Diner Reviews
  • "Loved being able to make my own guac, interesting twist on fried chicken and delicious cornbrea"

  • "High quality mexican food - everything was perfect. Short rib tamale was just right. My fiance loved the chili relleno. I was addicted to the Red Sangria! Good for special occasions as it's a bit pricier than the average mexican restaturant but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for and it was worth it."

  • "The 'make your own" guacamole is awesome. We all had different entree's (Swordfish, vegetarian entree, steak & shrimp) and everyone was very happy with their meal of choice. My only complaint is my swordfish was a bit oversalted for my liking (and I love salt!). Will definitely go back when I'm in the city again. very tasty. The chips are to die for..."

  • "Food was good however a little over priced for the portion size. Would eat there again if I were in the neighborhood however would not make a special trip."

  • "If you are looking for a great authentic Mexican meal, Xochitl is the place. The quality of food was great. Being able to customize your guacamole is great feature."

  • "I enjoyed the Four Course Patron pairing and it was fantastic! The food was fresh and very tasty!"

  • "This is a really nice restaurant, but the ambiance doesn't fit the decor. From the look of the place you would think it was more upscale/romantic; however, it was noisy and fast paced with a feel of a bar. The food and drinks were very great, so we would defiantly go back."

  • "This neighborhood gem is the perfect place to meet up with great friends for the best Margaritas in Philadelphia. Our friends from California didn't think they would have Mexican food in our city that was of the caliber of their home state....they said they were surprised and impressed. The guacamole was the beginning of an amazing meal and a memorable evening. Thank you Xochitl!"

  • "Guacamole is outstanding and every margarita is better and more interesting than the next. It is always a good time for our gang!"

  • "Great food as well as friendly wait staff. If you'd like an education on tequila this is the place for you."

  • "Amazing food and the perfect way to spend a night out, good food and great service, an all around good time."

  • "We're from out of town, and love Tex-mex, Mexican, etc. Xochitl was a great mix of familiar standards, but with enough of a twist to make foodies happy. The margaritas are wonderful."
    Dined on 3/8/2014
  • "Great guacamole! Great margarita! Everything else we got was just average to below average. I would go back for the guacamole and margarita and maybe try another appetizer. Also, it's in a tough area to find parking, so we paid a lot to park in the garage. We were about 15-20 minutes late for our reservation and they called to see where we were, which I would be fine with if there was a line at the door, but we showed up a couple minutes later to find plenty of seating was still available.0"

  • "Be prepared to study tequila during your meal. Never knew there was so much to learn about tequila. Wow! Server was very helpful and informative. The drinks were great. The make-your-own tacos were amazing, as was the customizable guacamole appetizer. Prices were very reasonable. Service was fast and friendly. Highly recommended!"

  • "This is a nice find from Open Table. Situated in the Society Hill area of Philadelphia just 2 blocks from South Street, this is a small fronted neighborhood gem. The food was excellent, especially the freshly made guacamole that you can customize with several ingredients, delicious! There are nice choices on the menu that will fit every taste for Mexican/Southwestern fare. I had the Flat Iron Steak that was cooked perfectly, the grilled cactus was fantastic. My wife had the stuffed pepper and she was very pleased. The only negative was the lack of the popular domestic beers. Sangria was good! Situated in a beautiful neighborhood."

  • "really flavorful food, great ambiance and service, and decent prices. there's so many awesome places to try in philly, I rarely visit a place multiple times, but this one will be on my list to return to."

  • "I had always wanted to eat here. We were very pleased with the amount and quality of the food. Especially liked the design-your-own guacamole. Everything was delicious. There was a snowstorm, so it wasn,t very crowded, but our waitress was delightful and attentive. Would definitely recommend it."

  • "Great food-loved the guacamole, ceviche, and chicken. Only complaint is that the wait staff was really loud - louder than any of the patrons. It was pretty disruptive to conversations with companions. Otherwise, the place was great, and we'll be back!"

  • "We had high hopes for this experience based upon the on-line reviews. Our experience started out strained, when we arrived and where the first diners for the evening, but were told we could only sit at one of two undesirable tables even though we had a confirmed reservation. Their margarita's were good, but their guacamole was only average. Their food was well presented, but none of it was hot; it seemed that it waited in the window to be served for too long. The side dish of corn was outstanding. The mango tres leche cake was also outstanding. The meal was expensive and overpriced even when you account for the bar portion of the total check. The manager was personable, and engaging."

  • "I went to Xochitl on a Saturday night last minute with my parents; we had no problem getting a reservation. I had been before but they had not. We did a "make your own" guacamole with crab which was outstanding, queso fundido, and the mushroom flat bread to start. In hind sight it was way too much food to start with for three people but it was so delicious I didn't mind being full before my main entree came. For my main entree I got the steak rare; it was cooked perfectly. My father got the red snapper which was served with black beans and chorizo which was incredible; I never would have thought fish and chorizo would pare so nicely together. My stepmom (who is an extremely picky eater) got the shrimp with the avocado salad and loved it."

  • "Tequila, cocktails and custom guac were great. The food (couple different types of tacos) was only okay but still a good experience."
    Dined on 2/7/2014
  • "Fantastic experience after a really hard day! The custom made guac was a big hit along with pretty much perfect margaritas. Excellent service throughout the meal. Definitely leave room for dessert!"

