Made with the passion, heart & soul of Mexico, using the freshest of ingredients, the fare at Zapatista is a blend of regional Mexican dishes that are authentic, yet contemporary. The menu ranges from grilled chicken, pork, steak and seafood entrees with house made moles and salsas to burritos, tacos & enchiladas, plus the guacamole is made table-side just how you like it. The atmosphere
is romantic and rustic with a beautiful stone back bar which holds some of the finest tequilas available; not to mention, the specialty drink list which boasts a variety of unique recipes & a great beer & wine selection. So I had never been here before but had always wanted to go. I finally went and the food was great, vegetarian options seem limited but there are some that are not on the menu so make sure you ask about that! I got charged the incorrect amount for the wine that I ordered, and it was very loud. Other than that I really enjoyed it! I would definitely go back.

Ambience was great. Salsas good. Enchiladas mariscos and carnitas taco were great. Avoid fajitas in a pot which turn out to be more like fondue (though hard to imagine this was too much melted cheese).

Restaurant was busy, but not packed. There appeared to be enough staff, but service was terrible. Didn't get part of my dinner until I was nearly done, never was offered another beverage, and waiter couldn't even bother to pick up the check. Food is good but nothing special and not worth going back with the bad service. Ruined entire dinner experience.

For liters of margaritas and a group of girlfriends, this is a perfect South Loop spot. Went with a group of 6 for a friend's birthday and had a delicious time. They gave us a complimentary dessert that was beautiful (flaming plantains, gorgeous presentation) as a special birthday treat - much appreciated. NOTE: good for groups, but they only take 4 CARDS PER CHECK - so plan ahead if you're planning on splitting the bill.

The food (enchiladas & Paella) were really good. Service wasn't horrendous but not great either. Restaurant on Saturday evening was probably 1/2 full. We were sat next to a group of young and energetic young adults having a birthday party. Waitress was definitely working that table mostly. We were an after-thought. Overall, no romantic ambiance, place was loud, and while "Open-Table" had option for special items to be done (wedding anniversary)....NONE were actually completed. Without being there previously, and using online pictures seen were very misleading on what to expect. 3 stars overall only because the food was awesomely good.

Three of my girlfriends and me went here for dinner Friday night. We started with the queso chorizo appetizer which is messy but good. We ordered a liter of margaritas for the table and were surprised to each get two pourings out of it. The margaritas were strong but didn't taste strong, which is the way I like them. For dinner we all had different entrees. A friend and I had the chile releno which were stuffed with chicken. They were amazingly good. A friend had the seafood enchiladas which had shrimp and tilapia. She said that she never tasted anything like it before and cleaned her plate. My last friend had steak tacos. She liked them but they were messy. Overall we ended up spending $30 a girl with tax and tip can't go wrong.

This was my second visit to Zapatista and unfortunately my guests nor, myself was extremely impressed this time around. The host was very friendly however our waiter was bit lackluster and did not even take time the to make menu suggestions. Also, we had a concern about one of our appetizer portions and that went unaddressed. The waiters lack of concern and rushed attitude was very annoying. My overall experience was fair/somewhat good (the good part would be the food). The restaurant also only had about five to six parties to take care of so, I'm not quite sure what was going on with the quality of the service. I will give Zapatista another shot because again my first experience was very positive. But it won't be any time soon.

First of all we requested a quiet table and were placed at a table for 8 in front next to the front door so it was very noisy. Chips and guacamole were very good and so was the Sangria pitcher. I had the chicken tacos that were very dry and tasteless. Black beans and rice were good. The fish tacos were good. The dessert was good as well!

Menu has been condensed and there are no longer any clear vegetarian options. They made for me what I asked for, but it wasn't as good as in the past. Service this time was good but do not let them seat you in the bar area. Service there is terrible. They were also out of the wine on the list that I ordered and had to substitute. Located by 13th and Wabash, Zapatista shares the street with a host of South Loop restaurants that all contribute to an energetic nightlife. The food was good, though nothing to write home about. Their tequila list is to die for if you're into such things, but they don't have much else in the way of drinks aside from a "full bar" without any sort of drink list or pricing. Even at 7pm it was still pretty empty inside, making it ideal for someone to have a late-night date.

