Diner Reviews
  • "Great spot to host a romantic dinner for two without all the white table cloths and extras. Food was both extremely detailed and flavourful - highly recommend the ribs, warm kale salad, gnocchi and rapini! Staff was extremely attentive and warm, and even though we did not order dessert as we were too full, my fiance was brought out a small dessert with a candle for his birthday which i thought was a classy touch! Thank you to Woodlot for a great night!"

  • "The decor is fun--industrial but not impersonal. Having both a vegetarian and meat-containing menu is a great idea, and the dinner selections were innovative with unusual herbs and spices. The bread, baked on site, is a high point. The service was another strength. We will definitely be coming again and bringing out of town guests."

  • "Went there in a group of 6 for dinner. Everything was good, although nothing really outstanding. Portions a bit too much on the smaller size (my wife's Pickerel looked like a plate you would see from Canoe and other high end places). The real issue was the service, that was very slow. Waiter was very pleasant and courteous, but everything we ordered took a long time to come to the table; it took 30 minutes for our appetizers alone!"

  • "I remember when this place used to be a nightclub (yes, I am old) a few years ago. It is essentially a garage converted to a nightclub which was then converted to this restaurant. This makes for a casual setting with an airy, well ventilated, open space concept. The chairs and tables are made of real wood but not very comfortable to sit in for long periods of time, which is key in a restaurant that takes ways too long to bring your food. The service staff were very friendly however not very attentive. As I mentioned, we waited a while to get our food, but struggled to get some bread and butter to our table while waiting. The food (including pastas and starters) was great but overpriced for what is was."

  • "Very good. As a professional cook and traveler I applaud Woodlot on the quality and style of it's bread - worth the trip alone. Staff is warm and welcoming from the moment you enter. Wonderful atmosphere and smokey aroma is comforting and also whets the appetite. The food is very well prepared, served at the correct temperature, very nicely presented. Above all the flavour impresses and is well developed and seasoned, so as to leave a depth and length of finish on the palate. The pickerel, pork chop and flat iron steak are exceptional. The vegetarian menu was the initial draw, and it was very good, but the stuffed tofu could be more flavourful. Cheesecake is amazing. Cheese board has the best garnishes I've seen, but needs more cheese."

  • "I love dining at Woodlot. It's great for special occasions or date nights. And as a vegetarian, I ADORE their separate vegetarian menu. It's nice to feel like I'm not an afterthought at an upscale restaurant. I highly recommend this place. Great food, great ambiance, and great service."

  • "There are a lot of good reviews about this restaurant, so my expectation was high. The service was OK. Food was good but overpriced compared to quality. The restaurant was very noisy and the tables were to closed together."

  • "Old friends went to catch up. Excellent, varied menu that was also very vegetarian-friendly. We were adequately filled with sharing the appetizers, having an appetizer portion first course, and then a full main course. Food was outstanding!! Very tasty. Unfortunately, service was amateur at best: we had a reservation, were led upstairs, but were stopped midway when the server realized that our table wasn't free we ordered 4 appetizers to share amongst the 5 of us; wait-staff should have recommended ordering 2 of a couple of those appetizers, because they would be impossible to share amongst 5. (We also each ordered a smaller "main" and then a true main) drinks took 25 minutes to arrive after ordering long delay between apps and mains"

  • "The waiter was very gracious and made a tequila cocktail we had had before that was no longer on the menu. Mushrooms were outstanding as always and we tried the polenta fries which were delicious. We had a lovely pickerel dish and split everything - they kindly gave us two plates for dishes. Only disappointment was the salad which had a dressing that tasted of mustard and not much else. I really like sitting outside as it's comfortable and relatively quiet. A great spot."

  • "The food was great. Care was taken in the prep and the flavours were well-balanced. Small but super delicious selection on the menu. The atmosphere of the restaurant is warm and vibrant, very enjoyable. Our server, while friendly and very personable, was maybe not as attentive as we'd have liked. We waited a long time to get drinks refilled and didn't get to order our main course until we'd been sitting at the table for well over an hour. There was also a mixup with one of our orders, which had to be sent back and redone. There was a group of us and so it was fine, we just chatted and enjoyed the patio, but there was definitely room for improvement in this area. Overall, a great experience and I would definitely recommend it."

  • "My partner and I are big fans of Woodlot, and it's always a pleasure to eat there if we're celebrating a special occasion. On our recent visit, they outdid themselves. Our food was incredible, the service was efficient and polite, the atmosphere was one of a kind. We were having dinner with close friends, and I think it's safe to say that all four of us were blown away. I would highly recommend giving Woodlot a try. In my experience, it has consistently been incredible."

  • "Table for two, late on Saturday night. Fantastic. Very friendly servers (even if they forgot to top up our wine...who really cares?), fabulous, unique food in perfect portions. Nice to be able to choose appetizer size or meal size for the pastas. Superior ingredients and flavour blends. Would describe it as "Canadian Woodland Gourmet". Great ambiance with no attitude. They gave us a delicious loaf of bread to take home for breakfast the next day. Highly recommend WoodLot!"

