A word from Xico
Xico serves vibrant regional Mexican cuisine: classic and inspired dishes, fresh tortillas made from non-GMO corn, farm fresh local produce, sustainable meats, wild fish, and fantastic desserts. We use as many as 20 different chiles at a time to create a menu that will take you and your palate straight to Mexico, from Oaxaca to Michoacan.

The heart of Xico's bar is mezcal; a pit smoked agave spirit laced with smoke and perfect with chiles. Our classic Xico Margarita with fresh squeezed lime is unmatched and is known for being the best in Portland, as reported by the Oregonian.

Xico boasts a wine list carefully selected to pair with the flavors on the menu: Rieslings from Alcase, Germany, Italy and Oregon. The sparkling minerality, terroir and fruit of Italian Lambruschi. And Reds that span the globe.

Great food, the tuna was small but delicious. The chicken was soooo tender. The little salsa are very yummy and tortillas are made and freshly ground in-house. Great intimate setting. The group in the patio was loud, but was otherwise a great romantic spot. The waitress was wonderful and really helped guide our selections, even throwing in a free desert when we couldn't make up our minds! So nice.

We made last minute reservations here because it was among a handful of nearby restaurants that would be able to seat us early enough to allow us to get to a 9pm show. I glanced over the menu and ratings and thought - 'well - this will be fine'. Truth to tell, there are so many new restaurants cropping up in east Portland these days due to people who are big on cash but short on talent..it's sort of the story of places like SE Division where buildings are demolished left and right to make room for the overpriced condo buildings that will house all of the people moving to 'Portlandia'. Jaded - right? I had no idea we were in for such a treat. My god. The beautiful food, excellent service and well-appointed space simply transported us.

Went on a friday night and, despite the prime hour and full tables, found the scene calm and relaxed. Sat on the patio in back, which was wonderfully done--tasteful, attractive, and yet not noisy. The food was remarkably well-made, and the service was attentive. They even have a kids's menu, which actually surprised me a bit given the style of the restaurant, and yet that menu was in line with their style of food as well. The only downside was the kitchen--when the place is full, it takes a bit of time for food to get to the table. Once the food arrives, though, it is very flavorful, very well-made, and goes quickly. All in all a good value for the neighborhood.

I can not recall another fortuitous food discovery that compares with my first visit to Xico. I am not certain that I was expecting "Mexican" food but I suddenly discovered Oaxacan "Mexican" food. It was both familiar and foreign, old and new. Different enough for me to say this "doesn't taste right" and then follow with "it tastes wonderful". Nice drinks too.

I was dubious about whether angel hair pasta would work in a Mexican restaurant. My curiosity got the best of me and I ordered it. It was fantastic! The spices coating the pasta combined with fresh avocado was unusual and flavorful. My dining companions both had the chicken and very much enjoyed it. The only complaint, and it's more of an observation, is that the margaritas, while excellent, were quite small for the price. Overall, we enjoyed Xico and will return!

My friends and I enjoyed everything about Xico! The back patio was a welcome oasis, with no reminders of the hot, noisy street we left behind. A perfect antidote to a busy, stressful week. The setting & service was lovely and the food & drinks were creative, beautifully-presented, and delicious! I especially liked the habenero-infused Margarita! Complimentary Mezcal tasting and explanation was a real treat! Happy to recommend this "find" to all my friends.

I've been to Xico for appetizers (antojitos) and drinks many times and will likely stick to that approach in the future. Three of use met there for a birthday dinner on the patio recently. Service and margaritas were four star, as were the queso fundido and calbecitas, a drool-worthy creamy corn/poblano/zucchini dish with spiced grilled prawns. Sadly, entrees didn't match the great beginning. Pollio asado, spiced rotissierie chicken, was unremarkable, with slightly overcooked breast meat. It was served bland chard and odd-tasting limp chunks of peel-on cucumber that seemed to be close to the point of "turning." The birthday girl ordered a dish of masa cakes and chorizo that she said was "fine" but not worthy of a return engagement.

So, I went for dinner where the chef from small wares was doing a collaboration. They were offering only that menu, making this review a very narrow view of what xico is like. That being said, the food was outstanding! Everything had so many complex flavors and I really enjoyed the asian/Latin fusion. However, they were SLAMMED! Very busy, typically a great sign. Some of the wait staff were friendly and attentive while others seemed scattered. Our main waiter was friendly enough but was moving so quickly we were not acknowledged often and not once asked if the food was ok. I WILL GO BACK. They deserve an opinion from a regular type night as well.

Seated immediately. Friendly, competent servers. Cold beverages almost before we could order them. Appetizers nicely proportioned and delicious. Entree choices were somewhat limited, but everything put in front of me was hot, delivered with a smile, and my taste buds argued with none of it. I will go back.

Good but slightly pricy dinner. Table was small and chairs uncomfortable. Waitress was great but didn't see her quite as much as I had hoped. Patio was covered and sun was on other side of building. Got loud at times, tables were closer than I would have liked. Good but not great. Would consider going again for a special occasion, not going to be In our "normal rotation"

we had a party of 7 and the head originally booked a party of 6 to be at the restaurant. They were very efficient and helpful in changing the number of guests.however we found the food and especially the drinks overpriced. The quality of the food did not match the expectation of Portland dining. Although they tried very hard the food was OVA spiced and too much fried food even wear it wasn't expected.

Our waiter was brusque, seemed distracted and not very welcoming. The big problem came with the check. He told us about Margarita Mondays without emphasizing it was only one special $5 Margarita. My eye goes to the least expensive wine on the list which was an $8 Tempranillo. So I ordered a "Tempranillo". The waiter did not clarify which I wanted. When the check came my friends were charged $8 for their not-so-special Margaritas, and I was charged $13 for the other Tempranillo, This would not have happened if the waiter were more engaged with our ordering. He did make adjustments but was not very gracious. He made us feel it was our fault although they were his shortcomings. It ruined an otherwise wonderful evening. Food was delicious!

The margaritas were outstanding and the Trout amazing. It will be hard to not get the Trout when we return. The Queso Fundido was really good but much smaller than I've had at other places. The fried tortilla chips were delicious. The salsas that came with the order need some work. The red red chile one was super delicious. The green one was rather bland. They both needed to be a lot thicker. We'll be back for the Trout and the margaritas!

One doesn't necessarily think Mexican for brunch but we had a great dinner at Xico previously so thought it was worth trying. Food was fantastic. Pancakes made with masa gave it the right amount of corn flavor & my carnitas hash had a good amount of heat. The staff was very accommodating given that we had with us our normally-well-behaved 5 year old suddenly got a case of the goofiness. We will definitely be back for both brunch & dinner.
