Diner Reviews
  • "Exceeded my expectations. I was expecting an overpriced "soul food" restaurant, however, it was everything but that. The food was excellent, well presented, very tasteful , perfectly seasoned and the accompanying sauces were right on. I had the cornmeal crusted trout and shared sides of cornmeal dumplings and a very different twist on Brussels sprout..........I would order all of these again. My only complaint would be having to pay two dollars for a "biscuit ""

  • "What a great surprise. We came here awhile back for brunch and it was really great then I simply forgot about it. We stumbled on it again the other night and I'm so happy we did. They have these odd crab cakes that are actually made from hearts of palm that are awesom. We had just a variety of apps to snack on and literally everything was great! I'm really looking forward to going back and trying more items."

  • "I was hoping everything would be fantastic. It was fantastic+. Hanger Streak was mind boggling! Mussles were perfect although one of them we could not eat because it was closed."

  • "A varied menu with southern accents. Best Fried chicken in town. The bar is a great place To sit and eat as you enjoy the personable bar Team and their crafty cocktails."

  • "but Willie Jane made it better than tolerable! I began with the only thing I didn't love. Collard greens - AMAZING. Biscuits - and that butter with honey and orange - out of this world. And. I'm from Alabama, so I started out worried that there wasn't plain butter. I ended up asking for more of their creation. And the cast iron chicken was crispy on the outside and moist and tender inside - so, so, so good. Also, our martinis were perfect. Can't wait to go back and try more."

  • "Love the fried chicken and the biscuits and the side dishes are authentically Southern but with an updated twist: shrimp and grits, greens, brussel sprouts, Hoppin John. Consistently delicious!"

  • "We had the vegan pre-fix on a Sunday night and the food was stunning. All three courses were great, the starter and the desert were so good I could not believe they were actually vegan."

  • "I came for the fried chicken but fell in love with the deviled eggs and biscuits. This is not fancy food; it's satisfying food. The Macaroni and Cheese has a great sauce but could be crispier around the edges. Good service too and did I say friendly. This is a great place to eat."

  • "We were a group of four. They let us pick our table and the chef immediately sent over some buttermilk biscuits (free) because he had found us waiting in the bar area (even though we hadn't been waiting more than a couple of minutes while our table was being prepared). As a group, we had Grouper (yummy), fried chicken (very yummy), hanger steak (outstanding) and trout (very yummy). The desert, chocolate chess pie, was fabulous. And, I highly recommend trying some of the signature cocktails and the dark lager. The service was great and the atmosphere fun. A very easy and comfortable place."

  • "unless you prefer not to hear anyone at your table, avoid going on Abbot Kinney First Fridays -- they have a DJ playing music so loud the table vibrates and all conversation has to stop."

  • "Willie Jane is much more than "cool" by serving up delicious food.. fish and Pork both amazing to Biscuits and honey butter that live on in your memory to ensure your return. Both warm & professional staff bring on the Southern Comfort- and the bar scene is neighborhood energy at it's best. Luv ya Willie Jane"

  • "While the food was great - the fried chicken was ordered by half the table and amazing - the standouts of the night really came from the bar with the craft cocktails."

  • "I live around the corner from WJ and would have been ecstatic to write a great review. I loved Lily's (not sure why it closed) and never tried WISC but WJ is the strangest menu ever. We came specifically for drinks and appetizers, believing all the reviews about how great the bar is, and found that the cocktails were small and overpriced. $15 for about four sips of manhattan. not worth it. The bisquits were delicious but sit at the bar if you want to be impressed by the bar. Otherwise, just overpriced."

  • "Went with my man and two young teens for a family dinner that would still feel fun. They loved the back yard feel with twinkle lights and mason jars. We loved the hipster vibe and cocktails. It was the prefect compromise for them to feel grown up and us to feel like we had date night. They even accommodated the youngsters with virgin drinks to match ours. Chose to share family style. The pimento cheeseboard and pork drumsticks were surprising highlights. All the Vegi sides were solid and the biscuits and Mac and cheese were big hits with the kidos. The best part was the communal atmosphere of the back room. All the tables around us were having a great time and no one was afraid to ask each other what they ordered and how it was."

  • "Terribly disappointing. Mediocre food at best. Te only thing that was good were the biscuits and yes, they were delicious. High noise level. Pass!"

  • "The food, service and wine/cocktails were very good. The portions were perfect. Not too big and not too small. The meals were appropriately priced. I say this because often restaurants give you way more food than you can eat and charge way more than is reasonable. I've felt often that restaurants should cut their portions and cut the price to match the portion size. This restaurant accomplished this. The staff was very attentive to our group of 8 that included two children."

  • "I finally tried this restaurant that replaced Lilly's, a French spot. On the recommendation of Jonathan Gold, a local food journalist, I tried the fried chicken. I usually eat very healthy but figured it's a soul food place, why not go nuts? Thus, I also had a very good biscuit and some sides that promised a smidgin of kale or cauliflower with a big dose of fatty meat to flavor them. The fried chicken was good, but the "snipped herbs" turned out to be just that, some garnishes tossed on a plate. Most people in Venice do yoga, eat healthy, and have enviable cholesterol levels. I would have been much happier with half as much fried chicken (2 pieces instead of 4) and a nice green salad, but there was no salad option on the menu."

