  • Entertainment: Established in 2007 "Since a young woman named Yoshie Akiba dropped the "e" off her first name and established Yoshi's Japanese Restaurant in Berkeley in 1972 with then husband Kaz Kajimura, the business was anchored on a foundation of food and live music. Through those early years, Yoshi's reputation grew as the venue became respected as a jazz hub. Before the end of the decade, the original 25-seat space had become unable to meet the demands of the increasingly popular venue, and in 1977, the restaurant was relocated to a larger space in Oakland. Twenty years later, Yoshi's moved again to Jack London Square, and 10 years after that, in 2007, doors opened to a completely new second location across the Bay.

"Here, Yoshi's San Francisco emerged into a time of economic distress--and rebound. The Fillmore is now on the rise, growing and maturing as numerous restaurants, cafés, and bars make the entire neighborhood an increasingly attractive destination." ~DiningOut magazine

Diner Reviews
  • "It was our first evening in SF and what a pleasant surprise. We ate upstairs to reduce the noise level. Food was tasty and service superb."

  • "overpriced and the food was ok, but not spectacular"

  • "It was my husband's and I first time. Ordered sushi rolls, very fresh and delicious. The only reason I gave it a four star is because I didn't like the seating set up. You are so close to the couples on each side of you that you have no privacy whatsoever. You can hear everyone's conversations and they are so close you could touch their food on their plates."

  • "I was pleasantly surprised by the level of cuisine at the restaurant. I knew the sushi would be good, but I enjoyed the entrees also. The beer list good be better, but I understand they were using lighter beers and Japanese beers to pair with the food."

  • "First, it took us 15 minutes to even be noticed at the bar (there were only 4 total patrons, and 3 bartenders.) Then, we were told we would not be able to order the ribs (a bar menu item) at our table. We asked kindly if our server would mind asking the manager, but he returned about a minute later and just told us no. Then, at about 10pm (we sat at 8pm), a construction worker with a headlamp on asked if he could dismantle our booth - apparently they were setting up for some night event and needed our table. It was very bizarre, and we hadn't even gotten the check yet. 15 minutes later, the construction guy came back and seemed annoyed that we hadn't left. There was no manager to be found. Super odd and will never return."

  • "Had dinner prior to seeing a show. Pick carefully when ordering. Sushi was fine but seared day boat scallops had been pan fried to too much oil making them soggy. Kitchen couldn't keep up with that evening's crowd."

  • "Service might be slow if you go before 7:30 when those who are going to the theater must be served first. This time we reserved a 8:15 spot, but got there before 8:00. They were able to find a table and served promptly. We really enjoyed the good food, the music, and the casual atmosphere."

  • "I understand there is a change in ownership occurring here. Media indicated they were going for a seamless transition. Not so much. It was 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged we were there after being seated. We ordered drinks and dinner, as we didn't want to be late for the show. 20 minutes later we still didn't have our drinks; 10 minutes later my glass of wine arrived, but not my husband's beer. Before my salad arrived, my main course (steak) arrived. I explained that I would like to have my first course first. My husband never received the soup he ordered (soup!) even though we reminded the wait staff about it three times! I did finally receive my salad, and my husband got his main dish, but I never got my main course back."

  • "My fifteen year old grandson plays the trumpet in a jazz band and loves music. I am so grateful that I remembered hearing about Yoshi's. We had such a wonderful and memorable experience on Tuesday night. The dinner was excellent, service was very attentive and the show was outstanding. I think I earned a reputation as a cool Nanny! Thanks"

  • "What a delight! We chose Yoshi's to celebrate my birthday and received the added bonus of live Latin Jazz. My husband had only been to the Oakland location so was not aware of this when he made the reservation. Excellent food, service and atmosphere!"

  • "This is the most wonderful venue for hearing and watching music. I don't think there is a bad seat in the house & it is small and intimate. The staff does an exceptional job making sure you have what you want be it a drink or some food. They are also very kind and friendly & make you feel welcome."

