A word from Yuzu
Yuzu Bethesda is authentic Japanese restaurant dedicated to serving fresh, seasonal traditional Japanese fare. For the past 28 years, Chef Yoshihisa Ota has practiced the art of sushi making in the United States and Japan. Yuzu brings high end small plates and tasting dishes that are hard to find elsewhere into a relaxed family friendly environment.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday also open space at the Chef's Table for "Omakase" course dinner. Cooked for by the executive chef himself, the diner is taken on a culinary exploration of sushi and Japanese cuisine. Due to the limited seating and extensive prep work for Omakase, reservations are required.

This was our second time here. Excellent sushi! Also had the corn tempura as an appetizer which was quite good. Sake martini and green tea mojitos complemented our meals. We'll definitely come back.

I had heard good things about Yuzu and went there recently. Tried the corn tempura, which was interesting -- light tempura batter. Had steamed chicken with sliced cucumbers and seaweed and a peanut sauce which was quite good. THe sushi and sashimi were also quite good as was the panna cotta (really!?). My only complaint was with the slow and not very professional service. Seemd like they were short-handed and someone from the kitchen was filling in. There are not a lot of great Japanese dining options in BEthesda, so I'll be back again. Hopefully the service will be better.

We went to use Yuzu as a farewell for my brother going to college. Very quiet and nice atmosphere. Mind you it was a Tuesday night. I went there due to the fact the chef is one of the few licensed to prepare blowfish, unfortunately he was not available that night. However the food is a bit higher priced and the portions are on the small side but the cuisine is definitely quality. The fish is super fresh and was absolutely delicious. The sushi menu is affordable but spending the extra cash for the more exotic dishes is definitely worth it. Though the dishes were a bit smaller than expected the food was surprisingly filling and had you wanting more. Great experience overall. I would definitely go back.

I tried this restaurant because I read a few good things about it, but felt very differently after eating there. The raw fish, by itself, was very good. But anything that was mixed, prepared, had a sauce or otherwise was a huge disappointment ... and at a high price!

The sashimi consisted of very good ingredients, but was overpriced when compared to other Japanese restaurants in the DC/Baltimore area. The wine list is very brief and grossly overpriced for wines that retail for less than $10 a bottle when purchased by the case. It was not a bad experience, but there are much better alternatives in the area.

On our second visit to Yuzu, we were more impressed than ever with the creativity and imagination of the chef. Here are two stunning examples. 1) Edamame tempura is a ~ 9 mm solid sphere of shelled edamame as a tempura appetizer. 2) I love salmon skin sushi and Yuzu serves it as an entree - Brilliant! About ten 5 mm squares served on an elegant long, narrow plate with a zippy sauce. Last visit, too many dishes were served all at once. That didn't happen this time. The pacing was fine until nearly the end, when we were asked about dessert while I was still enjoying my entree. That was the only off note. The quality of the sushi stands out from the pack. A wonderful meal, and the sound level is appealingly modest.

So happy to find a Japanese restaurant that serves really authentic and tasty food. We tried the corn tempura (a house specialty) and it didn't disappoint. The salty dip was a welcome change instead of the typical soy sauce-based dip associated with tempura. Make sure to order the soy sauce-braised pork belly. Different East Asian countries have their own versions and this is so well cooked that the meat melts in your mouth with no cloying soy sauce or greasy taste. NOTE: For those used to large portions of everything in many American restaurants - be forewarned that portions are small but typical of what you'll get in restaurants in Japan.

  • Pretty good sushi

A Japanese friend recommended Yuzu as being some of the best sushi she had had outside of Japan. We had a la carte sushi for a Monday lunch-not the best time to order sushi-and thought it was good but not transcendent. The quality of the fish was a bit better than Raku but the portions were less generous and the prices were higher. (We didn't have any of the lunch specials but they were quite modestly priced.) The wife of the chef does a charming job of running the front of the house and also makes the desserts, which were very good. Considering the Japanese recommendation I think it will be worth it to try the restaurant again.

It was nice and quiet on a Tuesday evening. Perhaps a little too quiet? Other than us, where were the other customers? Went for a last-minute dinner at 8pm on a Friday. The restaurant was nearly empty, however the hostess first seated us at a cramped two-top next to a wall. We asked to be reseated, and she then attempted to pull apart a six-top to create another two-top for us...she seemed satisfied with the wobbly results, but we finally managed to convince her to give up one of a dozen unused four-tops. The hostess was gracious throughout, but it was a needless and stupid hassle, and a poor start to the evening. It then took f-o-r-e-v-e-r for them to take our order...perhaps retribution for being so "demanding" (I promise we were polite the entire time). The food was OK, but not great. An unremarkable experience -- certainly not worth $150 for two.

My husband and I recently had a mid-week dinner at Yuzu and found the experience pleasantly reminiscent of our time in Japan. We did not sample the sushi but tried the grilled black cod with miso and scallop carpaccio and both were delicious small dishes. Both the preparation and the size seemed more Japan than Bethesda. We were less impressed with the miso soup with fish and shrimp, too much going on and the fish bones were a distraction but the desert -panna cotta - was to die for. Also really appreciated the attentive service. Overall - a 4 star experience and we will be back!

Yuzu is one of my go-to restaurants in Bethesda. The food and service are always very fine, and you can actually hear your dinner companions. One new item that we really enjoyed was the flounder usuzukuri -- a sashimi that was marinated a bit in the ponzu sauce, mmmm!

I read some of the reviews on Yelp and here on OpenTable. I went expecting fun, interesting, and flavorful Japanese-inspired food. My wife and I left $100 lighter, and not at all satisfied. The food wasn't bad. It just wasn't especially good - nothing to justify the high prices (that $100 included only green tea and bottled water to drink). We left hungry and got a charcuterie plate at a bar up the street. Highlight: the yellowtail "cheek" (collar). Lowlight: having to ask for ponzu to go with it. And then ask again for another (tiny) bowl of ponzu, as we were sharing the fish across the table. Portions were scant and, did I mention, high-priced and entirely unremarkable?

