Diner Reviews
  • "Past dinners here would have rated as a 4 or 5 out of 5. This time was closer to 2 out of 5 based on the dining experience failing to meet expectations. Steak ordered medium rare was served well done, attempt to correct this took over 20 additional minutes which meant my party was done with their main course before mine was served properly. Most good steak houses would have served me the next medium rare steak coming off the grill and not wait to cook an entirely new steak. As gesture to make things right we were served a complementary dessert which was fabulous except the coffee served with dessert was cold. In spite of all of this our waitress was outstanding. This experience makes me question if I should return to Woodfire Grille. "

  • "The atmosphere is unique and cozy. We ask for a booth with a "fire window" when we make reservations. The food is delicious and always a special experience."

  • "We celebrated an anniversary dinner here and chose this location after reading other online reviews of the establishment. The food was great and cooked exactly to our specifications. Our server was very polite and added to the experience of fine dining. The fire theme of the restaurant was tastefully implemented in a way that was both very present yet unobtrusive. Others have remarked about the noise level and having read that prior to our dining experience my wife and I were listening for it. In all honesty the restaurant had somewhat of a more vibrant noise level but not anything we would consider displeasing or out of the ordinary and thankfully it was not pin-drop quiet either. Great experience."

  • "Had been wanting to try this for awhile and weren't disappointed considering the area not a "foodie" mecca. The bread was outstanding as was my Thai pasta. Partner's prime rib was rare as he requested and very flavorful. The sauce on the appetizer of the night overpowered the tasty salmon slices and the round of pumpernickel it sat on was not a great pairing. Lobster bisque was luke warm and more cream tasting than lobster. Overall, I would go back. The server was knowledgeable and attentive."

  • "What I really love to get is the bison tenderloin which they didn't have at this time. So I went with pork. But if there's a place that can grill up bison, it's chef Jason Colberson. Thanks again for another great dinning experience. I'll be back."

  • "As always food, waiter (John) and restaurant was outstanding but must complain that the special baked potato is no longer served and that is a must have when I go to Woodfire. Very sad it's no longer on the menu."

  • "Woodfire is always on my options list for a special occasion meal, nice atmosphere, good service and great food. Better for a family occasion maybe not that romantic dinner for two. Service is always great and the beef is super tender. You must try the chop salad!"

  • "We had a great time at Woodfire Grill. The drinks were superb, as well as the food. Our waitress was cordial and attentive. There were nine of us and everyone was happy with their food selection. The lobster bisque was delicious and the fish and sea food also was great. I would recommend this restaurant without hecesitation."

  • "Food was good but not great. Mediocre and kinda pricey. Which would be well worth it if the food where great or outstanding. But no. Just average. We got our food extremely fast and the server was great as well. Just kinda expected more. Overall disappointed. :("

  • "My wife and I were with my daughter and her fiancée and we decided to take a break from the Casino and have dinner last Friday night. Going to Woodfire Grille was an excellent decision. Everything from the Host and Servers down to the drinks and dinner was a fantastic experience. Had the cedar planked salmon....outstanding flavor ! Will definitely be back soon."

  • "Had a 9pm reservation, did not get seated until 9:40pm. However, the bar has appetizers so we ate the appetizer there. The bar is elegant so it wasn't the worst thing. After getting seated the waitress wasn't very attentive, but she did remember to order our dessert prior to us finishing the meal. The food was overall delicious. The filet minion melted in my mouth and the shrimp and sea scallop pasta was a perfect balance of peanut sauce, heat and seafood. The chocolate meltdown cake would have been great had it not been cold. It was still good, but would have been "to die for" if it was warm. The bill with One Drink, Appetizer, Main Dish, and a shared Dessert for two was $102."

  • "We enjoyed an appetizer and cocktail at the bar while waiting for our table. We were seated 10 minutes ahead of our reservation time, and received excellent service from our server! The steaks were great! We even got chocolate dipped strawberries as a bonus, for Valentines Day! Great experience!"

  • "This was some of the best waiter service I've have for a long time. I believe the waiter was John or Jim. He was so polite and made you feel so comfortable. My wife and I both ordered ribs and they tasted good, but there was barely any meat on them. I've never eaten ribs with less meat on them. I like if they upgraded the ribs, they would see more repeat customers. The best ribs I've had in Dubuque was at the Star Brewery, but that's closed now, so we are looking for a new good rib place. The mashed potatoes and BLT mac and cheese were both great. The little truffles after the meal were to die for. All and all it was a good meal with amazing service!"

