  • Entertainment: Established in 2007 "Since a young woman named Yoshie Akiba dropped the "e" off her first name and established Yoshi's Japanese Restaurant in Berkeley in 1972 with then husband Kaz Kajimura, the business was anchored on a foundation of food and live music. Through those early years, Yoshi's reputation grew as the venue became respected as a jazz hub. Before the end of the decade, the original 25-seat space had become unable to meet the demands of the increasingly popular venue, and in 1977, the restaurant was relocated to a larger space in Oakland. Twenty years later, Yoshi's moved again to Jack London Square, and 10 years after that, in 2007, doors opened to a completely new second location across the Bay.

"Here, Yoshi's San Francisco emerged into a time of economic distress--and rebound. The Fillmore is now on the rise, growing and maturing as numerous restaurants, cafés, and bars make the entire neighborhood an increasingly attractive destination." ~DiningOut magazine

Diner Reviews
  • "The food was better than expected. Good rolls. Big plates were so so. Friendly server. Comfortable ambience."

  • "Food is fine, but the best thing is that if you are going to a show there, and you go for dinner, they will reserve a seat for you at the show when you get there. That means you can eat up till 5 minutes pre show, and not have to worry about getting a seat... just getting your check."

  • "What sushi the did have on the menu was fresh and very good, but they did not have some standard sushi items (ebi and unagi). Don't understand that. The food was also pretty pricey."

  • "the food at yoshi was poor. i've eaten @ yoshi many times and its been a good experience, but not this time . the food was bland and teastless,i order a steak ($25 ) med . two times and it still was not right and everything on my plate was cold. sorry yoshi is off the list."

  • "I chose Yoshi's for a romantic reunion night for my husband and I after being away for a month. The food was outstanding and it was so convenient to go next door to watch the show."

  • "My guest did not like sushi, so we went to other items. Arugula salad with peaches was fabulous, the dressing just right! I had the ahi tuna which was nicely prepared but served over cold noodles and sauce. It obviously had been sitting a long time waiting to be served - not too appetizing. My guest had monkfish which was served hot and was delicious. Server never asked if we wanted tea or dessert - just brought the check. Not the best for service. She was serving a large group as well so might have gotten overwhelmed."

  • "I had been reading some reviews on-line and several were negative, I was a bit apprehensive as I was taking a group of 6 to enjoy a Blues Artist friends son from the UK. But the food was great, the service was great and the show was great. So things worked out, just goes to show you can't always take other people's word too seriously. I think sometimes the good experiences don't get as much attention as the bad ones. I was definitely glad we went there."

  • "What sets Yoshis apart is having a package for great food and great music. But each is an excellent standalone experience. Have eaten here a dozen times since they've opened, most in combination with a show and don't recall ever having a bad experience. Had superb service this Sat. by Nadia (her smile could light up the city) and an excellent array of appetizers, sushi, and salads. Actually think that the food has gotten better over the years. My only criticism, and it is minor, is that the menu is a little limited. Of course, with a more expansive menu, the quality might decline. Overall a terrific experience."

  • "I'm attended countless music events in both Yoshi's Oakland and SF. I've had dinner at Yoshi's Oakland many many times. This was the first time we've had dinner in Yoshi's SF before the Music Soulchild show. The menu wasn't very interesting. The taste and food was just OK. We had a bunch of appetizers from the simple boiled edamame to the roasted brussel sprouts. The brussel sprouts were good that is served with the califlower puree. It was interesting that it was extremely hard to get a reservation for Friday night but as we had dinner at 7:45, half the restaurant was actually empty! Go figure. The restaurant is beautifully done."

  • "Specifically, the $13 pork appetizer had literally one bite of pork and about 5 oz of fat. The entree was so mildly spiced as to be bland. Way overpriced. Trendy looking food with little taste. The steak was tough. Overall, a big disappointment."

  • "We were a party of 4 who ate here for the first time. We had come mainly for the jazz and were pleasantly surprised that the food was also fabulous. Nice selection of small plates to share and everything was top-quality. Server was very knowledgeable and helpful as well."

  • "What a disappointment. We were so looking forward to the Michelin Star restaurant we've been dining at for years. The Cajun Roll we've come to love is no longer on the menu. The scallops were drastically under seasoned & incredibly bland. The mushroom risotto tasted like undercooked frozen rice. It was chewy not creamy. The food was just Terrible and way overpriced for the quality of the food! I will choose a different restaurant to dine at from now on."

  • "Good Food but not Japanese style. Needs to be in more in line with Japanese decor. They provide good service. Bus boys are on task. Waitress kinda floated around, wasn't available when needed. Chef's gave a superb presentation. Great set-up for groups, the way they can enlarge a table if needed."

  • "Went to Yoshi's for dinner prior to an event. Hostess was very friendly but the good experience stopped there. My friend was late, and I told the waiter that I would likely order for her so that our food would be ready in time to eat before the show. The waiter told me not to worry, he'd keep an eye on us to ensure we'd have plenty of time. Then that was about the last we saw him! Ordered a drink and some edamame; the drink came after about 20 minutes, but the edamame never came. When my friend arrived, we had to waylay waiter to finally get our order in. Then the order arrived, and they got mine wrong, didn't bring cutlery for my friend's salad, brought my main before my starter, and my friend's food came with only momemnts to spare"

  • "Server was very pleasant, but failed to bring drink refill orders until reminded three times; one entree arrived 15 minutes before the second; one of the sushi orders arrived 30 minutes after the first one arrived. We had already asked for our bill in order to make it to the 8pm show when the last sushi dish arrived."

