A word from Yakitori Tori Shin
Tori Shin is Not your ordinary grilled chicken definitely not your usual Japanese restaurant. Bincho-tan(charcoal) yakitori, organic chicken, fine sake and sho-chu. In NewYork, there are a growing number of Yakitori restaurants, but Tori Shin stays true to it's roots, and true to the art. Tori Shin is the only bonafide yakitoriya (chicken griller) with over 40 different unique chicken skewers offered. And Tori Shin remains the only yakitoriya directly linked to a highly-respected, and successful yakitoriya in Tokyo, Japan.
We are proud and grateful of compliments from our Japanese patrons as being true-to style of the Tokyo food culture scene, but our dream was to share this Tokyo experience with others. Since the beginning, our mission was to promote the most authentic, Tokyo stile yakitori experience, using the highest quality ingredients, hence the name Tori Shin: True chicken. Seatings are mainly at the counter, with cook performances.

Diner Reviews
  • "I was certainly satisfied with their high hospitality in Japanese."

  • "The omakase menu is at a great price. The chefs are very accommodating to your likes/ dislikes and you can pretty much pick whatever you want. They will also feed you until you're completely full. It's a fun experience and prefect for dates."

  • "Requirement to do omakase to get any of the special skewers is annoying. Most things ran out by 9pm."

  • "This was a truly remarkable dining experience for those who really enjoy food and dining out! The service is impeccable and the food is expertly prepared. The whole experience (and it is an experience, not just a meal) is fantastic! They have a great sake list, wine list and beer list are there, but not as extensive."

  • "Yakitoti Tori Shin is a wonderful experience for adventurous foodies. The service - from the minute we walked in the door - was warm, welcoming, attentive, and very sincere. The entire staff genuinely cares about making your dining experience special. The food was unlike any I'd ever had, and each dish they serve is a little piece of art in both taste and presentation. We sat at the bar - as opposed to the handful of small tables they have near the window - and it was so fun to watch the chefs prepare each individual dish with such attention. I would highly recommend sitting at the bar. Which means this restaurant isn't good for more than 2 people - I wouldn't go with groups.Overall it was a fun experience with great food and great service."

  • "Simply one of the best Japanese restaurants in the city."
    Dined on 3/19/2014
  • "The service was prompt and informative; the waiter gave a brief introduction of each menu item with a cordial and accommodating manner. The food was excellent and the serving portions were just right. The place is small, so I wouldn't recommend it for a large party, but it is perfect for a couple or small group. I would definitely come back and recommend it to other prospective diners."

  • "Seated at counter for the Chef's Yakitori Omakase (US$55/p).Some hits and misses, overall an excellent experience but largely an average meal. unlike at a sushi restaurant, the flow of the meal is unclear. COURSE [bad/good/excellent]: Deep-fried broccoli/tofu-spinach-salad/yellow-beans-and-carrot [good]; Chicken liver yakitori [excellent]; grilled scallop appetizer [side order, excellent]; chicken (whole)hearts [excellent]; chicken tenderloin [excellent]; grilled asparagus [excellent]; grilled potato [good]; "special skewer roast" probably "oyster" [excellent]; umami-dashi-jelly [bad]; pork-belly [excellent]; special mix chicken/duck [average]; broiled-sea-urchin-with-garlic [side-order, not worth it]; chicken skin [bad]"

  • "Usually I'm very happy with their service...unfortunately this night, they served all the food practically at once... and took away my favorite dish before I was finished with it. Hopefully it was just a one time thing...and not a sign of decline in their quality of service."
    Dined on 3/2/2014
  • "We ordered several skewers and appetizers. Food was ok. Not sure why this restaurant has 1 Michelin star."
    Dined on 2/22/2014
  • "Absolutely fantastic food, but you need to survive from the starve. We ordered the menu and the 10 skewers set, it took them 2 hours to serve all of the food, so averagely we waited 10-15 minutes to get one skewer for each person! We literally were starving.... But I have to say, the food is beyond great. The chicken oyster and heart are my favorite so far, and the egg and chicken rice, I want to have a second bowl at the end!"
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "The yakitori is very good. I recommend ordering the omakase if not for the different selection of yakitori not available a la carte, then because the food will arrive more promptly and you and your dinner partner will have something at the same time, instead of one skewer at a time, which is awkward. The waiter might have given us some guidance! The room is small - be prepared to be squished! The wait staff is busy and maybe overly burdened. When I ordered tea, it arrived iced in the middle of winter I asked the waiter for hot tea. She obliged though begrudging and annoyed."

  • "Tori Shin is NOT a 'hangout with your buds, drink beer and eat inexpensive yakitori' type of place like Yakitori East. It is a high-end restaurant, with prices to match, which offers the best yakitori you can find in New York. The omakase (tasting) menu is the way to go for most people. It offers a range of meats, vegetables and fish prepared in a few different ways - all of which are spectacular. Among Japanese business people stationed in the U.S. that I do business with, this is the restaurant they all look forward to eating at when visiting NYC. While most of the clientele will be Japanese, Americans need not worry - the staff will make sure that you have an amazing experience."

  • "We started going to Yakitori Tori Shin within the last year and were hooked immediately! Food is simple, healthy and consistently excellent! We enjoy the very friendly and accomodating service by ALL of the staff. Although we live in the neighborhood, this is a magnet for diners from all over, and it is truly a fun experience to sit at the counter and watch the chefs at work on the open grills. Due to postage-stamp size, it is lively/energetic/bustling, yet seating arrangement allows for comfortable quiet conversation."