Had a lovely lunch here for 4 people. Great guac, not to be missed. We were a little disappointed that the brunch on their website was no longer available. Update the website!! I ended up with the fajitas which are served boiling hot in a lava bowl. Plenty to take home for my next meal. They even comped up their flaming banana dessert, but we were too full to take more than just a bite.

I'd been to Zapatista once before for a friend's birthday and decided to go there for my own this year. Neither time disappointed. On this occasion my boyfriend and I showed up early (the CTA actually got us there way quicker than I expected, how crazy is that, lol!) and they were able to seat us immediately regardless. Food and drinks came out quickly and the chips and salsa were basically endless. Yum! I ordered the barbacoa enchiladas and he ordered the lamb tacos. It was a great, delicious dinner.

I was hesitant to go to Zapatista last night with all the "terrible service" reviews. I was pleasantly surprised! Made a last minute 6pm reso on Open Table. And we got the last outside table when we arrived!! Woohoo!! Our waiter, (Christian) was awesome and made us feel welcome! Food was decent. My Aunt's chicken fajitas were served in a big hot pot...and stayed hot! Mom loved her steak enchiladas. My steak burrito was luke warm and didn't have much steak, but was large since it had lots of lettuce, tomatoes, etc. Loved the mild sauce it was served with. I will go back...but, I will get the fajitas next time:)

I work a block away from Zapatista and always wanted to try it and finally got the chance this past weekend. The server took 20 minutes to come back to our table after we first got there and it wasn't busy at all. She constantly rolled her eyes and looked mad the whole time. The food came out pretty fast but that's probably because there was no flavor in any of the food. I got the steak tacos and they were more like shredded beef tacos with no seasonings at all. My girlfriend got the cheese enchiladas and those were just as bland. The side of rice and beans was a bit salty but sadly the highlight of our dinner along with the hot salsa. Go to La Cantina a few blocks south from here and you'll get food and drinks that are ten times better.

Our waiter constantly avoided us the entire time we were there. I was having dinner with my 1 year child, husband and best friend. The service we receive was absolutely beyond poor. I have been to Zapatista several times and received better service and food. From the sangria to the unseasoned food, we had to return back several items because it was just bad. We certainly wanted to leave but just suffered through it. At this point, we will not be returning ever.

If spice is your life then the spicy versions of Zapatista's fajitas in a molcajete and their guacamole will get you going. As a foodie I was very impressed with their guacamole which was creamy and chunky at the same time! For the gluten free diner (my wife) almost all the food was safe. Their drinks could use a little work though... Otherwise an outstanding find.

servers, then this is the place for you. Friday night crowd; somewhat busy. The noise level was similar to a jumbo jet. The worst aspect of the ambiance was being bumped by servers about every 30 seconds. Food was lower quality than many taquerias, and two of us ordered the same seafood enchilada dish, yet one had two scallops on top (along with shrimp) and the other didn't?? Moreover, the fish (tilapia I think) was overcooked and chewy. They are chopped from my pocketbook. I would think of this place as a drink/appetizer place only, because those were up to par.

I'm a big believer in second chances, but we've now eaten at two Zapatista locations & they're were consistent. That is, consistently not great. Food quality wasn't that good & the service matched that. I had the braised lamb tacos & my wife had the al pastor, and both were especially fatty. The guacamole appetizer was also a very small portion, and the chips came out greasy and under fried. To top it all off, the bathrooms were filthy. I'm all for upscale casual Mexican food, but at Zapatista, the quality doesn't match the pricing. (Average bill for family of 4, including 20% tip, is around $75.) I'm happy to pay for quality, but neither their Naperville or South Loop location lived up to the pricing. We will not be back.

Needed a place near the Hilton which could take a table of 8 including kids, and would not break the bank. This place served this purpose just fine. Food was nothing unique, but was decent and good value. Plenty of wine, beer and tequila options. Service was prompt and efficient, no problems. It was quite noisy in there though so not easy to hear people at other end of the table. I would go there again if in the South Loop, but would not make a special trip.
