A word from Ze Mean Bean Cafe
Come dine at the most unique restaurant in Baltimore. Ze Mean Bean Café is an eclectic Eastern European restaurant and wine bar. We serve everything from pierogis and holupkis to upscale fare with a Slavic twist. Everything is made from scratch and our extensive wine list has something for everyone.
As our name suggests, we opened our doors in July of 1995 as a unique Eastern European Coffeehouse and Café. Ahh… yes, that’s where the “Bean” in Ze Mean Bean comes from! And the “Ze”? That denotes our “European” roots. The original concept was simple: owner Yvonne Dornic is of Eastern European decent. Her father is from Czechoslovakia, and her mother’s background is Polish and Ukrainian. Yvonne wanted to create an environment much like the coffeehouses of Eastern Europe, which served as social gathering places and outlets for local musicians and artists. Ze Mean Bean Café definitely exudes old world charm!

Our dinner was excellent. It was
my hubby's birthday and he had a great time. He had the short ribs and I had the char. The Russian beer was a treat also. Service was perfect as usual. Can't wait to go back."

Cozy, good food, superb jazz band,
warm ambience, beautiful Saturday evening ... We are glad we discovered this little place."

We didn't get checked in on
Opentable, because the waitress couldn't hear over the band. After waiting for 10 min for the drink orders, we had a wine flight which could not balance on a wobbly table and Czech bitters instead of Polish buffalo grass brandy. (If you pride yourself in unique Eastern/Central European cocktails, then your staff should know them inside and out). The cheese plate had more fruit than cheese and neither the cheese nor the fruit had any originality. The food was delicious, but, once again, not what we ordered. Some people might like the band on top of the less than eight tables, but more people like getting what they ordered on a table and chairs that don't resemble a yard sale thirty years ago."

We had a lovely time. Not my
favorite table in the house but still had a lovely time"

Food was wonderful, but service
was slow and somewhat unresponsive. We had to ask other servers to find our server to get drink refills, more water, more bread. No one ever came over and asked if everything was just ok. We had a reservation, but when we came in and said so, we were met with a wave in the air and the comment "oh just sit anywhere." Not sure having a reservation meant anything."

We were there on a late, cold
Sunday afternoon looking for a warm, cozy place after the theater. It is a favorite of ours--love the Eastern European food--so good on a cold day and the friendly professional service. There are a number of choices that are not Eastern European, but this Sunday we were looking for borscht, stew, sausages, potato pancakes, and the like. We also can't pass up dessert. The owner's mother makes them and they are great. They also have a Sunday brunch menu and live jazz at various times as well as specials. There is an interesting wine list and they are capable of making a decent mixed drink and cup of coffee. This is a treat for our daughter and her husband who live in LA and have lots of choices there."

Also love the live music!"

We had 1:00 pm reservations for
brunch. The place was 2/3 rds empty, yet our watiress was missing most of the time when we needed her. She was polite and perky, but attentive would have been better. Our food was mediocre: My hash browns tasted as if they had been cooked the night before and left out on the counter, dry and cold. same for my un-distinct slices of bread. The saving grace was the music. Fine musicianship, even though 3 pieces in that small room makes for lots of shouting and mis-communications between waitress and guests. We found if we talked during the band's breaks we could eat while they played."

Went looking for a jazzy dinner
spot with a wide selection on their menu. The menu was awesome and the food was very good. The Eastern European Jazzy music wasn't exactly my taste, but it was good and create a wonderful setting."

The food was tasty but would not
recommend for children. The service wasn't great could of been better. A better spot for a few adults or a romantic couple."

I must say that my wife and I had
an awesome time. The food was great, the waitress was outstanding, and the guitar player made the night complete. We will definitely be coming back. Thanks again, Mr and Mrs Glowack"

I reserved a table for a tuesday
night date at 9pm. There were zero people there. Literally we were the only ones there besides the staff. The food was excellent and the services was good but the atmosphere wasn't that great. Fortunately the date went well and there weren't any awkward silences so we both had a good time. I would definitely come back."