Having read reviews on Open Table and in the general press, I had expected better. The restaurant decor is quite spare and very cold, and the overall feeling was that even though it recently opened, the place needs a make over. The food is mediocre at best. Their sushi and rolls lack the quality that you would find at nearby Raku. The vegetable tempura was pretty much a tasteless mass. There is not too much at Yuzu that I would find redeeming. This is a one and done experience. If you want to dine here, go quickly. I don't think it will be around too much longer.

Food at Yuzu is sophisticated and elegant. Their sushi is notch above what the 99% of the DC area sushi restaurants serve. I would like to try chef's menu (omakase) next time. Many things there are carefully selected, including sake and BGM. Their friendly and efficient servers made our dining experience pleasant. The only snag is the space that seems a bit bare and characterless. Great addition to the area Japanese restaurants.

A little disappointed to finally find a restaurant with good, authentic Japanese food, then to find the portion sizes are tiny and prices too high (and they charged for green tea, which is not customary). The chirashi I ordered had the thinnest slices of sashimi I'd ever seen--definitely should be more fish on there for $25. I would highly recommend the Aburi 5 sushi, though. It would have also been nice if the waiter spoke better English (he didn't speak Japanese either). We had a miscommunication where we thought we were asking about an item that was included in our dinner, then found that he'd charged us extra for it. Of course we paid… Although the selection here is better, I think we'll stick with Sushi-Ko next time.

Even though the restaurant was only 1/3 full on a Saturday night, the service was woeful. Our server (apparently) decided to refrain from putting in one diner's order, since everyone else was served but that diner's sushi was nowhere to be seen. Eventually, he brought part of the order, and only after we brought the problem to his attention. (I say part because one dish NEVER arrived.) The food, when it came, was OK, but nothing that surpassed that served at many other Japanese restaurants in the area, including some within blocks of Yuzu. This was Yuzu's second chance (after better service, but equally unmemorable food, soon after opening), and it failed miserably. We won't be returning.

The service was awful the server didn't know what was ok the menu. Didn't know what sashimi was. Couldn't tell us what teas they offered. But once the food actually came the meal itself was good. The restaurant was poorly set up and so you have to wear your jacket inside as the door floods it with freezing winter air. There not many great sushi restaurants in the dc area with decent prices. So wear a jacket and your patience. And you will have at least good decent fish. I recommend the seaweed salad and the tuna sashimi (although it is not offered on the lunch menu).

We were a party of 9. Our reservation was at 6:15 And we didn't leave until after 9 pm. We initially Sat for a while before drink orders were taken. It took 20 min to get half the drinks and another 15 minutes for the rest. We are talking wine and sake. From the time our dinner order was taken until only sushi came was another hour. Add another 15-20 min for warm dishes BUT the last meal came out another 15-20 after that!! 3 people ordered sushi but it was brought out on One plate. Food was good but I wasn't crazy about The miso soup. Maybe they are not equipped for large parties, but this was at the top of my "slowest and poorest" service list. It's relatively new so perhaps it will improve.

Must have driven past this place a million times and never noticed it. Needed a place to go after the movies and read Open Rable reviews. Sounded good, and we went. So glad we did. Sushi was exceptionally fresh. We ordered Chef's specials - soft shell crab, tuna with jalapeño. They were excellent. Also had lotus root, tempura, tofu dumpling, miso soup and other rolls. Everything was exceptionally good. And the service was unusually outstanding. Attentive and helpful without being overbearing. The decor could use some sprucing up, but the food and service were terrific.

Ate at Yuzu for a last-minute dinner with a friend mid-week. Made a last-minute booking through OpenTable and hopped up around 7:30. The restaurant was fairly empty, with a couple of folks at the sushi bar and 2-3 tables filled. Our server was very friendly and courteous. We started with green beans in a miso sauce - yum! Then we shared a large mixed tempura (awesome) and 3 sushi rolls, which were freshly made, delicious and perfect size. We'd read about Yuzu in Bethesda magazine as a top Japanese restaurant and we weren't disappointed at all. Of course the meal was fairly expensive (we did not have alcohol and paid over $50), but it was a nice treat. Would return again.

Wish that the tea was served hotter, and that was in a container that could keep it warmer longer, as the pot of green tea become cold very quickly. A lovely find...fresh and beautiful sushi. The warm compote of agar, tofu, shrimp, edamame and a hint of lemon zest is sublime. Umame! Excellent service and n overall delightful evening. The Chef's table is great...just would expect warm towels, better chop sticks, and soft drinks/hot tea to be included. Would also suggest oiling the beautiful chef's table so as to prevent the water marks that the diners need to contend with, and would move the coffee/hot water dispenser off of the main bar, as it is in full view and is distracting.

Somewhat limited menu beyond good but not outstanding sushi. The concept of ala carte small dishes for Japanese food is interesting but isn't presented very well beyond a few "staff favorites". The tempura corn was unusual but heavier on the tempura than corn. A nice addition to the limited offerings on that part of Wisconsin Avenue but not outstanding.

They have only one lunch special "bento box" but they allow you a vegetarian modification option which is nice. The sushi is good enough. For the price I would expect it to be a little more cold, with wasabi dots underneath--classically done, and more plump. The crunchy shrimp and "cooked" rolls turned out better than where I could compare their raw rolls.... the sushi buffet down the street makes more sense for the price at lunch I'd say. But this would be a good dinner place. And I will give them this... their edamame is awesome. It served cold and sweet but each bean has such a silky texture---pleasant surprise.
