  • "After hearing wonderful things about Wood Tavern for years a group of friends and I finally made it for lunch on Saturday. Wonderful! The food was all really really good - the Butcher Board with pates was amazing. We loved everything we had. Service was terrific, friendly but really professional. Attractive atmosphere, noisy but not too overwhelming. loved everything about it. My friends from SF agreed it was definitely worth the trip over."

  • "This WAS my favorite place to eat in Oakland. Our dinner this week put Wood Tavern way down on our list. There was a large group w/ children there during our dinner. The kids were loud and climbing all over the place. I know they cant turn away a family but this was out of control. Another couple having dinner actually confronted the group and asked the to be quiet. The staff should have stepped in well before the patrons. The food was the worst part of the night. I had an octopus & bean salad that tased like it was incased in salt. Only had two bites of the dish befoe putting my fork dow. Waitress didnt even ask why i didnt eat the dish. Ill be heading back into the city next time we want a meal over $100 on a week night."

  • "WT never disappoints. It is my fave restaurant in the bay by far. I had the burger, my BF had the chicken. Simple, fresh, well-executed food that is consistent. Servers are all so calm even though it is a madhouse. Such generous cocktails, too. Love, love, love this place. Only thing this time is, we had a 1:30pm lunch res and weren't seated till after 2pm. I understand it's hard to predict table turnover but feel they might have comped us a round of drinks."

  • "Had a great lunch at Wood Tavern with my sister. Food was creative and delicious. Even though we took most of our entrees to go, the desserts looked so good we had to order one. Highlights: meat and cheese platter, chocolate bread pudding. Only issue I had was that it was a rainy day and with the front door open I was very cold (I guess living on Maui has thinned my blood). Will definitely return next time I am in California. Great place!"

  • "I have eaten in countless restaurants in which I've enjoyed my first meal, but have been disappointed on returning a second or third time. Wood Tavern, however, is consistently excellent, and I have eaten there probably more than any other Bay Area restaurant. They continue to offer a core of staples, while gradually transforming the menu to offer new dishes. Wines are carefully selected and are offered at fair prices. I have introduced many guests to Wood, and they are always impressed. Not to mention the service is personable and professional. To maintain such all around excellence over an extended period of time is virtually unique in my experience."

  • "Wood Tavern was a start to finish winner. The chopped romaine salad was so scrumptious, I can't wait to return for more. Hamburger was perfectly cooked and served with a mountain of french fries. The service was friendly and attentive, even though the restaurant was full. I never had to ask for more water. The only negative was the noise level. It was very difficult to hear, even across a small table. I will definitely return because I still have to try dessert!"

  • "Excellent bar. I had the Sundowner, first on the rocks, but was too watery. The second I had "up" and it was perfect! Everyone in our party really liked what they ordered: The rigatoni with lamb sumo; the breast of lamb; the agnolotti (had a a main with two other starters); and the seafood stew. All excellent!!"

  • "Had not been to this wonderful restaurant for awhile (only because it's a tough reservation to come by) and though my experiences have always been positive,...we had forgotten how wonderful this gem can be; the bartender gets an extra star for creations which are not only taste treats...but are powerful and came with a small glass filled as nearly an additional "third" of a drink; flavors of all of our chosen treats ( octopus "stew", duck breast, chicory salad, pork chop & more) were complex and seemed to literally explode with layers of flavors..we left with a smile...and fully intend to make reservations in advance for the continuing gustatory brilliance which may well be the shining star of the growing College Ave restaurant "row""

  • "Upon entering the wood tavern, I let the hostess know that we would be there for about 3 hours. She was very gracious and thanked me for telling her. My two friends and I were able to have an unhurried lunch and enjoy the rainy afternoon with a wonderful cheese board, glass of wine, and entree. The server was polite, attentive, and efficient. We'll be back!"

