Diner Reviews
  • "We enjoyed meeting life long friends for a day of dining, touring the museum and taking in the Downton Abby exhibit. A delightful day in all."

  • "This over-priced English brunch was a tie in to Winterthur's "Downton Abbey" exhibit. The food was cold and tasteless. The room was understaffed. However, this was a "one time" event. The Winterthur Cafe, open daily, is a very nice cafeteria style eatery with very acceptable food and ambience. I noted that I would recomment the restaurant to a friend based on it's routine fare, not this dismal "special" event."

  • "The food was slightly upscale buffet food and we all found something to enjoy. For the amount of people they know are coming, they should have many more servers on the floor."

  • "I took a friend for her birthday on Sunday for their Brunch that was to be an English Brunch for Downton Abbey. I was very disappointed. The food was good but not very much of a selection. The only thing that look Downton Abbey were the servers. The room was half of a cafeteria, with no flow to the food. I thought it would be much more posh and sophisticated especially for the price and where it was held. The service was poor and not enough staff. I would not recommend it to a friend. Jill Reich"

  • "The room was beautifully set with a lovely view. However, the room was understaffed and frenetic. There were very long waits for hot water, milk, decaffinated tea, etc. The staff was very polite and attentive if you could get their attention but management needs to provide more staff for peak times such as following a popular weekend tour. At the end of the day, it is Winterthur and the setting always feels elegant. Oh my! Complaining about service feels VERY Downton Abby! I must be channeling the Dowager!"

  • "The "Downton Abbey" tea was unique and delicious. The attentive servers in period costumes added to the experience."

  • "A fabulous way to end the day tour at Winterthur's "Costumes of Downton Abbey". A special surprise was the "soup shot" of Cream of Cauliflower & Stilton Soup."
    Dined on 3/30/2014
  • "Winterthur is a world class institution. Tea (Downton Abby Style) at Winterthur was not. Reservations are required in advance so the restaurant knew how many guests to plan for. The tea was buffet style and the tea sandwiches were immediately depleted and were slow to be replenished. The quality of the tea sandwiches was also very disappointing. The soup "shooter" dispenser was clogged. The deserts were outstanding - a wide selection and all were excellent. We never got a water refill. We had to ask for a tea refill. Then, during tea, the staff was filling buckets with ice - very, very noisy! One server was dedicated and determined, the others were less enthusiastic. All this for $30/person. Very disappointed."

  • "Billed as the Downton Abbey Tea, the ambience of the experience fell short. Savory treats that should have been served hot or at least warm were right out of the refridge. Soup shots were the best but quickly ran out and were not replaced. Sweet treats were well done. Hot water was table served by overworked and overwhelmed wait staff to be pours over tea bags. Lame attempts at period costume just showed the possibilities had the management committed themselves to the concept and created some sense of theatricality among wait staff."

  • "The ambiance left a little to the imagination. Not exactly what I expected. the food was very good. I enjoyed the fun themed names given to the dishes. the desserts were superb. the service was very slow. this might have been due to the fact the the wait staff was incredibly understaffed! i believe there were three servers working the floor. overall it was nice."

  • "We came for brunch of a Sunday. Seating was prompt to the reservation; staff were attentive and service, while limited by the fact that brunch was a buffet, was very good. Food was generally excellent, although desserts seemed much less interesting than the other dishes. Ambience was pleasant; seating was comfortable. We would return (although we live 500 miles away, so opportunity will be limited)."

  • "The Downton English Brunch at Winterthur was perfectly splendid, from the first bite of savory casserole to the last bite of delectable tart. I cannot recommend the Brunch highly enough."

  • "Enjoy an elegant English brunch with a scenic view! Sart off with a delicious mimosa, We ordered custom omelets and helped ourselves to assorted fresh fruits and baked goods. Then on to roast leg of lamb and salmon accompanied by crisp salads. Top it all off with decadent desserts. The service is prompt and polite. A must do!"

  • "This was an outstanding buffet. Many new dishes and good combinations of tastes. Well presented."

  • "Don't expect a true English cream tea here or you'll be disappointed. This one is a buffet with a good variety of sandwiches and sweets, all quite tasty. Several choices of tea bags are available. The area of the dining room set aside for tea was framed by large planters of poinsettias and a window wall with a view of the snowy landscape. The tables, attractively set with linens, are spaced not too close together. Winterthur is the only US site for the exhibition "Costumes of Downton Abbey," which begins March 1, when the museum and restaurant reopen."

  • "Knowing how wonderful the Winterthur grounds are and the care they take to maintain the property, you would expect a higher level of food for a sit down tea service. It was overpriced and the food was nothing to rave about."

  • "Would recommend. Staff was helpful, friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was relaxing but sophisticated. Brunch had diverse dishes that were tasty and creative. The only concern was that this was a Brunch with Santa, who left shortly after we arrived @ 11:00am. Luckily we did not have children with us."

  • "My sister and I toured the estate and we tired of walking afterwards. The high tea was a perfect ending to a lovely visit. Our server was delightful and attentive. And kept the teapot and our plates full. Sandwiches were fresh and lovely to look at and the desserts were varied and delicious. We sat by the window and had a great view of the garden. I would say it was a perfect ending to a girlfriend trip."

  • "Nestled within the bucolic Winterthur Estate, it is a beautiful location for a Sunday brunch and later for touring the estate and grounds. Imaginitive menu and attentive service. Disappointed that they only serve brunch once a month. Menu usually reflects the season and local produce. Each month it is a surprise. We dine there several times a year. Most enjoyable, even for the vegetarians in your family."

  • "Wonderful brunch. I would suggest adding more tables and not seating anyone across from the music - which was a very nice touch to the occassion. Just a little too loud that close."
