A word from Wood
From the kitchen to the bar, everything we serve is defined by a passion for exploring unique flavor combinations. Wood is more than a name: our wood-fired oven is at the heart of it all, mustering a dynamic menu of small-plate, American fare, made with the best ingredients the season has to offer. Though the dishes regularly change, they are defined by a few constants: meat is butchered in-house from humanely-raised animals; vegetables are drawn from family farms like Green Acres (North Judson, IN), Three Sisters (Kankakee, IL), and Spence Farm (Fairbury, IL); herbs are picked directly from Wood’s private garden; and all pasta and sausage are freshly made, straight from the Wood kitchen to the plate. We bring the same attention to quality and taste to Backwoods, our late-night Belgian fry pick-up window.   • "I went to Wood on Friday night with the boyfriend and another couple. We sat in the window seat - what a view! We got to see the neighborhood heating up for pride week. The vibe was cool and I appreciated that our server was attentive, but laid back. We ordered five small plates and two large plates to split and it was the perfect amount of food! Everything was totally delicious, if not a little salty (but lets be honest, what restaurant isn't too salty these days?). Scallops and carrot agnolotti were the highlights, skip the ham flatbread and get another cocktail! Final bill was $175 before tip. I would definitely go back for a fun night on the town."

  • "It was a special occasion for our 1st visit and was a perfect evening to enjoy the outdoor seating. We were greeted in a friendly manner and seated promptly. The staff was knowledgeable, helpful and very attentive. The bartender mixed a great "Old" Old Fashioned--one of the best. The menu selection was truly gourmet and beautifully prepared, however, the duck breast was a tad chewy. The appetizers were excellent. In fact, we ordered a serving of the chicken liver mousse to take home. It was a busy night but we never felt rushed. Our compliments to all who made the occasion a memorable one. Looking forward to another visit in spite of the 80 mile drive."

  • "Got a gift certificate here from my old boss. The food was really good - I had the filet, which was pretty much perfect, and my wife very much enjoyed her duck breast. Appetizers were good, though not great, and while the dessert we got was very tasty, the options were pretty limited. Really great cocktails. Only complaint - our server seemed easily distracted. We were during the lead-in to Chicago Pride, which the neighborhood embraced fully, and this place was crazy on Saturday night. Seemed like our waiter kept running into people he knew and getting sidetracked. His service was great, but it was hard to get ahold of him if we needed something. Still, highly recommended."

  • "We were looking forward to eating at Wood. Heard a lot of great things about this restaurant. The food was very good. We ordered the fried chicaken and sturgeon. However our waiter had quite an attitude, made us feel like we were an inconvenience to him. UNTIL right before he brought the check, he was our best friend then. We still tipped well as the men who brought our food and filled our water glasses were friendly and curteous. We were also placed at a 'table' at the end of the bar. It would've been just fine except the later it got, the drunker people bacame and started crowding us while we tried to eat. That was a bit uncomfortable. Pros and cons~"

  • "So the service and atmosphere were quite nice, and the drinks were quite inspired. Wish we could say the same about the food. On artistry, the presentation was lovely. Taste, well, that was an issue. The food didn't quite live up to the promise that the menu (prices) suggested. The only exception was the pasta small plate with carrot. Perhaps it was the combination of small plates we chose, but we ended the meal with a so-so feeling about Wood. And we really hoped for more."

  • "This place was a great find. I didn't know that it existed before yelp. The menu looked great, original so we gave it a try. The host was super friendly, the server was good, but the host outshined him. Me and my friend split an apetizer and both got an entree. I would go back and probably try a bunch of the small plates, the carrot pasta was to die for. Drinks were a little pricey for a local spot, it would be awesome if they had some specials during the week, and if they did I would come back often. Beautiful decor, would be a great date spot. I will go back and recommend!"

  • "We've been to Wood for dinner twice. The menu is large and diverse (they even offer a vegetarian menu!) and the selection is wonderful. We've taken different sets of friends and everyone had a wonderful meal. Lovely upscale restaurants on the north side are few and far between, so keep this one in mind if you want a nice meal but don't want to trek downtown. It was a little too chilly for us to eat outside, but the outdoor seating will be wonderful once summer warms up. "

  • "A very lively and nice place - great service with very friendly staff. What Wood lacks is coordination. We had to ask twice for our wine; which came at the same time as the food arrived - the food arrived without crostinis (and it's hard to eat pate without bread). And after that all out dishes arrived at the same time (small plates) - so it was hard to enjoy them without being cold. All in all the food was very nice, and I am sure with a little oversight Wood could improve tremendously."

