Diner Reviews
  • "We had a late evening reservation, and part of the party was late arriving. The staff handled that very well, up to a point. The food that we had was delicious - enchiladas - chicken and pork. The drinks that most had - assorted margaretas seemed to be a hit. The only downside was the staff seemed ready to get out of there. As I said, our res was later, and some of the party were late, they only ended up ordering drinks. We were told the kitchen closed soon, so that aspect was a bit rushed, they had a deadline in place... not something you would expect for an establishment with their reputation...and their prices...drinks seemed on the high end. I would go back,...earlier..."

  • "Though we had a reservation we were seated in the bar at a high top, not the dining experience we were expecting. Our waitress was also the bartender which is a recipe for disaster...and it was. She didn't have the time to devote to both waiting the bar well and waiting tables well and we paid the price. This is obviously a management issue rather than a server issue. Food was slow to come out and getting a drink refilled was difficult, when the food came it was very good but not good enough to overcome the entire experience. I'd probably go elsewhere next time."

  • "Top winners on our visit were the chips and tres (3) salsas to include Salsa Verde, Salsa Roja and a surprising stunner, the Cashew salsa. Then the jalapenos rellenos de queso and finished off with Queso Fundido Con Champinones. Food and atmosphere. Check. Great flavors, the right amount and 1/2 off for happy hour could not be beat. The selection of tequila was why we initially came. To have excellent Mexican food to complement the evening was fantastic. We sipped tequila. We did a flight of tequila which came with fresh made tomatilla sangrita to cleanse the palate in a more traditional way. Nice touch. We had a couple margaritas including a special that night, pineapple and habanero. The spicier the better. Great experience."

  • "I had heard good things about Zapoteca but we were quite disappointed. The hostess highly recommended we stay in the bar since the main dining room was very loud. The drinks were great but both entrees were bland. We most likely won't return."

  • "This is my 3rd time at Zapoteca and it keeps getting better. I was able to bring my father with me this time, he was visiting from out of town. He also considers himself a bit of a foodie. From the tequila to the apps, from the wine to the entrees, nothing disappointed. I especially liked the honesty, advise, and education we received from our server. Her knowledge and attitude made the meal that much better. Whatever the Chef is doing back in the kitchen, please continue on, because your creations are amazing."

  • "My parents were in town and they like Mexican food. From the salsa trio with chips, to the wine selected by the owner, to our entrees, everything was top notch. My father loves ribs and he said the ribs were some of the best he has every had...and he is 83. Halibut and chicken enchiladas were both excellent as well. We sat in the bar area, and the vibe was perfect."

  • "Food great, service great. Recommend! We rated noise level high but if it wasn't for one particular table it would have been moderate rating."

  • "The food is always spectacular and the list of tequila and mezcal is fantastic. Splurge for the lobster taco. it is worth every penny!"

  • "Pros: Service, salsa(s), margaritas (although it's not rocket science to mix fresh fruit/juice with tequila and create something tasty). Cons: Entrees. We had the shrimp/crab enchiladas - which were so very dull. They could have benefited from either a little goat cheese, fresh corn or one of their (by contrast) extremely tasty salsas. C'mon - it's a Mexican restaurant - use some heat. That said, the service was great, the ambiance was far superior to the typically brightly colored fiesta atmosphere of most Mexican restaurants, the salsas are varied and interesting - and, you get a really nice buzz from the Margaritas."

  • "My husband and I were really looking forward to trying this place after seeing it featured on a local TV show. However, we were SO disappointed in our experience. First our margaritas were way too sweet and served "up" in a martini glass rather than on the rocks–very odd. With our drinks we tried the chips and salsa, choosing 3 different salsas to try. Two of the three salsas were served warm like they'd been heated in a microwave and were totally flavorless. Next we tried the ceviche and got what tasted like fish soaked in bitter lime juice and served in stewed tomatoes with no seasoning–inedible. Finally my entree was crab and shrimp enchiladas that I couldn't find an once of crab in, and the tortillas were overcooked and tough."

