A word from Zapatista – South Loop
Zapatista is an authentic Mexican restaurant in the Near South Loop. Made with the passion, heart & soul of Mexico, using the freshest of ingredients, the fare at Zapatista is a blend of regional Mexican dishes that are authentic, yet contemporary. The menu ranges from grilled chicken, pork, steak and seafood entrees with house made moles and salsas to burritos, tacos & enchiladas, plus the guacamole is made table-side just how you like it. The atmosphere
is romantic and rustic with a beautiful stone back bar which holds some of the finest tequilas available; not to mention, the specialty drink list which boasts a variety of unique recipes & a great beer & wine selection. The hand painted wood furniture is comfortable, the walls are rich in color and the photographs hung around the restaurant depict the life of a Zapatista. Choose to dine in the dining room, sit in the bar, or enjoy the long days of summer
at a table on the large outdoor sidewalk patio.

  • "Servers bad and food bad will not go back horrible time stay netter Mexican food other places"

  • "Went with a groupon. It was a little pricey for the food. Don't know if I would go back without another discount. This is based on the price not anything else."

  • "I'm gluten free and ordered a quesadilla on a corn shell rather than flour. I was provided tacos. I told the waitress about the mistake and she insisted that quesadillas were folded because they were on corn shells. I was hungry, so I went ahead and ate them. But the service could have been better."

  • "Group of six used OpenTable to reserve. That went smoothly. Dining experience was nice. I ordered some tamales; those were not good. They were dry and unpleasant. All other orders were excellent."

  • "The place looks very nice on the inside, but the service ended up being very poor. The food was also deemed average by all of the diners in my party. I liked the place, but I probably wouldn't go back there. Im actually a Chicago food blogger and was not impressed with my experience."

  • "The mahi mahi tacos were AMAZING! I went here with a friend from out of town and had heard good things. After dining there I know why. The staff was very nice and answer any questions you have. We went on a day with sangria specials and the sangria was great! I will definiitely keep zapatista in mind for dining later on."

  • "The service was great, and our food was delicious. Prices are decent and they do give you quite a bit of food. I recommend the Steak fajitas!"
    Dined on 3/15/2014
  • "Our server Erica was awesome. Our appetizer was really good. The salsa was lame and watery. The fajitas were chicken and beef. The meat was cut too large. The chicken was overcooked and the beef was tough and grissley. The atmosphere was good though."

  • "Zapatista is a good restaurant, fun place, in a nice location. If you are a foodie, or demand authentic food, you will not be a fan. The food is not very authentic, although it tries to pass as "high end" Mexican food. I had the enchiladas, in a mole-like sauce, they were surprisingly excellent, the best meal I have had here. The service was not the best. We got ignored several times. Dinner reservations were at 10:30, we arrived at 10 and were seated immeadiately at the bar. The place was moderately crowded. The bartender making the drinks (not taking the orders) seemed overwhelmed, and drinks took a LONG time to arrive. We never got the guacamole we ordered as an appetizer. We never got a chip refill, nor were we asked for one."

  • "We used to love Zapatista, but the last few times we have gone we were greatly disappointed. We decided to return and give it one more try, and this visit was MUCH better! We arrived 5 minutes before our reservation and the table was not ready, but since it wasn't they gave us free margaritas at the bar. The service continued to be wonderful throughout the night. Hopefully Zapatista is returning to it's better days again!"

  • "The good: food is excellent-good-fish tacos, fajitas. Margaritas also excellent-The "Mamasita", is great. The bad: If you are a supposed top Mexican restaurant, I would think the first thing you would want to get right is chips and salsa. I'll give the chips a pass....I don't like rock hard chips, I prefer the Uncle Julio's thin style chips. But I realize the hard ones are more authentic. But Zapatista had some of the worst salsa I have ever had in my life. It is oily, runny, no bits of tomato, no flavor. It was actually unbelievable... Waitress said it's all that way. After being told we couldn't have green salsa, decided to pay for some- it was better, not great. Overall the food and drinks are worth it if you don't need salsa and chips."

