Diner Reviews
  • "The small plates make ordering a lot of different dishes and sharing them with friends easy. The food is very good."

  • "As someone who usually detests the vegetarian / vegan options available at most dining establishments, I loved Zaytinya's diverse, hearty, and savory collection of tapas. If you're trying to find common ground with someone who does not consume meat, this is a great spot for a night out."

  • "The tapa plates are way too small for their price. The drinks were too expensive as well"

  • "It was a Sunday evening, we were early for our reserved table, but were received warmly and seated right away. Our waiter was pleasant, professional and gave excellent advice on the great variety of dishes available. Time passed quickly as plates were set in front of us accompanied with warm bread. We shared each others food exploring many different combinations. All were winners, no plate was left unfinished, but we left just enough room to share desert(s) and finish with a traditional Greek drink. A wonderful evening indeed!"

  • "Zaytinya redefines the dining experiene with a diverse menu of unique options cooked to perfection coupled with second to none service. The hummus is second to non here and must be tried by everyone."

  • "There were four of us -- one meat eater and three vegetarians. We were all able to find many things that we wanted to try, and because the dishes were all appetizer-sized, we were able try a bunch. Everything was clearly very fresh, and the flavors were wonderful."

  • "Zaytinya had a great selection of Mediterranean small plates, they even had bottle of wine from a tiny island in Turkey I'd visited! Overall, great experience, wouldn't expect anything less from Jose Andres!"

  • "Horrible experience. We were a party 4 and we were seated upstairs with a table that was very small, nudged against the fireplace. The table is adequate for a party of 2. The service was slow and the waiter was very robotic and not at all attentive, empty plates left on the table and we had to ask for clean plates. The food quality was not the standard that I have experienced here in the past. Zaytinya use to be one of my favorite restaurants. I was very disappointed and although the food was okay I will never dine at Zaytinya due to poor service lack of professionalism and total experience. I will never recommend Zaytinya and in fact I will voice my experience to friends and family to persuade them not to dine there."

  • "I took a group of 6 here after organizing an all-day meeting. It was simply FANTASTIC. The server was game to suggest food for us - all her suggestions were utterly delicious - and was overall very helpful and friendly and had no problem splitting our check 6 ways with an itemized receipt. The service was fast and the food was wonderful, every last bite of it. The noise level was perfect for us being able to hear ourselves talk. This was one of of the only Penn Quarter restaurants I hadn't been to before, and I am a big fan of Jose Andres, but wow - this one wins! I will definitely be back."

  • "Zatinya has one of the best, largest and most interesting vegetarian selections in the D.C. area, with great ambiance and good drinks."

  • "Great find, really busy so reservations are a must if u r eating during a normal meal time. The waitress we had was very nice and accommodating. We had a hair in our lamb meatball, but they replaced it with a new order and didn't charge us for it. That was the only bad part of our experience. Great for group get-togethers and fun for adults."

  • "Food quality and taste have been extremely deteriorated since my last visit beginning of the year. Too expensive, spent over $350 for three people!"
    Dined on 7/24/2014
  • "If you come with a small group you get to try more of the dishes. The food is just amazing!"

  • "Crowded and vibrant at lunch. Enjoyed the buzz and the very tasty cuisine."

  • "Zaytinya is one of the few high end restaurants in DC that I find is always worth the trip. For $25, you can get the 4-course mezze lunch, which includes 3 small plates and a dessert. I opted for a couple of my favorite small plates (Imam Bayld, a rich and delicious baked eggplant dish, and Shish Taouk, which is grilled chicken and tomatoes with a sort of garlic aioli) and a dessert. The yogurt dessert is a lot more interesting than the description on the menu leads you to believe. Service was excellent, atmosphere was great, and I can't wait to go back"

  • "I had visited Zaytinya on my own and was waiting for an opportunity to take my wife. Our anniversary was the occasion I chose, and we were not disappointed, in fact, my wife said it was the best food she has every eaten in a restaurant. She also commented on the quick service and the way the food was brought to the table comparing it to the orchestration of a beautiful ballet. This was probably the best restaurant experience we have every enjoyed."

  • "The food is fresh and full of flavor created by an interesting mix of spices. If Mediterranean spices are not your thing, then this tapas restaurant is not for you. The grilled octopus was very tender and mild flavored-the only item we tried that was not distinctly flavored. The service was the worst I've experienced in recent memory. We ordered and did not see a waitperson for 20 minutes at a time thereafter. No one checked to see if we would like to order more tapas plates. Our water glasses would go dry. When it was time to pay, we waited 25 minutes before I got up from my table and went to the host stand and asked for my bill. We were at the restaurant for 1.5 hours for 6 tapas plates and one beer."

  • "The menu is still great after all these years. Old favorites and new additions. Truly nothing like it in the area."
    Dined on 7/21/2014
  • "The food was excellent and the service outstanding. We will have lunch there again soon."
    Dined on 7/21/2014
  • "Four of us started with the cocktails, shared 12 dishes and 2 desserts. We were happy with everything and particularly liked the octopus santorini, seared bay salmon, bronzino, seasonal mushrooms, and water melon salad."

