Went to Wimauma's on the tip of a friend. It is located in a nondescript strip plaza in South Tampa. The interior is lively and fun. At least in the main dining area. Unfortunately, we were shuttled into a back dining area which was almost unbearably cold (and I like it cold... Really cold). It's difficult to enjoy your meal when your wife's lips are blue. The back room is noisy, the music is maddeningly loud, and it almost looks like it was an afterthought ("Hey, we're pretty crowded all the time. Let's turn the storage area into a Plan B dining area). The service took forever, although the server was very friendly. All these negatives could be simply because we were there on a Friday night. The food, however, is spectacular!

We were really looking forward to our first visit here on Sunday 1-20-13 after seeing the recent news coverage of this restaurant and reading many yelp reviews. The visit started out very nice as we were greeted promptly by a pleasent waitress and received our iced teas and appetizer promptly. The appetizer of beef & cheese mini egg rolls was very delicious. Things went down hill from there.....we waited 1 hr and 10 minutes for our food and were getting quite bored. Our food finally came but my boyfriends plate did not contain the honey mustard dip as indicated on the menu and it took us about 15 minutes to ever see our waitress to ask for it and she still never brought it so about 10 minutes later we finally saw her again and were able to

I've been to Wimauma several times, and everytime the food is amazing, and, being raised around chefs, I'm rarely impressed with restaurant food. Amy, the chef's wife, is always so friendly and nice to talk to. Never a dull moment at Wimauma - the chef is incredibly creative with his food, some things sound so bizarre, but turn out to be amazing.

We're always surprised to find such quality food in a small restaurant in a strip mall. Wimauma was no exception. We were a party of 4 and split a "small" plate of the fried okra; it was fabulous, but we never expected so much food...it was a meal in itself. The fried chicken was a big hit, served in a small bucket, too. The salmon was very good, but the risotto with pesto did not match the flavorful salmon. I might pass on the shrimp and grits and try the fried chicken or delicious sounding pork instead. Overall, this restaurant is great find. We were there on a Thursday night at 7 PM and they had run out of one dessert and one kind of wine. It's new and I believe this will be rectified.

Motto written on wall and T-Shirts for Chef Gary & his eclectic menu of Southern style good eats from local purveyors in S Tampa. We didn't go wrong with our party's choices: A starter of Seafood on a Shingle-crab, mussel & clams in a lobster bisque on garlic toast & as the fried oysters-ran out-they were replaced by perfectly fried shrimp on guacamole w pepper jam; Mains:Hangar steak marinated in espresso; 2#s Bay Seasoning snow crabs & u-peel'em shrimp; a deep bucket of light skinned, flavorful southern fried chicken + the salt and garlic fried okra present from the chef. Desserts: uniquely crusted marvelous Key Lime pie and a tangy & sweet Salted Caramel Pie w Pretzel Crust. Small but useful wine list & craft beer choices!

The restuarant was packed with only two servers. The managers explain that the restuarant had an event earlier, which took away from the normal staffing level. The amount of food for the price is insane. The menu is different, my son enjoy the rabit enchiladas, but the pork loin was nothing to bragg about at all. My wife enjoyed the lamb chops, but had to heat up left over spagetti because the portion size was unacceptable.

This was our 4th trip to Wimauma. The food is still fantastic, in fact it continues to get better over time. The remodeling and enlargement of the restaurant is perfect. However, the service continues to be spotty and very poor on this recent visit. The waiter, I think his name was Holland, was very inattentive throughout the meal and it took 20 minutes to get the check after we asked for it. He seemed to only be able to wait on one table at a time. Very poor ambassador.

We had heard very good reviews for this restaurant and unfortunately was extremely disappointed. My husband and I went for New Years Eve for a fixed price menu that was 5 courses w/ wine paring. We could not eat the 2nd course (none of the tables around us did either) and the dessert was confusing. The flavors did not flow through the 5 courses and everything was really rich. Normally we eat everything and consider ourselves to have refined but experimental palates. The service was very bad. The server brought the wine out either way before/way after each course. The server also knew the food was bad and would promise the next course was better. Overall it was a poor experience.

