  • Entertainment: Established in 2007 "Since a young woman named Yoshie Akiba dropped the "e" off her first name and established Yoshi's Japanese Restaurant in Berkeley in 1972 with then husband Kaz Kajimura, the business was anchored on a foundation of food and live music. Through those early years, Yoshi's reputation grew as the venue became respected as a jazz hub. Before the end of the decade, the original 25-seat space had become unable to meet the demands of the increasingly popular venue, and in 1977, the restaurant was relocated to a larger space in Oakland. Twenty years later, Yoshi's moved again to Jack London Square, and 10 years after that, in 2007, doors opened to a completely new second location across the Bay.

"Here, Yoshi's San Francisco emerged into a time of economic distress--and rebound. The Fillmore is now on the rise, growing and maturing as numerous restaurants, cafés, and bars make the entire neighborhood an increasingly attractive destination." ~DiningOut magazine

  • "we saw a man and a woman at the reception area and neither of them were friendly and welcoming--- we were treated very coldly-"

  • "all four in our party enjoyed the food - better than previous visits. really nice night out all around."

  • "The sushi was great, but the carpet was kinda dirty. My wife smelled a bad odor from the carpet which threw off her dining experience. We told out waiter which said: "I don't smell anything. . . .""

  • "We came here for a performance and purchased the show+dinner package in advance, meaning we ordered off the pre-fixe menu. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves. Yoshi's wasn't out-of-this-world good, but overall it was much better than we expected. Definitely satisfying. 49er roll was delicious! Fish was very fresh. The sea bass main course was excellent--loved the lemongrass broth. Fried chicken was a wee underwhelming. Lemon donuts with strawberry dipping sauce... highlight of the meal. Service=good, attentive and everything arrived in plenty of time prior to show. Value = 3/5. Pricey for what we got... Definitely not a bargain dinner. But overall, makes for a pleasant, relaxing dinner if you're here for a show!"

  • "First time of many to come at Yoshi's SF. Started with the Dragon Roll, first ever for my wife, we loved it. Also ordered the squid outstanding. Some of the best spareribs every, my wife loved them. I had the scallops again outstanding. Our server Robert was very informative and willing to explain the details of our meal. This made our dinner much more enjoyable."

  • "We went to see Lynda Carter at Yoshi's and opted for the prix fixe dinner prior to the performance. Although starting with miso soup that was nothing special, the rest of the four course meal was fantastic. The 49er roll was one of the best sushi rolls that I have ever had, and the mixed greens salad with a light sesame dressing was superb. We can highly recommend both the fried chicken with cole slaw and the short ribs with carrots, both served with a small portion of delicious yellow corn puree. Although the portions seemed diminutive, both dishes were very satisfying. Dessert consisted of the lemon doughnuts (doughnut holes, actually) with raspberry sauce and the velvet bomb, and both were quite delightful finishes to a wonderful meal."

  • "We booked to see a show at Yoshi's, so thought we would make a night of it, and booked their special restaurant offer too. I was pleasantly surprised with the size of the serves, and the quality of the food - so if you are going to see a show, I would definately recommend the $38 - 3 course meal for before the show. The band that was playing in the restaurant also added to the atmosphere, they were not too loud, just right. We would do this again."

  • "My wife and I went to take in a Jazz show and opted for the package with the prix frixe dinner. We were both very pleased. My wife had sushi and sea bass while I had a spring salad with an asian flair and short ribs. The sushi was well prepared but nothing special, the sea bass was very good, the salad was excellent and short ribs tender and flavorful. The drinks were pricey but good. The service was attentive without being intrusive, the vibe energetic, and the live jazz music a nice distinction."

  • "Negatives: Our waiter seemed way too busy. We ordered wine that never came. You wine list needs to improve for a restaurant if this caliber. And we lost our promo code coupon ! Can we get it back ? Please call me or send one. Positives: Really enjoyed the concert ! You have a unique place and we are thankful for all the shows you are bringing in. We'll be back for Acoustic Alchemy on June 5th."

