  • "Enjoyed Zapoteca with friends, but we had difficulty carrying on a conversation given the noise level in the dining room. Every table seemed to be trying to raise their level of conversation to be heard over the next table. Accordingly, conversing required yelling across to your seat mates until tables started to empty an hour or so after we arrived. The food was very different and good; service could not have been better. Our server was attentive, but not over bearing. She truly made the evening. "

  • "There was a LOT of energy in this place the night I was there…a few 'complications' that were attended to and corrected quickly and gracefully. The food was Great!, the wine suggestions excellent. It was noisy and difficult to hear my dining companion, but after a large group of 8 left, it quieted down. All of that said - the food and the service were outstanding and I will be back. Loved the valet parking service too. "

The service was excellent (quick, charming). It's a little loud and sometimes hard to hear folks at your table- other than that it is a perfect dining experience."

  • "Admittedly I came for a James Beard awarded chef experience, and she was out of the country leaving the place in the hands of 'the boys' whose plate presentations, details and commitment to excellence just weren't there: they even forgot to add ingredients. The drinks came out variable the second time around. Our over-friendly server must have interrupted us 20 times. The building itself is spectacular - a 100yr old beauty with great brick and glass - but the interior looks formulaic, the lighting too high and white - bring on some real art! Kudos to the commitment to using local ingredients - the maine shrimp a nice treat, but drowned in sauce. It just didn't feel special, and none of our party of 6 would probably return."

  • "I love Zapoteca; it's one of my go-to restaurants. Unfortunately, this Thursday night was off. A nice meal, but not the wonderful food and service I expect. Waitress mixed up the margaritas, pouring the habanera watermelon over lime and the ginger over watermelon chunks, and didn't offer to reorder them. Chips and salsa were great and the smoky cashew salsa was amazing. Tamal de puerco and enchiladas de puerco were good, but not to die for. Same for the ribs. And, for the first time ever, my ceviche just wasn't quite right. This is a case of a really good restaurant having a not-so-great night. My guess is something wasn't working well in the kitchen. I'll go again, of course, and fully expect things to be great again."

  • "The menu was exciting and looked interesting, unfortunately, the food was disappointing. The most disappointing aspect was the lack of flavor. The Carne Asada con Salsa Rojo was bland, no flavor, or spice or heat! We also tried the Tres Salsa appetizer, a taste of 3 salsas, again bland & no heat at all. There was one dish I can highly recommend, the Mejillones Al Tequila (mussels),the flavor was wonderful, especially with the shot of Tequila added. However, several of the mussels were bad, which is not acceptable when serving shellfish. The menu looked good, but the actual dishes did not live up to the list of ingredients that were listed in each dish and the flavor expected from the combination of those ingredients."

  • "I had visited Zapoteca when it first opened and did not have the best experience but decided to try it again. I brought 5 colleagues to dine with me and we had an amazing meal. Our waiter was super nice and informative. Everyone really enjoyed themselves. I would definitely recommend this restaurant if you haven't been there yet and would also recommend a second visit if your first was similar to mine. This is a lively, high energy environment and better for groups than a romantic environment."

  • "We have been to this restaurant and have always been pleased with our experience there. Unfortunately this time was different. We made a 8:30pm reservation. We ordered some drinks and appetizers upon first being seated. At 9pm we were told that the kitchen was "packing up" and that it we wanted to order anything further to start thinking about it. The lights which are usually dimmed were turned up while we were dining as if to remind us they would be closing soon. We understand that it was a quiet evening, very few customers and perhaps staying open just for us wasn't worth it. However, we wish the 8:30pm reservation wasn't an option if they are not able to provide a pleasant and relaxed dining experience that time of the evening."

  • "Visited for the first time during restaurant week and ordered off the fixed menu. Good overall. Loved the salsa verde that we ordered with the chips, came warm- what a nice surprise. Drink menu is huge and creative. The short ribs dinner was not my favorite, tasted like a chunk of roast beef, not what I expected or was hoping for. Everything was spicy, really spicy. The chocolate cake was so spicy that two of us could not eat it, thankfully the vanilla gelato cooled us down. I will definitely go back and look forward to ordering off the menu."

  • "The best perk of all is the easy free valet parking! Especially on a blistery cold winter night in Maine! The host was very friendly and got us seated right away (with a reservation). Our server was friendly and on top of things but not bothering us too much. She knew the menu very well and was super with her timing. The food was amazing...very eclectic menu as well. We had the guacamole and toquitos to start, which were delicious! The mole sauce with the toquitos was so yummy! The cocktail menu was expansive with many choices of margaritas as well! We just had the best experience here! We will definitely be back and will recommend this to friends!"

