A word from Yama
Nestled in the Vail Village, this sophisticated sushi and Japenese restaurant offers an intimate and fun dining experience. With a menu that focuses on fresh fish and a variety of specialty cocktails, this surprisingly chic restaurant fulfills the needs of the health conscious and fun-seeking individuals, and fits right into Vail’s exceptional nightlife.

Yama's Japanese-born chef Ted Minami's traditional approach to the artistry of Japanese cuisine expertly compliments wild child, chef Chris Aycock's innovative techniques. This unique blend satisfies the most discriminating palate and is sure to delight, and is further expressed by the smart ambiance and crimson lit dining room. While patrons dine to the sounds of acid jazz, glances of the Rocky Mountains and conversations about the day's snow adventures can be a perfect reminder of the fact that they are dining in one of the most picturesque ski town's in the world.

  • A little too quiet...

We have eaten at Yama for a few years now, during our annual trip to the Vail/Beaver Creek area. In the past the place has been hopping and the food has been great. This year it was strangely quiet. So quiet in fact, that we were the only table in the place from 5:30-7:30 on a Thursday night. That lends itself to quick service, which was good, but still a little weird. The sushi was good, though not as good as we've had in the past. The Shiso roll was outstanding, very unique flavors and something different than I've ever had at a sushi restaurant. Everything else was fresh, but not memorable. Overall everything was fine, but the atmosphere and food weren't as impressive as in past years.

  • NOT WORTH THE PRICE

My daughter and I went here for dinner the other night as we were craving sushi. When we looked at the menu we were astounded by the price of the majority of items on the menu. A pretty basic sushi roll was over $20. I think they averaged around $25 each and the least expensive one was about $18 (California Roll - not really sushi). I figured at that price the rolls would be amazing and mind blowing. Well, we ordered a few items and they were quite pretty, but they tasted bland and without any decent flavors. I guess you pay for the presentation and not the taste. Needless to say our minds were NOT blown and we left very disappointed. :-(

We really enjoyed our evening here. The edamame was really good, as was the sashimi, vegetables tempura & the ahi tuna. All tasted very fresh and the presentations were beautiful, especially the hearts of palm tomoato salad. The only problem was the wine selection. I wanted a chardonnay & they only have two by the glass. The unoaked wine was not to our liking so opted for the second choice which was $22 a glass! That's high even for Vail prices. There are many wines they could stock that would not have to be that expensive by the glass. When we arrived only 2 tables were filled & it was very pleasant but about 1/2 hour later the entire restaurant was filled (there are only 8 tables and 10 barstools) and it was very noisy.

This was our second visit to Yama. Sushi has been outstanding both times. If off-season last time they had a happy hour with drinks and sushi that was very cost beneficial. Waitress recommended the Tai special sushi, which was amazing. Intimate location and dining area, but worth it.

Kelsey was extremely pleasant serving us and explaining what we were trying. I would recommend this to anyone, whether you are an experienced sushi fan, or experiencing it for the first time.

We ordered rolls that we had never had before and were very happy. Food was great. Unfortunately we had to scream at each other to converse. Yama seems to be designed to reflect as much sound as possible. We could hear parts of conversations taking place across the room. When a server dropped a cup the noise reverberated around the room. Go for the food. Take ear plugs. Sit next to each other as opposed to across from each other if you want to talk.

We were seated promptly and the service was good. However the quality of the food was mediocre at best. The chicken appetizer was just a fancy chicken tenders dish that was too dry. The other appetizer we tried was a rock shrimp dish that had too much batter and very small shrimp. The sushi rolls were better. Overall, we weren't impressed.

I just love Yama, for the sushi, for the drinks, for the service! I'm a vegetarian, and the rolls are so unique and so delicious. My hubby is a carnivore, and he thought the fish was fresh and enjoyed the Randy Roll in honor of the Trailer Park Boys :). The service is so attentive, but not in your face. Be sure and order the Painkiller to start after a long day on the slopes. We'll be back !!!

This is the third year I have eaten at Yama Sushi - the food is great, the drinks are creative. The first year it seemed like a nice quiet hole in the wall. Went on referral from a local that works at 2 other high end Vail Restaurants. Small, but lively spot with excellent sushi, with more than adequate non-sushi options. Some unique rolls to go alone with a wide variety of fish. Soup also very good. Fun selection of cocktails and far eastern beers brought in a great crowd of both locals and visitors. Look forward to enjoying this restaurant again soon.

who would think you would find great sushi in the Rockies? Fresh, delicious, innovative. But the prices! It's Vail where all the restaurants are outrageous. But this is the most expensive of all. Little confusion on the time of our reservation as I made it for 5:30pm and they actually did not start serving until 6pm. Very nice about letting us be seated, but we did have to wait.
