Diner Reviews
  • "I had been to this restaurant decades ago and returned for the breathtaking views. This time the food was fantastic and worthy of the setting. Try the scallops and shrimp and any of the sushi roll appetizers. This was my favorite experience in L.A. If you can, come early ( 7:30) and get a table next to the window and watch the sunset light up downtown."

  • "Took my girlfriend here for her birthday and we were both blown away. It's tucked away on a hill in a quiet residential neighborhood above Hollywood and the window tables have great city views. The food was even was even better, we both stuck with the seafood and were not disappointed, quality fish cooked perfectly with great presentation and excellent wait staff. Definitely on the pricey side but well worth it. And the cocktails we awesome too!"

  • "I have always loved yamashiro for their vast menu. However, this time around I found the menu smaller and less choices. The seafood dinner they use to have is no longer and I was looking forward to that. Overall great spot for dining, and great service. A possible restoration or small update might be due for the restaurant."

  • "Awesome food, service and scenic view from the table next to the window in the corner. Made our anniversary dinning out a perfect memory for us."

  • "Caveat everything with the fact that we dined early on a Sunday evening. Dining room doesn't open until 5:30pm. The bar had limited open seating, but was empty, so it wasn't a problem. $25 for a Mai Tai and a glass of Pinot. The pager buzzed right at 5:30. Server was excellent until the restaurant was getting packed, then there were longer waits. The portions were correctly sized, but others may think them skimpy. Ordered Crabcakes, steak, Salmon for my wife. Both excellent. For dessert, Molten Chocolate Cake and S'Mores Brownie. Dinner was $125. Most customers were clearly tourists--dressed and behaved accordingly. This clashed with the price and style they are trying to present. It damaged the ambiance of a romantic dinner."

  • "I came the first time 20 years ago and it is still so romantic to spend some time in the garden. It is also the best scenic view of LA. 180 degree view from Hollywood sign to the Ocean, just perfect! I live back in Switzerland, near Geneva and come to LA twice a year with a must stop at the Moutain Palace, Yamashiro."

  • "I'm struck by the level of service at Yamashiro's. From the valet, to the host/hostesses and the servers. Always top notched and only surpassed by the delicious food! Definitely a 20% (tip) establishment!"

  • "Everything about the experience was good, not great. The waiter was a little busy and I had to remind him to tell us about the specials, but the other waitstaff was very attentive. The food was good, just not exceptional. The view was very good and it seemed there were not too many seats that could not get a part of the view. After paying $40 for a dish, it seemed strange to still have to pay $8 for parking - but I guess that is an L.A. thing that natives are used to - I would have thought parking would be free and then I would have tipped the valet nicely; they did have their own parking spaces afterall."

  • "Everything was good. I just personally appreciate it if the food is brought out by someone other than the waiter that the waiter comes and check to see if the order is correct. In this case the waiter didn’t and in fact the food was not – my mistake not theirs – and I was going to place another order (paying for the other disk of course). But other than that everything was really good."

  • "It would have been nice if the waiters knew more about gluten free options. They thought some of the items were gluten free. We had to change our order three times because it wasn't gluten free. My husband has a high allergy to gluten."

  • "I've never been to a restaurant as fancy as Yamashiro. I wanted to go some place classy for my girlfriend's birthday and Yamashiro was awesome or that."

  • "We had a group of 11. Our waiter was unbelievable awful. The prices are not cheap at yamishiro so when you are paying an average of $40-$50 per entree you expect a certain level of service. Everything was extremely slow so we ended up being there for about 2.5 hours. During that time I personally only received 2 cocktails in the whole time we were there. The worst part was that after dinner we waited 15 minutes just to receive dessert menus. At that time half of our party left because they were so frustrated. While the other half waited an additional 10 minutes to try and order dessert. At that time the waiter had not come back so I went to the manager and just asked for the bill. This was a very unfortunate event at Yamashiro."

