A word from Yoshi's Oakland
Yoshi's has served Japan's best traditional dishes to Bay Area patrons since 1972. The menu highlights artfully arranged sushi, fresh grilled seafood, classic Japanese dishes, and vegetarian fare. Patrons can kick off their shoes in the traditional Japanese tatami seating or dine at tables. Expert
sushi chefs create sushi and sashimi to order either in the restaurant or in
the jazz house. Start the evening in the cocktail lounge before dinner or
have a nightcap after taking in a show in the jazz house.

Diner Reviews
  • "My main complaint is the service, which detracted from the whole experience. From the moment we arrived, the servers aggressively pushed us to order more food and drink than we wanted, which was annoying. The server brought our main courses before we had finished our appetizers, so we felt rushed and there was little room at the table for everything. Then one of them asked three times if he could clear a plate that we were not finished with. The food is overpriced and the bill was outrageous for what we ate, and for a meal that is required in order to obtain good seats at a show. Although the food is good and the ambience is lovely, I left with a bad taste in my mouth."

  • " Martini was sour and tasted like a mix was used. Hamachi starter had too much sauce which smothered the fish, mango and other toppings. Too tart. Rib eye was outstanding, but should offer two sizes: 6 oz and 12 oz, since two six ounce fillets are served. It was a waste, since I was staying in a hotel and couldn't take back leftovers. Expensive for ala carte. Waiter did not explain anything to me, but did to other tables. Probably because I was a solo diner and a woman. It's a music venue first and foremost. Front of house was very helpful."

  • "Yoshi's Oakland has always been a gem in the music scene and the Jack London area - it is a favorite for fine quality jazz and music shows! The restaurant on the other hand is good but not really special. The decor is very nice and the service has improved over the years, but the food itself is medium quality at high prices. And they like you to buy dinner in order to reserve the best seats at the jazz club, a system I don't really approve of. The menu has western items as well as sushi so it can appeal to a wide variety of diners. But prices are quite high and the quality of the food is not the highest of caliber. My soft shell crab was fried and greasy inside. Sushi was fresh but not special. The salad was excellent however. Service ok"

  • "Wonderful food and ambiance, perfect if you are attending a show afterwards--the combination of sushi followed by hot jazz is not to be missed!"

  • "Our server was very pleasant. Didn't hover but was attentive. Made sure our seating arrangements for the show were taken care of and reminded us to get our parking tickets validated. Food was very good. We had a group and decided to just sample the various rolls between us. These were very good, but a little pedestrian...... Next time we'll order separately and try something new. But as always, we'll be back and looking forward to a great meal and a great show. Thank You Yoshi's for being a bright spot to us all."

  • "The food was decent, but a smidge too expensive. We ordered the Japonese roll (Great!) Lobster Tempura roll (meh.) Miso Caesar Salad (A++, would order again) Veggie Tempura (good) and Soy Garlic Edamame (YUMMMM). The food runner accidentally gave our soy-garlic edamame to another table, but our waiter immediately remedied the situation (by getting us a new one) and took it off our bill. Overall pleasant experience, but I was sad I didn't order the scallops after seeing a few orders go by. Thanks, Yoshi!"

  • "Yoshis is always a winner. The food is consistently excellent and the service has never disappointed."

  • "If you are going to a show, this is a good place to eat as you will have your seats reserved in the club and not have any hassles in waiting on line. Plus, there are not many options in this neighborhood to have a decent meal in a pleasant atmosphere. The downside is that the prices are inflated and portions are on the small side. For a serving of vegetable tempura, one spider roll and one spicy tuna roll, a beer and sparking water, the bill came to $50 before tip--I'd say this is too high by about a third, but this is the tradeoff one must make at times."

  • "Everything was exceptional and I had an amazing time with my international friend from Germany. He was even surprised at this wonderful place. Not even Germany has something special like this restaurant. I will definitely be back!"

  • "Arrive on time at 8:15p for diner reservations with late show tickets, (which were to be held at will call), told to see box office before taking name or any conciderations for dinner. the box office could not find reservations I brought tickets up on line and told they were for dinner and not the show. Bought new tickets then told my dinner reservations were a no show. Foretunatly I was with a verygrounded lady friend that calmed my nerves with an understanding waitress and a Martini. I will be returing only for reimbursment of duplicate reservations."

  • "Yoshi's is a fine restaurant with great food and service. My experiences have been great. It is difficult to rush out all the food and drinks for the crowd going to the show at 8:00. If I had to wait for something due to the rush, it was complimentary. Highly recommended for both the food and music. If you've never been there, you are missing something."

