A word from Yusho
Street food is the great equalizer--no glamour required. Yakitori, when well-executed, is about the simple flavors of authentic street food. A hot grill provides intense flavors from seasonal proteins and vegetables, grilled to order over a chattering, hissing fire.

Beer, wine and sake selections compliment the fresh-grilled flavors. Craft cocktails, wines and spirits are chosen for customized meal pairings. Experiment and discover!Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Highly recommend the tasting menu - very nice experience, food was delicious and staff was very accommodating and friendly. Great evening!"

  • "The atmosphere at YUSHO is relaxed. The servers wear T-shirts. The menu is based on Japanese bar food. BUT... There are only a couple beers under $10. The whiskey list is impressive, but unaffordable. I paid $9 for a steamed bun that was just as delicious as the ones you can get behind the counter at the 7-11s in Tokyo. The search continues."

  • "I didn't want to know what I was eating but it all tasted great. The service was amazingly helpful and accommodating including the dessert sampling that made a great birthday treat."

  • "While the flavors presented at Yusho were mildly interesting, the portion size were far too small and the service was awkward at best. We were told all the dishes could be shared - not true. How does one split a whole BBQ duck leg five ways? And the prices didn't match the amount of food received. I would've fathered bone in chicken wings if it meant I could get more than two for six dollars. Outrageous. And after we ordered our 13 savory items and four desserts, our server seemed to ignore us as we sat with a table full of empty plates waiting for our check. It was after ten pm on a Wednesday. I'd like to go home. Overall, the space for the theme, but the food and service were lacking."

  • "I love this place, consistently inventive and surprising, Staff knows what they are doing but the style is a little chaotic with many different people coming to the table. As Michelin says "worth a special trip""

  • "Yusho is my new favorite place in all of Chicago. Food was beyond exceptional and our waiter, Ryan, was super knowledgeable about the menu and sake list. We will become regulars at Yusho!"

  • "I live in Logan square and have been here several times. It's a great place when you want something casual, but food that is exceptionaly done, unique and imaginative. The atmosphere is well-designed and energetic with a vibe thats inviting without any pretentiousness. The staff are pretty chill, yet still attentive, friendly and knowledgable. They encourage all types of adventurous small plates without over selling. The saki flights are a great to try different types and learn about them, but the flights and bites are an even better option! Plus they take reservations!!! forget the stupid 2 hr waits at other local restaurants. Book here, enjoy one of their delicious craft cocktails and some of Chicagos finest Asian inspired cuisine."

  • "This place did not live up to my expectations. Saw the menu online and was quite excited to try it. EATER gave it a high rating so I was really excited. For the price we paid, I thought the portions were small and the drink list was good, but the beer selection was ridiculous. The least expensive beer was $11 and all they had was Japanese beer with no Asahi, Sapporo, or Psing tao?? The food was above average, but I left feeling hungry which is never good when you go out for dinner. Unfortunately we should have probably gone on Sunday for noodles. May give it another chance but not for awhile."

  • "The food was so fresh and interesting. The pastrami tuna was excellent! Must stop by the sister bar Billy Sunday's for fantastic drinks!"

  • "Yusho's dishes have some great combinations of flavors. While the description says "yakitori-inspired" - I'm not sure that quite fits. They are small bites, but did not remind of me of yakitori. Still, each dish was well flavored and the ingredients complimented each other."

  • "Group of 4 attended, had a great time. The menu seems small but overwhelming at the same time, but the servers do a great job of reviewing options with you. One veggie in the party, they will do their ramen veg and several other choices. All in all the flavors were amazing and was a really unique meal of many small plates!"

  • "We just never get enough of Yusho. We think back to when it was one of the "Best New" in Chicago magazine and can't believe that it is no longer even close to new! However, the food, service, and feel remain as fresh and creative as if they are still trying to establish themselves. I mean, come on, what a timeless concept: Asian fusion 'tapas'. We love a good tasting menu but having the ability to create your own diversity (and size!) of tasting is only the best concept ever! We have to have napkins under our faces to catch the drool as we hear the specials...and then there are the "old favorites" that you simply have to try again...and the draft cocktails are just about the best concept ever. Yusho seemingly never disappoints!"

