Mesibah Tasting Menu Incredible!!Went for our anniversary with another couple-ordered the Mesibah tasting. The salad course was served in small plates-fennel, beets too many to describe. The Mezze course had the best hummus I have had in years but the fried cauliflower was fantastic along with salted cod, asparagus salad and more. All these wonderful dishes paled when the extremely attentive wait staff brought the main attraction--a whole roasted lamb shoulder with , pomegranate and chickpeas. I have never seen a roasted lamb shoulder that was mahogany in color and an aroma of pomegranate. The only utensils that came with the roast was a fork and a pair of tongs. It was falling apart like a smoked pork shoulder but tasted better! Each couple took a huge doggy bag.6/13/2013 12:00:00 AMZahav remains fantasticThis is one of our favorite restaurants in the city -- for date night, family dinners, and business schmoozing. The food is wonderful, the staff knowledgeable, and the owners attentive.6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent meal with few weaknessesWe went at 5 pm on a week night (early for our reservation) and it was quiet and empty. We had requested the Mesibah when we made the reservation. It took just a little while for the first course to come, relaxed. The rest to the meal was paced nicely. We enjoyed especially the salads and hummus and, of course, the lamb. A generous amount of food.
The restaurant filled up quickly and it is not a quiet place, but not obnoxious. It was completely filled by 7 including the bar. We made our reservation a week ahead in order to get the lamb shoulder and we completely enjoyed our dinner and our evening.6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMlove & careyes they put a lot in their effort and it shows.Wish there was a bit more hummus for our 5 person group.6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMModern Israeli with flairGreat tasting food. Food is many small plates so it is hard to judge what you will get. A bit exotic choices for some. Very pretty room, a bit noisy, but lively for a Wednesday evening. Service was very attentive.6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent eveningFound Zahav through James Beard nominees, and I am happy with the discovery. The food and service was excellent. We really enjoyed the selection of salads, and perhaps the best humus I have ever tasted. The duck kabobs and chicken liver mousse were excellent. The only downside was the noise level which made it difficult to converse. The wait staff was very knowledgable and excellent.6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMBest dining experience ever!!We love food and are somewhat adventurous with always trying new places and new foods. Well this was definitely the most out there food we have had and the most delicious! We ordered duck heart which was a little daunting and nerve wracking, but we didn't regret it for one second after we took the first bite! Service was outstanding as well. One of the greatest meals we may ever have!6/11/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat experience!Totally loved everything about my dining experience! I'm a meat and potatoes kind of girl but absolutely loved everything I ate and drank! Will definitely go back again! I recommend a reservation as Zahav fills up quick!6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMCouldn't have had a better dinner! We came to Zahav for the first time, for our anniversary after hearing about how wonderful it is. It exceeded our expectations. We ordered the tasting menu and I couldn't believe the amount of food!! I would definitely return for another special occasion, however there were casual diners all around us! I definitely would recommend Zahav to anyone!6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMA Philly FavoriteAfter several recommendations, we finally made it to Zahav. The service was excellent as well as the food. The only thing we didn't love was the duck hearts- but it wasn't because they were bad, they just didn't have the same sort of divine flavors as the other items that we enjoyed. It's definitely one of our favorites.6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMWe enjoyed our time in Zahav. We enjoyed our time in Zahav. We took our son for his 25th birthday and we were treated very well. The food was enjoyed by all and you guys make the best Hummus all of us have ever had. We appreciated the complementary desserts for my son's birthday since we did not choose to order dessert. Also we had 2 $10 coupons from 14 months ago and they were honored- not a question asked. Very classy. My only complaint is that the wait staff comes by too often to ask to take away our plates when we are still eating.6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMmediterranean medleyExcellent choices from various regions across the middle east. Very well executed. The friendliest and most knowledgeable staff around. Great elevational twist on the classics.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMalways excellent. Appreciatealways excellent. Appreciate that owner remembers that I'm a repeat guest.Menu changes in positive way. Avoids getting stale.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent AgainWe've been to Zahav several times, and this time, we brought friends from Delaware. They are connoisseurs of excellent food and wine, and had heard us raving about the restaurant. We all had a great time. We ordered the Mesibah lamb shoulder fixed dinner, and had wonderful salads, mezze plates, and then the exquisite lamb. We ate our fill and had plenty to take home. Now our friends are raving too!6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat dining experience!Overall, a GREAT dining experience. The staff is friendly and courteous. On the way to our table all the wait staff stop, and welcomed us. Our waiter was very helpful explaining the dishes and making recommendations.
