We have a friend in the neighborhood who introduced us to Z Cafe. We meet here often for their fantastic mojitos. This time we decided to eat here, too, and then head over to Art Murmur. The cabbage soup was really wonderful, as was the pork stew. The ravioli was a bit too undercooked, and the salad was overdressed. But the service was warm and attentive. Overall, a neighborhood gem. Wish we lived closer!

The restaurant was uninspired. I had the housemade vegetarian burger, which was good, but nothing unique (the housemade veggie patty from the Rialto in El Cerrito is significantly better). My friends had what was essentially meat and potatoes. Our drink orders took forever to fill, and the cocktails were mediocre at best. Staff was friendly but service was slow. I'll definitely go elsewhere for my next evening out--not because the restaurant was bad, but just because it was so mediocre and uninspiring, and this is the Bay Area afterall, we have tons of inspired restaurants to choose from!

We much enjoyed dinner and the food here. But, for those of us that like to imbibe, the cocktail list is amazing including more that 30 different martinis. They also have 100+ different vodkas and vodka flights. During happy hour the drinks (and wine) are at HH prices ($5-$7). Food "California Bistro fare" was quite tasty. Our large dishes were Grilled bone-in pork chop and Coq Au Vin. Small plates ordered were white mac and cheese and seafood tomato cocktail with blue crab meat. For dessert we had warm blueberry-lemon bread pudding and Roasted Banana Pudding (both wonderful) Server (Angie)was very friendly and efficient but not hovering. we had a great table by the window. Decor very nice -high ceilings in former car dealership. Quiet.

I had early dinner here on a Saturday during the dinner break for the S.F. Silent Film Asssociation's presentataion of the epic 5 hour long silent film "Napoleon", and I was not disappointed. The server was very good and took my order promptly and got me out of there in plenty of time to get back to my show. I had a delicious Coq au Vin which was a huge portion with very tender and flavorful chicken breast. They have a huge list of specialty cocktails, and it seems like a fun place for lunch or drinks with friends. Overall it was tasy food, good-sized portions, good service and convenient location to the Paramount Theatre.

We had our Valentine's dinner at Z and it was fabulous. It calls itself a "cafe" so no white table clothes, but the food was world class and the prices were very reasonable. We had two appetizer, a salad, a main dish and two drinks and the tab was only $67. I saw young couples and minority people and older people in there which meant they had a nice place to go that didn't break their budget.

I've dined here several times and enjoy each visit as much as the last. The food/preparation remains the best, and the only thing I miss about the place are the cars in the adjacent show room. When the restaurant first opened, one could enjoy a great meal while looking at the beautiful new cars for sale a few feet away. It was a novel experience. I guess it is a testament to the restaurant's wonderful menu and ambience that it has survived while the auto dealership has not. Dine here, people. You will be pleased!

Close, but no cigar. Location feels dead and the food is adequate but not great. Sloppy in both kitchen prep (how hard is it to cut lettuce neatly into shreds?) and waitstaff (bizarrely uneven table clearing). Pasta Basilico was good and large serving. NY steak looked and tasted like top sirloin but wasn't bad for the price. Lobster ravioli was pasty, with an gooey, onion-heavy sauce that crunched unpleasantly from the finely diced onions and red bells that weren't completely cooked. Tiramisu is really a chocolate cake, fine if you're weren't looking for the real thing. They should repurpose this handsome space as breakfast/lunch place and hire better staff front and back.

The parchment steamed salmon and black lentils was flavorful and perfectly cooked. For the mussels, we made the mistake of getting the spicy broth which over-powered the delicate taste of the mussels. Next time we'll go with regular as spice aside, the broth was very flavorful.

We love Z so much we had our wedding reception here -- and if you are looking for someone amazing for a special occasion with a crowd, this place is The Bomb. So why do I downgrade the Ambiance? For a regular dinner there, in the restaurant, it's an extremely "live" space (tile floor, lots of glass) and the place is NOISY. If you love a fun, popping atmosphere, it's great. Just be aware that if you are looking for a quiet dinner, it may not be your best choice. The bar scene there is lively, lots of young professionals at Happy Hour, and the bar is quite good.

This is a favorite place, between downtown and Piedmont Avenue, good for before a performance at the Paranmount. It is in an old Cadillac showroom, very light and airey, no feeling of being crowded. Reliably good food, good variety of entrees and appetisers. Excellent deserts. Try any of the fish or lamb dishes, but other entres good too. Vegetatian dish always available. Large servings with plenty of vegetables on plate. Very helpful management, great cocktails. There is a small private room for group parties (seats 12) no extra charge, good street parking. I think you can get in without reservations on week nights except when the Oakland Symphony or The Oakland Speakers series is scheduled.

Food was fresh, but flavors were hit or miss. The lobster ravioli was a definite winner! The roast chicken was well cooked, but lacked flavor, too bland. The mac n cheese was pretty good. Most times that we have been to Z we’ve had a great evening. This recent night, however, was an exception. We were on time, yet despite empty tables, we waited 10 minutes to be seated because no one was attending to check-ins. After waiting another 10 minutes for someone to wait on us, we went to the bar for drinks. The bartender was aghast an offered to get someone right away. We took our drinks to the table and waited again. At this point, we were ready to leave, but someone finally took our order and apologized profusely. Unfortunately, as the theme for the evening suggests, we waited for our food, additional drinks, and the check. At one point, we had to head for the bar again to get a drink we already ordered that was supposed to
