A word from Zengo - NYC
Zengo is a sophisticated blend of Latin-Asian styles and flavors. Chef Richard Sandoval, whose accolades include Bon Appétit Restaurateur of the Year and Mexico’s Toque d’Oro, artfully spins Latin-Asian ingredients into beautifully balanced dishes. Light preparations and tasting portions invite sampling and sharing a variety of items. To complement the cuisine, Zengo offers one of the largest collections of tequila and agave-based spirits in the United States. Guests may sample over 400 varieties in the downstairs Tequila Library. Zengo also boasts an extensive list of Latin wines and Japanese sakes, which are best enjoyed at the mezzanine level Wine & Sake Bar. The cocktail menu showcases Latin-Asian classics made with fine spirits and fresh, hand-muddled fruits.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The serving portion is quite small -- for the price of a main entrée, the serving was small... and the churros size was a churritos"

  • "We were two tables of 8 ppl on separate reservations / tabs. Was suppose to have 2 waiters instead had one. She was completely off. Food orders were mixed up between tables. Had to go to bar to retrieve our own drinks because ..? Given that food orders are assigned to specific table #s when placed in the kitchen, it was hard to acknowledge it was our fault that our food orders got confused. We order 1 item & received 3 of another item or none at all. One table had apps, entrees & Dessert before other table received apps. 45-50 mins before food began to arrive well after initial ordering. They need to work on better organization & teamwork. Mgr attempted to "fix" issues way too late & was apologetic.Downstairs lounge/bar closes @12am"

  • "This restaurant is not as good as other Sandoval restaurants. This is the second time dining here. The first was when it first opened & both my dining partner and I agreed we did not enjoy the food. I was looking forward to returning to see the improvements. There are just too many wonderful restaurants in NY to be disappointed twice. I ordered the Thai Snapper which I thought would be flavorful & succulent - it was neither. It was fried pieces of snapper, dry as a bone with some salad with pieces of mango and pineapple. The lettuce wasn't crisp. Our waitress was very pleasant and the cocktails were good. The appetizers were also tasty; We enjoyed the Guacamole with Crab and Tacos. The lettuce wraps once again had wilted lettuce."

  • "Our food took a while to come out but was excellent when it finally arrived. The manager was nice enough to buy our group of 7 a round of drinks to make up for the delay in the kitchen. Sushi rolls were small but tasty, empanadas were excellent, the flat bread was great and I really liked the short rib. My friends were raving about the Korean fried chicken too. Definitely will go back even though the service was lacking and the dining area was cold."

  • "We didn't know what to expect. But this trendy place did not disappoint. Great food and service."

  • "Overall, pleasant experience. Tables were well spaced and you could carry on a conversation with members of your party"

  • "I loved this restaurant the first time I went but the second visit was not up to par. The food was okay but my $34 cod entree was tiny with the rice in a separate bowl which I found odd. The appetizers were okay but for the price the food was just not good enough this time. The bar is a little too noisy which makes dining with friends unpleasant. Also the banquette we were sitting in was loose and every time the guy behind us moved the bench shook. On the positive side I love the decor and our server was pleasant. I just wish the food & atmosphere had been as nice. I am undecided if I will return. Maybe."

  • "Nice menu with lots of fusion dishes mixing latin and asian influences which served primarily as tapas or small plates. A short list of larger entrees is also available."

  • "Innovative food, interesting setting, thoughtful combinations of food. Our family of 6 greatly enjoyed the various entrees, particularly the black bass, the shrimp rolls, and the flatbreads!"

  • "My husband and I came here for a late dinner after a show, and although at 10 the place was not even that packed we waited 25 min just for the drinks.. Then they got my drink wrong, so I had to wait another 10 min. The food was ok, the overall experience this time around was just average.. And definitely not worth the prices they charge you! I might not go back"

  • "Took a friend here from out of town and thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. The food was incredible, and the ambiance was lively. Will definitely come back again. I hear they have great happy hour specials until 8pm."

  • "the booths have really big and comfortable seats. it was just the 2 of us and the restaurant gave us a large comfy booth! the servers were very attentive, the ambiance was great and the food overall was very good. the volcano sushi roll was excellent."

  • "Zengo had a special vegetarian (including seafood) menu with strict veg options. All the small plates we ordered were delicious, albeit pricey. Quality of food was fantastic - no quibs. Definitely make a reservation during the usual peak times. Server recommendations were wonderful."

  • "The food, drinks, decor and service were excellent! The food also came out very quickly and we would order it all, again. I have to add that when we called (as soon as Zengo opened) that day to add 2 more people to our reservation (bringing it to 5) the host said they couldn't do that. We said we understood, but were then very disappointed when we saw several open tables that could accommodate our group's size that were open from the beginning to the end of our meal."