  • "A three course prix-fixe meal for restaurant week and a triple flight of Patron tequilas, what a fabulous experience! We learned of Zapoteca when we were in Portland last year for our annual winter get away. We met some new friends on the Maine Beer Tour who recommended that we give Zapoteca a try on our next visit. It just so happened that we made our visit this year during restaurant week and were able to take advantage of a wonderful three course meal. Everything was delicious. My husband and I are definitely "foodies". He says that Zapoteca served him the best piece of fish he has ever eaten and the traditional house margarita, shaken table side, is spot on. For me, the highlight was the flan with fresh berries; a delightful finish."

  • "My husband and I loved the appetizers and the margaritas; the trio of salsas and the tamal. They were super. The entrees just did not live up to our expectations. He had the chicken enchiladas w mole sauce and I had the crab & shrimp enchiladas. The mole sauce was so so and the sauce with the seafood enchiladas just did not work. The wilted greens that are thrown on each main must go. They add nothing to the dish, especially Mexican."

  • "The three course menu that was served during restaurant week was excellent. I went for an early dinner with a friend and the atmosphere was cozy and it was easy to have a conversation. We split 2 apps and 2 desserts(flan 7 flourless cake) and each had the roasted mushroom dish. The flavors and seasoning of all the food was interesting. The mole sauce was the best I've ever had. The waitress was friendly and amazing the pacing was perfect. Felt satisified but not too full at the end. I've been there before with a large group and they can easily accomodate with a reservation. I enjoyed be able to really focus on the food. The drinks are fun and delicious. I had the mango margarita. Prices make this a special occasion restaurant!"

  • "I love coming to this restaurant the food is usually very good and the service is usually good also. Only a couple of things that I would comment on. The noise level is the most disappointing part of the experience. If you go with more that one more person you have to yell to talk. So groups are hard. We only had 5 people but it is so noisy that you really can only talk to the people near you."

  • "I have no words for the service I've received the two times I have visited Zapoteca and on behalf of a very good friend who visited as well. The food good, waitress was good. I called to make a reservation and the words that actually came out of the man's mouth were, "can't you book it online?" I was speechless for a few seconds, I was in the car and calling, unable to go online. He sighed, said hd on then hung up. If I had not had not had a living social deal I definitely would not have come, and I will never return. I seriously a Didnt know whether to laugh or be angry. Need to work on customer service. Won't come again!!!!"

  • "Went here with two other couples. Had a reservation and there was no wait for our table. Good service, good drinks.Loved the atmosphere, the bar and the layout. Sadly, the food was just OK. Over-salted meals, soggy chips. Very lame portion size for guac app. Desserts were ho-hum. Our party had a great time but would not be a top choice for return."

There service and attention to details (like clearing dirty dishes) was clearly lacking. interior space is LOUD (too loud) - one loud group can and does ruin a good experience. The food was all wonderful but service would have been better from a food truck. Wait staff, albeit friendly, do not do anything but take your orders. Forget about getting dirty dishes taken off your table, or the novelly of clean silverware. Again the food was top notch! No hopefully the owners will make it a restaurant and train their services and support staff to make it a great dining experience."

  • "We arrived in a snowstorm to find the place packed. We found out why. Expert cooking, with flavors that melded beautifully and dishes that were distinctive. This is not standard Mexican fare, but lovely food that happens to use Mexican ingredients and flavor combinations. Do not miss the blood orange Margaritas or the mussels appetizer. Our server was very cheerful and bubbly but she observed us without interrupting at inopportune moments -- the sign of really good training and experience. The decor is upscale Southwest. Noise levels were fairly high but no different from what we have experienced in most restaurants lately. I highly recommend reservations for a Saturday night. It is deservedly popular."

  • "Last year this time, I discovered this great little place so we went back when we were back in Maine this year. Not as good. Overall, its a cute place with an artsy flair but the 'rita's were super sour/limey this time and the food was very salty, unnecessarily so. I thought maybe just me but my husband agreed. Hope to try again and have the same experience I had the first time. Good but has dropped in quality a bit."

  • "My wife and I visit Portland a few times a year and asked a local shopkeeper for a dinner recommendation. She sent us to Zapoteca and we make it a priority to dine there - and you should too. The commitment to food, service, and beverage is outstanding. In terms of specifics, my wife had two different margaritas and a chicken enchilada dish and I had two different red wines and a chicken mole dish. The restaurant's farm-to-table philosophy makes everything excellent. You won't find a better place for delicious food and great service."

  • "There was a price fixed menu. There were multiple courses that were small. Everything was very tasty and well thought out when being prepared. We opted for some Tequila drinks instead of the wine pairings with every course. The only negative that I would say was that some of the wait staff were excessively chatty with us. I understand there is a fine line between friendly service and being overbearing but their staff needs to pick up on some non-verbal cues and back off. I wanted a romantic evening with my wife. I didn't want to hear about our waitress's travel issues to DC.....really! And the restaurant is pretty darn loud so a quiet romantic dinner was kind of difficult when I couldn't hear my wife across the table."