The food was absolutely incredible! We can't wait to return for the lamb shoulder!
Our only complaint is the dining room was very loud. It could have been where we were sitting.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMEnjoyable meal3 of us went to celebrate my son's birthday. We had the $39 tasting menu and it was too much food. That said, we loved everything we had and the dishes suggested by our server were consistently our favorites. When we go back we'll have the hummus/salad combo, the Haloumi, Cauliflower and the duck meatballs. DELICIOUS!6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMexceeded expectationsOur first visit and the meal - Tayim tasting menu - exceeded already high expectations. Highlights included salatim salad selection, hummus and laffa, duck hearts, haloumi, kofte and the best cauliflower preparation I've ever tasted. Desserts (halvah mousse with candied chickpeas and berry coulis, ricotta/honey/labneh ice cream) were also spectacular.6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMFavorite Philly MealI absolutely loved this restaurant. The food and the service was exceptional. When I visit Philly again I will be back!6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMWho knew? When I think of Israeli food I think chicken soup and lox. Zahav is an edgy, manicured haute-Mediterranean boîte, not your uncle Sammy's deli. Dark, high ceilings, olive-oily veggies of all genres in teensy serving bowls, even high-class tomato-sauced meatballs spiced with cinnamon. A little of this and that, but pungently flavored, expertly broiled, fancifully served. Go if you want to be transported to a three-star Tel Aviv restaurant, without the crazy Israelis in your face. Go is you want to give your date an unforgettable dining experience. And don't go if you want a 16 oz steak.6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMoutstanding, uniqueEverything about Zahav struck the right chord for me. The food had plenty of familiar Middle Eastern flavors - lots of garlic, sumac, parsley, tahini - but used them in new and surprising combinations. The tayim tasting option is the way to go, and provides a generous amount of food without being overkill. Everything was delicious, particularly the fava bean component of the salatim and the grilled eggplant; my lentil-hating husband couldn't stop eating the creamy, perfectly seasoned lentils that accompanied the latter. Desserts were fantastic, nice selection of wines by the glass, and seriously eclectic music (Stone Temple Pilots, Jimi Hendrix, and Bel Biv Devoe) rounded out a fantastic evening.6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMSOGOODZahav was amazing. We loved every single thing we got. My nine year old nephew, who is extremely picky, even ate everything! Be sure to get the fried cauliflower and the mushroom/filo dish (don't recall the name).
The drinks are also very tasty. The bar is relaxed.
Service is excellent. Very good experience overall6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMZahav is always a wonderfulZahav is always a wonderful experience. In addition to the amazing food, the service is flawless. The wait staff is attentive without being obtrusive. Service is seamless, which suggests great communication among the wait staff team.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMBest place for Middle Eastern foodEnjoyed the food, the ambience, and the service was excellent.