  • "We have been to Woodfire a number of times and it is always consistent. Many times, there is a drop off on certain nights at high end restaurants. Not so here. Each time we have been here, the food has been excellent, the pace of the service in serving the dishes at the right time in the evening is spot on. The wine list is great and they make hand crafted specialty cocktails at the bar. The desserts are worth saving room for as well."

  • "Dinner reservation at 6:15 before the Symphony at 8:00. Thought that would be plenty of time for leisurely dining, Sorry, over an hour wait between ordering and being served. Over a half hour wait between getting the bill and being able to pay and leave the restaurant for our event. I had to go up to the bar and plead that we needed to pay in order to get to the show on time. Wait another 15min for our server to finally let me pay. Late for the event... Slowest service I have ever seen at a fine restaurant"

  • "We had heard a lot about the Woodfire, most notably that it was expensive. It was, but we felt it would be worth it to get that fancy restaurant experience. The food was good, but not great. I had the ribs and they were fine; nothing special. The sauce was pretty plain. My wife had the salmon, which she liked, but they managed to give her just three asparagus spears! The cheesecake was good, but it seemed more like pudding. The service was very good. The ambiance, on our night out, was not. It was pretty loud. We were taken aback by a group of six that was so loud, we thought we were in a Buffalo Wild Wings. Nothing wrong with BWW, but our bill would have been $50 not the $105 we paid for on our night out at a fancy restaurant."

  • "Took my wife for our anniversary and we both agree that this was THE best all around meal we have ever had. From the lobster bisque soup, to the applewood smoked bacon wrappdped chicken, to the cedar plank salmon all the way to the molten chocolate cake! Kudos to the chef!"

  • "Our dinner for my husband's birthday was delicious. The staff was very helpful in recommending a beer to his liking. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. The salmon is a no-fail favorite. The tableside fire was especially enjoyable on the cold winter night. Our courses were staggered well to be able to leisurely enjoy our evening."

  • "My fiancé and I were recently in town for the holiday season and wanted to go out for a romantic dinner. I must say, we were absolutely stunned at the high level of service, food, and drink quality. As food enthusiast we go out to at at least twice per week often for romantic and exquisite dining. My fiancé said has been talking about the visit with family and friends ever since we walked out of your doors. We both agreed that this was a TOP 5 dining experience that either of us have enjoyed. Please pass compliments along to the chef for his exquisite prime rim, but most of all, Lisa our waitress was ABSOLUTLEY PHENOMENAL. She turned our ordinary night out in Dubuque into a night that we will never forget!"

  • "Great ambiance. Had Coconut shrimp and crab appetizer, both quite competently done. Lobster bisque very rich and luxurious with great mouth feel. Entrees satisfying, Sea bass cooked perfectly but small portion. Sides not too exciting and desserts could use some updating and imagination. Overall a pleasant experience and one of the nicest establishments for dependable fine dining in Dubuque. Will continue to patronize.."

  • "This was our second time dining at Woodfire Grill and once again it was an excellent experience. It is the only restaurant in Dubuque that has had that effect on us. Our vacation home is in Galena, IL. We gladly made the 40 minute drive to get to Woodfire Grill and we will do it again."

  • "Definatly the place for a special occasion. The food was good, but the portion size small. Everything is ala cart. So if you want to add a salad or potato it will cost you. We were sat by the window and there was a draft coming in the window, so it would have been nice to sit by the fire. I ordered the Bacon wrapped Shrimp. The shrimp was excellent but the pasta and sauce was kind of bland. If I returned again I would probably try something different."

  • "very overpriced for what you got. the new York strip was a good size and was very good. but the accompanying vegetable was 3 small pieces of asparagus, really !! every thing else was pay for extra for everything. $4.65 a piece for 4 shrimp appetisers, $ 5.00 for a salad or potato. the drinks were reasonable."

  • "I was entertaining a couple of people from out of town and chose the Woodfire based on recommendations from others. This was the first time I had been there. Everything was great. The timing of how the drinks, appetizers and main meal were brought out was perfect. Nothing was rushed. The service was also decent. Thank you for making it a great first experience for me and my guests. They were just as impressed."

  • "Unfortunately our experience this time was not that great. We have always loved woodfire, but our service was not good. Next time we will ask for Dahan for our server. If you EVER go to this place, ask for him ! (LOVE him and wished we had him) we had 'Laura' she was nice, but VERY slow. and we felt ignored. We had to ask another server for the complimentary bread, and at one point had to get up and go to the bar, to get our own drinks (that is how seldome she was at our table) so it just not as fun when as the customer, you have to ask for things, or go the bar yourself. So the food was GREAT. the Service was not good."
