Diner Reviews
  • "This was our 2nd visit to Zapatista and although it was a fun evening, the food really didn't match up with our first encounter. It started out pretty well with an outstanding guacomole but the entree's, primarily tacos (lamb and pork) we're fairly bland and a little on the dry side. On the upside, the black beans and rice were outstanding. Right up there with the best I've ever had."

  • "I have been to other Zapatista locations before, and this one just did not meet the expectations I had in my head. It was excessively noisy and our server was not very attentive. I mildly enjoyed my entree while the rest of my family were barely satisfied with the flavor. My margarita was extremely watered down. I would not go back to this location."

  • "We had dinner here after seeing a musical at the Paramount in Aurora. Its a very busy place so reservations on the weekend are a must. Good service, lots of good food. Awesome guacamole - we ordered a second order it was so good. Great margaritas too. I definitely would recommend this restaurant."

  • "This is my second visit to Zapatista. Overall the experience is fair enough. There were a ton of little kids there this time which is fine but I hadn't planned on a family dining experience. I'm rating the fair because the food was okay. The guac was ordered as spicy and it was super plain. The steak enchiladas lacked any sort of spicy flavor and the chocolate torte wasn't very good. My last visit (closer to the opening of this restaurant) had great food but poor service. The service has improved but the food was not as good which was disappointing given the prices."

  • "Burritos were great! Service was very attentive. Looks like a nice outdoor patio. Our group enjoyed themselves very much."

  • "Randomly found this restaurant and it was delicious! The service was great. Loved the fresh made to order guacamole. Impressed and will return!"

  • "It sounded like a lively party when we walked in, but was disappointing after that. Our server was friendly but not very attentive. The water we requested came just before the bill. The guacamole was way too salty. The tortilla of my vegetable enchilada was tough and leathery, but was softer and good the next day as leftovers. I found the Margaritas expensive and opted for beer instead, but my companion enjoyed his Mojitos. Dinner for two, including three drinks, was $66 before tip. That's too much considering only one meal had meat."

  • "even though we had a reservation, the table for six was not ready. we had the earliest time slot available. the table itself was wedged in and we had very little space to relax our posture. there was planty of space for it to have been made more comfortable. the food selection appears to come from strictly premade components. tot eh ppoint that very little if any actual cooking is done to to food before it is served. it seems to have taken a page from the Chipotle model. the food itself was not that tasty. the noise level was terribly loud. we had gone to the restaurant in Chicago a couple of years ago and were pleased by that experince hence the reutrn. this was a disapointment and there will not be a return trip."

  • "I visited this restaurant for the first time and was immediately impressed by the ambience and decor. The kitchen is completely open and can be seen from the dining room. It's a cool idea, but the hum of the kitchen noise and bright fluorescent lighting detract from the more mellow, rustic vibe in the dining room. We ordered an appetizer and 2 entrees, which arrived hot and well-presented. The food was decent, but it wasn't as good as I was hoping and was a bit pricy, all things considered. Overall, even though the food wasn't great, the cocktails and service were fantastic, and they allowed us to use a coupon on a Friday night, which is almost unheard of. I would probably try it again, maybe just for drinks next time."

  • "Overall...Good! My food was good but a couple of the folks that had the steak Fajita's found the meat tough!"

  • "We went here for dinner to celebrate a birthday. The atmosphere and the food were perfect for the event. The manager was incredibly nice and even stopped by to talk to me about my 1.5 son who was with us, which I thought was very friendly. The only negative I would have is that it was fairly loud in there and after dinner, all of us were a little hoarse from having to speak so loud, but that was to be expected considering it was a Saturday night. It definitely didn't take away from the experience at all. Oh, and the fake mustaches they had at the front for everyone were a fun prop to take photos with. I thought it was a unique touch."

  • "I have been to the Zapatista Restaurant in Naperville many times. The food is superb and the service is outstanding every time that we have visited for lunch or dinner. We have brought family and friends, and all agree that Zapatista is absolutely the best Mexican restaurant. On our last visit Friday evening, I ordered the shrimp tacos since it is Lent. They were so delicious, and I would definitely order them again. My favorite dish is the steak enchiladas. The portions are very generous and the sauce is to die for. The ambiance is very comfortable and inviting. With weather permitting, we enjoy to dine on the patio during the summer months."

