Diner Reviews
  • "Enjoyed my first experience here very much. Of course, its expensive, so I don't think we'll come frequently, but you don't have to go to DC to get really high quality food! We tried the tuna and the swordfish, and both were really tasty, including the vegetables that were served with it. Each part of the dish had unique flavors and textures. Definitely a high quality place. Service was friendly and attentive. Dessert and drinks were delicious as well!"

  • "Food is consistently excellent, using fresh and local ingredients. I prefer to eat on the patio if it is cool enough because the nosh menu is exceptional. One thing I'm not crazy about is that you can't get the nosh menu inside, but you can get nosh and the interior menu outside. Should be able to order off either menu in my opinion. The gougeres (gouda-filled popovers) are unbelievable."

  • "Loved the food, service and location. Sat outside and it was perfect. Had lunch and dinner. The waiter was very helpful and friendly. The vegetarian fare for me was excellent!"

  • "With all the places that come and go along the Orange Line, it's easoy to forget that Willow remains an outstanding choice for almost any dining option."

  • "We so do enjoy eating at Willow, we really must go there more often. Our server was professional and attentive and helped us make some good choices. The Scallop appetizer was wonderful-the scallops were so sweet and tender-we even asked for a spoon to get the rest of the sauce! Our Salmon entree was cooked just right-and so tender. We ate on the patio as it was a lovely evening and just had a delightful evening."

  • "I brought a friend to lunch here. It was her first time and her meal was great. I ordered the half turkey club and cup of soup. The soup was excellent, but the bread on my sandwich was dry and stale. I usually have a fantastic meal when I eat here, so maybe they had a bad day when they didn't get their bread delivery. They were very busy and I had OK service."

  • "The Willow provides a consistently excellent setting, delicious food, and professional service for business lunches."

  • "Linen table cloths, very professional and service oriented wait staff who let the food "speak for itself". Not the typical check-in with "how's your meal?" before you've had a second bite to even know. I would rate my specific meal "5" but I can't honestly do that for the entire menu as this was only my second visit and I had not been there 5+ years."

  • "We had a great dinner with a nice Gruner Veltliner. The scallop appetizer was among the best thing I ever ate! Our waiter Tim was charming."

  • "Willow never disappoints! Great food, great service, great location, great atmosphere. It's always consistent and always a dining pleasure."

  • "I reserved a table at Willow for my husband's birthday. What a great surprise -- they made special menus just for the occasion, wishing my husband a happy 40th. He loved that! Our waiter was wonderful -- courteous and helpful without being too intrusive. I loved my entree of tuna, and my husband's duck was also wonderful, but my appetizer of "summer picnic salad" was the big hit. Fresh, juicy heirloom tomatoes, watermelon, feta, roasted corn, a bit of mint, a light dressing -- I actually saved some for dessert. But speaking of dessert, we ended with sticky toffee pudding, a treat I haven't had since visiting the Cayman Islands many years ago. It was worth having to loosen my belt a little."

  • "My first trip to Willow was quite a surprise in that the menu was full of tasty but not so trendy items that you couldn't figure out what you were eating like many restaurants today. They had a large enough luncheon appetizer menu that would be suitable for those who do not eat seafood which is also very unusual in todays restaurants. The service was friendly, aware of our needs and on time with courses. The outdoor section was fairly crowded but the indoor was quiet and pleasant. My companion, who has been there before was unhappy that the chef took their famous onion soup off the menu! Maybe they will consider serving it again! I will definitely return."

  • "A friend and I were celebrating her birthday and decided to go to Willow. The soups of the day that we tried ( pistou and gazpacho) were both prepared differently that expected, but they were interesting and delicious. The highlight of our meal was the "cake of the day," which we split for dessert. When our waiter learned that it was my friend's birthday, he gave her a small wine glass full of cookies to take home -- a very nice touch! As neither of us had been to Willow in a while, we noted that the decor needs a bit of updating. A restaurant that always offers fresh and creative choices on the menu might want to think about a "facelift" once in a while."

  • "Our food was not up to its usual high standard. I'm hoping this was an abberation and not an indication of a decline."

  • "The WIllow was outstanding. We had a delicious meal at a reasonable cost. We went to celebrate our daughter's birthday and they even printed a special menu that had her name and birthday greetings. They really paid attention to detail with many personalized touches. The waiter was very attentive. Overall our experience was excellent and we would highly recommend it."

  • "Excellent service and outstanding food well prepared. Best calamari appetizer I've ever had bar none. All entrees on the menu looked great. I guess I'll have to return several times to try all of them. The wine list is extensive and varied in terms of country of origin, varietals and terroir. Do give this restaurant a try if you are looking for an outstanding dining experience."

  • "My guests and I were treated to yea another fine meal at Willow. The service was fine (although he could have glanced at our table to see if the drinks needed to be refilled), the food delicious and presented beautifully. One guest did report that her mushroom flatbread was a bit salty. One regret: the portions are so substantial that there is no way any of us coudl have had a multi-course meal. In fact, even though I ordered only an entree and a dessert, I took half the entree home! Can't wait to return -- I wish they were in my neighborhood..."

  • "The June lunch daily specials are outstanding and super reasonable for both the quality and quantity of the foods. The hamburgers are flavorful and the best I've ever had! The home made deserts offered are varied and scrumptious! Service staff are exceptional! Definitely a neighborhood gem and a restaurant everyone should check it out!"

  • "The food we had for lunch was delicious (salmon kabobs and the tuna entrees, along with gazpacho and organic salad with hearts of palm appetizers). The menu selections were exciting and the presentation of the food is fantastic--everything looked like a work of art. The pineapple upside down cake for dessert was delicious too. On the negative side, the service was extremely slow (took nearly 2 1/2 hours just to eat lunch for two people--not acceptable during a business day whatsoever). I do not like to be rushed while eating but this was unbelievably slow. Also the restaurant started out quiet so it was easy to hear one another, but by noon it got so loud that I felt like we had to shout to hear one another."