  • "Wood Tavern is popular so getting a reservation can take some patience but it is well worth it! We went on a Monday night and it was very busy. The wine list is comprehensive. My wife had the Duck Breast and I had the Lamb Rigatoni and we were both pleased. As an appetizer we had a salad and the green beans with a tasty dipping sauce. The chocolate bread pudding desert was incredibly rich and delicious! Yang Peng, the chef is a genius and our waitress was thorough and attentive without being intrusive. A great experience all together and I can't wait to go back!"

  • "Made a reservation to celebrate our anniversary. Showed up right on time and the hostess said if we wouldn't mind waiting just a few more minutes she'd like to give us a window seat. Score! We waited not more than 5 min. before we were seated. The food was amazing, though we ended up taking half our burgers and fries home because we were so stuffed (we each had salads before our burgers). My only complaints are 1. I ordered salad dressing on the side and there were a few old slimy pieces of lettuce. It wasn't a dressed salad and the pieces were clearly visible (our lunch was late enough we missed the rush--there is no reason to send out salad like that). 2. Be warned: none of their desserts are dairy free which meant we couldn't have any."

  • "At the north end of Oakland's booming College Avenue "restaurant row," Wood Tavern is the almost perfect neighborhood joint - except that you need reservations to get in. Whether it's lunch or dinner, it's a short menu, but everything on it is well prepared and, for the quality, reasonably priced. If you're a meat eater, try the double pork chop. The wine list is nothing special, but it's fairly priced. There's not a whole lot of ambience and the room can get VERY loud. The service is friendly and efficient. You can spend a lot more on College and get a lot less."

  • "Don't get me wrong, the meal was very good. As someone who only eats fish though, I felt my meal left something to be desired. I ordered the only fish option on the menu (I can't actually remember what type of fish it was) and truthfully, I have had much better dishes for a far more reasonable price. However, I loved the cheese plate and our wine was superb. The other people in my party loved their steak and pork chop, and no one left disappointed."

  • "Dining at the Wood Tavern is always a pleasure. From their homemade charcuterie plates to the apple fennel crab salad the first course was amazing. The duck breast served with polenta was perfectly roasted and the grilled Rib Eye Steak with whipped bone marrow was amazing. The staff is so sweet that they sent over a bourbon panna cotta with a candle on it for my birthday. We love the staff they are always so professional and friendly."

  • "I would highly recommend Wood Tavern to anyone. My husband and I went for our wedding anniversary and we had a gift certificate to spend, so we ordered whatever we wanted without worrying about cost. We had three appetizers, the pate, the bone marrow and the gnocchi, all were incredible. I had the steak and he had the fish stew. We drank half a bottle of pinot from Navarro Vineyard in Anderson Valley and it paired perfectly with our meal. In total our bill came out to $120, which I felt was really reasonable. Super friendly staff, good atmosphere, it was overall a great dining experience. We will definitely return."

  • "I was not happy with my burger and fries. Very overcooked and dry and bland fries. My drink was good and martinis here are great. Usually i get the side plates which are very good. The folks I dined with ordered the pork chops and they loved it, so my less than excellent review is based on my experience with the burger. Service was excellent. I cant believe that they are serving these very unremarkable burgers there. I expect better."

  • "everything was great. very tasty. mushroom soup was awesome. creamy and nice bits of mushroom throughout. the mushroom sandwich was also very nice. great goat cheese, caramelized onions and the bread was amazing. crispy and sea salt on top. very tasty. took a while to get our sandwich after the soup. and sadly no chocolate on the dessert menu. but what we did have we loved."

  • "Dinner at Wood Tavern is always a treat, and great value for the money. The food is well prepared and portions are generous. The double pork chop is truly an undertaking. Lamb with huckleberry sauce was delightful and cooked just right, a beautiful medium rare. There are also plenty of delicious choices for the non-red meat eater on the menu. Roasted Brussels sprouts and the arugula salad were two stand outs. Some new wait staff need to take more lessons from the veterans, though. Only regret was we wished we had room for dessert!"
