Diner Reviews
  • "The food is fresh and full of flavor created by an interesting mix of spices. If Mediterranean spices are not your thing, then this tapas restaurant is not for you. The grilled octopus was very tender and mild flavored-the only item we tried that was not distinctly flavored. The service was the worst I've experienced in recent memory. We ordered and did not see a waitperson for 20 minutes at a time thereafter. No one checked to see if we would like to order more tapas plates. Our water glasses would go dry. When it was time to pay, we waited 25 minutes before I got up from my table and went to the host stand and asked for my bill. We were at the restaurant for 1.5 hours for 6 tapas plates and one beer."

  • "The menu is still great after all these years. Old favorites and new additions. Truly nothing like it in the area."

  • "The food was excellent and the service outstanding. We will have lunch there again soon."

  • "Four of us started with the cocktails, shared 12 dishes and 2 desserts. We were happy with everything and particularly liked the octopus santorini, seared bay salmon, bronzino, seasonal mushrooms, and water melon salad."

  • "Zaytinya is an amazing restaurant that never disappoints. The cuisine is fresh, delightful, and flavorful. The ambiance and energy is warm and relaxed chic. The floor to ceiling glass windows add a beautiful flair to the restaurant. Zaytinya is one of my two "go to" restaurants in this vibrant section of DC; Jaleo is the other."

  • "I'm moving from DC next week so I had to make one more trip! We were at a large round table against the window and stairs. The table might have been a tad big for a party of 6, but it was better than being squished a table too small."

  • "I've eaten here several times - in small groups and just as a party of 2. always delish, always attentive service. I had the falafel for the first time after steering clear because falafel can upset my stomach but it wasn't greasy or heavy at all! Other favorites include the shrimp, brussels, and obviously hummus."

  • "Having eaten at Zaytinya on two previous occasions, I was sorry to see that it has recently suffered from the same complacency as Jaleo -- probably stemming from continued demand from tourists in Chinatown. Lamb chops were a combination of gristle and rubber. Our server was nonexistant. Took three interventions to get a bottle of sparkling water, and half of our food order never arrived. If you know Turkish food, Meze in Adams Morgan is a much better option. For Lebanese, Me Jana in Arlington is worth the drive. No mas, Jose Andres."

  • "Food was great. Service was rushed This was an overall great culinary adventure"

  • "My favorite food in DC. A little loud so don't go there for a romantic date, go there with your family visiting in town, friends, or something like that. The food is amazing and you don't have to feel too guilty about pigging out here either."

  • "Had a great dinner with family. Lana was a great and attentive server. I will definitely be back to bring more of my family."

  • "We found the food delicious and the service excellent, but it was really difficult to hear one another at our table of five. I suspect that, even had it been two people, it would have been difficult. Aside from offering great food and service, Zaytinya is a great place for people-watching and seems like a hot spot, but not the place if you want meaningful conversation."

  • "Excellent food! The falafel was amazing!Overall great meal outdoors on the patio."

  • "I am always skeptical when a restaurant gets rave reviews but the food was excellent. We decided to eat outside because it was very noisy and cold inside."
    Dined on 7/19/2014
  • "Our 1st visit to Zaytinya was absolutely amazing and it will certainly not be our last! All of our food choices (especially the salads and whole bronzino) were perfectly prepared and delicious; the service was helpful and attentive; and the opportunity to dine outside made the experience complete."

  • "Had to wait 15 mins for our (pre-reserved) table and service was fairly slow (though very pleasant and polite). Hot and cold mezze dishes were all good, though not as outstanding as I expected from this place's reputation. Busy and buzzy atmosphere, but our booth gave us space to be comfortable and chat. Great bottle of Chateau Musar. All this was fine for a casual Friday night catch-up with good friends, and we enjoyed our evening, but not a standout for a special dinner."

  • "After a hard week working with few breaks, dinner at Zaytinya was the perfect reward. The weather was lovely and they have a wonderful patio dining set up. We took the recommendations of our server and were not disappointed. Honestly everything we tried was delicious. The Crispy Brussel Afelia were particularly tasty as was the roasted cauliflower. We tried a traditional Keftedes Kapama and were only disappointed when the plate was bare. Capping it off with two mini desserts - the Chocolate Rose and Turkish Coffee Chocolate Cake - the Chocolate Rose was our collective favorite. Everything was fantastic."

  • "Overall great restaurant, interesting food. Only disappointment was the limited Gluten Free options"

  • "We dined as a family with 2- 7 year olds and the food and service was perfection! The food was fantastic!"

  • "Carefully and creatively composed assembly of flavors bursting from every dish and its sauce. An exciting place to be a vegetarian. Our waiter, Hector, was quick, knowledgeable, and so congenial he brightened us all up with his enthusiasm for the menu items. It's a very satisfying experience (except for the noise)."

