of the menu. Loved it all. Dino kale salad really good. Grill items-perfect bites were as advertised. We would go back to try all of them. Sushi worth the price tag. Biggest surprise--the lamb curry recommended by our waitress. Great depth and layers of flavor."

  • "This restaurant is overpriced for the amount of food you get. The food itself left a lot to be desired. You should skip it on your next visit to Washington."

  • "this is my second review of Zentan, my first one was ecstatic - my second dinner was certainly very good, but i think we did not hit the high points in quite the same way. Black cod (Gindara) was fantastic. Hamachi sashimi delicious - Abara - also delicious. 007 sushi - meh, boring. Dessert sorbets - also kind of boring. Service was nice, but the place was busy and so less attentive and more standard. I'll still go back, but will be more careful about my selections to be sure i get the best of the best since my expectations are now quite high!"

  • "The interior is dark and lounge-like - very fun ambiance. The service was fine - but the bartenders are better than the waiter service. The food was quite good, though not all dishes are made equal. The pork belly is amazing. The skewer items are only on par with passed catering appetizers. Good drink options. Overall I would return, but there are certain things I wouldn't order again."

  • "We live in Logan Circle and decided to try Zentan over the Memorial Day weekend. We were not disappointed. The menu is varied and interesting with a definite Asian flair. The $19 lunch special is a true deal. The food is delicious and the mocktails lovely."