  • "We ate at Wood on a Saturday night. Based on all the reviews and ratings, we had high expectations. We ordered the cheese tray which had nothing more than four cheeses and a smear of honey. There was nothing to pair with the different cheeses. We also had the tartare which was just average. The tartare at Bin 36 is much better. I had the halibut and my husband had the pork belly. Again, the food was just OK. We weren't blown away like we expected to be. We've eaten at several Michelin-rated restaurants as well as others that have received various awards, and Wood just didn't meet that standard. We've had better food at suburb places like Davonti Enoteca, Vie, Tallgrass, and Adelle's. "

  • "Brunch at Wood was great, totally exceeded my expectations. I've been many times for cocktails and a couple of times for dinners, but was delighted by the options and prices on their brunch menu. $5 mimosas! $7 bloody marys! All breakfast entrees under $13. For Wood, this is an absolute steal. The only issue is that they seemed to be understaffed for the brunch crowd, getting a second round of drinks was difficult. If you're willing to wait though, I definitely recommend it. "

  • "First, the place was half empty, yet it took a long time to get my waiter to approach me. Ordered eggs and toast and the dry, cold toast came unbuttered. Without butter to add. Had to wave another waiter down to get some. There was no salt or pepper on the table and I had to ask for that. The pepper shaker came...empty. Very expensive for simple food."

  • "Having seen Wood on Check Please, our expectations were high. There is a lot to like here. Staff is great. Menu, though limited options, was very interesting and reasonably priced. Morels with veal sweetbreads were delicious. Halibut and short ribs were both great choices. The restaurant is very narrow and seating is awkward, not particularly comfortable. Nevertheless, we give it very high marks."

  • "I took my girlfriend there for her birthday on a Monday night and the food was wonderful. The greeter and the bartenders were both friendly and the drinks were fantastic. On the negative side I thought ( as did my girlfriend) that our waiter was less than friendly and actually somewhat pretentious. I gave the overall service 3 stars because outside of our waiter everyone else was great. I would recommend the restaurant based on the food but I would mention the waiter as a potential red flag."

The waitstaff was just the right amount of friendly, and the food was delicious! Desserts are usually a let down, but the chocolate-banana-peanut butter dessert was perfection.   • "After hearing about it on Check Please, was excited to check it out. While the food was interesting, our server Kevin was so cold and unhelpful that it cast a pall over our entire experience. When asking for recommendations, he offered terse one word answers, and he never returned to see if we enjoyed our choices. We were also seated on a bench with shards of glass from an interior mirror that had broken, without any apologies. It was unfortunate to have such poor service ruin a potentially wonderful meal."

  • "We really liked the food there, I went for the braised beef and my partner went for the pate platter. The beef were really tender and come with a delicious sauce. I opted for switching the potatoes to a green options. The Pate platter was big enough for a main we found, and was really tasty. The service was good at the exception of our main waiter who had a bit of an attitude and wasn't that friendly (seams to be in a rush when it wasn't that busy that night). It was fine, but it could have been better. Would we go back? Yes :-)"

  • "Hi, My boyfriend and I enjoyed the food. I was disappointed with my Halibut. It was quite over seasoned but I didn't send it back. The two small plates we had were great and the short ribs were outstanding. The service could have been a bit better. The waiter didn't bring out the entrees at the same time and there was a bit of confusion in some of the other service. He did make it up to us by bringing us each a taste of a sauterne with our dessert. Also, there was no hot tea available which disappointed my boyfriend because he is a big tea drinker. All in all, we had a great time and would come back. "

  • "Wood is the best restaurant in Lakeview. From the beer, wine, and cocktails list, through the small plates, entree, and dessert, everything was impeccably thought out and presented. The ambience is subdued, yet tasteful and though I was a bit underdressed, I never felt like I was being looked down upon. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone who has a little extra money in their pocket and wants to enjoy an entertaining and great tasting meal."
