Made with the passion, heart & soul of Mexico, using the freshest of ingredients, the fare at Zapatista is a blend of regional Mexican dishes that are authentic, yet contemporary. The menu ranges from grilled chicken, pork, steak and seafood entrees with house made moles and salsas to burritos, tacos & enchiladas, plus the guacamole is made table-side just how you like it. The atmosphere
is romantic and rustic with a beautiful stone back bar which holds some of the finest tequilas available; not to mention, the specialty drink list which boasts a variety of unique recipes & a great beer & wine selection. The hand painted wood furniture is comfortable, the walls are rich in color and the photographs hung around the restaurant depict the life of a Zapatista. Choose to dine in the dining room, sit in the bar, or enjoy the long days of summer
at a table on the large outdoor sidewalk patio.

Diner Reviews
  • "She has no idea about the menu. The lady never filled our waters. Never checked on us. And took away plates before we were done."

  • "servers, then this is the place for you. Friday night crowd; somewhat busy. The noise level was similar to a jumbo jet. The worst aspect of the ambiance was being bumped by servers about every 30 seconds. Food was lower quality than many taquerias, and two of us ordered the same seafood enchilada dish, yet one had two scallops on top (along with shrimp) and the other didn't?? Moreover, the fish (tilapia I think) was overcooked and chewy. They are chopped from my pocketbook. I would think of this place as a drink/appetizer place only, because those were up to par."

  • "I'm a big believer in second chances, but we've now eaten at two Zapatista locations & they're were consistent. That is, consistently not great. Food quality wasn't that good & the service matched that. I had the braised lamb tacos & my wife had the al pastor, and both were especially fatty. The guacamole appetizer was also a very small portion, and the chips came out greasy and under fried. To top it all off, the bathrooms were filthy. I'm all for upscale casual Mexican food, but at Zapatista, the quality doesn't match the pricing. (Average bill for family of 4, including 20% tip, is around $75.) I'm happy to pay for quality, but neither their Naperville or South Loop location lived up to the pricing. We will not be back."

  • "Needed a place near the Hilton which could take a table of 8 including kids, and would not break the bank. This place served this purpose just fine. Food was nothing unique, but was decent and good value. Plenty of wine, beer and tequila options. Service was prompt and efficient, no problems. It was quite noisy in there though so not easy to hear people at other end of the table. I would go there again if in the South Loop, but would not make a special trip."

  • "This is good food in a casual setting. We were able to walk here from Northerly Island where we were seeing a concert, so the location was great. It's a little pricier than most Mexican restaurants I've been to, but not surprising for the city."

  • "Worst mistake I made was going on a weekday. The place says they close after 10, buy they will rush you out before that and not give you any experience. I will never go back especially the food was pretty much thrown at us in 1 minute after ordering!"
    Dined on 6/26/2014
  • "We had very rude server, was rushing us and did not know what items were available, or on special. She would talk over us, cut us off. Obvious she was anxious to get out of work and didn't care about level of service. Food was not great anyhow. Disappointing because I previously liked this place, particularly their brunch. I do not plan to return."

  • "Place looks great but they should hire some cooks from the hood. I've had better food at a corner stand. Overall, the place is ideal for a hang out spot. Service is great but again...the food."

  • "The restaurant is not particularly wheelchair friendly. Had to ask several tables to scoot their chairs in so I could get out even though I requested a wheelchair accessible table when making the reservation. Service is slow but friendly, drinks are nothing to write home about, food is very good. I much prefer lunch to dinner there. Not as crowded and noisy."

  • "I came here with my boyfriend on a Friday night. The restaurant decor was fun but the food and service were lackluster. We ordered a pitcher of margarita, which was pretty good but the food wasn't great. My boyfriend ordered a fish dish that ended up only tasting like the sauce that it was covered in. I ordered the beer battered fish tacos, which just tasted like fried food covered in the same sauce. Perhaps we just got unlucky with what we ordered, but for the price, I wouldn't go back to try other things. The service was pretty bad too. We had to ask (and wait for a while) for water and an extra silverware. We weren't even given a dessert menu to look at - she just said "anything else?". Wouldn't recommend..."

