Diner Reviews
  • "Outstanding. A new favorite. I'm not a margarita drinker but I'm now a convert after sampling the blood orange margarita! Thought the lobster quacamole would be for tourists only, but was I wrong. Excellent. Tortillas are home made. Seafood stew was amazing."

  • "Zapoteca seems to specialize in creative, rather than traditional, or tex-mex style Mexican food. Overall, I enjoyed my entree, a huarache, but the selection seemed a little heavy on seafood-oriented entrees, I suppose because it is Maine. The salsa fresca seemed largely comprised of onions. I would probably opt for a different one next time, and there certainly is a large selection from which to choose. The portion size is smaller, but appropriately priced--a refreshing trend in a restaurant. The traditional margarita was outstanding. I would return and try dinner rather than lunch."

  • "Always a pleasure This was our first Zapoteca brunch and we could not have been more pleased."

  • "Fish tacos are among the best we've ever had. All entrees have a freshness and depth of flavor that set Zapoteca apart from and above other Mexican restaurants we've tried, whcih tend to have a "sameness." Sides like the mexican street corn and black bean puree are wonderful and unique. Brunch menu is great, but the lunch menu is also served during brunch."

  • "As always - Zapoteca provides a very unique perspective on Mexican food. Very unusual menu and the drink variety is great!"

  • "Best Mexican food we have found in Maine. Authentic recipes, great service"

  • "Been to Zapoteca twice and both times had a great meal and excellent service. Prices are reasonable for Portland these days and a great value for what you get. The Mejillones Al Tequila (Mussels) are exceptional."

  • "This place is as busy as anywhere from 4:00 on, and it is because they have amazing food, strong cocktails, and one of the best happy hours around. The food is creative - their best salsa is the cashew one - and full of flavor. The only negative is an occassional too much salt in some dishes, but it is rare. The highlights are the cashew salsa and stuffed jalepenos for apps and their filet mingon for dinner is exceptional. The real margaritas that avoid bar mix are also quite impressive. Great place."

  • "Once again, Zapoteca outdid itself. The Carne Asada was the best I have ever had and the service was exquisite. An unbelievable meal for an incredible affordable price. This is NOT the Mexican food that you are used to!!!"

  • "This is NOT your standard Mexican restaurant. It's definitely a foodie nirvana. My favorite dish was the scallop ceviche appetizer; it was mild and delicious with citrus notes. My son particularly enjoyed the lobster ceviche. We all also very much enjoyed the selection of salsas. I've been here for both dinner and lunch and recommend it for either. It can be quite crowded, so reservations are a good idea, even late at night or early in the evening."

  • "We arrived just as they opened at 11:30 and they quickly filled up for Sunday brunch. A special cucumber cilantro gazpacho was still on the board from Saturday so we ordered it and it was magnificent. My husband ordered a watermelon habanero margarita that was as he described "perfect". We each tried egg dishes from the special brunch menu, mine with masa boats and my husband's with carnitas. Both were wonderful! All contained different types of peppers and chilies used expertly throughout our meal sending us on our day feeling spicy!"

  • "Always good food but the menu has changed since the last time I was there and it's not as interesting or Mexican as before. The appetizers look really different and good but we only did the salsa bar, which was still very good. The refried beans were completely tasteless. The chicken enchiladas were good but needed the extra salsa we had left to give it some pizzazz. Margaritas were delicious as always though!"

  • "My wife and I dined here tonight for the first time. It certainly won't be the last. Great food with plenty of attention to the finer details. Very interesting and flavorful cocktails. The best dining experience I have EVER had in Portland. (and I have had MANY excellent meals in Portland). Be sure to ask for Kaitlyn as your wait person. She was great as well."

  • "Portland has so many wonderful restaurants. The drinks at Zapoteca were fabulous. The food was over priced and there is much better cheaper Mexican food elsewhere. I highly recommend Zapoteca for its atmosphere. A great place for drinks and chips and guac but if you are looking for good priced great Mexican food, go elsewhere."

  • "Several large groups and the lack of acoustic damping made the noise level almost painful. We could see the other couples at tables almost scowling due to not being able to talk to each other. Food is fine."

