Diner Reviews
  • "So my boyfriend and I were really excited to try out this restaurant, it seriously want not anything what we expected. At first we had to wait while we had a reservation then got the littlest table you can imagine. So I went back up front to get another table instead, when we got there we wait for 10 minutes before a waiter came to greet us and all he said was "you ready" no welcome introduction or anything. The only time I saw my waiter was in the very beginning and when he came to deliver the check. The food was alright, I was expecting the food not to be so fishy, and lemony. I guess you can say I was really disappointed because we had such a wonderful day and we thought going here would make it even better. oh well. But the host"

  • "I haven't been to Yamashiro in over 10 years and I was worried that my memory may not serve me well when recalling past experiences at this historic restaurant. My concern was unfounded and me and my party had a delightful dining experience at Yamashiro. Scott, our server was most friendly, helpful and accommodating. I'm vegan and Scott was able to recommend from the menu as well as order off-menu for me as well. The food is above average but it's really all about the whole experience. The ambiance is romantic and comfortable whether you dine in the Japanese garden or in the dining room but the stellar views from the dining room is what makes this place special. You owe it to yourself to visit Yamashiro at least once in your life."

  • "We were celebrating a "50" birthday celebration and chose Yamashiro because it had been about 10 years since we had been there. We remembered it as a very special place with great food! We were not disappointed. The black cod with wasabi mashed potatoes were just scrumptious! The asian ribs were great as well. Service was prompt and courteous! Definitely a place to keep in mind to visit sooner rather than later. Definitely a must visit!"

  • "Food is over priced and over cooked. Service was not good either."

  • "Overall a good experience. A bit pricey. The mango cocktail with heat, had zero heat. Server never inquired about our cocktail satisfaction, he did ask how we liked our food though. Definitely try the cerviche it was yummy."

  • "I took my girlfriend here for our one year anniversary, the view was a wonderful addition to the excellent food."

  • "We have enjoyed Yamashiro's for the second time now, and it was wonderful. Our server was excellent and very thorough and explained everything in detail, offering excellent suggestions for our dinners and appetizers. At first we were discouraged by the table selection, (too close to the exit and partial view of the entrance at the stairs. Since we have only dined here on special occasions, we wanted something more scenic.), but it turned out nicely as we were uninterrupted by patrons either being seated or leaving the restaurant and we were able to enjoy our own conversations without difficulty. We brought a cake in celebration and our server stored it for us and brought it out with birthday candles. It was lovely-food was excellent!"

  • "On our last visit we ordered the same dishes as on a prior visit. They were good but not over-the-top amazing like our last few visits. I really hope that the usual chef was just out for the night because Yamashiro is one of our favs! One exception- the Spicy Tuna Roll was to die for as usual!"

  • "My wife and I celebrated her birthday at Yamashiro's this past Saturday and had a great time. Everything was perfect- the view, the food, the service. We would go back again and will certainly recommend this fantastic find to others. Thanks for a memorable evening!"

  • "We went to Yamashiro's in hopes of having a view of the city so that we could enjoy watching fireworks throughout the city on the 4th of July. We mentioned that to the hostess, but still ended up in the center courtyard, where we only had a view of the beautiful Japanese garden and Koi pond. We ended up skipping dessert so that we could walk out to the front of the restaurant to watch fireworks. The food and service were excellent, as always!"

  • "The place has a beautiful view. I would not eat there in the future. Managment should consider changing its menu and chef. Other than the food, everything else was great."

  • "We came here on July 4th to see the fireworks over Los Angeles, and had our dinner around 7:30. We came here for dinner, but changed to starters of sushi instead. The crunchy roll was the best, along with the black forbidden rice (formerly Darth Vader) which has a rich taste. If you like sushi slightly spicy, the spicy lobster is the way to go, with a taste of pork and lobster and mild sauce. I like fish and the fresher the better. I had the truffle hamachi, which is one of the best pieces of fish I've had in a long time. For dessert, I would recommend the strawberry doughnuts, which has a dipping sauce and ice cream."

  • "It's a must visit restaurant, either for the view or the environment. The view of LA is amazing. The surrounding is full with greenery. The restaurant designs is unique. There is even a small open air garden inside the restaurant. The japanese culture was clearly reflection on the building itself and the surrounding. Food is ok."

  • "This is my first time visited here for the evening dinner for special occasion. It was very nice view of greater Los Angeles, it's must be better at night time. We ordered the filet mignon carpaccio for daily special appetizer and Sushi set, Shoyu Glazed Black Cod dish and desert for Strawberry Filled Doughnuts. It was costly for us to spend dinner like these restaurant, however you should visit if you never been come to this restaurant, you will be liked here."

  • "This place is worth one visit for the ambiance and view. The food and service are nothing to rave about: The menu is small, the food is average and the service can be slow. The lighting is supposed to be moody but I found it just dark. Despite all its a popular place at night as the City lights are quite spectacular. Definitely request a city-light-view."

  • "Had a great evening with my husband and daughter. Food was delicious and the view was amazing. I hadn't been to this restaurant in 20 years and a few things had changed-no hot white towels before the meal and no one dressed in traditional costumes. We missed those touches. It added to the experience. This is why I didn't give them a 5 star for ambiance. Overall it was a beautiful night."

  • "I've been to Yamashiro a number of times over the years. But, it had been a good five plus years since my last visit. It's every bit as great as I remember. I brought my wife here for her birthday this past weekend, and she absolutely loved it! As many know, it's a gorgeous location, and the food is delicious. My wife had lamb chops (a special that evening) and I had the American Wangyu Steak. We had crab cakes and Asia BBQ short ribs for appetizers. Every part of our meal was delectable!"

  • "Yamishiro's will always continue to grow and give you a slice of Japan to visit. It's the perfect place to bring a special someone, or just to get up and away from the city, just to take in great sushi and a glass of Burgundy... I highly recommend it."

  • "Wonderful, exceptional view of LA. Would come back. Great place for special occaisons or to bring visitors. Food was very good, rolls were very good with creative differences from the usual. Sushi was expensive at $4.50 each. Cooked entrees, looked good but large, would try next time. Service was excellent, friendly but hoping for a more Japanese ambiance. Restaurant is a little dated but a pleasant surprise that the food was very good given other reviews. A small pretty garden on the hillside, great for photos. Only valet parking available at $8. Interesting drive up."

  • "The food was amazing. I was a little skeptical at first because it's only valet parking but it was well worth it. The service was excellent. The wait staff is very attentive but not so overbearing as to ruin any kind of special occasion."

  • "Thank you for getting us a table near the window. My friends loved it and want to return. Thankfully the noise level was fine on Tuesday night. The ambiance is historic and elegant, so don't forget those of us who come to the Yamashiro for a fine dining experience, not for a noisy club. We can get that elsewhere. The Yamashiro is unique."

Well I made the right decision in coming back. The food was fantastic. My entree was amazing. My server was very attentive and gave great recommendations. I was very happy. Can't wait to go back."

  • "Requested on Open Table booking for table with view and what a view it was. Great views, food, wine list and ambience. Cocktails for starters at the bar with view, before being seated for dinner on lower tier with view. Higly recommend the white truffle sushi for starters. Service was very attentive and providing recommendations without being pushy. Food served with good timimg. Very romantic setting, with a great selection on the menu. Make sure you leave room for Dessert SushiEnclosed with large glass windows. Highly recommend."
