Chef Edgar always delights from the kitchen. Since I've ordered everything on the menu, I now typically lean toward the special because it's always delicious, unexpected, and something I wouldn't (or couldn't) cook at home. Dawn and Christina in the front of the house are superb: efficient and concerned about the food and service. I couldn't ask for better in a restaurant.

  • mother's day disappointment

First timers here and made mother's day reservations. Asked to be seated outside - couldn't accommodate even though a table was just leaving. 55 minutes later we had our food. I ordered chorizo con huevos and was EXTREMELY disappointed w/the lack of chorizo; literally, a table spoon and half was sprinkled across a few diced potatoes, corn and poblano strips. it wasn't bad just VERY little chorizo. My wife's chorizo-stuffed avocado was good, but the black beans and rice it was served was btwn cold and room temperature. Very disappointing. The slow service is really what turned me off. To be a contender for good mexican food in Austin, you need to nail your service and deliver a good product. Managers should visit tacodeli for good service.

Went with a group of five and tried/shared various items: queso fundido, shrimp diablo, carnitas, lobster tacos, pork belly. All were very very good! One of our party ordered a chicken dish recommended by the server, and it was dry! He couldn't finish it. We tried the flan and bread pudding for dessert and they were just 'meh'. They need to edit the menu a bit - why have mediocre dishes along with truly great dishes? It became so hot in the restaurant about midway through the meal that some of our party wanted to leave before dessert! Fix the A/C please and we will come back for more lobster tacos.

  • First time, a Tuesday evening.
    OpenTable Diner Since 2010

First time, a Tuesday evening. Tried one each of $3 lobster tacos & frozen mojitos - both ok/good. Crabmeat tostadas were a bit ordinary, but all our entrees were excellent, including the mole verde, enchiladas, and veracruzano. Our other drinks - their special Old Fashioned & a hibiscus basil martini - were also great. One problem - the talented folkloric band playing were simply too loud for the space. We had to shout over the volume and all other diners were outside rather than in. The music drove us to finish quickly so we could find another place for dessert and drinks where we could hear ourselves talk. The sound of heels stomping on the wooden dance platform, reverberating off the concrete floor was almost painful.

I had high expectations for Zandunga, especially based on the prices they charge. The food and ambiance were OK but not worth the cost. I will look for alternatives to Zandunga when I think about east side Mexican restaurants.

A no-frills restaurant with excellent food in the upper level of price range and quality. Loved the frozen guava margaritas and lobster tacos. And the free chips and salsa were ridiculously good, we couldn't stop eating it. They were very accommodating to our large group (we had a reservation for 10), especially considering it was during SXSW. I would definitely go back here during SXSW next year.

The Prix Fixe dinner was extremely over-priced and not all that good. The three courses seems to originate with the idea that lots of disparate ingredients will make for and interesting meal. Instead it just seemed like it was thrown together... I'll eat there again, because I know their regular menu options are good (although too expensive for what they are).

It was my first visit and the experience was great. It is Mexican food with a very pleasant twist. The Basil infused Margarita is worth trying - sounds odd, but tastes great! The food has excellent flavors that are unique. The menu is interesting and offers options for those who like spice as well as for those who like it mild. We will go back!

We had been in Austin a few times with friends and knowing what the hot restaurants are is quite hard to figure out without knowing where to look. When we started looking for a place for a nice after-game dinner this past Saturday, I immediately was interested in Zandunga. From the moment we arrived, I knew that I hit the jackpot. Everybody got different dishes (the pork chop, the chile rellenos, braised beef tips and the carnitas) and everybody tasted everything on the table. The whole table agreed that they would have been happy with any of the dishes - a rare occurrence with any group. Will be going back the next time in Austin.

This neighborhood gem has been on my radar for over six months because my first look at the online menu suggested that my penchant for distinctive and authentic tastes might be indulged here. I was not disappointed! My dining companion was so impressed by the margaritas that she has already scheduled a return visit for a special occasion.

We went here for a birthday dinner. It was the first visit for everyone in our party. The salsa was amazing as was the mango margarita. Some enjoyed the frozen mojitos. But overall the food seemed to be lacking. For $20 entree,we expected more. Unfortunately, I don't think any of us left thinking we would be back.

  • One of the Top Mexican Restaurants
    OpenTable Diner Since 2011

This was my first time at Zandunga, as well as for the rest of my pary of 8. The place exceeded my expectations. This is not the classic Mexican or TexMex restaurant and food. The place and flavors are way more refined than the vast majority of Mexican places in Austin. The Huarache con Chorizo is awesome, as well as the Guacamole and the Chile Relleno. It is a bit on the expensive side, but I found it reasonable taking into account the quality of the food and service. In my opinion, this is one of the top 3 Mexican restaurants in Austin; I am originally from Mexico City, and have had the opportunity of visiting (High-Class) Mexican restaurants around the globe -I guess, my opinion is somewhat educated.

Zandunga has a small menu but each item we have tried has been outstanding. We have eaten there at lunch and dinner and found the service and food to be excellent at either meal. The sauces are different (for Austin) and very tasty. Some are on the high end of the spicy hot scale, but the waitstaff always seems to point that out and make other recommendations if you are not into the spice. (I do recommend the spicy versions.) We have not been as impressed with the cocktails, however. They are perhaps trying a little too hard to be innovative with the result being drinks that are just a little too cute - too much rose water, grapefruit muddled in an Old Fashion, etc. (Or, maybe or tastes are just a little old fashioned.)

My wife and I chose Zandunga for our anniversary brunch on the merit of the menu we saw through OpenTable. We had several family members in town and they easily accommodated our group of 12. The waiter we had was very attentive and professional. The brunch was amazing! Many of the group had the sopes (shown on their website for brunch) and everyone enjoyed the meal, ambiance, and libations. Our group was a bit loud and jovial, so we may have disturbed other, smaller groups (and I honestly hope they don't complain about that), but I can see that the room could get loud. I will definitely recommend this restaurant to friends (I have already), especially for the brunch. I look forward to trying their lunches and dinners as well.

I invited a group of friends out to celebrate mine and my husband's birthday, and we had a great time! The Guava Agave Margarita is tops, their chips & salsa are FABULOUS and my husband really enjoyed their Michelada. We ordered the guacamole appetizer (beautiful & delcious!), Lobster Tacos and the Aguacate Relleno. No one in our party of 9 had ever dined here before, and everyone was raving about the chips & salsa, the drinks, their plate - it was a great night!