  • "Zapatista disappointed just like it did the first time....Food has no flavor and unimpressive. Had much better mexican....at TACO BELL."

  • "I used my Groupon Deal and they were excited to accept it. My husband and I each got an entree, shared a liter of Margs and they surprised him with a bday Flan :) overall, great experience for our first time in. We're in the neigborhood, so we'll be back."

  • "Just moved to South Loop and wondering the area, have found Zapatista! It's a wonderful place for mexican food with fresh ingredients! The Sangria was 5.00 the evening we came in and they were amazing as well. So happy to have found this neighborhood gem! Keep on coming back too."

  • "We usually dine at uncle Julio's when we want Mexican. However, this place was recommended by a coworker. I'm surprised we've never thought of coming here before. It's so close to home! We had a table that had a direct view to the kitchen which was fun to watch the guacamole girl in action and all the hub bub going on. The wait time for food was near non existent. Our server, Victor, was extremely attentive and was a blue to answer any of our menu questions. We will definitely be coming back!"

  • "we have been going to zapatista for all you can eat fish tacos on fridays for years. service is always an issue - very slow and frustrating. this time, however, was even worse. they have changed menu items but not changed the name, so read the descriptions carefully. our table of 6 all got served food at the same time except for 1 who had to wait at least 10 minutes for her food to come out. spoke with manager who apologized and comped it but we were all very disappointed already."

  • "Solid service. Good food options, something for everyone menu. Ceviche could use a extra kick of lime. My GF had a bloody, albeit very generous on the vodka pour , needed a little extra spice, and again lime. My tacos Cordero were excellent. Would go back. Seems like a fun spot with a group."

  • "It wasn't our best experience. We were seated against the window, and it made it hard to enjoy because it was so cold & drafty. The guacamole was delicious. I had the chili rellano dinner & it was too hot to even eat. I only ate a quarter of it & the waiter never even asked if there was something wrong with it or anything. My husband had a steak dinner & the meat was almost burnt so bad on the outside & the meat was very chewy. It wasn't the best anniversary dinner."

  • "I had been here once a few years ago and remembered liking it so I brought my parents this past weekend. Our server was fantastic and the service was quick - the food came and 2/3 meals weren't even luke warm. We sent them back and one meal was much better but the other was still tepid. I was really disappointed and a bit disturbed by what they could have been doing wrong in the kitchen and despite the server being great I won't be going back."
    Dined on 1/24/2014
  • "Our server was not very attentive. He never came to give water refills nor did he check on us after our food arrived. I have been here several times previously and never had this issue."
    Dined on 1/18/2014
  • "I have dined here on many occasions. I have never had a bad food experience or bad service. They have a great menu and a special brunch menu for Sundays which is great. The only down side is that it is very loud, they always have music playing. There were 4 of us and we could barely hear our own conversation. It probably had to do with the large group we were sitting next to and the fact that they all looked like they had been drinking for quite a while. I will definitely be back for the food and service."

  • "Turned from a fun Mexican restaurant to a noisy sports bar. Not exactly what I expected but good was great."

  • "I very rarely go out to eat anymore but Mexican is one thing I don't really cook so I enjoy it out. I'd been told good things about Zapatista though not this location so I thought I'd give it a try. We had to direct them twice to different seats as the first was right by the door (the restaurant was barely half full) then by the kitchen; finally we sat at a tiny table better suited for apps and drinks but I was tired of asking. Every refill of water required flagging down random servers; our entree was served mid-appetizer leaving us with no room to comfortably eat until we once again had to flag down a server to clear the plates. The portions for the fajitas for two were tiny and the accompanying sides lackluster. We will not be back."

  • "Tasty treats abound at this South Loop spot. Order a limonada for an adult beverage sure to please. The fajitas served in a molcajete is a win win for the table. Oh don't forget to order the ceviche to start. Service was wonderful. Adriana a is a gem. Her recommendations were perfect. Great night. Will return soon."