  • "We made a reservation for 6:15 and when we got there the hostess said they were running behind. We waited 15 to 20 mins for our table. The service was very slow to bring our food out. We were there for 2 hrs and 15 mins and most of the time we were waiting for our courses to be brought out. We won't be going back."

  • "Went here while visiting Portland and wish we had one in our hometown. I wanted to try everything on the menu!! The regular guacamole was excellent. We tried the cashew salsa and it was great - especially combined with the guacamole. Salsa was very full flavored and mild-med spice level. My husband and I shared the special which was barbacoa with poblano rice, black beans, avocados and house made corn tortillas. It was all fantastic and just the right amt of food for us both."

  • "Not your average Mexican restaurant! Food goes above and beyond the expected fare with very creative and delicious choices."

  • "My daughter and I had a great meal at Zapoteca. She had the carnitas de Puerto and I had the carne asada. Very flavorful! The trio of salsa we had with tortilla chips complimented my mojito nicely. The staff was attentive. When in Portland I would visit again."

  • "Went there for dinner while my brother was in town. Had heard good reviews from friends. We were sitting at a booth with very straight backs, my brother and his wife were sitting facing the wall. The appetizers were delicious (guacamole and chicken roles). Our main dishes were ok but were not served hot. Concensus was that the good was not spicy enough."

  • "The food is simply amazing time after time. The ONLY issue at this restaurant is the noise level in the dining room. On an energetic Saturday night you can't hear a word people at your table for 4 are saying without screaming at one another. Book your table in the bar if you plan to have a conversation with others in your party."

  • "The interior is very nice, old brick and big windows. Loved that they valet park for free, of course a big tip for the valet person is worth it. Food is nice, fresh and local. The server spilled part of my martini so the drink was a bit smaller than normal, I would have been impressed if she came back with a little more as the martini's are pricy. Great presentation and the flavors of my shrimp and crab dish smiled."

  • "This was my third and last visit to Zapoteca. I enjoyed good food my first two visits, but NOT my third. I brought a friend visiting from PA with me to dine. We ordered the ceviche trio as an appetizer. It was outstanding, remarkable, wonderful. Our favorite of the three was the scallop, but we both loved the lobster and the white fish ceviches as well...if only the rest of the meal stood up to this amazing appetizer quality. Sadly, my friend's entree (lobster tacos) was nothing short of inedible. The texture of the lobster was not only unappetizing, it was nauseating. My halibut was on the dry side (a no-no for a $28 entree). We sent the tacos back; they remade the dish...it was an improvement from the first, but still not good..."

  • "Great atmosphere. Superb service! Best selection of tequila in the state. We each had a flight of tequila and the server was instrumental in helping us choose. It was a wonderful experience to try new things. Owner was present and charming. Certainly can see why this is well rated and requires a repeat performance. Truly a must for Tourists or locals."

  • "We opened the place for lunch but it started hopping within a half hour -- chat and chatter and drinks being shaken with great music as a background. Our food was perfect. Guacamole: the best; Chips: even better! Hungry appetites may want to ask about the size of entrees and/or go with big apps. My four scallops with Green Verde rice was perfectly portioned for me. My friend's enchilada platter was larger and prepared with a light hand which didn't make her feel stuffed. Neither of us cared for dessert but there will be another visit for that treat. Be sure to have the host check you in to get points. I wasn't and had to call the next day to have a fix from the restaurant."

  • "Going early to Zapoteca is a good idea since once the place fills up the noise is crazy. But on an early Tuesday evening it was very pleasant and the bartender and wait staff were great. Mezcal Rita's were delicious, as always, as were the warm salsas that came with chips that seemed a bit less fresh than usual (or maybe the brand has changed?). The mushroom rellenos were disappointing - I really had to hunt through the ingredients to find the mushrooms, and only discovered three small pieces, so there wasn't much of a mushroom taste to the dish. I'd go again, though, since I've had other, better meals on other nights."