  • "Zaytinya is an amazing restaurant that never disappoints. The cuisine is fresh, delightful, and flavorful. The ambiance and energy is warm and relaxed chic. The floor to ceiling glass windows add a beautiful flair to the restaurant. Zaytinya is one of my two "go to" restaurants in this vibrant section of DC; Jaleo is the other."

  • "I'm moving from DC next week so I had to make one more trip! We were at a large round table against the window and stairs. The table might have been a tad big for a party of 6, but it was better than being squished a table too small."
    Dined on 7/20/2014
  • "I've eaten here several times - in small groups and just as a party of 2. always delish, always attentive service. I had the falafel for the first time after steering clear because falafel can upset my stomach but it wasn't greasy or heavy at all! Other favorites include the shrimp, brussels, and obviously hummus."
    Dined on 7/19/2014
  • "Having eaten at Zaytinya on two previous occasions, I was sorry to see that it has recently suffered from the same complacency as Jaleo -- probably stemming from continued demand from tourists in Chinatown. Lamb chops were a combination of gristle and rubber. Our server was nonexistant. Took three interventions to get a bottle of sparkling water, and half of our food order never arrived. If you know Turkish food, Meze in Adams Morgan is a much better option. For Lebanese, Me Jana in Arlington is worth the drive. No mas, Jose Andres."

  • "Food was great. Service was rushed This was an overall great culinary adventure"

  • "My favorite food in DC. A little loud so don't go there for a romantic date, go there with your family visiting in town, friends, or something like that. The food is amazing and you don't have to feel too guilty about pigging out here either."

  • "Had a great dinner with family. Lana was a great and attentive server. I will definitely be back to bring more of my family."
    Dined on 7/19/2014
  • "We found the food delicious and the service excellent, but it was really difficult to hear one another at our table of five. I suspect that, even had it been two people, it would have been difficult. Aside from offering great food and service, Zaytinya is a great place for people-watching and seems like a hot spot, but not the place if you want meaningful conversation."

  • "I basically found this place on the internet and made reservations a few weeks before we visited Washington D.C. It turned out to be an excellent choice. We probably overdid the small plates by one or so, but everything was superb. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and helpful in guiding us, and the service was timely and attentive without being overbearing. All in all, I thought it was a good value......was expecting a heftier check, but it was reasonable for all we had to eat."

  • "Excellent food! The falafel was amazing!Overall great meal outdoors on the patio."

  • "I am always skeptical when a restaurant gets rave reviews but the food was excellent. We decided to eat outside because it was very noisy and cold inside."
    Dined on 7/19/2014
  • "Our 1st visit to Zaytinya was absolutely amazing and it will certainly not be our last! All of our food choices (especially the salads and whole bronzino) were perfectly prepared and delicious; the service was helpful and attentive; and the opportunity to dine outside made the experience complete."
    Dined on 7/19/2014
  • "Such a great selection of food! The plates are really small, as they're meant to be. My boyfriend and I split 6 plates + tzatziki and it was perfect... SOOO DELICIOUS! And the drink menu is amazing as well!"
    Dined on 7/18/2014
  • "Had to wait 15 mins for our (pre-reserved) table and service was fairly slow (though very pleasant and polite). Hot and cold mezze dishes were all good, though not as outstanding as I expected from this place's reputation. Busy and buzzy atmosphere, but our booth gave us space to be comfortable and chat. Great bottle of Chateau Musar. All this was fine for a casual Friday night catch-up with good friends, and we enjoyed our evening, but not a standout for a special dinner."

  • "After a hard week working with few breaks, dinner at Zaytinya was the perfect reward. The weather was lovely and they have a wonderful patio dining set up. We took the recommendations of our server and were not disappointed. Honestly everything we tried was delicious. The Crispy Brussel Afelia were particularly tasty as was the roasted cauliflower. We tried a traditional Keftedes Kapama and were only disappointed when the plate was bare. Capping it off with two mini desserts - the Chocolate Rose and Turkish Coffee Chocolate Cake - the Chocolate Rose was our collective favorite. Everything was fantastic."

  • "Carefully and creatively composed assembly of flavors bursting from every dish and its sauce. An exciting place to be a vegetarian. Our waiter, Hector, was quick, knowledgeable, and so congenial he brightened us all up with his enthusiasm for the menu items. It's a very satisfying experience (except for the noise)."

  • "The food at Zaytinya is spectacular; it's what keeps me coming back. But the reception at the host stand is atrocious every single time. If we stop by hoping to snag a table, the reception is downright hostile. For this visit (on a weeknight), we had a reservation and still the hostess acted like she was doing us a favor. Whatever happened to a warm greeting? The day will come when Zaytinya is not full every night. Maybe then the managers will train their host staff that even if the food is excellent and the server is great, a nasty welcome at the door will lead to a bad review every time."