  • "appetizers were good...especially the calamari but the scallops for dinner were not as good as in the past. Felt a bit rushed that night. Overall we have had much better from Yoshi's in the past"

  • "We ordered the Steak Diane, it was very small. Went to Safeway after to their deli and bought some fries and a drink."

  • "We went there to celebrate our 32nd wedding anniversary. I also noted that on my open table reservation request. To my surprise they had no idea. Once seated a server came by and asked what we would like to drink and gave us menu's. It took nearly 15 min for him to return to take our order. I went to the host up front and told her it was our anniversary she simply nodded and made a notation. That was it ??"

  • "Change in ownership and employees has really affected service and attitude. appetizer came out with ice cold entrees. Waitress was very kind and took back cold entree. Unfortunately she brought back a hot entree after my wife had finished hers. I tipped her 20% as I always do but I will not dine their again.. The main reason we always ate their was the seat reservation that came with dinner. That is no longer their policy so we can eat somewhere else in the neighborhood."
    Dined on 6/21/2014
  • "Probably the only reason to eat here is to get a reserved seat for a concert. While the food was pretty good, it wasn't great. And while our waitress was nice, she was slow and made one error with our order. This was corrected with sincere apologIes, to her credit. Great place to hear music, which means I will go back."

  • "The waiter came over and said he would be back in a few. The few turned out to be 20 minutes. We asked a few questions. Then we hesitated and he ran off again. We asked if he would write two separate checks. He took his time bringing us the bill even knowing we were going to the show. It was all together on one tab for us to have to separate. The eggplant dish had NO eggplant in it. He said he would bring us a side of eggplant. That took another long time. Someone else brought it over. There was 3 skinny slices in a bowl. You need to rename that dish or give a significant amount of eggplant to justify what you are calling it. The food was average and way over priced. The service sucked. We LOVED the show but won't do dinner again."

  • "I went here for my six year anniversary with my fiance. We are big fans of Yoshi's. The food was decent, but not the best we've had. I was very disappointed in the menu, as it was father's day and there was a prefixed menu. I wish I knew ahead of time that there would be a fixed menu, because I really didn't like the minimal choices, and I wasn't willing to spend $50 on the prefixed meals. However, we enjoyed how beautiful the place was, and it was a wonderful atmosphere. I think because it was father's day, that the service was a bit slower than usual. I was also disappointed in the dessert selection. Very few options and ALL had diary in it : ("

  • "The food was good even though it took forever to get. The wait staff were awesome, very polite very attentive. After dinner we went to the lounge for a performance. I could NOT believe what they charged for two drinks was nearly half as much again as dinner!"

  • "Had reservations, was immediately seated but was seated at a small table practically sitting with the people next to us. (Restaurant was not crowded so there was no need to cram the patrons together) sat then at the lounge which was spacious but our waitress was slow and had hardly any knowledge of the food or about how the show venue worked. Food was mediocre for San Francisco and pricey for appetizers so no value for $58 that included SF's extra health tax. As for the show, it was awesome! I advise to eat your favorite restaurant then come here for the show."

  • "As a person who rarely dines out and never goes to a "swanky" restaurant, The Tubes show of June12 was for me a special occasion and the reserved concert seating was a big reason I dined there. And it was a belated birthday treat and a celebration of a new job, so I decided to treat myself to a rare dining experience. The food was excellent, the service was friendly and attentive without being intrusive. All the staff in all aspects of the club was also friendly and helpful. The only negative I can find is the tables for two are a little long and a bit close to other tables, so it would be hard to have an intimate, romantic dinner in that setting. Other than that, despite the (for me) heart-stopping bill, I had a wonderful time!"

  • "Great food, awesome staff, show venue was very comfortable and exciting. Love everything about our evening at Yoshi's"

  • "We were a party of four and arrived with reservations about possible poor service after reading posted reviews. However, we were delighted to experience very good service with a heads up approach by our server who was great and there for us. Service was quick and courteously thoughtful. The food was excellent and we loved the open kitchen. Especially amazing were the brussels sprouts, a must for all veggie lovers. The velvet cake was a solid winner but alas, the cotto was not to our taste. Highly recommend Yoshi's SF."