  • "I came here with 3 friends on a Saturday night. The fusion style rotates every 3 months, but at this time it was a fusion of Japan and Mexico. There were 2 vegetarians in the group and they had a separate menu to easily show all of the vegetarian options available. I ordered the scallops which was delicious! They were cooked properly so that they were still tender and the sides and flavors were excellent for the whole dish. Each of my friends was very pleased with their entrees.... not a drop of food was left on our plates. Service was very attentive and the ambiance is lovely. There is comfortable spacing between tables and very warm furniture with modern decor that make for a very nice dining experience. I would definitely come back!"

  • "My sister and I went for resturant week, but ended up ordering off the regular menu. We picked 3 small plates (mushroom flat bread, spicy crab guacamole & pork belly sliders) and 1 entree (crispy tofu) to share between us. NEITHER of us could pick a favorite and can't wait to go back and order it all again! The hostess and waitress were personable, attentive and friendly. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that neither of us loved our drinks (margarita & red sangria)."

  • "Wanted to try Zengo for Restaurant Week. It took 15 minutes before I was given water, another five before I was given the cocktail menu, another 10 before my order was taken, and another 10 before my drink arrived. We sat in a booth and each time the gentleman behind me shifted the entire booth shook - I felt like I was in an earthquake. The striped bass option for restaurant week was sold out and their sub was the salmon which was made in chicken broth - when I informed the waiter I'm a pescatarian and did not want my fish cooked in chicken broth he had no other options. Our cocktail glasses remained empty and sightings of our waiter were few and far between. The food was good, although not exceptional - service was terrible!"

  • "We went during restaurant week, which was disappointing as the menu was extremely limited. The food was good, portions okay but really nothing special. The service was outstanding, we had a very attentive server who was delightful. The glass water bottle on the table was funky and the interior design is really pretty, and for a large room the acoustics were pretty accommodating for conversation."

  • "I visited Zengo during NY restaurant week, intending to dine from their pre fixe menu. I arrived shortly after my friend who had made her way to the upstairs bar for a drink. When I entered, I was blown away by the design of the space. It is gorgeous, very modern and aesthetically pleasing. It's what you expect from a big city restaurant, with 3 levels of bar and dining space, a hip but not overdone vibe and (most importantly) very kind staff! I was pleasantly surprised that they had a gluten free menu so we decided to order off of it and pass on the restaurant week menu. We ordered two sushi rolls and the shrimp lettuce wraps. Everything tasted amazing and the service was wonderful. We will be back, and often!"

  • "I went here with a friend for a late dinner around 9:45 on a Friday. The decor and the vibe inside was very nice. It had a loungey feel and comfortable seating. My friend and I ordered the spicy crab guacamole to start before we got the pre-fix menu for restaurant week. It was very spicy and delicious. A good amount of crab considering the price. They had interesting cocktails. I had a cucumber martini with some spicy mix on the rim. Very hot, but I like hot. The appetizers were great. My friend had the thai style coconut soup and I had a salmon ceviche. They were both very tasty. Our mains were good as well. My friend had a Filipino style steak and I had crispy tofu. Server was great. Super friendly and energetic. The dessert was not great"

  • "This is Restaurant Week in NYC and Zengo looked like a good choice to try their selections. Unfortunately the Restaurant Week menu was not very interesting. We went off that menu and ordered off the regular menu. We shared to appetizers: The Vegetarian Rool (in Soy Paper) and a Shrimp and Peanut dish . Both were tasty and interesting. Very good! We ordered the fish special... Miso Glazed Black Cod. Disappointment!!! It was ok, nothing special...Cost $32--our server did not quote a price and we failed to ask. Shocked when the check came. Our fault, we should have asked, we would have been much happier with the Fried Chicken. Service was good. Would definitely go back and try the Ceviche and other appetizers and the Fried Chicken."

  • "Considering we went for restaurant week, first impressions were poor. We stood waiting at the maitre d station while 3 people didn't acknowledge our small group. One was on the phone and two others avoided eye contact. A nice "welcome to Zengo" and a smile would have gone a long way. The coat check person showed us to our table. The gentleman who removed extra place settings from our table, poured us water and asked for our drink order. No introduction, we mistook him for our busboy. He further refused to put our alcohol order, a bottle of wine on a separate tab. The food was good--it's a shame the staff seems so untrained."

  • "Tried this for restaurant week, they told us you can only order for restaurant week if the whole party orders it. It seemed to us that they were participating, but werent promoting it at all, we only got one RW week menu for a party of four. The RW choices werent that special, although they have a lovely regular menu. The food was good, but not spectacular. Those in our party that ordered the steak got it cold. I was the only one brave enough to send it back, but it came back warm. THey also have the shortest wine pours that I have seen in a restaurant. Service was friendly."

Whether your preference is saki or tequila, sushi or tacos...all are lovingly prepared! To top it off, the knowledgeable wait staff make excellent suggestions and are most accommodating."

  • "the menu had a lot of great choices and was easy to share. Great ambiance for a group with high ceilings comfortable table and seating. The wait staff was very accommodating both in service and privacy. They allowed my large group 2 stay at the table for as long as we wanted on a Saturday night."