We returned to Ze Mean Bean with
friends after a very good dinner there early this year. As was the last time, the pirogies were fabulous. I don't recall what we ate the first time. This time my friend and I ordered the fish. When they put the plate in front of me the whiff of the fish smelled like fish. Not a good sign of freshness. We both agreed that the fish was tasteless. MIne was luke warm. It was served on top of potato pancakes which were soggy. My husband had Hungarian goulash. He thought it was very good. He said that my friend and I should never had ordered fish. He advised that we should always figure out what the essence of a restaurant is. He decided you shouldn't order fish in an Eastern European restaurant."

Whenever both service and quality
of food is good it's a plus then we orderede a wine off the menu and the server told us honestly they did not have that wine, offered another option , let us taste it all for the same price per glass."

Overall, the food was good, but
everything else was terrible. Right from the beginning, there was a problem, we had a reservation for 5 and they didn't have a table that could accommodate us, so we were seated at a 4 top with an extra chair and waited for a near by 2 top to leave so we could put the tables together...it took at least an hour. The restaurant is the size of a shoebox and had a 3 piece band with an amp, it was so loud conversation was impossible. Worst of all, our waitress was absolutely terrible. I timed her, it took 24 minutes from the time she asked if we needed anything else to the time she actually brought us the check. She was slow, inattentive, focused on gossiping with her co-workers, which we overheard. Awful."

We enjoyed a great variety of
foods. Everything was delicious! My husband lived in Hungary for nearly 2 years, and the Hungarian goulash took him back to Kaposvar. Our server was wonderful. The lighting is a bit dim for reading the menu (small font size). We will definitely return; a definite gem in Baltimore!"

WE TOOK A CRUISE THAT WENT OUT OF
BALTIMORE. OUR FRIENDS FROM THE WEST COAST WERE IN D.C. SO WE DECIDED TO MEET. I FOUND THIS GEM ONLINE. THE FELLS POINT AREA OF BALTIMORE APPEARS TO BE MAKING A NICE COMEBACK. ZE MEAN BEAN FITS PERFECTLY. SMALL, COZY AND ECCLECTICLY DECORATED, THE BRUNCH MENU HAS THE TRADITIONAL FAVORITES. HOWEVER, BEING AN EASTERN EUROPEAN RESTAURANT, THE SPECIALTIES WERE INCREDIBLE. IT WAS A QUAINT REMINDER OF MY GRANDPARENTS OVER 50 YEARS AGO. THE PIEROGIES - WELL DON;T LEAVE WITHOUT TRYING. AND TRY ONE OF THEIR BREAKFAST SPECIALTIES, BE PREPARED TO TAKE HOME. PORTIONS ARE HUGE. COUPLE THIS WITH A TERIFIC JAZZ TRIO AND THE FAMILY PICTURES, A WONDERFUL STOP. LOOKING FORWARD TO GOING BACK P.S - GREAT COFFEE"

Great neighborhood place in
Baltimore. The food was terrific, reminded me of my grandmother's and mother's home cooked Ukrainian meals. Will come back and bring friends."

We had a lovely lunch. The service
was perfect - we took the servers recommendations and were so pleased! It was quiet, so we could talk and eat and enjoy our time together. I would recommend the restaurant to anyone."

I'm gluten intolerant, which
excludes me from much of the traditional slavic menu at Ze Mean Bean. Wanting to try something other than the holupkis, which I've had both other times I've dined here, I asked about the Chicken Kiev. It's breaded normally, but the chef was willing to make me a special, gluten-free version of the dish. Served with a salad and green beens, it was fantastically delicious. My partner had the crab meal and was in heaven the whole time. Paired with an appetizer of borscht, some chardonnay, and the guitarist, it was a lovely and romantic evening."

My husband and I had dinner at Ze
Mean Bean Café after running the Baltimore Half Marathon and I have got to say, wow!!!...what a great meal. Love the atmosphere as well. It is really cozy and they had a fantastic jazz trio playing that night, which added to the ambience. Overall, terrific time! We will return soon!"