  • "Went to a pre-concert dinner. Staff was great. Seating was just fine in a small corner. Wait staff was friendly and very attentive. We both had the teriyaki chicken and it was cooked perfect. Would love to dine here again."

  • "Delicious, wide variety of Japanese cuisine in friendly, authentic atmosphere. Food, wine, service absolutely first rate. Pricey but worth it. This is where you want to go if you want to go first class. And if you've got tickets to Yoshi's jazz show, combining your evening with dinner at the restaurant is the perfect pairing."

  • "Although the sushi, sashimi and tempura dishes are all first rate, the duck item is among the best duck dishes I've ever had, anywhere. They cook it perfectly to order -- I like mine rare and my wife likes hers medium, which is exactly how our two dishes were delivered. Along with the squash puree and caramelized cabbage, this dish is so pure, it really sings!"

  • "Great service and great food. Our server had it down with great advice and a warm and inviting manner. We felt special and really enjoyed our 3 very different meals."

  • "Due to having tickets for the Shawn Colvin concert, we decided to make our dinner reservations at Yoshi's as well. The restaurant is nicely decorated and all staff were attentive. If we were not visiting from out of the area, we would have returned to try out many of the interesting offerings. We especially loved the Snow Monkey sushi and my husband very much enjoyed the swordfish with mango. The only somewhat disappointing item we had was the brownie dessert (it seemed a bit dry and cold) but it did not overshadow the full experience. If we return to Oakland in the future, we will definitely dine with them again."

  • "I frequent this restaurant often. They changed the menu Saturday so a couple of my favorite items, one being Brussel sprouts was not on the menu. Overall,I love Yoshis Oakland."

  • "This place has become an Oakland mainstay. Always classy, always a great atmosphere! The food is awesome, the drinks hit their mark as well! My wife loves when I take her there, which is always a plus. Yoshi's Oakland keep up the good work!"

  • "But the noise level was so loud that it was an unpleasant dining experience. Had to shout at each other."
    Dined on 8/2/2014
  • "Although I love going to the Jazz cafe, the restuarant itself is way over priced for the quality of food and portion sizes! I will never order dinner there again."

  • "We enjoyed the freshness of the black cod. I was disappointed restaurant was sold out of asparagus at 7pm. Our waiter Troy/Todd was attentive and made sure we had enough time to enjoy dinner before our show at 8pm"

  • "I arrived late for my dinner; however, the resturaunt staff was accomodating and saved my reservation. I did not enjoy my order of vegetable tempura. I suspect that the remainder of the menu was decent. The person that I arrived with ordered and meal and it was late, incomplete and cold. I don't know if that was a consequence of my being tardy or a mix-up in the kitchen. Thanks."

  • "We eat there just because we had Jazz show tickets. They reserve good seats for the diners who are going the show. Over the years, the restaurant became just expensive Cal-Japanese cuisine. Fish quality is not so great so I stick to safer choices like maki sushi."

  • "We had not eaten in this restaurant in quite a few years. The food has really gotten a lot better than we remember it. The waiter was very good at really "spot on" suggestions. It appears as if the kitchen gets a bit backed up though, so I would suggest you order your entree at the time you order your appetizer if you are going to an 8:00 show at the Jazz club. Overall very nice experience!"

  • "Were it not for the entertainment, I would not go to this restaurant. I've been to an excellent Japanese restaurant and this could not compare to that. It had a very limited, Americanized menu. I had to do a process of elimination to finally select my dinner."

  • "We saw Ron Carter Trio. Food was great - as always - and getting these seats meant we had a good place to listen to the music. Sushi was fresh, generous. Kids enjoyed - and our table was half vegetarian and also remarked a the many menu items and quality."

  • "Haven't been to Yoshi's for a few years, but have been a customer since the 90s. This visit reminded me that Yoshi's is truly one of the top Sushi restaurants in the Bay Area. We shared a perfectly prepared grilled salmon, as well as some sushi. The fish ranks with the highest quality I have had in any restaurant and expertly prepared. We also had the not very Japanese spinach, bacon and blue cheese salad. Also, one of the best I have had. Don't know if it was a particularly on night or what, but the food struck me as the top of their game. Be forewarned that it is not cheap, but it is delicious."

  • "We started of with a wonderful waiter who guided us through the menu and made is feel we were his on table. His attention and aling with a great personality made our first time at Yoshi's exceptional. Ended with satisfied tummies and wonderful music. You guys made us all feel like VIP's."