  • "Amazing food wigh a killer view. The only downfall was that the tables and chairs have seen better days. It downplays the atmosphere and gret cuisine."

  • "So my boyfriend and I were really excited to try out this restaurant, it seriously want not anything what we expected. At first we had to wait while we had a reservation then got the littlest table you can imagine. So I went back up front to get another table instead, when we got there we wait for 10 minutes before a waiter came to greet us and all he said was "you ready" no welcome introduction or anything. The only time I saw my waiter was in the very beginning and when he came to deliver the check. The food was alright, I was expecting the food not to be so fishy, and lemony. I guess you can say I was really disappointed because we had such a wonderful day and we thought going here would make it even better. oh well. But the host"

  • "We were celebrating a "50" birthday celebration and chose Yamashiro because it had been about 10 years since we had been there. We remembered it as a very special place with great food! We were not disappointed. The black cod with wasabi mashed potatoes were just scrumptious! The asian ribs were great as well. Service was prompt and courteous! Definitely a place to keep in mind to visit sooner rather than later. Definitely a must visit!"

  • "Overall a good experience. A bit pricey. The mango cocktail with heat, had zero heat. Server never inquired about our cocktail satisfaction, he did ask how we liked our food though. Definitely try the cerviche it was yummy."

  • "On our last visit we ordered the same dishes as on a prior visit. They were good but not over-the-top amazing like our last few visits. I really hope that the usual chef was just out for the night because Yamashiro is one of our favs! One exception- the Spicy Tuna Roll was to die for as usual!"

  • "I haven't been to Yamashiro in over 10 years and I was worried that my memory may not serve me well when recalling past experiences at this historic restaurant. My concern was unfounded and me and my party had a delightful dining experience at Yamashiro. Scott, our server was most friendly, helpful and accommodating. I'm vegan and Scott was able to recommend from the menu as well as order off-menu for me as well. The food is above average but it's really all about the whole experience. The ambiance is romantic and comfortable whether you dine in the Japanese garden or in the dining room but the stellar views from the dining room is what makes this place special. You owe it to yourself to visit Yamashiro at least once in your life."

  • "We have enjoyed Yamashiro's for the second time now, and it was wonderful. Our server was excellent and very thorough and explained everything in detail, offering excellent suggestions for our dinners and appetizers. At first we were discouraged by the table selection, (too close to the exit and partial view of the entrance at the stairs. Since we have only dined here on special occasions, we wanted something more scenic.), but it turned out nicely as we were uninterrupted by patrons either being seated or leaving the restaurant and we were able to enjoy our own conversations without difficulty. We brought a cake in celebration and our server stored it for us and brought it out with birthday candles. It was lovely-food was excellent!"

  • "We went to Yamashiro's in hopes of having a view of the city so that we could enjoy watching fireworks throughout the city on the 4th of July. We mentioned that to the hostess, but still ended up in the center courtyard, where we only had a view of the beautiful Japanese garden and Koi pond. We ended up skipping dessert so that we could walk out to the front of the restaurant to watch fireworks. The food and service were excellent, as always!"

  • "We came here on July 4th to see the fireworks over Los Angeles, and had our dinner around 7:30. We came here for dinner, but changed to starters of sushi instead. The crunchy roll was the best, along with the black forbidden rice (formerly Darth Vader) which has a rich taste. If you like sushi slightly spicy, the spicy lobster is the way to go, with a taste of pork and lobster and mild sauce. I like fish and the fresher the better. I had the truffle hamachi, which is one of the best pieces of fish I've had in a long time. For dessert, I would recommend the strawberry doughnuts, which has a dipping sauce and ice cream."

  • "It's a must visit restaurant, either for the view or the environment. The view of LA is amazing. The surrounding is full with greenery. The restaurant designs is unique. There is even a small open air garden inside the restaurant. The japanese culture was clearly reflection on the building itself and the surrounding. Food is ok."
