From the kitchen to the bar, everything we serve is defined by a passion for exploring unique flavor combinations. Wood is more than a name: our wood-fired oven is at the heart of it all, mustering a dynamic menu of small-plate, American fare, made with the best ingredients the season has to offer. Though the dishes regularly change, they are defined by a few constants: meat is butchered in-house from humanely-raised animals; vegetables are drawn from family farms like Green Acres (North Judson, IN), Three Sisters (Kankakee, IL), and Spence Farm (Fairbury, IL); herbs are picked directly from Wood’s private garden; and all pasta and sausage are freshly made, straight from the Wood kitchen to the plate. We bring the same attention to quality and taste to Backwoods, our late-night Belgian fry pick-up window.   • "We had a great evening at Wood. Very popular restaurant in a vibrant neighborhood. The beautiful bar stretches down the length of the restaurant and is quite comfortable. Good wine and cocktail menu. Limited inside seating but come the warm weather the outside seating will provide more space. Small plate and entree selections were varied and delicious. We enjoyed the walleye entree and the lamb. I highly recommend the praire salad with potatoes and kale and octopus starters were great too."

  • "We started by sharing small plates --- loved the tagliatelle and the flatbread. Then we ordered entrees My husband had the polenta and he loved it. I had the lamb and it was really outstanding. Our friends had the walleye and they enjoyed that too. The staff couldn't have been more attentive. Our waiter was so nice -- pleasant, always there when we needed him, made very helpful suggestions and candidly told us his preferences-- which I thought were spot on. And the host came back to our table to also check that our evening was going well. . .I'd highly recommend this restaurant!"

Great choices of small plates as well as a wide variety of entrees and sophisticated cocktails.   • "I am a subscriber to Timeline Theater and am always looking for a dinner spot in the neighborhood. Parking is very difficult so I look for something a reasonable walking distance from Timeline parking. Wood is a great option, less than a mile from the theater. Inventive, fresh local ingredients, and reasonably priced for the high quality. Our server, Mark, was helpful and friendly. The host also checked on us during our meal to make sure that we were happy with our selections. My husband's seafood special, halibut, was outstanding as was my creatively prepared and served lamb roast. We will be returning to Wood."

  • "Pros: - They accepted a reservation for 5. The booth was roomy and very comfortable. - Specials - and menu items - were explained thoroughly - Service was near perfect. Water glasses were refilled promptly and dirty plates whisked away - but not too soon! - We all had different dishes and they were all equally fresh and flavorful - Ambiance was very casual and friendly, a plus on a cold Sunday morning.   • "This was our second time at Wood. It's now one of our favorite places. We have been there on Friday and Saturday, and it was lively both nights; we observed that they were still seating people at 10 pm. Friendly, but not obtrusive, bartenders and wait staff. Food is outstanding - we love the bread and cheese plate as a starter. The delicious Bijou salad was also ample enough for two. Be sure to order your own entree, as you will NOT want to share! Entrees are unique, but not in a "weird, what IS this" kind of way. We found parking nearby on the street both nights for an 8:30 res. (You may have to drive around for a few minutes.) Neighborhood is very lively, too - lots on people on the street, even in the c-c-c-cold! Love Wood!"

  • "I made a reservation a week in advance for a party of three. We got the worst table in the house, right by the door where a fourth couldn't have been sat comfortably without being constantly bumped by passersby. Seriously, the second door didn't close all the way or got stuck open and we were in the perpetual breeze of the 18 degree air outside. They just need to get rid of that table in the winter. Service was slow to start, but attentive after that. Food was all quite tasty. I had the gnocchi with rabbit confit which was great. The pasta light and fluffy, unique for gnocchi. My friends had the short-ribs and the veal sausage. Both were very complimentary. Drinks were good. Don't give the worst table in the house to an Open Table VIP."

The service was good. It was a hip younger crowd. Maybe we will try it for dinner, but with all the good places in Chicago, we won't be running back."

  • "My group was a five, we were celebrating a friends birthday, our reservation was early and we were seated when we arrived. The ambiance was great, the energy is fun. The service and the food were excellent, everything about Wood was upscale and made it a special night to remember. This was a Sunday night and the restaurant filled quickly, and energy grew as we completed our experience not just a meal. My group has spread the word to many of our Foodie friends and relatives, having experienced great restaurants around the world this is on par with the best. Highly recommend Wood to anyone looking for a great memory, and enjoyable evening out."

The noise level was far too loud. I know it's Boystown, but the alcohol fueled jokes from the guy sitting three feet away weren't very funny and did not need to be shouted for all to enjoy. The service was dilatory. The waiter was pleasant and engaged in long conversations with many other tables. He recognized that my friend and I were having an animated conversation and left us alone. Great, but how many times should one have to search and wait, wait, wait for him? (I have waited on tables.)"

  • "The service was absolutely perfect, the food was spectacular. We were celebrating my son's birthday. Five of us shared three small plates: scallops, sweetbreads, and foie gras. Each was perfectly enhanced with various purees and sauces, and each was divine. We then each had an entree. The gnocchi with rabbit ragu was incredible, gnocchi soft and pillowy inside with a perfect crust on the outside, very savory. Venison perfectly cooked and accompanied, short ribs tender and moist, walleye was delicious (that's what I had) with a cauliflower puree, shredded brussels sprouts and roasted cauliflower. MMMMM it was delicious. Chocolate dessert--decadent and wonderful. Highly recommend!"

  • "Everything we ordered was very good, but the Chicken Liver Mousse and the Sweetbreads small plates were EXCELLENT! $10 desserts are really for two people. Waiter knew the menu inside and out, was friendly and attentive, but never intrusive. Great, smaller wine list very reasonably priced. The only knock I have was for the high seating that became uncomfortable as the meal progressed. Next time we go (and there will be a next time) we will probably sit at the bar (which appears more comfortable), but the food deserves a table setting. A great meal I will remember."

I went online to look at prices and thought it was reasonable for the type of food that was being served. The site had an option for making reservations and I'm glad we made them!
