This was my first time eating at Zapoteca and I was sincerely impressed. Everything we ordered was creative and delicious. I highly recommend the ceviche trio which is absolutely amazing! We also had their steak dish with a mole sauce on top which I loved. Our server was polite, genuine and timed our meal perfectly. I'll definitely be back!

Kind of crowded in the front of the restaurant as the weather has turned cold. You are greeted right as you get inside the door but there is not much room to stand and wait for your table, crowded Bar area as well. That was the only low light of our visit here. Wonderful service, great food and superior drinks. Get to this place, you will not be disappointed.

We have eaten at Zapoteca many times and the food is always great. Unfortunately, this time it was incredibly busy and some of the dishes were not a hot as they could have been when delivered to the table. That said, we will most certainly go back and recommend this great restaurant to our friends.

Receptionist was extremely polite, and our server Chris was friendly and helpful. Food was inventive and well seasoned. Not a Tex-Mex place, and we chose Zapoteca to escape that prevalent type of "Mexican" food. However, the restaurant is far too noisy for serious and engaging conversation among close friends. This may be because of the small space devoted to the main dining area and therein, the closeness of tables to one another.

Unfortunately our brunch food was cold. It tasted great though. When the waitress came by to ask how everything was, we said the food was wonderful, but unfortunately cold. She offered to take the food back to the kitchen, but we had both eaten enough off our plate that it seemed foolish, plus, the flavors were still wonderful. The manager came over a couple of minutes later and told us the entire meal would be "on the house" because our food was cold. We protested but she said that **** (can't remember the chef/ or owner's name) wouldn't have it any other way. We will definitely return when we are in the area- not only because the food is fabulous, but also because the restaurant owned their "challenges" with great customer service.

  • Nice decor and ambiance, but still disappointed
    OpenTable Diner Since 2001
    Dined on 10/28/2014
We were disappointed overall. The food was overpriced for what it was (e.g., $11 for a squash salad that wasn't much more than a small pile of greens with 4 small pieces of squash). Moreover, it took a long time for our entrees to arrive (we ate on a weeknight, restaurant appeared about half full). When the dishes did show, one (pork enchiladas) was way too spicy, even though the waiter had indicated it wouldn't be. We returned the dish and had to wait another long-ish while before a replacement appeared (spice level was fine). The other entree (duck breast) was too bland and dry, and the various components did not pull together to create a coherent dish -- though the meat itself was cooked very nicely. Dessert (two flans) saved the evening. We noted that neither the kitchen nor our waiter offered to make up for both the mishandled entree or the repeated long wait times (e.g., a small discount off our bill). Nice decor, though, and pleasant to have a valet out front. But we won't be coming back.

Food, presentation and service were outstanding - don't think I have ever had a better duck. We were out to celebrate our anniversary and were lucky to have checked out other reviews. Main dining room is large and loud, but for privacy and a more romantic setting, request to be seated in the bar area. No matter where you seat, the food is outstanding! We will be back.

Portland has attracted my restauranteurs and there are great restaurants near this location. The waitress was less than enthusiastic to the point that she only had a limited time to serve the table. It was not an overly busy night (Monday). The chips with the guacamole would be much better if served warm. The marjaritas are excellent and part of the reason one would be attracted to this local. The enchiladas were average at best. Nothing specially prepared in the filing of the Enchiladas De Cangrejo Y Camarones and not worthy of its price. Ambiance is excellent, but the food is very average and there are many better restaurants in the area..Green Elephant, Fore Street, Back Bay Grill, The Front Room or Salvage BBQ. Service sticks here!!!

I was surprised by this restaurant because I had heard it was really good by a lot of my friends. I obviously wasn't expecting (and didn't want) a chain style portion, but for $28 I would think you wouldn't leave hungry. The seafood stew is not really what I would consider a stew and was very plain. It consisted of a very small amount of seafood a thin layer of mildly spicy puree. The Salsa Fresca was pico de gallo - something I could easily make at home. I honestly think I could have made a better meal myself and I'm not a chef by any means. The service was good - I think. I couldn't hear a word she was saying because it was so loud in there. With so many great restaurants in Portland, I highly doubt I will be back.

What a great menu. I had heard it was great food, but often I am skeptical and find that the food isn't as great as advertised. Often too, it is hard to find good spicy food, but this too was a great surprise. I was really looking forward to a "kick". It was fantastic, and very flavorful!!! A variety of authentic with some local options peppered in. We saw a few "foodgasms" going on around us... that says it all! Not only was the food great, and delivered exactly as requested, but our waitress was pleasant and attentive, while not hovering. The drinks came out with panache! It isn't often to see that happen in our small corner of the world. It added that extra fun to the evening. A lively atmosphere with great staff.

I had two of the El Traditional margaritas. They were the best margaritas I have ever had. I had the guacamole which was made to order and came with chips. Also very good. I ordered the pork carnitas which were dry and not worth the 22 price tag. They came with three tortillas and a side of dry black beans. My husband ordered the crab and shrimp enchiladas which were much better so maybe I just ordered the wrong dish. Overall I like the ambiance and the drinks but the food was just so so and very expensive for what you get.

I had been here for lunch before but never for dinner, so was looking forward to trying their entrees. I ordered the chicken with mole sauce and was disappointed - the chicken was overcooked and tough, and the mole sauce nothing special. It was served with a bland rice and beans, a handful of pickled onions and grilled tortillas. My husband, on the other hand, had the duck, and he loved it. For starters, the ceviche was delicious and the chips and guac were good (but nothing special). Cocktails were good, and our server was very pleasant, had a great sense of humor and was attentive.

We've been before and we will go back. But. Service was very slow at the start and exposed problems in seating and communications. With reservations, a must any night at Zapoteca, we were going to get a table in the bar against an interior wall in the staff alley from the kitchen and service. I asked for the dining room, and without any problem from the front desk got it. Then we waited. For very nearly 20 mins while at least three servers sped back and forth from all the surrounding tables. Finally, a very nice waiter said she's ours, and tried very hard to keep up. Generally, it was a hard night for service.

This is one restaurant we will not return to or recommend. I ordered the halibut. it was way over cooked. I didn't complain, but for over 20 dollars maybe I should have. My wife order the tri-tip steak, rare and told the waitress that she didn't want any onions. (She hates onions) Her steak was so overcooked it was burned and sure enough there were onions. She did complain and they made her another dinner. No onions this time but the steak was very well done. I didn't try it but she said this is as tough as shoe leather. She likes hot sauce. She asked the waitress if they had any hot sauce and she brought her a small bowl of habanero paste. Total bill was just over 100 dollars. There are many better options in Portland.

This is my third trip to Zapoteca and after having two questionable experiences prior, this visit was the third strike. While the server was attentive, the execution in the kitchen was subpar. Food came out barely warm and the chicken was dry and tasteless. For Mexican cuisine, no matter how 'chef-driven' you purport to be, this level of quality would be expected by a restaurant like Margarita's but not an establishment whose average entree is $24. In addition, there is no mention of ingredient quality (locally sourced or organic) on the menu, which would substantiate the price-point if indeed true. Overall, definitely not worth another trip back. Especially since there are so many stellar dining options in the Portland area.

Had to return a small bread/appetizer plate that was not clean, Before the mussel appetizer even hit the table it was obvious to all three of us it was bad. It never should have left the kitchen....someone there should have known. We opted not to have another figuring the whole lot was bad. The stuffed jalapeno pepper appetizer was good and entrees we good. Many misspellings in the on-line menus. Maybe attention to detail is lacking throughout.