  • "My husband and I went to Woodlot for the first time and it was wonderful in all ways! We dined outside on the lovely patio. The service was stellar and very welcoming. I am vegetarian and was thrilled by the separate vegetarian menu provided. We shared the mushroom appetizer as well as the potato and cheese croquettes. The kitchen plated the mushroom appetizer and two plates just so we did not miss the presentation! Both were delicious! Our mains were also exceptional. My husband had the ribs and I had the agnolotti and both were excellent. Desserts are worth having too! I cannot say enough about the welcoming, excellent service. The whole experience was fantastic and we will be back soon!"

  • "This is a great spot with delicious food and a unique approach to carnivore/vegetarian dining. They publish two menus which are very similar but vary ingredients to make the course either vegetarian or with meat. This flexible approach ensures there's something for everyone."

  • "Service was excellent. Staff were attentive but not in any way overbearing - always there if you needed something but not there when you didn't. Made for a good romantic evening out where you don't feel too bothered and can focus on the person you're with. The food was very tasty. We both had the steak ($29) and shared polenta fries ($7) and asparagus gratin ($10). While the steak was cooked perfectly and was a very nice piece of meat I do not think I would pay $29 for it again. For that price it should come with something (it has some beautiful mushrooms on the plate, but that is it). The polenta fries were delicious, and the gratin was good as well, but I don't think really worth the price. I would go back but am not rushing to do so."

  • "Hugely disappointing. Mushy gnocchi, flavourless crostini, overpriced cold entrees, horrible kale salad and cheesy (?!?) asparagus- yuck. Waited 90 minutes for our food. Maybe the worst dining experience I've had for the high price. Will not return."

  • "Chef David's food was so beautiful, earthy and thoughtfully considered. It was inventive without being pretentious. My fiancé and I were blown away (and my fiancé is also a chef). We also had the privilege of being the last table of the night so we were beyond treated by the chef while seated at the chef's table right in front of their open kitchen. I love the rustic & raw converted garage space for this warm, intimate and inviting place."

  • "This was our first trip to Toronto and as it turns out there are a number of restaurants that are closed on Monday. The Woodlot used to fall into this group, but no more. There is a separate vegetarian menu with many of the same offerings or flavors that are on the omnivore menu, the best of which is the grilled hen of the woods mushroom salad."

  • "Inventive cocktails, odd wine list. What's with the 4 oz pours anyway? Small, intelligent menu. Mains were uniformly excellent and we'd go back for those any day. Wild rice and mushroom app was outstanding. Halloumi cheese only a little less so. Cheese cake light and not too sweet. But we were there for 2 and a half hours; an hour between courses and the stretch between ordering dessert and getting it was ridiculous (30-40 minutes to slice a cake and add a dab of whipped cream? Really??). Why we'd go back anyway -- the melting piney hanger steak; home made tagliatelle; sesame and ginger infused burdock on rainbow trout seared to perfection. Just make sure you have LOTS of time to savor, cuz you'll need it."

  • "Positives: Attentive service, creative (slightly precious) kitchen, vegetarian choices, yummy dessert Negatives: Noisy; much too loud for easy quiet conversation; plates skimpy for the price and overpriced in general."
    Dined on 5/31/2014
  • "I could not recommend this place because it was just too loud. Conversation was limited to the person beside you, we rarely spoke across the table. Two mistakes in our order, although they were rectified. Server. brusque verging on rude. "

  • "very cute restaurant, great for date night. food is pretty good, a little expensive, but took an hour to get food. service could be improved "

  • "Excellent meal and service. Noise level made it difficult to hear companions at times."
    Dined on 5/21/2014
  • "A lot of hype around this restaurant so our expectations were high going in. The food was very good, but the fact that it took so long to be served made the experience underwelming. Coupled also with the fact that our server had to be flagged down for attention and no one was attentive with the pouring of our wine. Unlikely to return."

  • "I'd been to Woodlot before and loved it so enthusiastically recommended we go with a group of friends. While the food was very good (though overpriced), the service was absolutely appalling. We waited close to two hours to receive our main courses. When my friends ordered another drink at one point, the waiter rolled his eyes at them! We were stunned. I've never experienced this. We will not be recommending this place anymore!"

  • "We couldn't get a table upstairs at 7, but we really wanted to meet at Woodlot and give it a try, so we took the communal table. It was great, altho we didn't try the upstairs dining tables yet to compare. The waiter, the food, the table and seating ....all good!!! And one of us has hearing aids.....no problem, we could hear each other fine. Best part....the small but truly excellent menu "

  • "I am always impressed with the creative and wonderful tastes at Woodlot. The mushroom salad and crostini appetizers were very good. Our mains included the salmon, pork chop and duck cabbage rolls - all were excellent. We asked and our waiter receommended a nice, red wine (which we thoroughly enjoyed) which was reasonably priced - it was refreshing not to have an expensive choice pushed in our direction."