The only salvation this place has is the food. A great chef that knows how to blend the world onto a plate and match wines to boot. However; and its a BIG "however"...the service is terrible, the staff dresses poorly. Three things we wanted on the menu were not available and then a fourth even after we ordered. The parking is great for south Tampa and the space itself is cozy and local art on walls is nice. Its cool to be able to see a kitchen...when the kitchen is impressive to look at --- not the case here. We won't return or refer until these survival-based problems are fixed.

We started out with two appetizers--the Salt & Pepper Fried Okra, which is completely different from what you typically get and absolutely delicious. The Coquette on the other hand (rabbit, oysters, poached egg) just wasn't for either of us. For dinner we both chose off of the speacials menu. I had the Rabbit Enchiladas which were fantastic and my wife had the Mahi-Mahi. The fish itself was a bit on the strong-side flavorwise; however, the sauce and other elements of the dish more than made up for it. Our server was top-notch--the kind you expect at a 5-star restuarant but almost never actually get. Cheap wine & the ability to bring your own ($10 corkage) sealed the deal that we'll be returning again.

Wimauma was a delight. Showcasing locally-sourced ingredients with a playful twist, the restaurant provided a really tempting and pleasing experience. The pairing of flavors shows a fine hand in the kitchen who really understands the meaning of balance. Clearly a lot of thought goes into every menu selection, Highly recommend teh fried oysters with guacamole and sundried tomato relish ( yummy!) , do not mis steh Plant City-sourced pork tenderloin brined in sweet tea (out of this world) and teh shrimp and grits. Their take on a mimosa is also refreshing ( blood orange sorbet and grapefruit juice balance the flavors nicely) and their craft beer offerings notable.Local art and ingredients make for a memorable dining experience.

We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Wimauma, it is apparent that there is a well skilled, creative chef in the kitchen. The pork was cooked just right, juicy and flavorful. Thanksgiving at Wimauma was very, very good. Apps were fried green tomatoes on watercress w/ham (delicious) and beet salad with homemade cottage cheese on argula(same). Entrees: ham wrapped mahi mahi on risotto; both excellently cooked. Turkey (would have preferred roast rather than smoked, but good) with wonderful oyster/sausage stuffing, and greens. Dessert: salt caramel pie w/pretzel crust - melt in your mouth good (and I generally don't like dessert). Wine was paired with all courses, and the wines were unexpectedly good. Wait service (Stephanie) was excellent and entertaining. And the price was incredibly reasonable for such a great meal. A very warm and homey place. Good job, Wimauma!

Thksgiving menu: sampling oysters, beet salad, turkey, duck, mahi mahi, 5 spice pumpkin pie, a "brownie" (big dense fudge cake), and caramel pie with basil chantilly (mm. All, except duck, were very good. The chef obviously takes pride and is adept. The crispy brussel sprout leaves were excellent, wine pairing excellent, the salad was superb, and the oysters were perfectly cooked. The downside: the duck was chewy and flavorless. And, a minor question was about pairing quacamole with the fried oysters. Individually, they tasted good (the oysters were very good), but together may not have been the best combo. All in all, recommended. We'll be back.

In an uncharacteristicly out-of-my-way kind of way, we chose to celebrate my birthday at Wimauma this year, and the choice turned out to be, well, choice! As a local supporter of the Slow Food, Food-not-lawns, and local permaculture foodavore in general, I normally choose restaurants within a 5-10 mile radius, however I felt Wimauma deserved a try due to its local focus. I think the experience was well worth the 60 mile round-trip, although I would really prefer that another one open closer to Palm Harbor! My single recommendation regarding the food was that crab cakes and fried okra were probably a little much--not greasy at all, just more than I am accustomed to--my own fault, I could have had a salad.