Look forward to enjoying this experience again, and soon.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMZahav has an excellent tastingZahav has an excellent tasting menu. It is a great place to go with a group of 4 and share a variety of great food.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMWOW -- Authentic with a TwistTook friends from California here.. I know Israeli cuisine, they do not. It did not matter. We did the set meal where the chef picks the dishes. It was awesome. The lamb shoulder is a work of art!!! Brined, smoked, braised. Hard to say what the best part was..... Highlights are the Sable.. do not ever take that off the menu. Fried halomi cheese yum.... The hummus.... the best I ever had outside Israel.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMWoah Nah!Zahav is a dining experience par excellence. All facets of the evening at Zahav - from the delicately composed cocktails through each of the dinner courses, from the welcoming greeting to the table visit from Chef Michael Solomonov - were done with attentive, relaxed elegance. The menu features treatments that depart from the typical North American palette, but are somehow mysteriously down home.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Service, Good FoodFirst of all, the service at Zahav is amazing! The staff really made our anniversary dinner enjoyable and memorable. My husband is from Israel so our critique of the food might be a little more harsh than others. We thought that most of the food was good but some of the dishes I wouldn't order again. I would highly recommend the hanger steak and their specialty lemonade. The salad selection was ok but that would be something I wouldn't order again. Overall, Zahav is worth a try if you are interested in middle eastern style food.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMSimply delicious! From the smoothest and tastiest hummus we ever had, to the lamb tartare, to the skewers, every bite was winner!!5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMAdventurous eaters !We enjoyed Chef's selections, including sheep sweet bread and whole lamb shoulder.
Their hummus is the best hummus I have had!
If you are an adventurous eater, Zahav is perfect!
We will definitely go back.5/30/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was great, service wasFood was great, service was good. Only complaint was policy that we could not be seated until the entire party arrived. There was no place to comfortably wait and our table sat empty.5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMZahav is a special treat spotThe food was excellent, but the ambience was not. Two major criticisms: Too noisy and too dark. It was difficult to hear the other person at the table, and it was difficult to read the entire menu, especially the small print. The servers were obsequious and ever-present.
For the price charged, portions are just too tiny! In particular, the 2-meatball merguez plate and the minimal sweetbreads were hardly for sharing! It's necessary to order a big hodgepodge of the 'tapas' in order to call it a dinner, and seems silly to order several plates of the same item, which would imitate a 'main' course.
Too bad the items did not arrive with time between, to make a leisurely meal time, and to not 'mix' items assembled on the table.5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMFantastic Food!We were a party of 5. We selected the chefs tasting menu and deferred wine selection based on the food to the staff. the food was outstanding, particularly the lamb shoulder. I will definitely return when next in Philly.5/28/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat ZahavThe Merguez & Duck Kabob were 2 of the best tasting things I've ever had. Also ordered the whole roasted lamb shoulder which was excellent. Great dining experience.5/27/2013 12:00:00 AM10 stars!Zahav provided an amazing and flawless four course meal. The service was above excellent. Perfect, really! I highly recommend the tasting menu. The lamb shoulder was smoked and cooked to perfection where it literally fell off the bone. I cannot wait to go back!5/27/2013 12:00:00 AMFood and service were excellentFood and service were excellent here. We'll definitely be back!5/27/2013 12:00:00 AMThis place has amazing food. This place has amazing food. The food is served small-plate style, meant for lots of sharing. My wife wanted several plates that I was initially a bit skeptical about (I can't remember the names, one was a duck kabob and the other a small bite with cod). Now I wish I had ordered one of everything on the menu. Every plate was fantastic. The wine list is quite unique, as they have numerous bottles from Israel. I recommend this to "foodies" as I think you will enjoy the tasting experience.5/27/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat tastingsDefinitely try the package that includes tastings of a few courses. We tried some really unusual things and our waitress was extremely helpful in making recommendations.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMBest of PhillyZahav is unique in that it is a Middle Eastern restaurant that not only delivers the best, most innovative Middle Eastern cuisine in Philly, but probably the best dining experiences of any restaurant. The show stopper is the Lamb Shoulder, which is marinated, smoked and then roasted for over 4 days. It is the signature dish at Zahav and is unbelievably tender and tasty. It comes with a complete tasting of Zahav's appetizers + dessert at a fairly reasonable price. Definitely a gem of a restaurant in Philly.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMAmazingThe food was incredible and the service was perfect. Definitely will go back soon!5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat place w/ great food & serviceThe food was excellent and the service was impeccable.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMPhenomenal foodI was completely blown away by Zahav! Best hummus I've ever eaten in my life, crispy haloumi to die for, and the hanger steak and Moroccan chicken were excellent. We had many more things went with a group of four and did the tasting menu which is definitely the best bang for the buck, they brought complimentary champagne to celebrate an engagement at the table which was a really nice and unexpected surprise, would highly recommend Zahav!5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMCreative, fun and outstanding food!Wow, I super excited to eat at this restaurant.