  • "We at Yoshi's because we had show tickets in the theater. It was a wonderful evening for friends and family with a great dinner and marvelous show."

  • "Celebrated a birthday and enjoyed an early reservation before a concert. Bit disappointed that the waiter didn't offer anything special for the birthday girl. Polar Bear Roll was delicious and all sushi rolls were fresh and yummy. I chose Asahi Beer for my beverage with dinner... by the time the concert started the restaurant and the venue had run out. Too bad. Overall, we would dine at Yoshi's again when the budget can afford it!"

  • "Service, which in my experience, is unusually slow was vey fast this outing. Prices, though are on the higher side. We only eat here when attending a show because we get better choice of show seats."
    Dined on 7/10/2014
  • "We two ordered a number of appetizers to be served together as a meal. Each one in fact came out separately so that we were never eating at the same time. The last thing we ordered came out at the moment we needed to leave for a performance."

  • "overpriced and the food was ok, but not spectacular"

  • "It was my husband's and I first time. Ordered sushi rolls, very fresh and delicious. The only reason I gave it a four star is because I didn't like the seating set up. You are so close to the couples on each side of you that you have no privacy whatsoever. You can hear everyone's conversations and they are so close you could touch their food on their plates."
    Dined on 6/30/2014
  • "I was pleasantly surprised by the level of cuisine at the restaurant. I knew the sushi would be good, but I enjoyed the entrees also. The beer list good be better, but I understand they were using lighter beers and Japanese beers to pair with the food."
    Dined on 6/30/2014
  • "Service might be slow if you go before 7:30 when those who are going to the theater must be served first. This time we reserved a 8:15 spot, but got there before 8:00. They were able to find a table and served promptly. We really enjoyed the good food, the music, and the casual atmosphere."

  • "First, it took us 15 minutes to even be noticed at the bar (there were only 4 total patrons, and 3 bartenders.) Then, we were told we would not be able to order the ribs (a bar menu item) at our table. We asked kindly if our server would mind asking the manager, but he returned about a minute later and just told us no. Then, at about 10pm (we sat at 8pm), a construction worker with a headlamp on asked if he could dismantle our booth - apparently they were setting up for some night event and needed our table. It was very bizarre, and we hadn't even gotten the check yet. 15 minutes later, the construction guy came back and seemed annoyed that we hadn't left. There was no manager to be found. Super odd and will never return."

  • "I understand there is a change in ownership occurring here. Media indicated they were going for a seamless transition. Not so much. It was 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged we were there after being seated. We ordered drinks and dinner, as we didn't want to be late for the show. 20 minutes later we still didn't have our drinks; 10 minutes later my glass of wine arrived, but not my husband's beer. Before my salad arrived, my main course (steak) arrived. I explained that I would like to have my first course first. My husband never received the soup he ordered (soup!) even though we reminded the wait staff about it three times! I did finally receive my salad, and my husband got his main dish, but I never got my main course back."

  • "Had dinner prior to seeing a show. Pick carefully when ordering. Sushi was fine but seared day boat scallops had been pan fried to too much oil making them soggy. Kitchen couldn't keep up with that evening's crowd."

  • "The vegetable portions were too small, more a garnish than a real serving........taste was excellent.........."

  • "My fifteen year old grandson plays the trumpet in a jazz band and loves music. I am so grateful that I remembered hearing about Yoshi's. We had such a wonderful and memorable experience on Tuesday night. The dinner was excellent, service was very attentive and the show was outstanding. I think I earned a reputation as a cool Nanny! Thanks"

  • "We went there to celebrate our 32nd wedding anniversary. I also noted that on my open table reservation request. To my surprise they had no idea. Once seated a server came by and asked what we would like to drink and gave us menu's. It took nearly 15 min for him to return to take our order. I went to the host up front and told her it was our anniversary she simply nodded and made a notation. That was it ??"

  • "appetizers were good...especially the calamari but the scallops for dinner were not as good as in the past. Felt a bit rushed that night. Overall we have had much better from Yoshi's in the past"
    Dined on 6/21/2014
  • "Change in ownership and employees has really affected service and attitude. appetizer came out with ice cold entrees. Waitress was very kind and took back cold entree. Unfortunately she brought back a hot entree after my wife had finished hers. I tipped her 20% as I always do but I will not dine their again.. The main reason we always ate their was the seat reservation that came with dinner. That is no longer their policy so we can eat somewhere else in the neighborhood."

  • "This is the most wonderful venue for hearing and watching music. I don't think there is a bad seat in the house & it is small and intimate. The staff does an exceptional job making sure you have what you want be it a drink or some food. They are also very kind and friendly & make you feel welcome."

  • "Probably the only reason to eat here is to get a reserved seat for a concert. While the food was pretty good, it wasn't great. And while our waitress was nice, she was slow and made one error with our order. This was corrected with sincere apologIes, to her credit. Great place to hear music, which means I will go back."
