Diner Reviews
  • "We have eaten at this restaurant in the past and have had great meals. We were back east for my husband's birthday and thought it would be a sure thing. I mentioned that we were celebrating a birthday when I booked the reservation, not so much as a happy Birthday from anyone let alone a gratuitous dessert with a candle! The manager admitted they let us down when I mentioned my disappointment as we left. Salad and scallops were great, first Mac and cheese was burnt so the waitress offered to replace it - second dish was undercooked and cool. My husbands steak was okay, not cooked as ordered but edible. This place can do way better- unfortunately birthdays only come once a year."

  • "Had the 8oz filet. The medium-rare was what I would normally call rare, but it was VERY good."

  • "While I had reasonable good experiences before, this time I was quite disappointed. The "special" grouper was very dry and "fishy". The service was poor but they had the audacity to add a 20% tip on their own! One of the few good places in Princeton has deteriorated!"

  • "Service very good despite crowds. Minimum wait for table. Food exceeds typical pub food, Seafood and raw bar fresh and safe. Several extrees excellent."

  • "We meet friends in Princeton at least twice a year. We have tried most of the area restaurants. This is the one we keep coming back to. The food and service are constantly good. We had a filet mignon special with crab meet and asparagus, outstanding. We will be back."

  • "This was one of my best meals yet at Witherspoon Grill. The oyesters rock are aleays delicious and the trio filet special was wonderful. The bananas foster was good, but better in the old taller parfet glass. The ice cream did not melt so fast then."

  • "I have been traveling to the Princeton area for work for the last year. On occassions I am able to bring the team out for dinner, I have visited Witherspoon a couple of times now and each time the food was excellant! The wait staff is always attentinve! They do have outdoor seating (when the weather is warm) which provides a pleasant setting for dinner. I would definitely recommend the Witherspoon to others!"

  • "No wait for our reservation. Service was friendly and attentive. Had one of the specials--meat was tender and cooked to perfection."

  • "We come to Princeton often and always try to lunch or dine here. We like the atmosphere as well as the food. On a rainy Saturday, we brought some friends from New York who'd never been, and they loved the asparagus gnocchi and key lime pie. My husband loved the tomato-kale soup, and we both enjoyed the Brick Griggstown Chicken. We shared a creme brulee; it was delicious. The wine list is varied and reasonably priced. We look forward to our next meal at the Grill."

  • "Food was delicious: scallops, steak salad, and prime rib. Strip steak was fatty, though. Brussel sprouts were delicious. Desserts adequate. Service not at all on par with quality of food. Waitress had timing of the meal and drinks wrong entire evening. Not attentive, got drink orders wrong all night. Bartender unskilled, really unacceptable at the prices of this establishment. Staff did not control the flow of people in and out, taking away from the atmosphere. Bartender quite loud and lacking in the graces expected in this type of restaurant. Unfortunately made the overall experience drop from a feeling of high end...to well, we just overpaid for our drinks! This place could be stellar with a let's say "more refined" staff."

  • "I was expecting better. The shrimp in the cocktail appetizer was dried out. My meal was not cooked as well as it should have been. I ordered medium and it came very rare. The creme brule was ok but not great. To be fair though, my wife said her fish was very good and she liked the chocolate tart dessert. The service was good but the place was loud."

  • "As far as I'm concerned, The Witherspoon Grill is perhaps the best place in downtown Princeton for an informal business lunch - and since I've lived and worked in Princeton for 30 years, I have some experience in the matter. The ambiance is pleasant, the noise level just about right even for female voices; the menu has a good selection for both light and heavy feeders; the service is professional and cheerful; the tables and booths are far enough apart for privacy; the location perfect; and the prices reasonable. Furthermore, although we occupied our booth long after we'd finished lunch in order to finish our business, there was no sense of pressure to move on and out."

  • "I HAD A 7PM RESERVATION, WE WERE SEATED AT 7:25. IT WAS ANOTHER 20 MINUTES BEFORE WAITRESS CAME TO THE TABLE"

  • "We had a great lunch at Witherspoon Grill ast Saturday. I had the Checken Ciabata sandwich which was excellent as usual. My husband devoured the mussels and the Cabo salad. The service provided by Ally was superb. She is definitely one of the best at the Grill although all the servers are great. We did have one small issue with the bartender. My husband went up to the bar to get change for the parking meter and outside of one, "I'll be right with you", was totally ignored which is tough to do since he's 6'6" and well over 250 lbs. After getting in the way of all the servers, he went back to our table. Yes, it was busy but he did have time to chit-chat with a couple at the end of the bar!"

  • "Always great food and happening atmosphere. Energetic and fun."

  • "We had the bread pudding French toast for brunch. It was fantastic. The Bloody Mary was too peppery for our taste. We where there around noon and it was very noisy. By the time we left it was less so."