  • "the food was overpriced and just ok. the only good thing was the fact that we had great seating for the concert"

  • "Great location for dinner and drinks before or after a concert."

  • "I will only cut slack to restaurant because it was a sold out show for Dave Mason. Yoshi's needs a different system to give diners there seating tickets other than waiters, this puts too much burden on them and trying to serve food at same time. One of my wife's dishes was forgotten, my short ribs arrived cols and I had to send back. Our waitress was great, but impossible to be a good waitress when the management and kitchen is not doing there job. Yoshi's would not get there Michelin rating on this night. Management needs to take 100% responsibility on this and not even try to make it the waiters issue."

  • "Was looking forward to coming to SF Yoshi's since I had always enjoyed the Oakland location. We were seated immediately, which was great. We noticed that the room was very run down- holes in the wall where switch plates should have been, stained and taped couches, old chairs, stained carpets. Mediocre sushi rolls. Good garlic edamame. that wouldn't fit on the tiny table. Service was ok. Prices were definitely over the top for the quality of the food and the shabby ambience. The concert was great, but we were jammed around another tiny table with 2 other people, with no space around to put our feet.Chairs were again, dated and stained. This place needs to close down for a few months for a renovation. We'll stick to the Oakland location."

  • "Table of 9 arrived for dinner at 7:15 - we didn't have a server at our table for 30 + mins... our first drinks weren't to the table until 8:15; an hour after arriving. Food was good once it was served. I would not go back with a big party."

  • "This was my second time coming to Yoshi's. The first time my group had a great time. This time it was definitely a thumbs down experience. For starters the hostess's were rude. The service was slow and the entrees have very small portions. The only thing I like about Yoshi's is the concerts."

  • "Food was great...went for the Fixe Menu. Location is starting to show its age...carpets worn/dirty etc.... Though does not detract from the food. Service was average - staff seemed quick to be irritated by queries."

  • "I took my son here for his first big boy date - a fancy dinner and a show afterwards. Everyone we encountered there was extremely friendly. We were seated right away and our server was really nice. She even engaged us in conversation outside of serving us, even taking the time to speak to my boy about the artist we were going to see afterwards. It made him feel grown up. The food was quite tasty and I was surprised that my little guy was impressed with it as well (he's quite the picky eater when he wants to be). I didn't indulge in the wine list for obvious reasons so I didn't see what they had to offer. Their dessert is awesome - definitely don't skip the dessert!!! We would definitely return for another dinner and show."

  • "My wife and I had fun catching a show and eating a nice mini dinner beforehand. I definitely recommend making a reservation beforehand for the restaurant if you're going to watch a performance!"

  • "Great service, incredible food, and a romantic atmosphere in a beautiful building. What more could you ask for? Not exactly cheap, but far from the most expensive. Well worth every penny."

  • "We made reservations for dinner because we were seeing a show. The process for checking in for the tickets, and then going to the restaurant with the tickets was a little awkward. The hostess acted like we were supposed to know what to do and where to go. Our server ended up being very inconsistent. When he was there, he was a little over aggressive, but then there were other times when long periods of time when by without seeing him at all. I don't mind a relaxed dinner service, but this felt more like he didn't have a handle on juggling multiple tables. The food was great, and I would definitely recommend it again. Maybe our server was just having an off night. However, the hostess could have been a little more helpful."

  • "Weary poor service. It took forever to get our drink orders. Also, the person who brought our food didn't know who ordered what . We had a party of only 3. So there should not be any confusion on the order"

  • "Hey Yoshi's crew, Amazing dinner and show last night, the short ribs were some of the best beef that I have ever had, it just melted in my mouth, and it is inspiring. As an extremely picky eater (and restaurant owner), I must tell you that the sea bass and brussel sprouts were slightly overcooked, and its nothing that I would mention if I didn't think that you guys were aiming for perfection - they were still quite wonderful. Great wait staff, bussers and amazing experience in general. One thing that I would like to mention is that the tall host with the rasta-type hair made me feel like a huge jerk just for being there, he had this smug sort of attitude."
    Dined on 3/27/2014
  • "I will, of course, return - love the live jazz playing through dinner and so convenient when you're attending an event there. Our first and last dishes were amazing - oyster half shell special and Filmore roll - one of the best sushi rolls I ever had. In between was a remarkably badly made and not tasty eel roll, forgettable crudo, and really greasy, fat-not-rendered, pork belly. I hope this isn't a bad sign of a decline."

