A word from Yoshi's Oakland
Yoshi's has served Japan's best traditional dishes to Bay Area patrons since 1972. The menu highlights artfully arranged sushi, fresh grilled seafood, classic Japanese dishes, and vegetarian fare. Patrons can kick off their shoes in the traditional Japanese tatami seating or dine at tables. Expert
sushi chefs create sushi and sashimi to order either in the restaurant or in
the jazz house. Start the evening in the cocktail lounge before dinner or
have a nightcap after taking in a show in the jazz house.

The service from the hostess to food server was awful. They are not friendly here and look like they are unhappy to be there. I still gave 20% because I refuse for them to rationalize their rude behavior. I have already started to tell people about my bad experience there, and it's too bad because we went to see Ottmar Liebert on Sunday and he was great.

We were seated towards the back . The noise vibrates and echos creating an atmosphere where you have to yell with food in your mouth. Otherwise nobody can hear you. I waiter was not attentive. We had to ask for drinks, silverware and he disappeared when it was time to pay. Our party had to go to the front greeter and ask for our waiter. We stood at the front door and waited around for another ten minutes in an attempt to pay for our dinner. As we stood near the front door the greeter finally found him. The waiter appeared very indifferent, nonchalant took our payment for the dinner and left. Needless to say we were not very impressed with our dining experience and most likely will think twice about coming back for dinner. Great show

We had a wonderful time. Yoshi's is a Japanese restaurant. As a vegetarian, I was able to find at least four main dishes that were suitable for vegetarians. The small sides are also suitable for vegetarians. The produce was fresh and well prepared. If you have tickets for a show and eat at the restaurant, you are given reserved seats in their famously intimate music hall. A great date night! We will be visiting again for sure!

We usually have dinner before attending a show (They reserve your seats if you do). Fusion-Japanese Cuisine with sushi and sushi rolls. We had the Seaweed Salad, Tempura, Gindara, Duck Breast, Panko Eggplant, High Note Sushi Combo and some assorted rolls. Everything was prepared and presented well. The potions were just right. The duck and gindara were especially good. Fro dessert the Kuro Crème Brulee was excellent. They also have a great sake list.

I love Yoshis for the great artists they bring to the East Bay. The restaurant is perfect for before the show. I'm not a sushi lover, so I'm not a good judge of their specialty, but judging from the full crowd, it must be good!

My main complaint is the service, which detracted from the whole experience. From the moment we arrived, the servers aggressively pushed us to order more food and drink than we wanted, which was annoying. The server brought our main courses before we had finished our appetizers, so we felt rushed and there was little room at the table for everything. Then one of them asked three times if he could clear a plate that we were not finished with. The food is overpriced and the bill was outrageous for what we ate, and for a meal that is required in order to obtain good seats at a show. Although the food is good and the ambience is lovely, I left with a bad taste in my mouth.

Martini was sour and tasted like a mix was used. Hamachi starter had too much sauce which smothered the fish, mango and other toppings. Too tart. Rib eye was outstanding, but should offer two sizes: 6 oz and 12 oz, since two six ounce fillets are served. It was a waste, since I was staying in a hotel and couldn't take back leftovers. Expensive for ala carte. Waiter did not explain anything to me, but did to other tables. Probably because I was a solo diner and a woman. It's a music venue first and foremost. Front of house was very helpful.

Yoshi's Oakland has always been a gem in the music scene and the Jack London area - it is a favorite for fine quality jazz and music shows! The restaurant on the other hand is good but not really special. The decor is very nice and the service has improved over the years, but the food itself is medium quality at high prices. And they like you to buy dinner in order to reserve the best seats at the jazz club, a system I don't really approve of. The menu has western items as well as sushi so it can appeal to a wide variety of diners. But prices are quite high and the quality of the food is not the highest of caliber. My soft shell crab was fried and greasy inside. Sushi was fresh but not special. The salad was excellent however. Service ok

Our server was very pleasant. Didn't hover but was attentive. Made sure our seating arrangements for the show were taken care of and reminded us to get our parking tickets validated. Food was very good. We had a group and decided to just sample the various rolls between us. These were very good, but a little pedestrian...... Next time we'll order separately and try something new. But as always, we'll be back and looking forward to a great meal and a great show. Thank You Yoshi's for being a bright spot to us all.

The food was decent, but a smidge too expensive. We ordered the Japonese roll (Great!) Lobster Tempura roll (meh.) Miso Caesar Salad (A++, would order again) Veggie Tempura (good) and Soy Garlic Edamame (YUMMMM). The food runner accidentally gave our soy-garlic edamame to another table, but our waiter immediately remedied the situation (by getting us a new one) and took it off our bill. Overall pleasant experience, but I was sad I didn't order the scallops after seeing a few orders go by. Thanks, Yoshi!

If you are going to a show, this is a good place to eat as you will have your seats reserved in the club and not have any hassles in waiting on line. Plus, there are not many options in this neighborhood to have a decent meal in a pleasant atmosphere. The downside is that the prices are inflated and portions are on the small side. For a serving of vegetable tempura, one spider roll and one spicy tuna roll, a beer and sparking water, the bill came to $50 before tip--I'd say this is too high by about a third, but this is the tradeoff one must make at times.

Arrive on time at 8:15p for diner reservations with late show tickets, (which were to be held at will call), told to see box office before taking name or any conciderations for dinner. the box office could not find reservations I brought tickets up on line and told they were for dinner and not the show. Bought new tickets then told my dinner reservations were a no show. Foretunatly I was with a verygrounded lady friend that calmed my nerves with an understanding waitress and a Martini. I will be returing only for reimbursment of duplicate reservations.

Yoshi's is a fine restaurant with great food and service. My experiences have been great. It is difficult to rush out all the food and drinks for the crowd going to the show at 8:00. If I had to wait for something due to the rush, it was complimentary. Highly recommended for both the food and music. If you've never been there, you are missing something.

Although the sushi, sashimi and tempura dishes are all first rate, the duck item is among the best duck dishes I've ever had, anywhere. They cook it perfectly to order -- I like mine rare and my wife likes hers medium, which is exactly how our two dishes were delivered. Along with the squash puree and caramelized cabbage, this dish is so pure, it really sings!

Due to having tickets for the Shawn Colvin concert, we decided to make our dinner reservations at Yoshi's as well. The restaurant is nicely decorated and all staff were attentive. If we were not visiting from out of the area, we would have returned to try out many of the interesting offerings. We especially loved the Snow Monkey sushi and my husband very much enjoyed the swordfish with mango. The only somewhat disappointing item we had was the brownie dessert (it seemed a bit dry and cold) but it did not overshadow the full experience. If we return to Oakland in the future, we will definitely dine with them again.

We had not eaten in this restaurant in quite a few years. The food has really gotten a lot better than we remember it. The waiter was very good at really "spot on" suggestions. It appears as if the kitchen gets a bit backed up though, so I would suggest you order your entree at the time you order your appetizer if you are going to an 8:00 show at the Jazz club.