  • "We ordered carne asada fajitas (fantastic - way more than 1 person can eat), tacos alambres (yummy) & 2 orders of kids chicken fajitas (both orders were COLD... like from the refrigerator, let it sit out for a moment then passed onto the kids cold). The adult meals were excellent though. We didn't realize the kids' dishes were cold until they didn't eat any of the chicken & we decided to box it up. Well who would want cold chicken fajitas?!? The sides with all of the dishes were beans & rice, which were fine. Aside from that it was a place we'd try again. (The cold kids food is the reason we didn't give this place 5 stars.) Highly recommend the asada - very good cuts of meat & delicious flavors."

  • "The food here is wonderful! I just wish the service was on par with the food. Once we were sat, we waited quite a while before we were even greeted. Our server seemed overwhelmed by the amount of tables he was handling. Once we got waters, he dropped off some chips at the same time. However, the salsa took another 5 minutes to make it to us. Our appetizer took an unusually long amount of time as well. When it arrived, the barbacoa was strangely cool. Our fajitas arrived soon after and were absolutely delicious. I just wish the service here was better."

  • "It took quite awhile to be welcomed and offered water once we sat down and then again a long time to get them to take our order. The food was really good. The bar drinks were fantastic. Just feel like our server was juggling far too many tables"

  • "This was my second time trying Zapatista, and after this experience, I will not be back. The service was terrible. The food is NOT WORTH THE PRICE. I ordered steak tacos and it came out with bits of dried steak, onion and cilantro. There was nothing more to it and I had to ask for sour cream to give it some extra flavor. We ordered guacamole for the table (there were 6 of us) and it barely fed all the guests. It had no flavor and no spice to it. Don't waste your time. There are better restaurants in that area."

  • "I was very excited to try Zapatista....went with a friend. Million dollar margarita was large, but nothing special. We ordered made-to-order guacamole and it didn't come. We pointed it out to our server, who clearly had too many tables. He submitted the order again, but when it came it was not spicy at all (hence defeating the made-to-order claim.) They serve bar drinks in the same glasses as the water, so bus boys kept trying to fill my friend's drink with water. Also, she had to send back her second drink...not sure what it was, but it was not the vodka sprite and lime she had ordered. All in all, just OK experience."

  • "This was a first time experience and despite the mixed reviews, wanted to try something new. Unfortunately, the prior negative reviews were validated. Service was very slow, food was mediocre at best - although the appetizers were good - and the bar was ill-equipped. Ten minutes after our drink orders, we were told they no longer made my daughter's selection and then returned again later to inform us they could not make her second selection beacuse they had run out of Malibu rum."

  • "The restaurant was too noisy - they need tapestries or something to lessen the din of everyone talking."

  • "We had a special dinner with 9 people there and they were very accommodating. The food was good but the menu was a little limited. The guacamole was awesome. I was surprised that they had not added gratuity to the bill though, since it said on the menu that parties of 8 or more or maybe it said even 6 or more would have gratuity added in. When you are hosting an event, its a little awkward to start doing math when the bill arrives, I was hoping it would be in there. Other than that, it was fun--and the free mustaches were a fun, albeit creepy, touch."

  • "We had another fine dinner with authentic entrees. Great fajitas pastor, lamb shank, lamb chop, chile relleno and tiger shrimp. While the food was excellent, the wait staff as well as the hostess need to be more efficient to make dining perfect."

  • "We went with our young children and enjoyed our food and especially the service!! Our server, Michael, was especially great with our kids making recommendations that our normally picky eaters loved. He was attentive, knowledgeable while remaining very professional!. This was our first time there for dinner and we will definitely return."

  • "Waitress never introduced herself, was in any way friendly, or showed any enthusiasm for her job. And since the food was only fairl I would not make this a repeat restaurant."

