Authentic and delicious Italian fare. Chef uses fresh and healthy ingredients in all of his dishes. We have been to Zagara for brunch, lunch, dinner, and late dinner, and the food has never failed to impress. Nice, relaxing ambience, and great service. Highly recommended neighborhood gem. Very reasonable prices. Overall - Great value.

We came here because of the decent reviews, but the food was bland and fish and chicken were overcooked, the service was awful and they were out of some of the items on the menu. I would not go back. The server was nice, although didn't seem to understand English.

Our company executive team traveled to NYC from South Africa and 9 of us went to Zagara and had dinner. The food was wonderful, the wine outstanding but most notably was the personal service we received from the owner and serving staff. It was intimate and we felt very special indeed. We were also very pleasantly surprised by the very reasonable bill! We hope to be back soon!

  • Hidden Gem - Excellent Italian Fare

I strongly recommend this restaurant. It is a hidden gem in Chelsea. The food is excellent - hearty, healthy, fresh, and very authentic Italian fare. The service was impeccable, and the ambience is relaxing, warm, and inviting. It had a nice selection of wines and food. Furthermore, the price was quite reasonable given the value. The overall value and experience is hard to beat, and I will be sure to introduce more of my friends and family to this fantastic Chelsea spot and neighborhood gem in the coming weeks.

But the actual experience was nothing like we were expecting. The owner/chef could not have been sweeter, BUT the martini I ordered was watered down and tasted like bad olives. I returned it for a Chardonnay and got a Sauvignon Blanc. Again, he was VERY apologetic and sweet about it, but the overall experience was a bit of a downer. We only ordered appetizers to be safe, and they were fine. Sweet people, but they maybe just need more experience?

We were a party of 8 and were at kleinfelds for wedding dress shopping. We were already giddy from the dresses and then starving. We enjoyed the pastas they were amazing, various yummy interesting salads and 1 of us ordered a soup and it was so fresh and lovely. Everything home made and it was a great find- especially for the large party .

Not many cool places that offer Amarone by the glass; this was a welcomed treat, and a fabulous complement to a great meal in pretty environs. Kudos to the chef in both inventiveness in the dishes as well as unusual sprinklings of spices, ingredients whether entrees, sides, pastas and/or appy's. Pastas were exquisite; perfect prep with indulgent sauces and/or veggies, plated hot and proportionately to typical Italianate dining - which allows room for exploring tastes across the menu as well as lite dolci to complete the meal. Although you could walk right past this place, one you've dined here, you won't. Stop in and have a bite and a glass :-) Ciao!

We found this restaurant on Open Table, mainly because it was close to where we were in the city and had availability at peak time. That can sometimes lead to issues, but this place was a nice surprise. Food was great, service was very good, with the owner/manager interacting with us for our order, and providing a good experience. Restaurant was fairly small, but accommodated our reservation change to a group of 8 right away, and we had a great meal at a reasonable price. I would return if in the area.

There from noon until nearly 1:30 and there were only six other customers there the whole time. Even then it was loud due to the brick wall, tile floors, and hard plaster. I can't imagine the noise if busy. The minestrone was full of vegetables but totally bland. The pappardelle with mushrooms and garlic was wonderful.

We had tickets for a show in Chelsea and had no idea where to go for dinner afterwards. So we turned to OpenTable and found Zagara. They offer several imaginative salads for starters, a couple of which include finocchio, which is my current favorite vegetable. When my husband made a special request to combine their gnocchi with the Bolognaise sauce, they did so willingly. My risotto was perfectly prepared and the seafood in it was fresh and generous. Although they have a small, selective menu, it was still difficult to decide. We'll be back next time we are in the neighborhood!

  • Pretty Good not Great
    Evie
    Dined on 2/14/2014
It was a decent spot, not bad but not exactly what I had expected for Valentines Day. It has a dim interior which made it romantic but from the outside, the neighborhood was a little too busy/commercial, which detracted from the "romantic dinner" feel. The food was pretty good; service was mediocre. We sat w/ the menus the host gave us and then waited for about 15 minutes before asking a random waitress for water since no one had come to give us water or even introduce themselves. After that though, she was pretty attentive. The space is romantic but its not very big, so don't expect to have a lot of room between you & the table next to you (~1ft) which isn't very much when you have to get up and use the bathroom lol. Overall it was "okay".

We went here for the first time with five friends and loved it. The menu caters well to vegetarians and the food we ordered was all delicious. Loved the roasted vegetable appetizer and the Buffalo Mozzarella is also excellent as was the Pulpo. Pasta was great as were the desserts. Service was prompt and friendly. We will definitely go back here when next we go to see a show at Gothams. You can't beat the location just around the corner from the comedy club.

I bumped into this place almost by chance, looking for something in the area. I was attracted by the unusual (for NYC) name: Zàgara means orange blossom, the scent of which used to pervade the country in the general area from where both the chef, Giuseppe, and I both come. The food kept the name's prose: the arancini, the fennel salad, the eggplant parmigiana and the ricotta cake are all superb takes on traditional dishes, a long-lost memory I had a chance to relive, minus the usual disappointment. The service is professional and warm, with ease and unrushed attention to detail. Bravi!

We were so happy with our first visit. The food and service were both terrific, so we decided to return. The food was quite good, but our server - a tallish pony-tailed woman - was not. We felt mostly ignored. In fact, when we finished our meal she eventually came to the table and offered dessert/coffee. We said no and then she disappeared. We finally spotted her entering the restaurant. She asked if we wanted our check and she reeked of cigarettes. She went out for a smoke while we were waiting for the check. The other staff was very good. Hostess was friendly and bussers cleared table and made sure our water glasses were filled. It is amazing how a disinterested server can affect what should have been a good experience.

Thanks to other Open Table reviewers, we found this restaurant. I was traveling with 5 guest from El Salvador and we wanted a NY experience, good food, good wine, with a reasonable cost. Further, customers in the restaurant were friendly and helpful with recommendations.

This is a new restaurant and the menu covers the classics as well as some new and different tastes, all really well prepared. Several specials that sounded great in every category on the night we visited, and portions were definitely sharing sized. The waitress was trying to do her best but it was obvious that there was a lot of pressure placed on her by stressed out management which affected the ambiance of the establishment. Dessert Menu was offered by the waitress but declined. Due to a misunderstanding by the waitress a dessert was provided. rather than complain and put more stress on the waitress, nothing was said…

Zagara Wine Bar name may be misleading; the wine list is thankfully not intimidating and the bar is beautiful but it was the food and service that were the standouts for us. Zagara has been open for 6 weeks; we hope it enjoys huge success. We tried offerings from the menu and several of the specials; our waiter recommended a wine based upon our description of the wines we love. Everything we ate and drank was delicious! Salmon was done medium and moist; lentil soup w toasty bread a standout; caesar salad with fresh shrimp perfectly grilled; house pasta w clams. Our waiter was attentive and professional. The reason for our lunch at Zagara was a place to eat before the show; next time the show will be something to do AFTER WE EAT AT ZAGARA!