  • "Most I the foo was very good, especially the cauliflower and goat cheese soup. However, plastic in the shrimp and an entree side that first materialized with our appetizers only to be sent back and reappear with dessert spoiled the experience. It was noticeable that nothing was said by staff about either issue."
    Dined on 6/18/2014
  • "We had an outside table on a perfect evening. The flatbread was an excellent mix of salty, zesty, and mellow. The appetizer was a fantastic medley of grilled shrimp, garbanzo beans, capers, greens, olives, fingerling potatoes that were cooked to perfection and covered the entire rainbow, and two sauces that were perfectly balanced, the soup was flavorful and succulent, the mushroom tart had a marvelous balance of mushroom, cheese, and flakey crust, and the hazelnut chocolate layer cake was rich and satisfying. The wait staff were well informed and attentive without hovering."

  • "Our previous experience at Willow was terrific and so I looked forward to this dinner; however it didn't live up to expectations. The food was only so-so, the service, while enthusiastic, was not as professional as I expected, and our "quiet" corner turned out to be a bit depressing as heels on the wooden floor clicked by en route to the toilets and noise from the hall was distracting."

  • "I'm a fan of this place, which has delicious, never boring food, but on this visit I probably didn't choose the best items for me. Still, the pasta/fava been combo under the lamb shank/sausage appetizer was, well, delicious. Flatbreads are always excellent, and portionwise just right. Dessert-- a mini bundt cake version of sticky toffee pudding-- was a perfect ending! I'm still thinking about it the day after, which doesn't often happen for me."

  • "This is one of our favorite spots for an excellent meal. We have never been disappointed. It seems on this occasion they were short staffed when we elected to sit on patio even though we specified that in the Open Table reservation. There was a large party going on in one of the private rooms. Our table wasn't ready, so we waited at the bar and met the vibrant bartender Boomer who took care of us. We enjoyed a great cheese plate without the nuts since one of us has a severe allergy to tree nuts. Boomer also saved us at the end when our food took forever to come out of the kitchen. "

  • "I had heard great things about the food at Willow but was disappointed. The salad was limp although the combination of ingredients (greens, oranges, hearts of palm and cheese) was great. The scallops were tasty and I found that that appetizer and the salad were plenty of food for dinner. Waiter was less than attentive although pleasant enough. It was quiet because we ate outside. Inside seemed very noisy. And the menu was not the same as what is on the website - let's get updated, Willow."

  • "No substitutions needed. The menu and food are perfect... every time!"

  • "We frequently go back to Willow as it is a reliable and tasty resource. The entrees may look like many other restaurants, but the chef always finds ways to pair flavors and textures to create a new experience. On this visit the cod was outstanding, delicately moist and tender paired with lentils and a beet reduction. Staple of the menu are the flatbreads which are meals unto themselves. "

  • "A different server, but still same great service. I had the salmon kebob, which was good but not outstanding. Dessert, the Key Lime tart, on the other hand was very good, with the right combination of sweet/tart."

  • "My wife and I have been to Willow before and enjoyed it thoroughly. We thought that it would be a good place for the kids to join us on Mothers' Day. We were wrong. In fairness to the restaurant, our girls were more restless than usual, but that wasn't the real problem. The service was not good -- for example, they served the first course while we were in the bathroom with the kids, so it sat there getting cold while we were away from the table. The other problem was with the kitchen: our main course came before we completed the first and they failed to put pepperoni on the kids' flatbread, prompting further delays (but no apologies). On top of that, the food was not remotely as good as previous visits. We're unlikely to go back."

  • "I took my mom to Willow to celebrate Mother's Day. As always, it was a wonderful experience. The menu was just wonderful--really loved the Kung Pao Style Calimari, an excellent new appetizer addition. Our server, Rebecca, was really helpful in helping us pick a wine to go with our meals. No rush to get us out the door. I hope everyone takes the opportunitiy to enjoy Willow Restaurant this spring!"

  • "Willow never disappoints...the food is spot on and the service is everything that you would expect. On the food side, the pork panini is one of the best sandwiches that I have ever had...please DO NOT take it off your menu! "

  • "Food was not bad but not great either. Solid "B-". For example, duck was underdone, orange sauce a bit cloying. Dessert was excellent tho. Service was pretty poor. No one came to the table for 15 min, drinks took forever, and then they served the appetizer simultaneously with the main course. When I mentioned this to the waiter, he apologized and said he would speak to the kitchen. Not a great response in my opinion. Restaurant was busy for a Tuesday, but wait staff didnt seem overburdened. This place gets great reviews from, e.g., Washingtonian Magazine, but I sure do not see it."

  • "Four of us had a nice wine lunch on a Monday...great way to start a week. Lots of perfectly cooked scallops added on my salad bacon/spinach salad. Others enjoyed the special cheese steak sandwich, french onion soup, flatbreads. Service was always available but non-intrusive and friendly. GREAT desserts. Pineapple bread pudding and some warm chocolate thing. Topped it off with some coffee and port. Perfect Monday! I highly recommend."

  • "We truly enjoy dining at Willos, although since it is not in our area, we save it for special occasions. The service is fine: attnetive and knowledgable staff. While Willow conisders their flatbreads to be a specialty area, I found mine to be a bit heavy, with too much cheese. The sea scallop appetizer was wonderful, as were the two beef main courses. those included mushroom fries (not to be missed!) and a spinach tart. the restaurant sent us home with a champagne glass filled with hous-made cookies and best wishes for a Happy anniversary! What a nice touch. We will return! "