  • "This was my second time visiting this restaurant. The first time was a little over a year ago and I did not make a reservation, this time I used OpenTable to make a reservation for me and my date but we were sat at a very small table in the corner against the wall, which was fine. The menu features many authentic Mexican dishes and also some which showcase the amazing seafood Maine has to offer. I would definitely recommend a visit. I plan on coming back again so that I can try out the extensive tequila section on their drink menu"

  • "Holly our server was fun and very attentive. We are frequent flyers to zap and brought 2 guests. Food and drinks outstanding. We will be back"

  • "Outstanding. A new favorite. I'm not a margarita drinker but I'm now a convert after sampling the blood orange margarita! Thought the lobster quacamole would be for tourists only, but was I wrong. Excellent. Tortillas are home made. Seafood stew was amazing."

  • "Zapoteca seems to specialize in creative, rather than traditional, or tex-mex style Mexican food. Overall, I enjoyed my entree, a huarache, but the selection seemed a little heavy on seafood-oriented entrees, I suppose because it is Maine. The salsa fresca seemed largely comprised of onions. I would probably opt for a different one next time, and there certainly is a large selection from which to choose. The portion size is smaller, but appropriately priced--a refreshing trend in a restaurant. The traditional margarita was outstanding. I would return and try dinner rather than lunch."

  • "Fish tacos are among the best we've ever had. All entrees have a freshness and depth of flavor that set Zapoteca apart from and above other Mexican restaurants we've tried, whcih tend to have a "sameness." Sides like the mexican street corn and black bean puree are wonderful and unique. Brunch menu is great, but the lunch menu is also served during brunch."

  • "Been to Zapoteca twice and both times had a great meal and excellent service. Prices are reasonable for Portland these days and a great value for what you get. The Mejillones Al Tequila (Mussels) are exceptional."

  • "This place is as busy as anywhere from 4:00 on, and it is because they have amazing food, strong cocktails, and one of the best happy hours around. The food is creative - their best salsa is the cashew one - and full of flavor. The only negative is an occassional too much salt in some dishes, but it is rare. The highlights are the cashew salsa and stuffed jalepenos for apps and their filet mingon for dinner is exceptional. The real margaritas that avoid bar mix are also quite impressive. Great place."

  • "We arrived just as they opened at 11:30 and they quickly filled up for Sunday brunch. A special cucumber cilantro gazpacho was still on the board from Saturday so we ordered it and it was magnificent. My husband ordered a watermelon habanero margarita that was as he described "perfect". We each tried egg dishes from the special brunch menu, mine with masa boats and my husband's with carnitas. Both were wonderful! All contained different types of peppers and chilies used expertly throughout our meal sending us on our day feeling spicy!"

  • "My wife and I dined here tonight for the first time. It certainly won't be the last. Great food with plenty of attention to the finer details. Very interesting and flavorful cocktails. The best dining experience I have EVER had in Portland. (and I have had MANY excellent meals in Portland). Be sure to ask for Kaitlyn as your wait person. She was great as well."

  • "Always good food but the menu has changed since the last time I was there and it's not as interesting or Mexican as before. The appetizers look really different and good but we only did the salsa bar, which was still very good. The refried beans were completely tasteless. The chicken enchiladas were good but needed the extra salsa we had left to give it some pizzazz. Margaritas were delicious as always though!"

  • "Once again, Zapoteca outdid itself. The Carne Asada was the best I have ever had and the service was exquisite. An unbelievable meal for an incredible affordable price. This is NOT the Mexican food that you are used to!!!"

  • "Several large groups and the lack of acoustic damping made the noise level almost painful. We could see the other couples at tables almost scowling due to not being able to talk to each other. Food is fine."

  • "Portland has so many wonderful restaurants. The drinks at Zapoteca were fabulous. The food was over priced and there is much better cheaper Mexican food elsewhere. I highly recommend Zapoteca for its atmosphere. A great place for drinks and chips and guac but if you are looking for good priced great Mexican food, go elsewhere."

  • "We made a reservation for 6:15 and when we got there the hostess said they were running behind. We waited 15 to 20 mins for our table. The service was very slow to bring our food out. We were there for 2 hrs and 15 mins and most of the time we were waiting for our courses to be brought out. We won't be going back."

