We went with a group of 9 for a special occasion and the experience was excellent! The table was perfect (a round table in a spot that was semi-private), which made for great group conversations. The waitress was fantastic - she really knew the menu, spoke clearly, and brought the food out fast. Food was delicious - most of the dishes we ordered were unique and interesting, presented nicely, and tasted delicious. The ambiance was perfect - not too loud, not too quiet nor too empty, modern and trendy. Would definitely recommend this place!

Came with a group of five people. The drinks (cocktails, sake) were well made and served, and the food was delicious all around. A couple highlights were the Fire dragon roll, wagyu beef, brussel sprout dishes. We got lots of small plates, and shared family style. We all would definitely go again! The waitress of knowledgeable about the menu, and was able to provide excellent food and drink recommendations. Really, I can't think of anything that wasn't exactly how it should be at a restaurant like Zentan.

Love Zentan's food and their presentation. The mockhitoes are amazing! I didn't think I'd like raw kale, zentan's dino kale salad is so good and good for you! I love everything I had at Zentan. The service complimented their amazing food. Make sure you ask for Lou!

So - if you are a Nobu fan and don't want to have to pay Nobu prices - this is a find. When we arrived the place was just getting started for the night - there are two rooms and both can fill up - so be ready for an energetic scene. The wine list is mainly Sake though some varietals in addition. But the main reason is the food and it was great. We went for cooked hot dishes and all that we had were excellent in every way - while we are smallish eaters, we were totally satisfied and fulfilled by just three of the hot main dishes. I'd definitely return.

I think I have found my new local sushi place. Fish is very fresh. Reason for the 4 stars is for a couple of dishes. Hits: Escolar app. Spicy salmon roll. Cod. PORK Belly. BEIGNETS!!! They are the best I have ever had. Crunchy on the outside and moist and soft on the inside. Wow. Misses: Yellowtail App. The tosazu sauce was pretty bland. Chocolate lava cake was dry. Tho the passion fruit ice cream I had asked for was really good. The robata special was dry as well. Service was great. Server had good recommendations. I will definitely return but I know what I will order and what to skip. Highly recommend. Oh and after dinner you might want to have a drink at the roof top bar. That was Awesome!!!

I took my husband out for his birthday after several friends recommended this hidden gem. We were not disappointed. The goldeneye roll was a favorite, as were the crispy brussels sprouts, tempura rock shrimp and the dino kale salad. The food is small plates, modern pan-Asian (mostly Japanese, with a few touches of other East Asian cuisine). YUM, a definite favorite for an occasional splurge.

Went for lunch during restaurant week. Not impressed with selections offered. Had the eel, himachi and tako sushi. Eel was very good, but the octopus was chewy and the himachi tasted a little old. The bahn mi had good flavor, but nothing I would go out of my way for in the future. The duck reuben was good, but nothing special. Miso semifredo was like a solid block of ice, difficult to eat with a spoon, but good flavor. Wouldn't make a special trip.

We had an amazing dinner. The food was great, service and congeniality of the staff was tops ... We had a very nice time at Zentan. We recommend it for dinner. They serve a conventional breakfast there too ... It is NOT recommended by us. We had the buffet. The eggs were so runny, that I think for the first time in my life, I left most of my meal on my plate as we left.

I went to Zentan with some friends, and we were seated in a side room off of the main dining room. Until near the end of our meal, everything was great. The food was very good (the rock shrimp tempura was our favorite), our waitress was very pleasant and accommodating, and the restaurant was relatively quiet. But then one of the neighboring tables ordered a dish where you cook the beef yourself at your table. Things went downhill after that, mostly because smoke from the dish filled the small room we were sitting in, and the manager didn't seem like he was going to do anything about it. Needless to say, I got out of there as soon as I could. A disappointing ending to an otherwise great dinner.

The food at Zentan was wonderful and would have been even more so had there been a bit more of it. Except for the lamb curry, the other portions were small to microscopic. The gyu beef on a stick was more like a dab of meat -- or a dot on top of an "i". The lamb was fabulous as was the escolar, although the latter suffered from a similar deficiency as the beef though not as bad. I'm guessing that since the restaurant is attached to a higher brand hotel (Kimpton) that the prices automatically are higher than a standalone. Nevertheless, the overpricing and under-portioniong are a deterrent. The service was very good and our waitress was personable, knowledgeable and attentive without being overbearing. Just the right touch.

What is it with DC and a complete lack of understanding about sushi? The basic concept is nigiri or fish atop sushi rice. I rarely see anyone order anything but these fake rolls lathered in cream cheese and other incompatible sauces and topped with cornucopia. The food quality here is very high but it doesn't matter because everyone one is focused on pumping out these ridiculous rolls. Price is another issue and prevents this from becoming a regular spot. Much was made in the Post review of the new chef's addition of Pho to the menu but it wasn't even listed. [Typical Post omission.] The robata offerings are top notch but good luck getting out of here for less than $140 for two with a bottle of wine. Is $140 now hipster chump change?

We were disappointed in general: shabby atmosphere and clientele, waitress who was well-meaning but presumptive, kitchen ignored my serious allergy tho they were notified on my initial reservation and I told the waitress when we ordered our food. Service was slow. There was an interminable wait each time we ordered a bottle of wine. We were in the back where the waitresses never looked. Some of the food was very good with interesting flavors but sushi and rolls were mediocre quality. Supermarket sushi is better. We were told to share dishes but portions were so small there was not enough of any dish for 4 people to share properly. They should have told us to order more or made the dish for the size of our party.

Zentan is a different experience and we needed some help in ordering. You order many small dishes rather than whole entries. The service was great and we enjoyed the selections we made. Lots of flavor and different foods. We brought along our two year old and they were also very accommodating for her. We did not try the sushi this time, but based on our experience I would say it would be good. The quality, preparation, and presentation were all very good. A good time was had by all.

We wanted to find a place to have dinner on a rooftop, being tourists, and heard that this was the place. The food was great, but we were a bit misled about eating dinner on the roof. You can have drinks and bar food on the roof, but dinner in the restaurant on the bottom floor. The restaurant was great, and the food was dlicious. Will deffinitely be back, but will just add some time to have a drink on the roof first next time.

I was skeptical about dining in this restaurant in the Kimpton, as I tend to be with most hotel restaurants. That said, we had a great dinner at Zentan. All four of us were pleased with our selections. The dishes were outstanding. The sushi very fresh. The menu interesting. Our server was outstanding - attentive with hovering, knowledgable and pleasant. I ordered the escolar crudo and sky fall maki at his suggestion. From the initial greeting to the departure, the service was beyond compare. The greeter remembered our names; two managers came to our table. The several fantastic courses arrived very promptly. And the server was very knowledgeable and made our choices easy - both for the food courses and for the many gourmet sake choices. We will be going back. The only concern is the parking. It advertises valet, but when we arrived at 7pm the parking lot was full. They eventually took care of us, but this raises a concern for next time, as otherwise the parking in the area is not easy.