  • "I never write reviews. .. this is literally the first time. ..but i couldn't resist because my everything was excellent and my experience was that awesome! We went with another couple for dinner on Friday night and made reservations for 8:30. We got there a little early and was expecting to wait at the bar. .. however, the super nice host was able to seat us right away. What really impressed me about Yusho (besides the outstanDing food which was literally a party in my mouth with every bite. .. except the rabbit which I was not a fan of. .. just personal preference) was how nice and helpful every employee there was. Even thOugh they weren't our waitress (who by the way absolutely knew the food and was excellent), each of them helped out."

  • "Went for V-day. We were the first table seated for the evening. They sat us right next to the door. It was freezing. We asked to move to a warmer table away from the door. Every other table in the restaurant was open at this time. The severs refused to move us. We had to eat dinner with our coats on. It is hard to enjoy a romantic dinner while you and your date are shaking, cold, and neglected."

  • "This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city! My husband and I take friends each time we have out of towners visit. I think we've tried everything on the menu and have never had anything we didn't like - it's all amazing! If you go, be sure to get the Chicken Skin, Chicken wings, Maitake Mushrooms (my fav thing on the menu), Steamed buns (cosmo and cod are my favorites), and don't forget to get the Mocha soft serve! Those are my must haves when I visit, but we always order several more dishes alongside the staples."

  • "Yusho offered us an amazing experience in regards to food, service, and beverages. We began with a Sake flight while ordered almost everything on the menu. Most dishes offer a creative perspective of Japanese street food that in a subtle manner presents itself in presentation and taste. Some dishes that highlighted the evening were the pickles, scallops, and the ramen dish. However, also try the specials, as the beignet with seafood in. It is a must visit if you are a visitor in Chicago, but equally important to visit if you live in the area."

  • "Went here for Valentine's and we had the best meal ever! Ramen is delicious. Twice fried chicken is outrageous! And the sesame ice cream was so smooth! We can't wait to visit this restaurant again!"

  • "On this my second visit to Yusho I went for Sunday Noodles and had maitake mushroom ramen, angry red ball, tofu, and umeboshi . My partner had the Logan Poser Ramen with crispy pig's tale--a misnomer--it's really just a delicious hunk of pork, nori and cucumber. We both had our ramen dishes without the egg. Both dishes were delicious. I, however, preferred my dish, the maitake mushroom ramen. I;m not soup eater, but I will definitely go back for Sunday Noodles."

  • "This place was recommended to us by several people, and it did not disappoint. The cocktails are fantastic, unique, homemade. They are served in beautiful glasses and taste as good as they look. Unfortunately, the night we were there, there were only 2 bar tenders. We waited a minimum of 15-20 minutes per drink. Would have ordered a 3rd, but the second round didn't arrive until just before dessert. The food was beautiful and delicious. The food service was perfect. I love the vibe of the place and I am looking forward to going back."

  • "This was my first visit to Yusho but I had known about there $20 Sunday night special for some time now. I was not disappointed! Creative ingredients give their menu a fun twist on Japanese food. Fresh food executed in a tasteful way. The place is decorated very nicely, service was excellent with a knowledgeable staff, and I had an overall great experience. Will definitely be going back!"

  • "After reading rave reviews, we went for noodle Sunday. The fried chicken and chicken skin were not what we expected; not terrible, but the fried chicken was greasy. The noodle broth in the small portion of Logan Poser Ramen was very good but the fried pigs tail was also greasy. Finally, because the softserve machine was malfunctioning, we got the tofu donuts instead, which I thought would be a good thing since I read great reviews about them. They are doughy/ raw on the inside and the flavor was not that great; we only ate half. Overall, aside from the nice atmosphere, I did not find a reason to return."

  • "This place is just cool. I love the décor, I sat at the chef's bar/table and had the Valentine's 4 course to myself. Crab beignet was good, a bit dense- good flavor though. Then the Veg. ramen, it was okay I actually came here to get some late night ramen, but this wasn't as satisfying as I was looking for. It was under seasoned and lacked fresh topping components that I enjoy. Next, I had the oyster with uni and lemon, I am an oyster lover and this particular one was not my personal favorite. If you prefer the sweeter lighter oysters from the west coast- go for it! I wish I could've had more uni with mine as the bit that came on mine was almost melted away."

