A word from Woodward Table
Jeffrey and Sallie Buben's Woodward Table, housed in the historic Woodward Building is a concept that exudes a timeless feel with neighborhood charm. Located just one block from The White House, Woodward presents a "table" of dining possibilities with two eateries...the main restaurant with its creative and diverse American menu and Woodward Takeout Food, a sprite artisanal alternative for breakfast and lunch. The soul of Woodward Table's cooking involves creating seasonal iconic American dishes, a chef's contemporary approach and a regional repertoire of ingredients. Woodward Takeout Food, aka WTF, adjacent to the restaurant, creates a quick serve American breakfast or lunch for the busy Washingtonian, available to eat in or take out. Woodward Takeout Food is like being in a good cook's kitchen...a venue of sights and sounds with the bakery of the entire restaurant located at one end. Smell the fresh baked bread and other concoctions as you place your ordContinued

Diner Reviews
  • "Eclectic scene for a date night. We enjoyed it. I've never had anything like the soft shell crab cake sandwich before. I'm a fan."

  • "Food was great.wonderful beef brisket and shrimp and grits!"

  • "The food was quite overpriced, and the music was blaring to the point where it was hard to hear people right next to you."

  • "The food here is excellent, but the hostesses and servers could be a little more friendly/helpful."

  • "We had a wonderful experience at Woodward Table. We enjoyed brunch on a Saturday monring, which included DELICIOUS Bloody Marys! The cheese plate was wonderful, as was the rest of the food we ordered. I would highly recommend stopping in for a drink and a bite when you are in the DC area.... and be sure to ask for Lateef!!"

  • "All the good things about Woodward Table; great location, outstanding food, comfortable atmosphere, and thanks to Omar, General Manager for turning the kitchen problem with our food into a saved and good experience. Nice job Omar!"

  • "These guys are as consistently good as it gets. The food, serice and professional manner that they operate should be the standard."

  • "Great concept and execution .. I love spicy and the dressing was delightfully so. It should have an asterisk on the menu to let people know for any spicy items...not all love spicy! Had been to WTF often to get bread, sweets, lunch. Had not been in the restaurant and loved it. The booths even tho' next to others were comfortable and remarkably quiet for conversation. Only disappointment: my colleague had iced tea as did I (w/ mint which was a nice treat) and her glass sat empty for a very long time as various servers (except ours) and other staff walked by. NO one asked if she wanted a refill. Was surprised at the inattention. Yes, I'll go back and try again. Hoping for better service."

  • "I had a lunch meeting at Woodward Table. I ate the delicious beet and carrot salad with salmon on top and it was fresh and very tasty. The rolls were also heavenly. This is a nice place to go for a business lunch and not overly pricey."

  • "The food is OK and Woodward appears to be shooting for the same kind of concept as Old Ebbitt Grill. It has a vast menu that can satisfy almost any food need (seafood, salad, charcuterie, entrees). There is a very active bar scene in Woodward and I may eat at the bar the next time I visit."

  • "I took a friend here for her birthday and it was perfect. She wanted many changes and substitutions to what she ordered and the waiter couldn't have been nicer, remaining friendly while he went over the changes with her to make sure he had them right. She had the dandelion salad (now without dandelion) and I had the kale salad both with blackened shrimp. Both salads were great. Since I had written that it was a birthday lunch on the Open Table reservation, the waiter brought out the dessert on a happy birthday plate with a candle."

  • "The food was very good but the price and service were not up to par with the other amazing restaurants in DC that we dined this weekend. Our server was friendly but just went AWOL from time to time and his advice was off the mark. Food was very good and we had a good time but I would not recommend. Try it forlunch maybe"

  • "Our group of 5 people were seated quickly and with an informative waiter, selected drinks and discussed dinner options. We were served as a group and all were very happy with service, food and ambiance."

  • "The food was very good; really liked my salad and the flat breads were very good, especially the mushroom one. The service was good; the servers were polite & good, but as I said to my husband "not charming" -- not that I want to be best friends, but a smile or a bit of warmth would be OK We were there on a Tuesday evening so it was not crowded, but the music at the bar was loud and our table was not very far from the bar. We thought if there were a lot of diners there, it would have been very difficult to have a conversation. With few diners between 8 & 9:30 on a Tuesday, we could have a conversation so the music was just somewhat annoying. Not sure I'd come back; too many other good places with better ambiance."

  • "Great place for lunch. One of my fav down town. Burgers and Catfish sandwich were the main dishes. Service is awesome."

  • "We had an awesome meal. The burger with a sunny-side up egg was the best burger I've ever eaten. I'm extremely picky about burgers because rarely do restaurants every prepare it a true medium rare--this was cooked perfectly--it was fat, juicy &flavorful! The fries were great also. My husband had the filet and it was also cooked perfectly & flavorful. They were a skimpy on his asparagus but they were very good. The only negative was the cheesecake, which was just so, so. Service was o.k. and the wine list is o.k. but not great. Fortunately they have a house option at $10, which most restaurants in D.C. don't seem to have. We ate at The Hamilton and Old Ebbitt, which were both good but we enjoyed Woodward Table more than both of those."

  • "Even with a reservation, we were seated in the bar area (dining room was dead) against the window on a cold and rainy day. The cold air from the front door created a draft, so it was rather cold where we sat. It took way too long to have our orders taken and our drinks refilled. Our waiter and other restaurant staff walked by us on multiple occasions without refilling our drinks or taking our order. I've been here for lunch a three times and once for dinner. The service is hit or miss. I would go back for dinner, but for lunch, I'd be wary that it would take too long again."