  • "We don't have this tpe of dining/extertainmemt in Augusta, Ga. While on a business trip I found this jewel on line. I made reservations not knowing wht to expect. Our waiter Robert Jolon, was fantastic. The show with Victor Wooten, one word - incredible. Thank you to Yoshi's."

  • "Having never dined at Yoshi's we were not sure what to expect, but we were very pleased. While the menu selections are not extensive, everything we ordered was outstanding, notably the 49er Roll and the Swordfish. The staff was friendly and engaging and not intrusive as is often the case at restaurants. We highly recommend it."

  • "This was my first time at Yoshi's SF. Yoshi's has great food, but the music is what makes it extra special. The service was pretty spotty, though. The server forgot to bring my husband his entree and the waiter didn't notice. The music upstairs was incredible! I would come again."
    Dined on 6/6/2014
  • "The food was delectable, but each dish took a considerably long time to arrive. Not mention there were no chopsticks at our table to begin with. And finally, when the miso soup arrived it had all the ingredients except the spoon."
    Dined on 6/7/2014
  • "Had dinner and a concert. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The food was quite good, however, I ordered a hanger steak medium rare, it came out medium well. The appetizer and dessert were excellent. The cocktails were a little pricey, but very well done. The overall ambiance is quite nice but the well worn condition of the tables and chairs detracts. The service in the restaurant as well as the concert venue was spot on."

  • "Dinner here was excellent. We went on Sunday, June 8, before the Justin Hayward show. Our server, Robert, was so nice, and very helpful with suggestions. He was very conscientious about asking the chef about a couple food allergy issues we had. The food was excellent, in presentation as well as taste. We highly recommend this restaurant!"
    Dined on 6/7/2014
  • "It would be good if the SF Yoshi's and the Oakland Yoshi's could communicate with each other so that, when patrons visit either, they can tell us what the differences are......which was not the case when I went to Oakland on Friday and decided to go again on Saturday...the SF staff was clueless about Oakland's venues."
    Dined on 6/7/2014
  • "Beings beer geek, I was disappointed in the depth of the beer selection. There are incredible beers out there that would have melded with the great flavors in our food. I can understand the Japanese emphasis in the beer selection, but there are so many more interesting beers out there. I would like to see more bottle choices in both beer and wine. loved the plank grilled vegetables. My brother and I fought over them. "

  • "Interesting Sushi. Tables very close together. Not intimate dining at all. But jazz club fabulous. "
    Dined on 6/3/2014
  • "Food was excellent, server was attentive and personable but the way the food came out was bizarre. 3 of 4 diners ordered sushi and 1 of 4 ordered a salad and the hanger steak. Steak came out first, the salad second, much later, then the sushi. I can possibly understand the sushi taking longer, I assume more people order sushi at Yoshi's, but the steak before the salad?"

  • "Giving SF Yoshi's food one more chance to impress, but they failed again. Everything looks pretty, but taste is bland. The exception was the garlic edamame - which was delicious. Will find other places to dine in the area prior to a show next time."

  • "Yoshi's San Francisco is amazing. Iv become a HUGE fan. The food was spectacular and I was so impressed with the layout and service. I will return!!!"

  • "The food that came out of the kitchen, which took forever, was very good. The problem was that the waiter hardly ever checked in on the table and then didn't place my fiancé's mothers order. She's a diabetic and by the time we realized her dinner wasn't coming out it was almost time to head into our show. She literally had to leave the restaurant to get something to eat before the show started. The waiter tried to accuse us of not placing the order which was crazy. The customer service and wait staff are terrible here but the food is pretty good. "

  • "Beautiful restaurant with lots of great recommendations from friends. Brought a friend visiting from out of the country based on enthusiastic reviews from people we know, having never been ourselves. The experience was a bit disappointing - not in one specific area, but just little things with food and service. We were mentally prepared for the best sushi experience available in the city, but things fell a bit short. The ambiance helped to carry the experience, but we left feeling like we overpaid for something that wasn't spectacular. The fish was fresh. The service was polite, but the frequency in bussing the tables was distracting. The venue wasn't packed. Happy we went, but I won't be pushing it on anybody as a 'must go' experience."