  • "Food was good, service was good, a bit noisy because it was crowded. Glad we had reservations."

  • " The hostess (first impression) was friendly, smiling, accommodating and great. We sat and ate in the bar so we could watch the Belmont Stakes. We then proceed to interact with another 3 to 4 staff and the overall 'air' of disinterest, avoidance, and poor service takes over. Someone needs to manage these people. They are destroying this business. On the other hand, Zapatista may be the only Mexican restaurant that understands that they can easily niche themselves by offering gluten free choices without making major menu or kitchen changes. I would return to this restaurant in the future with the hope of an overall uptick in the attitude of the staff. Just have that Saturday hostess work with staff and you will do well."

  • "I've been here twice before and dined inside each time. The weather was so nice that we ate outside. The food was delicious and our waiter was kind and patient. The outdoor seating was cramped but still comfortable for the most part. I had the dos tacos special with beans and rice. Delicious. "

  • "We read a lot of wonderful reviews about Zapatista however we felt that the steak fajitas were underseasoned and the calamari had about 3 pieces and the rest was deep fried peppers. It certainly wasn't worth the money spent. The service was okay, they were clearly trying to turn tables quickly because it was a busy night. "
    Dined on 5/31/2014
  • "I would not recommend this restaurant. The restaurant was organized from the host to the server. The food was sub par at best and I feel that the majority of the blame should be put on management. Our reservation was not registered and then our server appeared to have more important things to do then wait on tables. "

  • "Zapatista had always been a favorite but we we're disappointed w the service food and overall experience this time around. Restaurant was not busy but service was unattentative, good was so-so and it took us 20 minutes to get the check only for it to be incorrect. "
    Dined on 5/10/2014
  • "A nice variety including what you expect; tacos, beans and rice. But also more with nice entrées treated with a variety of Mexican spice and preparation. Efficient and friendly wait staff with a "glad this is my neighborhood" feel. "

  • "The service was terrible. They need to work out a few kinks here. We were one of maybe six tables sitting and it took 30 minutes for drinks and 40 minutes for guacamole. The food was good. But a planter fell from the patio cover and nearly dropped on the head of a neighboring diner. The bus boy would come to our table and simply hold out his hand, without saying a word, and expected us to hand him our dirty dishes. I'm all about helping out but this seemed tacky and inappropriate as he expected us to help without actually asking. I can't recommend this place. These problems did not exist here for the years that I had frequented this place between 2008 and 2012. What a shame."

  • "Great Ambience - great service, the food had no flavor. "

  • "The wait or ruined the surprise party I was hosting. There were many mistakes in the food once it was delivered to the table. And thh credit cards were all falsely charged when the bill came. Now I have to go back and call all 12 members in my party to be sure their credit cards were reimbursed. It was a complete disaster even though they were apologetic. I would never recommend this restsurant and nor will I (or my 12 friends) ever return. "

  • "Loved the food and the place is very nice! My entire family enjoyed the food and they would like to return. "

  • "My husband and I went here for our date night. Overall the food was really good. He got the steak tacos which he loved and I got the vegetable enchiladas which were good but not great. The guacomole they served was absolutely fabulous. We'd definitely go back - I'd love to try their brunch menu since it looks outstanding."

  • "I would highly recommend Zapatista. Love the fajitas and drinks! Check out their daily specials. The service is always good."

  • "I had the worst experience at Zapatista. I was charged $49.00 each for two pitchers of margarita. Then my waiter made an error on my bill, he wasn't trained properly on how to apply Groupons. To top things off the manager was very rude and unprofessional."
    Dined on 4/12/2014
  • "Servers bad and food bad will not go back horrible time stay netter Mexican food other places"
    Dined on 4/11/2014
  • "Went with a groupon. It was a little pricey for the food. Don't know if I would go back without another discount. This is based on the price not anything else."
    Dined on 4/5/2014
  • "I'm gluten free and ordered a quesadilla on a corn shell rather than flour. I was provided tacos. I told the waitress about the mistake and she insisted that quesadillas were folded because they were on corn shells. I was hungry, so I went ahead and ate them. But the service could have been better."