  • "Good food, exceptionally attentive, but not invasive service. Delicious meal, well presented. View of street-side courtyard from inside. In warmer weather, lots of promising outdoor dining which is well away from street fumes. Right next to the excellent Princeton Public Library. Parking in various nearby garages. Go, you will enjoy yourselves."

  • "Friendly, popular, delicious tasting food.Fun to be there! Imagine my disappointment to find almost no lobster in the delicious lobster mac and cheese. The waitress reported that there should have been four ounces. There was a similar situation with the old lobster pot pie. My dinner buddy reports that the crab cake appetizer was delicious and the steak and mashed potatoes and my iceberg wedge were all fine. Apologies were offered by the kitchen."

  • "Great meal, great service. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars for overall is that I would recommend they give wet towels or wet wipes for clean up after the seafood tower, if ordered. It's delicious but messy with all the shell cracking, etc! Otherwise the service was great and timely, and the food was delicious! We had a really nice time."

  • "Our food took a little longer to prepare and after we dined, our server went ahead and treated us to dessert. It was unexpected and totally appreciated."

  • "My wife and I have been to the restaurant several times. WP has never ceased to amaze me. We try something new every time and every time its gets better and better. If I had one complaint (and this is very minor) it would be the total time of the meal. It seemed slow, but then again, you can not rush perfection."

  • "Lovely restaurant with a fantastic menu and exceptional food. A Saturday night and no one rushed us! Indeed, unusual!"

  • "A great place for a romantic dinner. Food is always good, the veal chop being one of our favorites. Very accommodating and pleasant staff. We love it here!"

  • "2 in the party ordered the 18 oz long-bone ribeye steak expecting it to be large and requiring a doggy bag. However it was a standard size therefore expect the weight included the inedible bone! Did not feel we got value for money."
    Dined on 3/6/2014
  • "Unfortunately, the food I ordered wasn't very good. I don't mind paying a little more but I want the food to be perfect at these prices. The beef tips were not cooked as ordered and I couldn't eat all the pieces as some were very chewy. I'm not too fussy about food but was disappointed as this was a birthday dinner and I expected better."

  • "BUT A LITTLE BIT NOISY (a lot of people on Saturday)"

  • "Overall the meal was good. They didn't bring out what I ordered and we sat next to pillar, which I didn't really like."

  • "Overall we enjoyed the dining experience but it certainly was hurried. We were seated on time for our 7 pm reservation and the waitress came very quickly and asked for our drink orders three times in the first 5 minutes. A shared appetizer arrived at the same time as a soup course. The main course arrived shortly thereafter. Appetizers, main course and coffee and dessert in 90 minutes flat. Pretty sure they needed the table for an 8:30 reservation. We will go back but maybe on a weeknight so that we aren't rushed through so quickly."

  • "Akways find the food very good and the service excellent even when it is very crowded and busy like it was Saturday evening"
    Dined on 2/22/2014
  • "Special night out with the wife. Early reservation meant no wait times and we were seated promptly. Waiter was extremely quiet, did not ask questions nor offer any suggestions. Only wrote down what we ordered and probably spoke less than 15 words all night. Glass wear on table had dishwasher residue all over it. Meals were nice (prime rib and salmon) and well prepared. The entire experience felt like the restaurant was trying to get to that top tier level but was just missing the mark on everything except the price, which we felt to be slightly on the high side given the overall dining experience."
    Dined on 2/22/2014
  • "You would think they are doing you a favor from the way you get treated there sometimes, especially the front desk. We had a reservation and they were running very late and they had attitude. Food was okay and service was nice, but mostly non-existent. We go there because of the lack of options, but we always leave wishing it were better."
    Dined on 2/21/2014
  • "Have gone here a couple times now and had a great experience both times. Last time was on Valentine's Day which had a fixed menu. We both had the Lamb which was cooked perfectly with an amazing sauce. They have great specialty drinks that always seem to be made with care. Our waitress Amanda was helpful and honest. She was attentive but not overbearing. I can't wait to go back."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "We have been here on a few occasions and each time our experience has been just a bit off. Whether service was slow or our meals haven't been to the standard you would expect from a higher end grill. The atmosphere of the restaurant almost gives off a quality of receiving a better level of service if you know "someone" that works there. After several tries, I don't think we will be eating there again. Way too many other wonderful restaurants in Princeton to enjoy."

  • "Never had a bad meal, here. It's always 4 stars or better for the food. This time was no exception."

  • "We had a client lunch there and had a great experience. The wait staff was knowledgeable and friendly, the food was fabulous, and the atmosphere lively and bright. It helped that the sun was shining, providing bright and open space and a nice outside view."

  • "Excellent food, but much too noisy due to the live music."
    Dined on 2/4/2014
  • "The food was good, I had the lobster risotto, but not what I hoped it would be. I would recommend the place but don't expect a gourmet dinner"