  • "I went to xochitl for restaurant week, and I have to say the food was amazing! We had chips and guac for the table first and wow it was the best guac I ever had. My mother and I lovedddd the guac and the chips were nice and warm. It was perfect. Next I had the chicken tortilla soup which was good. My entree was the swordfish veracruz... And WOW it was so delicious and the swordfish was cooked PERFECTLY.. It was amazing. For my dessert I had the flan which was also great. Oh and the margaritas... So good and strong! They were perfect. Overall everything was great. Its a small place though so it was a little tight, but other than that I have no complaints. That will not be my last time going to xochitl."

  • "The food here was adequate, but not great. If you're looking for something to eat and not that particular about fine cuisine, then I would go. I would not go out of my way to go back, however. I can not speak to their wide and varied tequilas (they had two pages of them)."

  • "We had a great dinner and some nice drinks, food was excellent. wouldn't mind being seated on the upstairs floor next time rather than the basement. However this is a trendy little place that stands out with good service and food in a great location."

  • "Took a date here for restaurant week and it was a big hit. You get to customize your guacamole order, which was fun. We were pleased with each course. I'll go back. The only negative was that we had a bit of a wait for our table, but the staff was very apologetic and handled it well."

  • "Xochitl is in a great location. It's a small restaurant but they were great about have a 10 person reservation. The food was really good-the guacamole was delicious. We did restaurant week, so my only complaint is that they didn't have great main dish options that were vegetarian. My friends seemed to really enjoy their meat dishes. The waiter was very attentive and was helpful in describing the dishes."

  • "Went here for restaurant week - four course meal was excellent! The best guacamole I've ever had. Enjoyed the stuffed pepper entree as well. Dessert was delicious, especially the tres leches cake. The service was fine, but we felt rushed as they tried to remove plates that we weren't finished with multiple times. It dampened the experience a bit, but we would definitely return there again."

  • "We really enjoyed our dining experience. Pros: Good food. BF had braised short rib. I had swordfish. personalized guac to start is awesome! We keep it simple red onoin, cilantro, plum tomato, habenero (added the right amount spicy without being too hot) cojita cheese. He got cheese empanadas as an app i got the tortilla soup (not chicken based-its tomato based and tastes like mole sauce but still good). Friendly Attentive staff Cons:fresh but weakkkkk margaritas, if you're up but the bar its very tight quarters the woman and i kept hitting each other. Overall, if they stepped up the margarita game (a little more alcohol wouldnt hurt they are VERY sweet and limey-especially when paying $9) this place would be 5 star"

  • "Xochitl (Aztec for "flower") is a find to behold! The menu boasts a plethora of mouth-watering selections too numerous to list here. The ambience is romantic, to say the least. Decor is understated, but tasteful, featuring paintings of cards from the Mexican card game "Lotteria" and a display of Tequila bottles, all very pretty. The service is extraordinary. Sam knew the menu inside and out. When we stumped him with a question, he apologized for his failing and went to find the answer--a class act all the way. Bravo!"

  • "I tried Xochitl for the first time and I liked it. The service was outstanding, the girl who took care of us made sure whatever we ordered came on time. We started with the guacamole, which was delicious. My fiance had the empanadas and I had the tortilla soup. Both were very tasty and not too salty or grease which is the problem with many restaurants. For the main dish we ordered the ribs and the stuffed pepper. Again both dishes excellent I just wished they had more spice to them. The ambiance of the place was great and the drinks were delicious, a bit pricey, but they were worth it. The only thing I did not like were the desserts, both the flan and the tres leches seemed to have been taken out of a box. they did not taste fresh at all."

  • "I dined here with 2 of my friends during Restaurant Week, and the food was delicious! The guacamole was probably the best I've ever had, and it was really cool that you could customize it to your liking. I also had the house salad, which was very good, and a short ribs dish. For dessert I had some type of mango cake that was out of this world - I will definitely be bringing my husband back!"

  • "Good food, we had a great table next to the window. I want to go back for tequila."

  • "We went here for restaurant week to try something new. Everything was amazing! The food was delicious and the portion sizes were perfect. We will definitely go back here again to try their regular menu. A plus is that they also validate parking at the local garage."

  • "My friend and I went here for dinner last Saturday night, it was pretty spur of the moment but we had no trouble making a reservation, we were seated right away and our server was great. The food here is fantastic and the drinks are even better (not your typical flavored-margaritas you expect to find at a mexican restaurant)! I've been here twice and can't wait to go a third time! Highly recommended!"

  • "My husband and I came here for restaurant week. For the entree I got the Vegetable Sope and he got the Braised Beef. They were both good, however I thought the best part of the meal was the guacamole. We got black truffle, goat cheese, and pistachio, it was fantastic."
    Dined on 1/24/2014
  • "We happened to stop in here one night for a quick drink & an appetizer. I loved the Amarillo (pineapple mint margar"ito" drink) and loved the fresh made guacamole & chips even more. We decided to try it for Restaurant Week and we're so glad we did. We each ordered different meals so we could try each others. You can't go wrong with the chicken tortilla soup or flatbread for an app, the roasted vegetable sopa or the roasted poblano pepper for an entree or the chocolate chili tart or tres leche cake for dessert. Good bar drinks & ice cold beers and good service were icing on the cake."

  • "From start to finish this place was amazing! The food was excellent and our server Jessica was very informative and helpful with the menu and we loved all her suggestions! The Mango Tres Leches Cake paired with your XO Patron Cafe and Coconut Milk Martini was the perfect ending to a perfect meal!"