  • "The only reason I give it three stars instead of four was that we waited about 10-15 minutes for a waiter to come by. Not to take our order, just to even come by for the first time. We got up once to find the hostess and let her know and then had to flag her down again after waiting another couple of minutes with no waiter. The restaurant was full, but not busy and we had reservations so I'm not sure what the deal was with the lack of servers. That being said, once someone did come to the table - they were very attentive and the food came out very quickly and it was excellent. The buttermilk biscuit with strawberry jam is like a meal in and of itself."

  • "First time at Woodward, and we enjoyed our dining experience. Mario, our server, offered food suggestions/very attentive. The crayfish fritters were delicious, but the flatbread with proscuitto/goat cheese fell flat and tasted one-note, no depth/texture. The entrees: gnocchi was creamy/tasty; mussels were good but small quantityl; the fish special was tasty, with a good sear; the pork chop was flavorful, but needed a subtle veg (chard, kale). For dessert (our friend's bday), Mario was able to combine 2 selections on one plate...no questions asked! The coconut doughnut combined with the lemon tart...delicious. Ps. the cocktails were great"

  • "Having to find a restaurant for a couple of very picky relatives can be difficult but Woodward was perfect. The menu gave everyone something that they truly enjoyed. The cocktails were also fantastic and the wine list was huge. We will definitely dine at Woodward Table again."

  • "Dined with friends from Ireland who are top end diners - they travel frequently across the US, Europe and Asia and expect top quality whatever the venue. They were not disappointed and neither were we: WTF was excellent. Friendly and attentive staff; great choice on the menu; food delivered at just the right time and an excellent wine list (we had a very fine Beaujolais). If you have not been there yet just go there! One of the best in DC."

  • "Great working lunch spot -- interesting menu and consistently good. Only time it was not up to par was during restaurant week, but I eat there regularly and in general it's excellent with excellent service."

  • "This is hands down one of my favorite restaurants. My last experience, however, was not as great. It appra as though there was a new inexperienced chef thus the inconsistency with my food choices. The sweet potatoes in the trout dish were undercooked and there were nuts in the pear tart this time. The change in preparation and the ingredients in my selections were sub par. Don't let an outstanding restaurant suffer for inconsistencies."

  • "We celebrated a friends birthday that evening. It was great. The service was good, the food was very tasty, and we all really had a great time. there are minor tweaks that could've been made but overall this experience was wonderful my friend really appreciated it. Thank you for everything."

  • "We went last Saturday for my birthday dinner. One member of the party has a gluten allergy. The waiter said he would check on some entrees and appetizers to see if they were gluten free. That didn't happen. One person ordered a fish dinner but changed to the chicken entree when ordering. The fish came out. The waiter said he could switch it out for the chicken but it would take 22 minutes. He admitted he forgot to change the order. No compensation or real apology was given. When the bill came there was a $1.50 upgrade charge for each drink because we ordered our drinks with ice. The manager came over and said that was an added charge for "rocks". Overall, the food was good but the service was very disappointing."

  • "I went to Woodward Table after hearing it got great reviews and knowing I loved Bistro Bis. Unfortunately, I was disappointed completely. The food was mediocre. It was over-spiced and generally not that exciting. Definitely won't be coming back for seconds."

  • "Our server was top notch and the atmosphere was vibrant. Food was good (strip steak and scallop gratin) and their s'more cheesecake was outstanding."

  • "This was my first time goign to Woodward Table and was very excited. Unfortunately my first impressions weren't great. The service at the bar was PAINFULLY slow and frankly embarrassing however the server didn't even care or acknowledge it. When I asked for the check so we can go to our table we probably waited 5-10 minutes and then I told my guests to go without me. Then I waited another 1-2 minutes and then asked the server to bring everything to my table as I was tired of waiting. Appetizers were great - we got oysters, steak tartare and ahi tuna. Great for sharing and were all very good!"

  • "I and several of my girlfriends celebrated my birthday with Sunday brunch at Woodward Table. Everything was great (service, food, price), except there was a miscommunication between our server and the kitchen staff, so our food took over 1.5 hours to arrive after we ordered! Normally this would have been a major deal-breaker (0 star rating) however, the server was very straightforward about the mix-up, his manager comped my meal & birthday dessert, and since we had all ordered the bottomless brunch deal none of us minded too much that we had to wait so long (besides the fact that we were drinking on empty stomachs!). Since this seemed like one of those 'one time mistakes' I think 3 stars is fair and I would still recommend brunch here."

  • "I've been here twice now and have not been disappointed. They really do get everything right. The food and service were outstanding. The bread before the meal was phenomenal. Entrees are very well presented, and portions are just right. What else can I say?"

  • "Our second visit, first brunch. Very pleased with the varied choices, easy to avoid typical brunch food if so desired. I had the hang town fry, good but oysters were a little too breaded. Two had the marinated fish platter and enjoyed it. Our waiter was a novice but very nice and he needs more practice but will be there soon. Appreciated the fact that the staff didn't try to remove our dishes till all parties were through. The space is large but the placement of the seats makes it seem more intimate."

  • "We were seated right at the railing of the open kitchen which was so fun to have the theatre of dishes being prepared and sent out to diners. We had the following delicious and very rich dishes: marrow bones (pickled strips of beets, carrots + capers helped cut the richness), crab and artichoke flat bread, corned beef brisket and skate wing (a special). Very high quality. I can see why it's on the Washingtonian top 100 list!"

  • "First time dining at Woodward Table for me and my husband. We decided to have a drink at the bar before our dinner reservation. Bar area has a great atmosphere and should we go again would probably walk in and just dine at the bar. Dining room acoustics awful to the point of annoying. Too many other good/great restaurants in town. This was a bit touristy."

  • "Reserved a table...was shown to a booth...asked for a table, and was finally provided a table...waited at length for a waiter...then again for a menu...then again to have questions answered about our order...then for our food -- which did not come as we ordered it."