  • "Dangerous left corner counter...burning coal splasing."
    Dined on 1/16/2014
  • "Considering the restaurant has a michelin star, was very surprised at the food quality. Most meat, including several chicken skewers was dry and overcooked. We did the chef's omakase menu. After explaining to the waitress that we had no issues with strange or exotic foods, we were given a selection of very plain, boring, and safe skewers. Would not come back."
    Dined on 12/29/2013
  • "The food is very tasty, but also very rich. If you do the omakase you'll try almost every part of the chicken from ribs to liver to heart. If you're a fan of dark meat and rich, grilled chicken flavors make yourself a reservation."
    Dined on 12/31/2013
  • "Still had to wait 30-40 minutes w/ my open table reservation b/c the restaurant mismanaged their time allotment. The food is good as always but somehow i feel there is a language barrier/ miscommunication with the servers. my omakase meal was tagged on additional fees. Won't be coming back anytime soon"

  • "Great time! This is the real deal. Solid from reception to finish."
    Dined on 12/15/2013
  • "Great place if you like Yakitori. The place is a bit small in size so definitely get a reservation in advance, but the food is great here and the $55 Omakase menu is a deal."

  • "Despite a reservation on Open Table and a phone confirmation, they still made us wait 30 minutes for our table. They apparently overbooked the tables and took many walk-ins. Nevertheless, the food is very good."
    Dined on 12/12/2013
  • "This place is fantastic. It is a truly authentic Yakitori spot. The staff is Japanese, half the clientele is Japanese. The food is great, and the sake list is too."
    Dined on 12/7/2013
  • "Our third trip to this restaurant and as usual the food was great -- well seasoned, well cooked yakitori. Service was terrible however....the female server appeared to be in a daze, forgetting our drinks, forgetting to take our order, not checking on us for very long stretches. The poor service ruined an otherwise very good meal."
    Dined on 12/6/2013
  • "This is my go to spot! The food is great, the Sake recommendations are spot on. The Servers and Chefs are so friendly. A trip to New York is mot complete without Tori Shin."
    Dined on 12/1/2013
  • "The food is impeccable but the service is lacking."
    Dined on 11/22/2013
  • "The omakase did not blow me away. It wasn't terrible by any means, but most of the food items were just good, not outstanding. The seasonal dish (fried chicken and yuzu) and the vegetables (mushrooms and gingko nuts) were scrumptious, but the yakitori was just okay. I didn't really enjoy the liver and gizzard (but I sort of expected that). However the breast and thigh yakitori is just underwhelming and dry. Overall I liked my last visit (where I ordered a la carte) much better. The meatballs were really good, as were the fried dishes. Service, like in most japanese restaurants, is exemplary. Overall, I would still recommend Yakitori Tori Shin, but if you want to avoid eating chicken gizzard, skip the omakase."

  • "We've lived in the neighborhood for many years, but had never stopped into Yakitori Tori Shin until several months ago and were surprised at what a great spot was so close by. Food is simple, fresh and excellent, and sitting at the counter is a lot of fun. We were so taken with the experience, including the extremely solicitous and friendly staff, that we have become regulars and enjoy going as often as we can."

  • "Love this restaurant. Intimate space, friendly and attentive service, and exquisite food. Thank you!"
    Dined on 11/8/2013
  • "Food was delicious. Waiter was polite. However, the dining experience was marred by the fact that we felt rushed to finish our meal and did not realise that the restaurant took another reservation on our table 90 minutes after our reservation time. Hardly enough time to enjoy the food given that it was omakase. Don't think this is the service standard of a 1 Michelin star restaurant."
    Dined on 11/7/2013
  • "Creative meticulously prepared delicious Omekase menu . Attentive kind & professional service"
    Dined on 11/7/2013
  • "The food is delicious. My only complaint is that my waitress could barely speak English. I wouldn't always have an issue with this, but when being served obscure parts of a chicken, it would be nice to understand what it is you're eating. We spent 5 minutes going back and forth to determine that she was serving us the Main Artery."

  • "Enjoyed yaki tori. There was no raw egg on special oyako-don. Sigh."
    Dined on 11/2/2013
  • "A great authentic yakitori spot frequented by the Japanese ex-pat community, is reminiscent of a crowded yakitori bar in Tokyo. Sitting in front of Ikeda-san is a treat as grill to mouth time is shortened to enjoy the ultimate flavor of charcoal and heat. Just a word of caution, avoid later seatings in the evening as their farm fresh ingredients and exotic parts run out fast. I was very disappointed that I could not try the liver on my recent visit but chicken tail (bonjiri) and chicken wing (teba) definitely made up for it."
    Dined on 10/26/2013
  • "Definitely the best skewers I've ever eaten - I even managed to understand what some of them were (chef demonstrating position of oyster by pretending to be chicken was my favourite bit). However, I had a booking for 8.30pm and there were seats available when I arrived, but I had to hang around standing up in the doorway for over 30 mins before someone decided it was time to seat me. Nobody asked if I had a booking, so I had to insist on giving them my name so they could confirm. Once seated, service was friendly and generally good .... but nothing like Michelin star level service. Food v good, but didn't amaze me ... atmosphere of the place, and watching chefs do their thing made the evening really enjoyable."

  • "Really good yakitori. Menu was a bit more limited than some of the other places in town, but I'll trade that for getting to make a reservation and not having to wait an hour! Good sake as well."