  • "I made a reservation for two through Open Table and was told only a couple of times were available making the place seem busy and all booked up. We arrived and were sited by the bathroom with plenty of other tables available all over the restaurant. We ordered the burnt honey orange butter biscuit which was amazing. then we ordered the Fried Mary's Chicken with Snipped Garden Leaves and got three chicken pieces for $18.00 that had a salty crust and a dark meat piece that was not even cooked all the way. The simmered collard greens with pickled pepper made the meal one I rather forget. Kentucky Fried Chicken is way better in this case."

  • "The service was upbeat and timely. The ambiance was warm and friendly. Lots of mixed ages at this restaurant which is nice because most places in Venice these days are screaming with under-30s. My red tail with cauliflower was superb though with few veges, while my boyfriend thought his oxtail with plantains was just okay. We enjoyed a side of collard greens and the ice box cake was to die for. The alcoholic drinks looked fun and creative though we didn't partake of those. They have a happy hour even on Saturdays and a nice little bar and lounge area with a hip fake fire. There are some booths at the restaurant as well as a back enclosed patio dining area."

  • "The menu is not extensive but the choices are interesting and each dish generates interest. The kitchen is not afraid to spice an offering, and eating is fun. Service is attentive and there is a noticeable lack of attitude."

  • "1st, the food and atmosphere were great here! Unfortunately my food arrived approx. 15 minutes after everyone else at our table was served. So, my dining companions were on their last bites of food when my dinner arrived. The waiter didn't seem overly concerned when I asked him twice where the food was- he just said "it's on it's way". Not "I'm sorry for the delay" or "it will be here in 5 minutes". No explanation or apology. Most restaurants of this caliber make sure all plates go out at the same time-"

  • "I picked this place for it's ratings and the location. Honestly, I was so much more interested in catching up with my friend -- whom I hadn't seen since before Xmas -- that I didn't really have my mind on the food. That being said, everything we ordered -- including the cocktails -- tasted great. My only complaint was that their delicious flakey biscuits weren't served with any kind of jam or jelly, just with flavored butter. Here I am indulging in carbs and I can't have someone's delicious homemade fruity creation with it? HERESY!"

  • "We were very pleased with the restaurant. Food was yummy, the "bottomless mimosas" were in fact bottomless... The only negative note was the fact our waitress took a while to take our order. Yet, she was very accommodating. And for a group of 3 adults and 3 kids, that's very important."

  • "The food is excellent. Very delicious parings of flavors and textures and the ambience is great too you can't lose it in this restaurant. Biscuits are must and I recommend the fried chicken and waffles."

  • "I chose Willie Jane based on the fact that it was unique unto itself, offering food with a southern-style twist. I took my wife here for her 32nd b-day. The atmosphere was young and fun and the interior was inviting and cozy. While waiting for our reservation, we enjoyed a few daily special drinks along with a tasty pimento cheese and bread appetizer. For dinner we ordered the buttermilk biscuit, Brussels sprouts and shared the fried chicken. It's was plenty of food as they give you 1/2 a chicken. Even though we were full, we dove in to the oatmeal cookie/mascarpone dessert which I recommend. I'm definitely coming back here. There's several items on the menu I want to try and I know it's going to be good."

  • "Drinks: if you like bourbon, this is your place. Great craft cocktails, I recommend the Bramble. Starter: biscuits were amazing-- especially the spread that comes with them. Entree: highly recommend the pork chop and fried chicken. The pork chop was flavorful and fall off the bone; it was possibly the beat pork chop I've ever had. The fried chicken was great as well. Perfectly seasoned, perfectly crisp, but super moist meat inside. The sides of Mac and cheese and brussel sprouts were good too. Brussel sprouts were sweet, and the Mac and cheese had a little kick. Service: service was good. Our server seemed busy with a number of tables, but the supporting staff took great care of us--our water glasses were never empty!"

  • "Great food! Great service. Great neighborhood spot w garden next store to give it a cozy, peaceful, and romantic ambiance. I loved that there is vegan and vegetarian options..I'm really grateful for that!!! All and all a great dining experience."

  • "The biscuits are the best! And the best thing we ate, frankly. My husband and I each had two appetizers for dinner. He had the shrimp and grits which he said were good and the pork drumsticks which were dry (pork shanks). I had the pear salad which was a typical fruit, nut, blue chees salad, except the pears were not ripe or juicy and the spiky lettuce was hard to eat. The quail was alright, nothing special, but the accompanying turnips were horrid. Our daughter had the fried chicken, which came, as advertised, by itself, on a plate. It had almost no seasoning, and it was the type of fried chicken that had no coating. It was boring, frankly. We didn't have dessert, since nothing tickled our fancy. But those biscuits!"

  • "No southern hospitality here. They were out of menu items on an already selective choice. The waitstaff and host were arrogant and unauthentic. Food was mediocre. Not to be recommended."

  • "Had a good experience here. The fried chicken was great - moist on the inside and crispy on the outside. Would also recommend the deviled eggs (different, but delicious) and the brussel sprout side. the food was strong, but I wasn't completely wowed."

  • "I had been curious to see what Govind Armstrong had brought to Venice, and now that I had a perfect evening I know: southern cooking with a decidedly "clean" spin. There are certain things that one sees on a menu and has to try; here it was the biscuits and it such a pleasure to know what they serve at the heavenly table on high. As if the soft, buttery crunchy exterior was not sweet enough, the honey butter pushed the whole experience to levels of this-is-the-best-biscuit-I-have-ever-eaten status. Fried chicken but without a hint of grease? Check. The world's best oatmeal raisin cookie sandwich with a marscopone filing cannot be passed up. And the cocktails? Ever had smoke in a glass? You can here. Something new on the block."
