Diner Reviews
  • "Overall - Very good. But, it can be hit or miss on some of the dishes / rolls. For instance, I was not impressed with the tonkatsu or the NY Strip strips. I would recommend going with the Charity rolls or the classic Japanese rolls (ume-shiso, tako-wasa, negi-toro, etc.), or order the Black Belt or Omakase (Chef's Choice) sushi / sashimi combinations or ask for the fish specials/recommendations of the day. The chu-toro (fatty tuna) and the fresh boat-shucked uni (sea urchin) were delicious."

  • "...sushi joint in town. Its not cheap, but not overpriced. Super fresh and a great selection of signature rolls and inventive dishes. I never seem to leave disappointed."

  • "The best sushi anywhere and lots of alternatives for non-sushi lovers. Zama often has specials that are just delightful and this time, the crab and frisee salad did not disappoint. Service was wonderful. Every request answered. Please go!"

  • "Zama has been as consistently good and creative as it has been busy, something I deeply respect. On a Saturday night, with the bar, sushi bar, tables, and booths brimming with diners, the service slowed down slightly but our orders emerged fresh, at the ideal temperature, and beautifully presented. Even the tablemade tofu, whose chafing dish flame blew out with the breeze produced by the constant aisle traffic, set ideally, producing a first time eating experience for my seasoned foodie companion that she admired enthusiastically. Kudos Zama!"

  • "Went for a business dinner, and Zama didn't fail to impress. Great food and service, and the Dreamy Cloud Saki was great."

  • "It's been a couple months since I last ate here, and I missed it so! I was just as satisfied as ever, and will not wait that long to return again. Best place in Philly for sushi."

  • "Wow, the tasting was amazing, as was the salmon/wasabi and short rib dishes. Can't wait to come back!"

  • "We arrived 15 minutes before our 8:45 reservation and our table was ready for us. That was a good sign right there. The food was exquisite. We had three delicious special rolls: the black spider, which was the least fried-tasting tempura roll I've ever had; sesame salmon, which has surprising, refreshing mango as one of the ingredients; and the bronzizzle. I'd never before had a bronzino maki and it was unforgettable. The habachi scallops were a great starter (from the small bites menu). The server did a great job steering us towards the right amount amount of food. I would go back there in a heartbeat."

  • "We had the chef tasting menu. The guys had the 8 course and the girls had the 6 course menu. They were nice portions and absolutely amazing fresh seafood/meat! By the end of the meal, I couldn't eat another thing and it was well worth the money and the experience. The waitress was extremely knowledge about all the items that were being served. Great food and sake!"

  • "We came for a late dinner to this restaurant and I know how frustrating that can be but the wait staff was very friendly and helpful with any questions we had on the menu. We started with the Fried Eggplant which had ground chicken on top marinated in a delicious sauce. We wound up getting 4 rolls for 2 people which was a perfect amount and each roll was as delicious as the next. I'm no sushi connoisseur, but I know good taste and I would recommend Zama!"

  • "We had a party of six and we ordered lots of stuff to share. The fried truffled brussel sprouts were to die for. We eat at Japanese places fairly often. They had many unique offerings and plenty to choose from if you don't eat sushi. I have been wanting to eat here for two years and it was worth the wait."

  • "Zama offers a lot of uniqueness and variety in the menu, and there are endless, potential combinations of small plates. We were not sure where to start, so our server thoughtfully suggested some items for us from the menu, all of which were excellent. This was my second time here, but the options are so varied that I had a completely different experience the second time around. The flavors in each dish were all intricate and highly nuanced. This was one of the best meals I've had, and the staff were simply outstanding. I will absolutely return."

  • "Delicious meal, and great service. The dessert selection is also amazing! They make desserts fun, with a 3 for $10 option that's creative and tasty."

  • "Excellent! My husband and I had a wonderful experience! Everyone was extremely pleasant when we arrived and our waitress was exceptional! Probably the best Japanese food around! Can't wait to take my kids....they are gonna love the sushi! The short rib app was fantastic! A little pricy...but well worth it!"

  • "The sushi is very good and fresh but very pricey and they apps are extremely small. If you like ambience, and simple rolls then this is a good spot just be prepared to break the bank. I hear lunch is good here."

  • "Zama is one of our favorite sushi spots in Philly (tied with Morimoto). The fish is always fresh and they always have interesting specials. My only complaint is there is no moderately priced sake (there used to be). Other than that the service is always great and the ambiance is lively (but too much so)."

  • "Took customers for a business lunch. We all give it high review. Some of the best sushi I've had in a long time. Wait staff was attentive, informative and friendly. Noise level very high when the restaurant gets full. Will definitely dine at Zama again."

  • "The best thing about Zama is the freshness of their fish! We were underwhelmed by the Short Rib app and the Vetri roll, but the straight up sashimi and sushi-delish! Good beer selection too!"
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "Zama is delicious every time, we don't eat out often, but always come back here because we love sushi and this place is tried and true! Only wish they would reinstate a takeout menu, we have done that in the past but then they inexplicably stopped."
    Dined on 2/12/2014
  • "The rolls, sashimi and cocktails all met our expectations and satisfied our tastes."

  • "This is not the first time I have been struck by the utter rudeness of the maître 'd. Oh my goodness, he actually told me I couldn't have a better table because it was reserved for "important people." My husband and I spent $600 on dinner ($300 the time before) and we will not be going back. The food is great, but not worth the lack of courtesy. To be avoided."

When I leave this restaurant after my meal I look back on an experience, not just a great meal. Thank you to the staff for always making me feel welcome and special. MUST GO!!!"
