  • "We were not sure about the peking duck so just ordered half. The duck was delicious! It was juicy and the skin was very crispy. Although the buns were like bread and not the thin pancakes, it was acceptable. It took us less than a minute to finish it so we ended up ordering another one."

  • "Does not matter that you have a reservation for a certain number of people at a certain time. If all your party is not available at the time of your reservation, or they don't have a table to accommodate your party, they ask you to put your name on the waiting list behind others. Essentially the reservation was meaningless. When I arrived there was another group of 4 with a reservation at the same time and we had the choice to sit together at a table for 8 or wait longer. When we were finally seated they tried to hurry us to order initially and then ignored us most of the time. Do some research before you go, the menu has many options and can be confusing. Watch out for and ask the price of "seasonal" items on the menu."

  • "First, let's be clear. This restaurant won't win any awards for ambience. But then again if you have been to Chengdu, you won't find any family priced restaurants that can do better for the atmosphere part of the experience. You come for the food. Fairly authentic food at very affordable prices. Food was served quickly and efficiently. By 7:30pm the packed restaurant was as noisy as can be... Just the way chinese like it. I'd go again"

  • "There was nothing wrong with our meal, but with all the hype, we expected more. I think the Schezuan items have been toned down for a western pallet, which is unfortunate. We had lunch here with our two boys. They enjoyed the food, but had trouble getting drink refills. The best thing we had was the twice cooked pork. It was the only item that had any actual spice to it. While the whole fish swimming in chili sauce with noodles on the side looked amazing, it was more sweet than spicy. The tan tan noodles were good, as was the beef cake appetizer. Overall, it was just fine, but nothing spectacular."

  • "We made a reservation for 4 and still waited almost an hour to sit down. We were instructed to write our names down on a list with the words "reservation." And then we weren't given a table until after all those who were in front of us on the list (most of who didn't have reservations) were seated. What is the point of making a reservation if you have to wait the same as a walk-in? This is a great place but I wouldn't bother unless you go early or late or are willing to wait an hour for a table."

  • "Z and Y was near our hotel so we made an OpenTable reservation for six people... and they told us that since we'd only made it five hours earlier, they never received it (I showed the confirmation on my phone and that's how they knew when I'd made it). However, they did seat us within a couple of minutes of our arriving. We ordered three appetizers and seven entrees, most of which were very good; none were great. We were buzzed by small, slow moving flying bugs during the meal, and when we went to pay with a credit card, were strongly encouraged to pay with cash. They ultimately did take the credit card, but the meal ended in an uncomfortable moment over the payment method."

  • "Finding a pescetarian/vegeterian spot can be a challenge. Fortunately Chinatown is a neighborhood filled with suitable choices. Then you can find a place with great food - then it is a treat. We had several vegetable/tofu plates that were really good as well as a deep-fried, fiery dugeoness crab that was the hit of the table. Service was excellent and the value provided was very good. Important to note in the area - there are two parking garages just a block away across Kearney and on Kearney."

  • "We arrived 10 minutes before our reservation, but the tables that could fit 8 people were all taken by customers who have not even placed their orders when we arrived. I talked to the waiter about our reservation, and they told me I only needed to wait for another 10 minutes but I ended up waiting for an hour to be seated. Our party of 8 was seated at 2 separated tables after one hour, and the service was pretty bad. I hope the restaurant can enforce the reservation that they took from Open table so it won’t ruin the reputation of Open table in the future!"

  • "I've had lunch at Z&Y before and have quite liked the food. On a recent visit, though, we showed up after making an OT reservation, and the hostess claimed they didn't receive notice of my reservation. Rather than taking the appropriate action -- moving us to the top of the list and giving us the very next table -- they told me that I would have to wait. The place was jammed, and we were on a schedule, so we headed down the street to Bund Shanghai, where we had excellent food and service. Given that OT reservations have been an issue for other people in Z&Y's OT reviews, I would not recommend this restaurant, and I urge OT to reconsider Z&Y as a participant in their program."

  • "We were a party of 10 and our experience was great, lazy susan in the middle of our table made it easy to share, portions were large, food was very good, creamy walnut-shrimp was outstanding. I would recommend reservations like we did, line was down the sidewalk. Inside is small. Try it you will like it, my husband is not a fan of chinese food and he loved it, especially the lemon chicken"

  • "Mixed service: Upon check-in, the hostess voiced that she cancelled our reservation because we were 7 minutes late from our appointment. I said no one called us and she responded that we had to put our name down and to wait for the table. She also treated other customers the same way. She gave us a table 25 minutes later. Once we sat down, the wait staff drastically made the service better. Food was ordered and came quite quickly. Better part: Every dish was delicious. Final review: if you can handle the "different restaurant check-in policy" and the long wait, stick to Z&Y for the food."

  • "Amazing Szechuan food. Most of San Francisco Chinese restaurants are Cantonese which is probably my least favorite style but that's not really relevant. A co-worker recommended the place and my brother and I went and we both agreed that Z and Y might be the best Chinese food we have had in the US. I've been there three times since and that hold true still. I recommend: hot and sour soup (it's unlike any hot and sour soup but still tastes like one, everyone who has tried it has said that might be the best part of the meal.), beef in chili oil (the go-to main dish), scallion pancakes (crispy and unreal in its flavor), and their signature chicken with a huge amount of chili peppers in a huge plate."

  • "FYI: the staff at Z&Y doesn't appear to know they are on OpenTable, or that they link to it from their website. Here's what happened: I made a 7:30pm reservation, and showed up 10 minutes early. Because there was a long line, I went inside to check in with the maitre d' to let him know we were there. When I said we had a reservation, he looked at me blankly and said "we take those?" I showed him the confirmation email, which contained the date, time, restaurant name, address, et c. He then disappeared for about twenty minutes. When he came back, he told me that if I texted the restaurant manager, she could put our name on the waiting list. Why this would better than doing it myself, I don't know. Eventually, he did seat us. The food was ok."