  • "Went here while visiting Portland and wish we had one in our hometown. I wanted to try everything on the menu!! The regular guacamole was excellent. We tried the cashew salsa and it was great - especially combined with the guacamole. Salsa was very full flavored and mild-med spice level. My husband and I shared the special which was barbacoa with poblano rice, black beans, avocados and house made corn tortillas. It was all fantastic and just the right amt of food for us both."

  • "Went there for dinner while my brother was in town. Had heard good reviews from friends. We were sitting at a booth with very straight backs, my brother and his wife were sitting facing the wall. The appetizers were delicious (guacamole and chicken roles). Our main dishes were ok but were not served hot. Concensus was that the good was not spicy enough."

  • "My daughter and I had a great meal at Zapoteca. She had the carnitas de Puerto and I had the carne asada. Very flavorful! The trio of salsa we had with tortilla chips complimented my mojito nicely. The staff was attentive. When in Portland I would visit again."

  • "The food is simply amazing time after time. The ONLY issue at this restaurant is the noise level in the dining room. On an energetic Saturday night you can't hear a word people at your table for 4 are saying without screaming at one another. Book your table in the bar if you plan to have a conversation with others in your party."

  • "This was my third and last visit to Zapoteca. I enjoyed good food my first two visits, but NOT my third. I brought a friend visiting from PA with me to dine. We ordered the ceviche trio as an appetizer. It was outstanding, remarkable, wonderful. Our favorite of the three was the scallop, but we both loved the lobster and the white fish ceviches as well...if only the rest of the meal stood up to this amazing appetizer quality. Sadly, my friend's entree (lobster tacos) was nothing short of inedible. The texture of the lobster was not only unappetizing, it was nauseating. My halibut was on the dry side (a no-no for a $28 entree). We sent the tacos back; they remade the dish...it was an improvement from the first, but still not good..."

  • "The interior is very nice, old brick and big windows. Loved that they valet park for free, of course a big tip for the valet person is worth it. Food is nice, fresh and local. The server spilled part of my martini so the drink was a bit smaller than normal, I would have been impressed if she came back with a little more as the martini's are pricy. Great presentation and the flavors of my shrimp and crab dish smiled."

  • "Great atmosphere. Superb service! Best selection of tequila in the state. We each had a flight of tequila and the server was instrumental in helping us choose. It was a wonderful experience to try new things. Owner was present and charming. Certainly can see why this is well rated and requires a repeat performance. Truly a must for Tourists or locals."

  • "The food is wonderful here. On my last trip, the food was a bit overdone but I suspect it was my fault due to a late request for an appetizer. Usually it is cooked to perfection. My last trip was also somewhat marred by lackluster wait service but that was also an anomaly as I have had the same waiter before and been very pleased with his service. Just an off night I'm afraid but we come here often and this is the only time I have been a bit disappointed. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone interested in high quality, upper-end Mexican food."

  • "We opened the place for lunch but it started hopping within a half hour -- chat and chatter and drinks being shaken with great music as a background. Our food was perfect. Guacamole: the best; Chips: even better! Hungry appetites may want to ask about the size of entrees and/or go with big apps. My four scallops with Green Verde rice was perfectly portioned for me. My friend's enchilada platter was larger and prepared with a light hand which didn't make her feel stuffed. Neither of us cared for dessert but there will be another visit for that treat. Be sure to have the host check you in to get points. I wasn't and had to call the next day to have a fix from the restaurant."

  • "Going early to Zapoteca is a good idea since once the place fills up the noise is crazy. But on an early Tuesday evening it was very pleasant and the bartender and wait staff were great. Mezcal Rita's were delicious, as always, as were the warm salsas that came with chips that seemed a bit less fresh than usual (or maybe the brand has changed?). The mushroom rellenos were disappointing - I really had to hunt through the ingredients to find the mushrooms, and only discovered three small pieces, so there wasn't much of a mushroom taste to the dish. I'd go again, though, since I've had other, better meals on other nights."