  • "Group of six used OpenTable to reserve. That went smoothly. Dining experience was nice. I ordered some tamales; those were not good. They were dry and unpleasant. All other orders were excellent."
    Dined on 3/29/2014
  • "The place looks very nice on the inside, but the service ended up being very poor. The food was also deemed average by all of the diners in my party. I liked the place, but I probably wouldn't go back there. Im actually a Chicago food blogger and was not impressed with my experience."
    Dined on 3/26/2014
  • "The service was great, and our food was delicious. Prices are decent and they do give you quite a bit of food. I recommend the Steak fajitas!"

  • "Zapatista is a good restaurant, fun place, in a nice location. If you are a foodie, or demand authentic food, you will not be a fan. The food is not very authentic, although it tries to pass as "high end" Mexican food. I had the enchiladas, in a mole-like sauce, they were surprisingly excellent, the best meal I have had here. The service was not the best. We got ignored several times. Dinner reservations were at 10:30, we arrived at 10 and were seated immeadiately at the bar. The place was moderately crowded. The bartender making the drinks (not taking the orders) seemed overwhelmed, and drinks took a LONG time to arrive. We never got the guacamole we ordered as an appetizer. We never got a chip refill, nor were we asked for one."
    Dined on 3/14/2014
  • "Our server Erica was awesome. Our appetizer was really good. The salsa was lame and watery. The fajitas were chicken and beef. The meat was cut too large. The chicken was overcooked and the beef was tough and grissley. The atmosphere was good though."
    Dined on 3/14/2014
  • "We used to love Zapatista, but the last few times we have gone we were greatly disappointed. We decided to return and give it one more try, and this visit was MUCH better! We arrived 5 minutes before our reservation and the table was not ready, but since it wasn't they gave us free margaritas at the bar. The service continued to be wonderful throughout the night. Hopefully Zapatista is returning to it's better days again!"

  • "The good: food is excellent-good-fish tacos, fajitas. Margaritas also excellent-The "Mamasita", is great. The bad: If you are a supposed top Mexican restaurant, I would think the first thing you would want to get right is chips and salsa. I'll give the chips a pass....I don't like rock hard chips, I prefer the Uncle Julio's thin style chips. But I realize the hard ones are more authentic. But Zapatista had some of the worst salsa I have ever had in my life. It is oily, runny, no bits of tomato, no flavor. It was actually unbelievable... Waitress said it's all that way. After being told we couldn't have green salsa, decided to pay for some- it was better, not great. Overall the food and drinks are worth it if you don't need salsa and chips."

  • "I used my Groupon Deal and they were excited to accept it. My husband and I each got an entree, shared a liter of Margs and they surprised him with a bday Flan :) overall, great experience for our first time in. We're in the neigborhood, so we'll be back."

  • "The mahi mahi tacos were AMAZING! I went here with a friend from out of town and had heard good things. After dining there I know why. The staff was very nice and answer any questions you have. We went on a day with sangria specials and the sangria was great! I will definiitely keep zapatista in mind for dining later on."
    Dined on 3/5/2014
  • "Zapatista disappointed just like it did the first time....Food has no flavor and unimpressive. Had much better mexican....at TACO BELL."
    Dined on 3/1/2014
  • "We usually dine at uncle Julio's when we want Mexican. However, this place was recommended by a coworker. I'm surprised we've never thought of coming here before. It's so close to home! We had a table that had a direct view to the kitchen which was fun to watch the guacamole girl in action and all the hub bub going on. The wait time for food was near non existent. Our server, Victor, was extremely attentive and was a blue to answer any of our menu questions. We will definitely be coming back!"

  • "Just moved to South Loop and wondering the area, have found Zapatista! It's a wonderful place for mexican food with fresh ingredients! The Sangria was 5.00 the evening we came in and they were amazing as well. So happy to have found this neighborhood gem! Keep on coming back too."

  • "we have been going to zapatista for all you can eat fish tacos on fridays for years. service is always an issue - very slow and frustrating. this time, however, was even worse. they have changed menu items but not changed the name, so read the descriptions carefully. our table of 6 all got served food at the same time except for 1 who had to wait at least 10 minutes for her food to come out. spoke with manager who apologized and comped it but we were all very disappointed already."