  • "Kitchen was extremely slow in getting food out in a timely manner. We sat down at 6:20, had a pre fixe meal and barely made it out of there by 8 PM which was when show time at Yoshi's starts. We had to ask our waiter several times to check, we got the wrong dish twice and had to wait for the right one."
    Dined on 3/29/2014
  • "Yoshi's makes it necessary have dinner there to avoid paying an exorbitant amount for reserved show seats. Our soup, salad (or sushi roll) and main dish came as we finished the last bite of the previous course--except when it came to dessert. My husband's drink refill was very slow.. Service on arrival was great and there's good support staff; they began ignoring us when it was time for dessert. We were at a table for 6 with a fabric screen that divided us from the four people on the other side. We could hear every word they said without trying. The live music was terrible because it is improperly amplified for the room and people had to almost yell across their tables to talk-- the noise level made conversation very uncomfortable."
    Dined on 3/28/2014
  • "The Noise was beyond tolerable. The music alone would have been manageable but the vocals made it unbearable."
    Dined on 3/28/2014
  • "Our party of six were ushered to a semi-private table which was very gratifying to start. The food portions were large and delicious. However, on a Friday night at 6:30 the dining room band began to play and all subsequent conversation was shouted or non-existent. We asked our server if it was possible for the band to tone it down a bit and they said many people were complaining but the band was ignoring their pleas to decrease volume so they had no control of the environment for their dinner patrons. As it was a pre-show dinner it really marred the evening as we then hurried into the show and hardly got a chance to visit with our out of town family at all. I would not be able to recommend Yoshi's before a show for this reason."
    Dined on 3/28/2014
  • "This bay area treasure maintains its crisp, vibrant and exciting ambiance with great atmosphere and great food. The meal presentations are try works of art, and portions are quite generous and the ingredients are consistently fresh and tasty. The table service is quite attentive without being obtrusive. And then there is the music ... hey, it's Yoshi's!"
    Dined on 3/27/2014
  • "The food and show made for an awesome Tuesday night!"
    Dined on 3/25/2014
  • "Had a fantastic time at Yoshi's for dinner. We had tickets for the evening's show. Our waiter, Chris T. procured great seats for us, a perk for eating at Yoshi's before the show. Chris T. was attentive and helpful about answering our daughter's questions. The only issue we had with the food was that the fish was not cut in a way that you could bite into it and have it break off. The chef cut the fish with the grain so you'd have to take the entire fish into your mouth. Otherwise the flavor of the food was delicious."

  • "great to be able to have such a delicious meal before hearing delicious music"
    Dined on 3/26/2014
  • "The food was very good. My entree(sea bass) was slightly over cooked and dry but edible. The rest was fine. The kitchen can get overwhelmed due to most diners wanting to make the 8:00 show and arriving at the same time. The wait between courses was long. Get there no later than 6:30 and relax."

  • "We dined at Yoshi's last weekend prior to seeing a concert at the jazz club. As part of the ticket/dinner package we had a somewhat limited menu, so we really did not see everything Yoshi's has to offer. However, our dinner was excellent, everything was properly prepared. Service was solid and friendly (very helpful to be very honest, as they brought our desert to us when we were seated in the club for the concert). Perhaps the tables were positioned a little closer than we would like, but it did not detract from the overall experience."

  • "Yoshi's has been a key part of the Bay Area music scene for decades. Both the Jack London Square and Fillmore Street venues have superb seating, sight lines, and sound; and both restaurants are excellent: innovative, broad in scope, and well-appointed."