  • "The food is wonderful here. On my last trip, the food was a bit overdone but I suspect it was my fault due to a late request for an appetizer. Usually it is cooked to perfection. My last trip was also somewhat marred by lackluster wait service but that was also an anomaly as I have had the same waiter before and been very pleased with his service. Just an off night I'm afraid but we come here often and this is the only time I have been a bit disappointed. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone interested in high quality, upper-end Mexican food."

  • "This was our first time at Zapoteca and it certainly will not be our last. We were looking for a new, interesting place to celebrate our (43rd) anniversary, not too fancy, "snappy cas(ual)", and really good food. Zapoteca fulfilled our requirements and more. We were warmly greeted and shown to our table by Tom, the host and co-owner, who introduced us to Natalie, our delightful server. Natalie oriented us to the menu and took splendid care of us without being intrusive. We were allowed time to enjoy the delicious cocktails and appetizers without being rushed to choose our entrees, which were equally delicious. Absolutely everything about our Zapoteca experience exceeded our wish for a perfect night out."

  • "I have been to Zapoteca on numerous occasions, and they always perform well. Order the lobster guacamole, you will not be disappointing. Their cocktails are one of the highlights for sure, offering dozens of options utilizing fresh fruit in many of their drinks. I would rate this restaurant as an absolute perfect, but the service is a bit on the slow side. We went on a night that was very quiet, and waited quite some time for our meals. That being said, it was entirely worth the wait, and we had our drinks to entertain us and a very attentive server."

  • "Way to expensive for fake Mexican food not worth the money that was spent. Taco Bell would have been a better choice "

  • "I was happy to find Zapoteca as delicious, fresh and satisfying as ever. My biggest regret is that I don't travel through Portland enough to enjoy this restaurant more. Although some menu favorites have changed from last year's menu, the dishes prominently feature locally sourced ingredients and no restaurant does Mexican fusion like Zapoteca. I've eaten at "better" restaurants in Portland and always find that they lack the character, service and value that I find at Zapoteca."

  • "We had an amazing night! The restaurant was very accommodating to our larger group. They even seated us earlier than our reservation when a few of us arrived early. The entire drink menu is A-Mazing! Between all of us ladies we sampled just about every drink, each one with its own unique flavors. Our waitress even got us a preview sample of a new drink that will be hitting the summer menu.... it did not disappoint, very delicious!! The guacamole is the best ever and all of enjoyed our entrees as well. We loved our waitress too! She was very personable and able to offer great recommendations from the menu."

  • "Service was good, food not great. Guacamole ("made to order") and salsa with "fresh" chips - chips may have been fresh earlier that day, and the guacamole was clearly made earlier that evening... the salsa fresca, though flavorful, was way too salty. The margaritas were much too sweet, tasting like sour mix instead of tequila and fresh lime juice (also they all contain Patron Citronage despite several misspellings of it on the drink menu). Carne asada entree was OK, the steak was well seasoned but over-cooked and chewy, and the re-fried beans and rice were TOO salty. Pork enchiladas were pretty good though slightly bland (except for the re-fried beans of course). The actual menu did not reflect the online menu, to my disappointment. "

  • "I met Shannon at Rivertree Arts on Thursday. My daughterJuliette's been raving about you and told us to go because my husband loves Tequila. So, what we found first was parking !! Yay, a happy valet.. Then a lovely young man seated us with Natalie as our waitperson .. So far great people and then the food arrived , fresh, vibrant and visually lovely... We are gardeners and cooks ,so all of this matters .My husband tried several aged tequilas and was very impressed with your collection...also he hates Mexican food ! But he adored your "reconstructed" offerings ... Surprise! He's so picky! It's our new go to place in Portland ...we so appreciated all the caring that went into making this happen."

  • "We ate here for the second time, and the atmosphere was festive, as before. People were smiling, laughing, enjoying themselves. Our food was perfect, and wine was great, served with obvious concern for how we liked it. Our only complaint was that the booth we were in was very tight, almost as though the people on the other side, at some point, may have pushed their seat back, thus tightening in ours. However, nothing detracted from the fun vibe and, for us, a delicious meal and great evening.l"