  • "The food at Yusho was amazing and they had just enough vegetarian options to satisfy our hunger! I would also highly recommend any of their drinks. I drank the prefect and a gin and tonic. The gin was superb! Overall, it was all great, but very expensive. Go for a special occasion and you won't regret it!"

  • "Really good food. We ordered 8 items and 2 specialty drinks. Fabulous. Parking is available on streets but snow plow in area missed... Pretty much everything."

  • "We attended a special sake dinner Tuesday, with special dishes prepared for the occasion. The scallop sashimi and the mushroom congee were absolutely spectacular, and everything else was delicious. This is a restaurant that serves unusual food prepared lovingly and perfectly. Bravo!"

  • "This was my second visit to Yusho. The first was a special promotion, and was outstanding in every respect. This visit was a unique food and sake/Japanese beer dinner, and it was exemplary from from start to finish. Staff are friendly and welcoming, leading to some of the most amazing service ever. Multiple courses of world-class food paired with interesting beverages, plus fascinating educational commentary. I had a huge smile when I left the restaurant that evening."

  • "What a wonderful dining experience. The level of attention to food and diners rivaled L2O but at 1/5 the price. The food was delicious and surprising, Japanese with a French twist. Our server was so knowledgable about our food you would have thought he helped int he preparation. And his knowledge of sake was like that of a sommelier for wine. We had a flight of sake which for the first time let me understand the subtly and range of flavor in that under appreciated beverage. Highly recommend."

  • "This place is the best. If you haven't been, GO. GO TO SUNDAY NIGHT NOODLES. ALSO ORDER THE TOFU DONUTS WITH YOUR DESSERT. I PROMISE YOU WILL NOT BE SAD. Please, book a table and go to Sunday Night Noodles. Twenty bones gets you a cocktail, your choice of ramen, and housemade soft serve. It's AMAZING!!"

  • "Every time I have been to Yusho I have received great food, superior service and have had a wonderful time with friends. I usually go for Sunday noodles but this was my first time dining on a Friday night. Needless to say the menu was equally impressive and fulfilling as ever. The octopus, cod steam bun, and soba soup with salmon roe are by far some of the best dishes I have had recently. Treat yourself!"

  • "Most of the food we ordered tasted good. Very unusual items on the menu like tongue and chicken skin and you have to be open to try things. They had a special which was skirt steak and I think it was wrapped in fish skin so it tasted like fish instead of beef. The portions are very small. Our bill was like $260 for 6 people and we only had one drink per person."

  • "The food is always really good. Great flavor combinations, preparations, and presentations. We went on a Friday night and, as was to be expected, the bar and dining area were slammed. That slowed service down quite a bit on our drinks. Really want to have the chawanmushi (sp?) again, but apparently it's not always on the menu. I'd go back, but the GF seemed to think it was a bit overpriced. To be fair, we were starving and ended up ordering lots of plates and bites. The steamed bun sandwiches are probably a little overpriced at $9 for 3-4 bites."

  • "Came in from out of town for my 40th bday. Incredibly amazing meal. 7 of us split 21 dishes and there was not a single one of us disappointed w any dish. Everything was amazing. Sharing portions were perfect for a socially interactive engagement of my friends, most of whom didn't know each other . Definitely one of the more enjoyable meals of my life."

  • "I must frame the title of this review by stating that this was my first time at Yusho, but my boyfriend has eaten there a couple of times before. I should also say that he is a chef in town, and therefore while I might be a foodie he has a whole different plane of standards for interesting, higher-end places like this. That being said, the food was overall very good. I loved the ramen and appreciated that they had a fully vegetarian option available. Note to veggies: ask for what the available veg options are. Some things on the menu appear to be vegetarian but aren't, and the ramen wasn't listed on the menu with a veg option even though it was available. Also liked that we could get a table at 10:30pm on a Friday. Great service."