  • "The food at Zaytinya is spectacular; it's what keeps me coming back. But the reception at the host stand is atrocious every single time. If we stop by hoping to snag a table, the reception is downright hostile. For this visit (on a weeknight), we had a reservation and still the hostess acted like she was doing us a favor. Whatever happened to a warm greeting? The day will come when Zaytinya is not full every night. Maybe then the managers will train their host staff that even if the food is excellent and the server is great, a nasty welcome at the door will lead to a bad review every time."

  • "I had a great work lunch at Zatinya the other week! The food was amazing, and all the people who waited on our table were fantastic. However, the gentleman I believed to be our "main waiter", only showed up every now and then, which was a little frustrating."

  • "Food here is excellent, unique, fresh...as all the Jose Andres locations, but be ready to pay for it. Been to many other Turkish cuisine restaurants that were almost as good but half the price. Drinks extremely expensive...in line with the rest of DC but bar tending def. a short pour...spoke to manager about that; she was gracious and responded appropriately. Great buzz and energy, and beautiful decor...go and enjoy."

  • "We had a wonderful time at Zaytinya. Our server's (Chris) recommendations were all spot on. All of the plates we sampled were excellent, but his recommendations were the best. We look froward to returning to sample more dishes."

  • "Everything was perfect all around! But the best part of the dining experience was how easy and accessible everything was for a dear friend who was using an electric scooter. The restaurant is right on a Metro stop, and my friend had no problem entering the restaurant or steering the scooter to our table. Five stars for accessibility AND the food."

  • "Had a perfect day to enjoy lunch outdoors during the DC summer. Catching up with great friends over fabulous food and very attentive service. The brussels sprouts and the okra dishes were two of the favorites. Spanakopita re-done as an eggroll didn't quite work; light, crispy phyllo can't be replaced by the thicker, chewier egg roll skin... but apart from that, everything was delicious."

  • "We went here for lunch after meeting someone on Amtrak from Maryland who recommended it. We had just seen Ford Theatre where Lincoln was shot and were then heading to the National Zoo. We got there at 11:30 and were glad we did as it got very busy for lunch. Waiter was very patient with us at explaining all the foods. My husband and I each tried food from the fixed price menu at $25. It was a great deal so we got 8 different items. Those that I didn't especially like, my husband loved and visa versa. We were very full, not rushed, happy to experiment a little. Loved the puff bread that accompanied the meal as well. Very light and great with everything."

  • "The food was great and service was very good. Recommend the Taramasalata, falafel, and octopus dishes. To drink, the Papa Prasinos."

  • "This was my first time at Zaytinya. The wait staff was knowledgeable and very efficient. The food was very nice, I especially liked the goat cheese and the lentil patties. But on a rainy Tuesday night, the place was packed to the gills and very noisy. If you like a bustling place, then go for it."

  • "Hummus - Salty & terrible. We pointed this out, so this was taken out of our bill, but the taste lingered long after we did not pay! Tzatziki - This was cucumber diced in yogurt. Not like any tzatziki I have had before. Terrible, & for a moment I thought I was eating cucumber raita, such was the disorientation Dolmades - Ok Baba Ghannoush - OK Lentil Kofte - Terrible Aubergine fried - Terrible and soggy Lamb - Terrible Fish - Terrible White wine - Atrocious Cardboard would have tasted better. The food uniformly was just awful and the only pleasant thing about the meal was the bread. The wine did not get any better with time. I have had better Greek food in trailers in Athens"

  • "The waiter was very rude. He rushed us to order and also put his arms in front of my colleague's face as she was telling a story. He was very impatient and it was obvious to all of us."

  • "Food was amazing and great variety. This was our second time there and haven't had a dish yet that wasn't good."

  • ""Small plates" restaurants are a dime a dozen these days, but I was impressed by Zaytinya. Although it is enormous and has a slick commercial feel, the food is terrific and staff are great. Since I have food allergies, they gave me special menus with safe items, which really helped speed things up (I can be indecisive). Since I could not eat the bread, they offered me some sliced cucumber (which they then charged $2 for--not a big deal, but really?) All of the food was delicious, especially the vegetables (amazing grilled figs/mushrooms and bean salad). The Lebanese Syrah is terrific--I definitely recommend it. The restaurant was deafening inside, so I definitely recommend sitting outside. Totally worth a visit!"

  • "Best restaurant on our trip. Not one bad item was brought to us. Everything was excellent"

  • "Though this may not be "by definition" a kid-friendly place, they did a wonderful job accommodating our large party, which included 3 young children. The waitress was very patient and kind and enthusiastic about the menu. The food was beyond compare. Zaytinya is the complete package and will be on my DC itinerary every time I am fortunate enough to be there."

  • "My husband and I came to Zaytinya for a special dinner and it did not disappoint! We did the chef's tasting menu with drink pairings. The food was delicious and the drinks were inventive. Would definitely recommend to friends!"
