Zentan still has the best, freshest sushi in the city (or just about anywhere). I wish I could rate the sushi separately. But, with the loss of the first two chefs, the other food has lost a some of its taste sophistication and umami. It's still good, but it's not that wow factor delicious like it used to be. Flavors are milder now, there's no extra pop to the dishes.

The food was excellent, but the service was superb! Our server helped with recommendations, all of which were wonderful, and she was attentive without hovering, and made us feel very pampered. We were a party of 4, there for a special occasion, shared an appetizer and 4-5 small plates, each had a couple drinks, and desserts....and were out of there with a bill running right at $50 per person. In DC, I found that amazing considering the high level of quality of the food, service and wine. I would come back here DEFINITELY!

Stayed at the Donovan House next door and reviewed the menu. My family loves Asian food so I thought this would be convenient and close as we were traveling to DC that day. We sat in the back at a nice booth for four people. We ordered the steak skewers and the broccoli salad. Both were delicious. Had salmon sushi and spicy tuna maki. My son had the pork dumplings also. Everything was great. A bit noisy and sometime the waiter forgot about us, but otherwise it was great.

Having dined at Zentan under the former chef, we were greatly disappointed. The new chef seems to take the notion of small-plate Japanese style dining to an extreme. We ordered several small dishes starting with the kale salad. This was the first disappointment -- someone please bring back the 17 (or was it 21?) ingredient salad that no one could stop eating. Except for the shrimp tempura other dishes lacked flavor or interest and in one the beef was too tough to eat.

It was good overall, a bit more pricey than I estimated. Also, only one of the two menus was available to order from. I would suggest asking the waiter/waitress if you're not sure of all the ingredients in the meal as some are not in English. The restaurant is gorgeous, nice laid-back atmosphere and makes for a nice get together.

We were in DC for a couple of nights and stayed in the adjoining Donovan Hotel. I'm so glad that we decided to try the adjoining restaurant as it was undoubtedly the best, most creative sushi I've ever eaten. I had an apple-centered cocktail that was amazing, and we ended it with a wonderful dessert. I wish I had noted our server's name as she was outstanding--very good at explaining and selling the food, enthusiastic about our choices, attentive in just the right amount. When we're back in DC, I hope to make time to go back. Well done.

Nami took fantastic care of us. Small plates, sashimi/nigiri, maki, hop-smoked pork belly, and the very best crispy roasted brussels sprouts you will ever taste. It's noisy and energetic, but the food and service are excellent. Try the flight of junmai daiginjo saki, or their signature 'fizz' cocktail. My wife and I had a great experience for her birthday.

We were three sharing dishes--had a must have starter (popcorn shrimp with candied walnuts--VERY sumptuous). Service is attentive but not intrusive. Good wine selection, love the atmosphere. Diverse crowd--all ages--including families. Zentan is a welcome treat, especially after visiting the rooftop bar. Though the night was chilly the view and the friendly staff all made for a lovely evening!

Our visit to Zentan on a busy Friday night was the first of many to come. The food was delicious and above our expectations: we ordered hotate, chicken-lettuce wrap (the best course of the night), fire cracker maki, fire dragon maki, and bignets (a surprisingly yummy take on a classic dessert). We also had the special cocktail of the night and it was superb. Our server for the evening was attentive without being intrusive and gave us great suggestions on what to order. We are already looking forward to the Fall menu!

We went with a group of 9 for a special occasion and the experience was excellent! The table was perfect (a round table in a spot that was semi-private), which made for great group conversations. The waitress was fantastic - she really knew the menu, spoke clearly, and brought the food out fast. Food was delicious - most of the dishes we ordered were unique and interesting, presented nicely, and tasted delicious. The ambiance was perfect - not too loud, not too quiet nor too empty, modern and trendy. Would definitely recommend this place!

Came with a group of five people. The drinks (cocktails, sake) were well made and served, and the food was delicious all around. A couple highlights were the Fire dragon roll, wagyu beef, brussel sprout dishes. We got lots of small plates, and shared family style. We all would definitely go again! The waitress of knowledgeable about the menu, and was able to provide excellent food and drink recommendations. Really, I can't think of anything that wasn't exactly how it should be at a restaurant like Zentan.

So - if you are a Nobu fan and don't want to have to pay Nobu prices - this is a find. When we arrived the place was just getting started for the night - there are two rooms and both can fill up - so be ready for an energetic scene. The wine list is mainly Sake though some varietals in addition. But the main reason is the food and it was great. We went for cooked hot dishes and all that we had were excellent in every way - while we are smallish eaters, we were totally satisfied and fulfilled by just three of the hot main dishes. I'd definitely return.

I think I have found my new local sushi place. Fish is very fresh. Reason for the 4 stars is for a couple of dishes. Hits: Escolar app. Spicy salmon roll. Cod. PORK Belly. BEIGNETS!!! They are the best I have ever had. Crunchy on the outside and moist and soft on the inside. Wow. Misses: Yellowtail App. The tosazu sauce was pretty bland. Chocolate lava cake was dry. Tho the passion fruit ice cream I had asked for was really good. The robata special was dry as well. Service was great. Server had good recommendations. I will definitely return but I know what I will order and what to skip. Highly recommend. Oh and after dinner you might want to have a drink at the roof top bar. That was Awesome!!!

I took my husband out for his birthday after several friends recommended this hidden gem. We were not disappointed. The goldeneye roll was a favorite, as were the crispy brussels sprouts, tempura rock shrimp and the dino kale salad. The food is small plates, modern pan-Asian (mostly Japanese, with a few touches of other East Asian cuisine). YUM, a definite favorite for an occasional splurge.

Went for lunch during restaurant week. Not impressed with selections offered. Had the eel, himachi and tako sushi. Eel was very good, but the octopus was chewy and the himachi tasted a little old. The bahn mi had good flavor, but nothing I would go out of my way for in the future. The duck reuben was good, but nothing special. Miso semifredo was like a solid block of ice, difficult to eat with a spoon, but good flavor. Wouldn't make a special trip.

I went to Zentan with some friends, and we were seated in a side room off of the main dining room. Until near the end of our meal, everything was great. The food was very good (the rock shrimp tempura was our favorite), our waitress was very pleasant and accommodating, and the restaurant was relatively quiet. But then one of the neighboring tables ordered a dish where you cook the beef yourself at your table. Things went downhill after that, mostly because smoke from the dish filled the small room we were sitting in, and the manager didn't seem like he was going to do anything about it. Needless to say, I got out of there as soon as I could. A disappointing ending to an otherwise great dinner.
