Tables a little close to each other but not an unusual set up compared to other great restaurants. Bronzizzle role was excellent, pork dumplings excellent, sashimi sampler excellent."

  • "I have been a chef for 35 years, I have taught in a culinary college, I ran a seafood restaurant that won Best of Boston twice, 4 star hotels, catering in Palm Beach, you get the picture. Zama is Fantastic. The quality of the food is the best. Flavors are wonderful. I only know of one sushi restaurant that compares. No I have not eaten at Nobu. I will go everytime I am in Philly!! Kiyo is friendly and always aims to please. Two seats at the bar please."

  • "Went last night with foodie friends who consider Zama their favorite. Had terrific service from Sam who gave us efficient attention and has a great personality. Also met executive sous chef Will McMonigle who was justifiably proud of his creations. The restaurant and bar have a beautiful decor--don't miss the ceiling. And the food was well-prepared--highly complicated in its creation, artfully arranged and full of complex flavors--we shared many small plates. Make sure to get the scallop & cauliflower dish--unbelievable! And the raw oysters with mango ice and caviar--I don't eat raw oysters but they tempted me & won me over. All other dishes were the same high caliber. Can't wait to return! Thank you Will and staff for a meal to remember!"

  • "Went to Zama to celebrate a birthday and we did the 6 course tasting menu. Everything they brought out was on point, the waiter explained in detail exactly what they brought out. He was also very attentive to bringing out each course in a timely manner and made sure drinks were full through out the meal without being overbearing. This is our new favorite spot!"

  • "We have been regulars since Zama opened and have raved about it to everyone we know. This was our first bad experience and it was really bad. I believe it was more because of the waiter than the kitchen. My edamame were cold and my miso soup lukewarm. The waiter replaced them. My lunch was served, my husband's was not. For a long time. We had to flag him down to find out when it would be served. I had to eat really slowly to avoid finishing before my husband had any food. His lunch appeared as soon as we inquired. He had ordered it spicy, it was bland. Flagged the waiter again, since he was so inattentive. He said he'd check his notes to confirm that the order was for spicy. Really unpleasant, lax, terrible attitude. Bad lunch"

  • "Lunch special is a good deal: udon soup, edamame, dressed salad greens, and a standard maki roll. Everything was tasty, though I would label the sushi as perfectly adequate. The spicy tuna maki was not particularly spicy or flavorful in any way. I definitely can get more delicious sushi for cheaper in Center City. PS. The decor was very nice."

  • "Found them in a "best of Philadelphia" list online, they turned out to be great. Two of us, we each did the $75 (8 course!!) tasting menu, we each rated it a 9.5. Good service, very thoughtful and well-prepared menu. High-grade sushi/sashimi, fresh, flavorful. Other courses were fascinating - rich flavors, interesting (but not unpleasant) textures, impressive variety. The seating was a little crowded, but a great dining experience. We'll be back."

  • "My brother and I took my mother here for Mother's Day dinner and we thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The food was fresh and they had a wide selection of items not often seen. Our server was also very knowledgeable on the menu and explained any terms not understood without being demeaning or belittling. The only issue we had was that not all dishes were brought out together. There was nearly a 10 minute spread before everyone got their plates. Considering we ordered sushi and shashimi, it did not get cold, but it was still inconvenient when we were not all served out plates together so that we could at the same time. However overall, the experience was well worth it and food was delicious. "

  • "Why is the noise level so high in most good Philadelphia reataurants? Here's a novel idea: just as theaters and the kimmel ask that all patrons turn off their cell phones before the event, perhaps restaurants all over town could post a notice on their menus asking customers to keep their voices low to help create a more pleasing dining experience for everyone. They would make national news if they were successful."

  • "Came here for my 35th birthday dinner as a recommendation from a waitress at Max Brenner. Typically, we do the cliched restaurants in Philly. Every piece of sushi was fresh and decadent. Our server gave spot-on recommendations and was patient with my husband and me as he explained every roll in detail. I highly recommend Zama and we take all of our sushi-loving friends here as well."

  • "We went to Zama for our anniversary. I love Japanese/Asian Fusion Cuisine, so I thought this would be a great place to go. We got there before our reservation time, and they were able to seat us early. They sat us directly next to two parents (seemed to be regulars) with screaming children (didn't leave until 5 min. before we were done). The waitress was very nice, but after finding out I was a vegetarian, started telling me that everything I wanted to order- tofu, veggie tempura, etc. was all fried in the same oil as all the meat and fish. I'm allergic to shellfish, so that was a no-go. The food was okay, not worth our $150 bill. Probably won't return. Very minimal outdoor seating. Good for Sake lovers if you want a $250 bottle of Sake."

YESTERDAY I HAD THE GRAND PLEASURE OF HAVING LUNCH AT ZAMA. TO ADD TO THIS GRAND EXPERIANCE CHEF ZAMA COOKED FOR ME PERSONALLY AT THE SUSHI BAR. FROM THE FIRST COURSE TO THE LAST CHEF ZAMA MADE EVERY DISH AND THEY WERE ALL MAGICAL. NOW ONE OF THE DISHES REALLY STOOD OUT BECAUSE OF WHAT IS WAS. THE DISH WAS THE BANGING MIYAZAKI BEEF FROM JAPAN VERY EXPENSIVE AND WORTH EVERY DOLLAR. COOKED TO SHEAR PERFECTION TENDER AND MELTED IN MY MOUTH LIKE A STICK OF BUTTER. TO HOLD THE TITLE OF THE FINEST JAPANESE CHEF IN PHILA IS AN HONOR AND IM HONORED TO BE FRIENDS WITH ZAMA!"

We've been to Morimoto a number of times and while the food is more innovative there, I found the atmosphere at Zama to be more relaxing and inviting. "