I was very impressed. Very few philadelphia restaurants impress me. The food has unusual flavors, textures and elegant.
When your eating and you get the tasting menu-you can't decide what is your favorite! Can't wait to go back.
Get the lamb, Seabass was amazing.
Hats off to the chef! Looking forward to going back.
My only complaint. The music was awful. Weird mix-got annoying at points.
The table next to us said the same thing about the music.
I think it should be eclectic, chill worldly music.
I should also point out we were rushed-they did a amazing job getting is out on time!5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMStrong flavors! We ordered the chef's special prix fixe and the food was abundant, adventurous, and almost all incredibly delicious. Our server was friendly and helpful. One thing we felt was missing was something bland to balance out all of the strong flavors of the foods. They brought a freshly baked pita with the first course but it was not meant to accompany the whole meal, and the succession of one strong interesting flavor after another with no respite became almost too much for me. Also, I was disappointed by the ambience. The music was loud and obnoxious for dinner (including tracks like "Push it") and detracted from the overall experience.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMFantastic ExperienceZahav is amazing. Beautiful decor, relaxed and fun atmosphere, especially for such an upscale menu. Service is excellent as the entire staff are ready to take care of all of the guests. Start off with the laffa bread, hummus and middle eastern salad array and just order mezze and grill items as you go. The tasting menu is the way to go the 1st time there. From your opener to desert, everything is delicious and obviously prepared with obsessive care. An absolute gem.5/23/2013 12:00:00 AMUnforgettable ExperienceDining at Zahav was a fantastic experience. The service came as advertised-knowledgable and prompt. The place looked overstaffed but the service was perfect with getting new plates and silverware and bringing the food out.
The food was amazing, nothing like it. Highly recommend the fried goat milk cheese, fried caulifolower and the lamb tongue. Really amazing.
Ambience was upbeat and happy-people looked excited to be there. Recommend it highly and get your reservations now. Place was booked for a thursday night.5/23/2013 12:00:00 AMFirst time having IsraeliFirst time having Israeli food and it was a revelation. So good.5/21/2013 12:00:00 AMNever disappoints! It's always so good that we sometimes forget to go...but whenever we do, it's perfect and different. There's nothing like it on the food scene. It's an amazing twist on favorite foods.5/20/2013 12:00:00 AMwonderful dininga superb place! great service, wine list, and food. will go there again asap5/20/2013 12:00:00 AMZahav is a Gem!!Zahav was a wonderful dining experience. I had been there before but I introduced three friends and they raved about it. Of course, we had a very knowledgeable, friendly waiter!! Great ambiance and food. A definite "Must experience!"
CLH5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMUnique Menu, Excellent ServiceIf you're looking for a unique dining experience, this is the place to go. They have a very eclectic menu - we did the Tayim price fix and got to try a little bit of everything. I highly recommend the crispy lamb tongue and seabass crudo. We ordered the duck hearts as well - and while the meat was of good texture, it didn't have a ton of flavor. We had the ground lamb and ground duck for dinner and both were fantastic. My only complaint is the wine list is EXTREMELY overpriced. We ordered a "reasonably" priced wine for $68 and enjoyed it quite a bit - so we looked up the price later and it was under $20 usually!! I know there's a huge markup for alcohol, but I couldn't believe the price difference.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