  • "Always a top Mexican option - a bit off the beaten path, so typically a bit easier to get a table and well worth the few extra minutes to get there!"
    Dined on 10/24/2013
  • "So we enjoyed the 1893 World's Fair and the Bioluminescence at the Field Museum then headed over to Zap! A good choice-street parking nearby, respectable house Margherita, regional Mexican dishes, solid dessert selection. Prices reasonable - especially this close to the loop."
    Dined on 11/25/2013
  • "I have dined here several times and have never been disappointed. The food and service are always stellar. I brought someone with me and it was their first experience there. They really enjoyed it. We shared the Fajitas for two and had steak and chicken. His only critique was that the steak could have been cut a little smaller and seasoned a little more, but he would definitely come back. I look forward to dining there again."

  • "I live near the restaurant, and I have been to Zapatista many, many times. Probably 15-20 times. I bring my mother there almost every time she comes to town. I used to think of it as a reliable latin restaurant with great margaritas. I have also enjoyed many meals there on my own, sitting in the bar. I have never experienced the poor service and food that my girlfriend and I had that night. I think our waiter forgot us. We did not see him very much at all that night. We needed to ask another waiter for silverware, and it was another server who brought our meals to the table. I ended up being in the weird position of wanting another margarita but not getting the chance to order one. Our food was also beneath expectations."

  • "The shrimp fajitas were delicious. Rice beans and guacamole were pretty standard, nothing spectacular. Chips were all bits and pieces. Service was not great. Waiter hardly checked on us. Fun atmosphere for a Thursday night dinner. Died down by 8pm."
    Dined on 11/14/2013
  • "We went on a weeknight. They only had 3 servers, 1 bartender, and 1 busboy. They were packed. Despite lack of adequate staffing service was very good and food super. Good but not great margaritas. If i lived here would become one of my favorites!"
    Dined on 11/14/2013
  • "we were looking forward to a great evening of good food and great company. unfortunately only one of those held up and it wasn't the food. my chicken tortilla Soup was pulled pork. not a shred of chicken in it. my friends fish tacos had no fish. there was more batter on it than at a baseball game. and last they overcharged me for the cocktail special. Seated next to five women clearly having a better time than us because we were deaf afterward. if you want a meal out of guacamole and salsa...this is your place!"
    Dined on 11/13/2013
  • "We went for a quick gathering for drinks and appetizers after a meeting. A very convenient location where we enjoyed some very good margaritas. The guacamole was superb and we sampled a number of home made tamales that were to die for. The service was great and can't wait to return."
    Dined on 11/4/2013
  • "Menu has changed slightly but food still tasty. Drinks weren't that good. Service was ok. Didn't come back to check on patrons (us) much. Although, some might prefer that... If you signaled them they did come and were polite though. Prices are affordable so that's a plus as well."
    Dined on 10/26/2013
  • "I bought a Travel Zoo voucher and was expected to tip on the full price of the meal. The waitress was very unprofessional, did not check on us and in some cases just outright rude> I believe we did not get the same respect or treatment because a voucher was presented and this should not be the case."

  • "Night before the marathon and six of us grabbed dinner and food was good though mine could have been much hotter when served and another person said same thing. I sent mine back to be warmed. It was fine then. I ordered a drink as did the others and that came right away but I had to ask twice for my water to be refilled during the evening."

  • "Food is middle of the road, service is fine and no real plus or minus about Zapatistas. With so many really good Mexican restaurants all over the city, Zpatistas is just ok."
    Dined on 10/12/2013
  • "We went on the day of a bears game. Food was great but service terrible. I would like to go back when it wasn't so crowded."
    Dined on 10/10/2013
  • "This is the perfect spot for a weekly lunch. The lunch specials were reasonably priced at $9-$10, and came quickly. There is nice music in the background but at a great volume for conversation. Overall, a wonderful gem close enough to downtown but not right in it."
    Dined on 9/27/2013
  • "The food was ok. The service was ok. We were rushed through the meal. We got our apps and the meal came literally two minutes later. We won't be going back."