  • "Of the four people in the party two were happy with the food, one said it was Ok and the last was very dissatisfied. Also the service was horrible, the server seemed disinterested and you were more of a bother to them. Also asked what beers they had and they named three when I could cleat see more taps. I had to keep asking what other beers they had."

  • "This was our first time here. It was difficult to have a conversation with our party of 6 as it was quite loud but the food was delicious. Service was just okay...we had to ask for water to be filled and ask for more chips and salsa. When we finished our meal the server never came back to see if we needed more water or drink refills. Just left us there and ignored us. Overall happy with visit and would recommend to others."

  • "The lamb tacos did not have much flavor, and the lamb itself was hard to chew. The breading on the chiles rellenos was very thick and unlike the typical chiles rellenos you would get elsewhere. The appetizer was the best part - we got the tamales."

  • "We were absolutely delighted with our entrees, which were as fine as any we have eaten in superb restaurants in Mexico. My husband began with a terrific salad of shrimp and goat over fine greens and flavored walnuts and then had a combination plate of lamb shank and lamb chop, and I had a chicken breast stuffed with spinach and chorizo; both of our entrees offered large portions. The Ultimate Margarita was exquisite. And, the service was perfect. No sooner had my husband competed his salad that our entrees arrived. This is now our new favorite restaurant."

  • "We come here at least 2-3 times a month and this time we had reservations, waited, and then sat down and waited another 15 minutes before we had to inform a manager that we haven't seen anyone. After that the manager became our server and we were happy with our great food minus a mixup on a sauce and had to return on of the meals and wait but it was worth the wait."

  • "The food and service was just ok. Went with a party of six.. Two people steak was over cooked and was chewy a third person fish taco was not fully cooked properly. However, the steak tacos were good and the mash potatoes were good as well!"

  • "This place was very loud, with a lot of conversations going on & music blaring. The hostess suggested we might want a table by the bar because it was so loud in dining room. We decided to wait for our table & have a drink at the bar. Both bartenders walked by us at multiple times without acknowledging us. We had to ask the hostess to please have someone take our drink order. They boast of the made-to-order guac & we decided to try it. We were disappointed when the bowl contained the equivalent of a single Haas avocado to serve 4. Not worth the $8.99 cost. The rest of our meal was OK. In general, while the flavor profiles were OK to good, everything seemed to be slightly on the salty side. We may revisit, but our expectations will be lower."

  • "I LOVE the food and the friendly weight staff, but even after a couple years of being open, the restaurant feels like its still in the "we just opened mode so please forgive us for all the stuff that's still not quite working right tonight: oh, sorry for the lack of servers (waitress is also the bartender), dirty/chipped glassware, bartenders who aren't sure how to make their signature drinks, confusion over which guac is spicy or mild" etc. What's consistent is that Its just not a consistent experience - that's typically a management issue - i don't blame the servers they are all working hard and trying. They are all friendly and perfectly willing to remake the million$ margarita on the rocks the right way if you ask them to."

  • "After reading the reviews, I was a little skeptical but it was a good experience for our family. We were a party of 4 that night and our youngest is 8. Loved the freshly prepared guacamole that can be customized to your tastes. My husband and I ordered the steak and chicken Fajitas for two and it was a ton of food. Our kids liked that they could get spicy fries instead of rice. My son enjoyed the Carne Asada Tacos - 3 was the perfect amount for son. The waitress was very accommodating and even brought ice cream to my son even though he did not order a kids meal. My husband raved about how good the Coke was and that they kept the refills coming."

  • "Meet another couple there on a Friday. Three of us ordered the special l,fish tacos, which the server said were outstanding. What we got was a fish fry with tangy slaw. for a fish fry it was only ok but it was not a fish taco. The other person had a enchilada that was late coming(` the chef didn `t like how it came out and redid it') and said it was nothing special . Our waitress was a little dizzy acted like she was new to being a waitperson,,she would take some empty plates and not others food servers keep stopping at our table(she must of had her own table numbers she didn`t share with the rest of the staff.) For 125 plus tip (5 drinks total) it was a disappointment and will find a different place to go next time."
