A word from Yakitori Tori Shin
Tori Shin is Not your ordinary grilled chicken definitely not your usual Japanese restaurant. Bincho-tan(charcoal) yakitori, organic chicken, fine sake and sho-chu. In NewYork, there are a growing number of Yakitori restaurants, but Tori Shin stays true to it's roots, and true to the art. Tori Shin is the only bonafide yakitoriya (chicken griller) with over 40 different unique chicken skewers offered. And Tori Shin remains the only yakitoriya directly linked to a highly-respected, and successful yakitoriya in Tokyo, Japan.
We are proud and grateful of compliments from our Japanese patrons as being true-to style of the Tokyo food culture scene, but our dream was to share this Tokyo experience with others. Since the beginning, our mission was to promote the most authentic, Tokyo stile yakitori experience, using the highest quality ingredients, hence the name Tori Shin: True chicken. Seatings are mainly at the counter, with cook performances.

The entire staff genuinely cares about making your dining experience special. The food was unlike any I'd ever had, and each dish they serve is a little piece of art in both taste and presentation. We sat at the bar - as opposed to the handful of small tables they have near the window - and it was so fun to watch the chefs prepare each individual dish with such attention. I would highly recommend sitting at the bar. Which means this restaurant isn't good for more than 2 people - I wouldn't go with groups.Overall it was a fun experience with great food and great service."

The food was excellent and the serving portions were just right. The place is small, so I wouldn't recommend it for a large party, but it is perfect for a couple or small group.   • "Absolutely fantastic food, but you need to survive from the starve. We ordered the menu and the 10 skewers set, it took them 2 hours to serve all of the food, so averagely we waited 10-15 minutes to get one skewer for each person! We literally were starving.... But I have to say, the food is beyond great. The chicken oyster and heart are my favorite so far, and the egg and chicken rice, I want to have a second bowl at the end!"

I recommend ordering the omakase if not for the different selection of yakitori not available a la carte, then because the food will arrive more promptly and you and your dinner partner will have something at the same time, instead of one skewer at a time, which is awkward. The waiter might have given us some guidance! The room is small - be prepared to be squished! The wait staff is busy and maybe overly burdened. When I ordered tea, it arrived iced in the middle of winter I asked the waiter for hot tea. She obliged though begrudging and annoyed."

It is a high-end restaurant, with prices to match, which offers the best yakitori you can find in New York. The omakase (tasting) menu is the way to go for most people. It offers a range of meats, vegetables and fish prepared in a few different ways - all of which are spectacular. Among Japanese business people stationed in the U.S. that I do business with, this is the restaurant they all look forward to eating at when visiting NYC. While most of the clientele will be Japanese, Americans need not worry - the staff will make sure that you have an amazing experience."

We enjoy the very friendly and accomodating service by ALL of the staff. Although we live in the neighborhood, this is a magnet for diners from all over, and it is truly a fun experience to sit at the counter and watch the chefs at work on the open grills. Due to postage-stamp size, it is lively/energetic/bustling, yet seating arrangement allows for comfortable quiet conversation."

  • "The omakase did not blow me away. It wasn't terrible by any means, but most of the food items were just good, not outstanding. The seasonal dish (fried chicken and yuzu) and the vegetables (mushrooms and gingko nuts) were scrumptious, but the yakitori was just okay. I didn't really enjoy the liver and gizzard (but I sort of expected that). However the breast and thigh yakitori is just underwhelming and dry. Overall I liked my last visit (where I ordered a la carte) much better. The meatballs were really good, as were the fried dishes. Service, like in most japanese restaurants, is exemplary. Overall, I would still recommend Yakitori Tori Shin, but if you want to avoid eating chicken gizzard, skip the omakase."

  • "A great authentic yakitori spot frequented by the Japanese ex-pat community, is reminiscent of a crowded yakitori bar in Tokyo. Sitting in front of Ikeda-san is a treat as grill to mouth time is shortened to enjoy the ultimate flavor of charcoal and heat. Just a word of caution, avoid later seatings in the evening as their farm fresh ingredients and exotic parts run out fast. I was very disappointed that I could not try the liver on my recent visit but chicken tail (bonjiri) and chicken wing (teba) definitely made up for it."

  • "Definitely the best skewers I've ever eaten - I even managed to understand what some of them were (chef demonstrating position of oyster by pretending to be chicken was my favourite bit). However, I had a booking for 8.30pm and there were seats available when I arrived, but I had to hang around standing up in the doorway for over 30 mins before someone decided it was time to seat me. Nobody asked if I had a booking, so I had to insist on giving them my name so they could confirm. Once seated, service was friendly and generally good .... but nothing like Michelin star level service. Food v good, but didn't amaze me ... atmosphere of the place, and watching chefs do their thing made the evening really enjoyable."
